“Any album that gets Norah Jones, Gregory Porter and Jane Monheit behind the mic for a couple of songs apiece is bound to be great. Pianist Harold Mabern’s latest album, Afro Blue, isn’t merely great; it’s an exhilarating joyride … a feel-good program of straightahead jazz that’s fueled by a remarkable lineup.”

“This set, recorded in Japan last year, shows that her voice has lost none of its range or suppleness, and her spirit remains strong — she attacks everything with the gusto of a hot-blooded chanteuse in her prime, and she has the chops to pull it off … [for Ms. Brown] the blues remains a celebration of strength, dignity and survival — which is to say, life.”

Orchestre Toubab, founded in 2010, is an acoustic Afro-tropical jazz quartet. The name of the band is a reference to the mythical “Orchestre Baobab,” a legendary West African band, as well as the common name for Europeans in Western African, referred to as “Toubabs.” This clearly depicts the musical identity of the group, which counts the music of western Africa among their inspirations. • Recorded live at Daniel Léon’s Igloo studio in March 2013 and October 2014. • Includes 32-year labor of love “Freegyan Love Song,” started in 1978 and but not completed until 2010! AUGUST 2015 Oliver’s Cinema is a sonic adventure of lasting resonance by a trio of unlikely instrumentation that suggests a veritable world of sound with nothing more than trumpet, cello, and accordion. Eric Vloeimans is the classically trained, jazz-infused trumpeter whose penchant for long tones, unhurried lyricism, and sudden vocal-like phrasing imbue his playing with a seasoned wisdom that defies his years. In his native Holland, he is respected for his recordings and film soundtracks, and is celebrated for unusual collaborative projects that convincingly explore the overlap of classical and improvisational music. • An evocative blend of sentiment, mood, and melody. • Refreshing originality that remains long after listening. One of Michael Villmow’s main motivations in establishing a big band was to do something different, something “new.” Part of a generation socialized by rock music, his vision of jazz included blues, pop, and fusion. He was looking for like-minded people for his KBB: young musicians considerate of both the traditional big-band approach as well as the more liberal, experimental aesthetics of the JazzhausInitiative. The list of KBB members from 1984 –1995 amounts to a “who’s who” of the Cologne jazz scene, which was — and still remains — a stepping stone for national and international careers. • Available on double CD or double vinyl (with digital download code). • Features saxophonist Bendik Hofseth, who replaced Michael Brecker in the band Steps Ahead in 1987. • Includes Chad Wackerman, percussionist for Frank Zappa and sidekick to guitarist Allan Holdsworth. NEW AGE 21
AUGUST 2015 Based on Mayan culture, Medicine Woman 5 returns the series to its original inspiration, produced in the same style as Medicine Woman 1 & 2. Medwyn makes his guitars sing and cry, with soulful panpipes and bamboo flutes. The music weaves through soundscapes of the rainforest giving a beautiful ambience of light filtering through lush trees and ancient ruins, transporting mind and soul, through healing energy and intention. • The series continues! Medicine Woman is a landmark in new age music. • The first Medicine Woman has been named one of the best new age albums ever, selling over 400,000 copies. • Subsequent volumes sold similarly well, and this volume will surely be received in the same way. AUGUST 2015 Samba Diabaté & Vincent Zanetti Kala Jula: Sangoyi In 2011, when Vincent Zanetti and Samba Diabaté created their duo, they called it Kala Jula (“the nomadic archer”) as a tribute to the ancestor of the Diabate griots. This name referred to his status as a traditional hunter (donso), whose bow (kala) was part of himself and whose hunting campaigns made him travel constantly. With the guitar replacing the bow, the name was perfectly suited for the duo. Aquarela Outros choros do Brazil Choro is probably one of the oldest, and the most deeply Brazilian, of the country’s various musical styles. What creates an element of surprise and marks the originality of this new approach, is the introduction of the oboe and English horn. This project is carried by three virtuoso musicians: two Brazilians, Edu Miranda and Tuniko Goulart, and a Frenchman, Oboman Fillon, all of whom are fond of tradition and improvisation.
