Karl Latham, Ryan Carniaux & Mark Egan Constellations Over the years, Björk’s music has been reworked by the likes of Jason Moran, Greg Osby, Dave Douglas, Gretchen Parlato, The Bad Plus, and many more. Karl Latham has been a Björk fan for many years, and when her album Volta was released it triggered in him an urgent desire not just to cover the songs, but to create new compositions as a kind of “commentary.” After much planning, Latham gathered his team and went into Barbershop Studios in Spring 2013 with sound engineer Jeremy Gillespie, where they created a truly fascinating portrait of a singer, and her music. Scott Fields String Feartet Mostly Stick One year after the release of Kintsugi and shortly after the double CD Haydn, Between the Lines is proud to offer a third CD by the Scott Fields String Feartet. Contrary to its predecessor, there is no explicit reference to classical composers. Fields’ guitar also takes up more space, even though it is a special feature of the “Feartet” that the ensemble playing is in the foreground. On this program, the “master juggler” of improvised jazz and new music presents six “comprovisations,” of which the majority easily surpass the 10-minute limit. Feather also sent his own mini-festival on tour: a trio with singing pianist Beryl Brooker, another trio led by Red Norvo, the quartet of Buddy DeFranco, and singer Billie Holiday. • Having had an encounter with her abusive husband the evening prior, Billie appeared onstage in Cologne wearing dark sunglasses, and the repertoire included a song written by her entitled “I Love My Man” (a.k.a. “Billie’s Blues”). The singer may have been battered by her disastrous life, but she was nevertheless able to move her audience. He coordinated his “Jazz at the Philharmonic” tours from there, which at that time were very successful in Europe. In the following year, he even sent off two all-star casts under the slogan “Norman Granz’s Jazz at the Philharmonic Presents Jazz Winners of 1960.” • The first cast was made up of Ella Fitzgerald, Roy Eldridge, the Jimmy Giuffre Trio, and the Shelly Manne Quintet, while the second cast brought together the Miles Davis Quintet, the Oscar Peterson Trio, and the Stan Getz Quartet. • At Dusseldorf’s Rheinhalle theater, Stan Getz was on stage with his own quartet. The playbill announced the saxophonist’s Scandinavian band; however, prior to the tour he had dismissed several of its members and so the cast instead included Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen, two fellow Americans. • Approximately nine months after the concert in Dusseldorf, the expatriate made his comeback in the U.S. and shortly afterwards became world renowned not only among jazz enthusiasts but also with a much wider audience, thanks to the growing popularity of bossa nova music.
