Regarded as the outstanding Polish composer of the high baroque, Gorczycki studied in Prague and Vienna in his early years, and returned to Kraków where he was appointed Magister Capellae at Wawel Cathedral in 1698. Like his predecessor Bartłomiej Pękiel (featured on CRO 16110), Gorczycki wrote in both stile antico and stile moderno; the works featured on this recording display his skill in both genres. As the last great talent of the Polish Baroque era, Gorczycki is certainly deserving of a wider audience. Promo Service to U.S. press and radio. Born into a Jewish family in Vilnius, Steinberg became the student and son-in-law of Rimsky-Korsakov, a classmate of Stravinsky, and the teacher of Shostakovich. Steinberg’s Passion Week was composed 1921–1926; however, the work was never performed complete. Unlike Gretchaninoff ’s similar collection, nearly every movement is based upon medieval chant melodies, arranged by Steinberg in rich choral textures to magnify their intrinsic power and spirituality. As a bonus, the disc features select hymns for Passion Week arranged by Steinberg’s father-in-law, Rimsky-Korsakov. Upcoming Reviews from New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Seattle Times, Los Angeles Times, Boston Globe, Cleveland Plain Dealer, and Washington Post. Although this is apparent in his instrumental works, perhaps the most dramatic instrumental genre — the concerto — did not occupy an important place in his early creative period. But in the time that has passed from his first large opera, Three Sisters (finished in 1997), the concerto is perhaps the most important and most characteristic of his genres. The three concerti on this disc were written in three consecutive years, all to commission. This CD includes Seven, a violin concerto written in 2006 in memory of the seven astronauts who died in the Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy; Levitation, commissioned by the Canary Islands Music Festival and premiered by Sabine & Wolfgang Meyer with the Finnish Radio Orchestra conducted by Sakari Oramo; and CAP-KO, written in 2005 to commemorate the 125th anniversary of Béla Bartók’s birth.

BMC Records Zoltán Kocsis: piano Choir of Selected Students of the Liszt Academy of Music Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest László Dobszay: artistic director, conductor BARTÓK: 27 Choruses in 2 & 3 Parts (BB 111: Vol. 1–Vol. 8) • 42 Choruses (BB 30, 57, 60, 77, 78, 99, 106, 112, in all versions) Bartók’s choral works almost certainly comprise the least-known niche of his oeuvre. The primary reason for this may be that these pieces are strongly linked to language (Hungarian, Romanian, and Slovak folk texts), are for the most part untranslatable, and in translation are unsingable. Certainly, the majority of the compositions are extremely difficult, sometimes setting almost insurmountable hurdles before the performers. Yet these compositions, even purely in terms of number, represent an important thread in the composer’s work and are worth no less than the more imposing pieces. A chronological survey of these works shows that, though clusters occurred in certain periods, the choral genre occupied Bartók for decades in spite of the fact that he wrote for this apparatus mainly to commission, not choosing the format himself.

Peter Sculthorpe created a musical voice that, for the first time, spoke directly of the land, the people, and the spirit of Australia. His music opened new possibilities for Australian composers, and brought a distinctive Australian voice to the world. Henri Joseph TOBI

Première Oeuvre: Six Clarinet Trios Op. 1

This recording is part of Terra Nova’s project focused on a contemporary of Mozart, composer and virtuoso clarinetist Henri Joseph Tobi (1741–1809). The project is aimed at recording his compositions, publishing his scores, and the production of a book about his life, work, and the musical climate in Antwerp in Mozart’s time. The music on this disc consists of a set of six trios for clarinet, violin, and bass. The combination of clarinet and violin is quite unusual; this is charming music that was probably intended for playing in the gilded salons of Antwerp’s grand houses. The sole surviving copy of the score was published in Paris and is currently on display in the Butchers’ Hall Museum in Antwerp. The work is dedicated to Baron Charles de Proli, the musical patron and sponsor of the Antwerp, Brussels, and Paris Opera.

Royal Flemish Philharmonic Royal Flemish Philharmonic Martyn Brabbins: conductor BENOIT: De Schelde A Dutch-language oratorio from one of the pioneers of the Flemish music scene! Peter Benoit was a rarity in the predominantly French-speaking cultural landscape of Belgium, and a Dutch-language oratorio about the Scheldt River was of huge symbolic value. Depicting the river as a lifeline reflected the radical optimism of Benoit’s cultural policy. He had chosen the subject well: few other European rivers had so often been the subject of cross-border conflicts, treaties, lawsuits, sieges, blockades, and battles as the Scheldt. For the libretto, Benoit collaborated with writer Emanuel Hiel, who had previously provided the libretto for Lucifer. Together they created a complex scenario, moving away from the narrative oratorio tradition, in which the river is used to depict a journey through national consciousness.

EM Records Yuko Inoue: viola Francis Pott: piano Alla Kravchuk: soprano Simon Phillips: piano POTT: The Towers of Man (premiere) • “Einzige Tage” song cycle (premiere) In June 2009, Francis Pott attended a performance of his Cello Sonata at the Mananan Arts Festival. Intrigued by the mysterious Milner Tower on Bradda Head, guarding the entrance to the bay, he walked up to it on a blustery summer’s day. By the time he returned, ideas for a companion sonata for viola and piano had come into being. Not long before this, the Japanese-born, London-based violist Yuko Inoue had requested that Francis consider writing her a piece. The Sonata that eventually resulted is a sweepingly romantic halfhour work embodying the composer’s response to the dramatic southwestern coastline of the Isle of Man and, in particular, to two of the various towers dotted along its length: Milner Tower and Corrin’s Tower. On this new CD, the Sonata is paired with “Einzige Tage” (“Unrepeatable Days”), a cycle featuring song settings inspired by the Russian poets Boris Pasternak and Anna Akhmatova.

The Schubert Ensemble Simon Blendis: violin Douglas Paterson: viola Jane Salmon: cello William Howard: piano FAURÉ: Piano Quartet No. 1 in C minor, Op. 15 • Piano Quartet No. 2 in G minor, Op. 45 At first glance, Gabriel Fauré seems to fit neatly into the history of French music as a pupil of Saint-Saëns and a teacher of Ravel. Yet he stands apart from the mainstream because of his unique musical language, and because rather than writing colorful orchestral pieces he preferred to work in the comparatively modest media of the song, solo piano, and chamber music. With the exception of the late String Quartet, all of his chamber works combine the piano — Fauré’s own instrument as a performer — with strings. Among the earlier works, written in the late 1870s and mid-1880s, are the two Quartets for piano and string trio presented here. Since their first concert in January 1983, the Schubert Ensemble has established itself as one of the world’s leading exponents of music for piano and strings. Regularly giving around 50 concerts a year, the ensemble has performed in over 40 different countries, has over 80 commissions to its name, has recorded over 30 critically acclaimed CDs, and is familiar to British audiences through regular broadcasts on BBC Radio 3.

Described as the last “Classical” and first “Romantic” composer, it is really impossible to pin a meaningful label on Schubert. He was, and still is, a very special case: a lonely figure in musical history, and a dreamer who brought a previously unknown degree of intimacy, despair, hope, and disappointment into music. Schubert was a sincere, shy, and vulnerable man (though did not lack confidence in himself as an artist), and his personality is clearly reflected in his music.

Heather Jamieson: soprano Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Chamber Ensemble Peter Manning: conductor MAHLER: Symphony No. 4 in G (arr. Simon) Mahler composed some of the most powerful and emotive symphonic music of his age. As well as the big melodies, his symphonies are also full of beautiful moments of chamber music. This has inspired various arrangers to distill Mahler’s monumental symphonic structures down to the more intimate proportions of a small chamber ensemble. The 2007 Klaus Simon arrangement is one of the most popular, and highlights the intimacy of Mahler’s music while internalizing the power of the climaxes. This ensemble of talented students originally came together for an epic project with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in 2014. Spread over a four-month period, the group performed side by side with the Orchestra on a three-city tour to India conducted by James Macmillan, with soloist Nicola Benedetti. In order to capture the particular frisson of this group before many graduated, Nimbus brought them together in June 2014 for this special recording project.

Ensemble Ylajali’s new CD Mary’s Song presents a selection of contemporary Norwegian a cappella settings of Marian texts. Mary is without a doubt the most influential female figure in sacred music, a fact that inspired the ensemble’s decision to make a recording of music devoted to her. Mary has secured the place of women in an otherwise male-dominated part of history; recent research and political currents have revealed further sides of Mary as a historical figure, both in the arts and in academia, making her a fascinating figure for women today. PLAYABLE IN ALL CD PLAYERS. For optimal sound, use compatible surround sound system.

Los Libros de Laúd: Musical Footprints in the Colombina Library

Hernando Colon (1488–1539), second son to explorer Christopher Columbus, was educated in court. He became a page first to Prince John, and then to Queen Isabella, between 1494 and 1502. An exceptional bibliophile and a cosmographer of renown, he managed to put together an amazing collection of 3,204 etchings — which included works by Albrecht Durer and Lucas van Leyden — as well as a library that comprised more than 15,000 items. In the Colombina Library existed an important section of books of practical music and treatises on theory of the music, printed and handwritten, personally acquired by Hernando during his voyages. This first CD in an expansive series explores lute music from the Colombina Library, expertly played by Miguel Rincón.

IBS Classical Joaquín Clerch: guitar Hispanian Symphony Orchestra Enrique García Asensio: conductor RODRIGO: Concierto de Aranjuez • ARRIAGA: Sinfonía para gran orquesta On this delightful disc history and nature fuse, offering us a charming walk through the gardens of Spanish music. Joaquín Clerch performs the muchloved Concierto de Aranjuez and offers a renewed reading of this popular work. He shuns the picturesque and excessive lyricism, instead seeking a balance between great technique with precision in the sonority of the strumming and crystalline plucking drawing counterpoints, motifs, or rhythmic patterns from this well-known score. In Arriaga’s Sinfonía para gran orquesta the performer and the Hispanian Symphony Orchestra expose internal structures, melodies, and color; they are attentive to the instrumental contrasts, the breadth of register and the counterpoint, but also revel in the lyricism of Arriaga’s inspired melodies.

The origins of the accordion can be traced back to the Chinese Sheng, though the instrument we know as an accordion today was patented by Cyrillus Damian in Vienna in 1829. Popular the world over in various forms as a folk instrument, it was only in the latter half of the 20th century that the development of the “free-bass” system — which allowed for the freedom to move away from the arrangement of pre-set chords on the left-hand side of the instrument — gave accordionists the opportunity to cross into the world of mainstream classical music. The accordion is a very expressive instrument, capable of producing a wonderful variety of timbres from its registers, with a large dynamic range. This disc contains some of the repertoire for the instrument in both solo and chamber capacities, with a range of music spanning four centuries from Baroque sonatas to more contemporary works.
