With the long-awaited release of Mary Don’t Take Me On No Bad Trip, Funky Delicacies makes available the very best psych/funk music ever made. Originally scheduled for release on the famed Chess label, this album was scrapped in the early ‘70s because it was deemed too trippy for Chess’ reputation. Muddy Waters and Donny Hathaway appear as session musicians on this psychedelic funk/soul offering!

Wizard Wiz was absolutely the most outrageous personality of the old school. His production team, like Spoonie’s, spanned a broad range of old school beatmasters: OC of Fearless Four as well as Pumpkin, Marley Marl, and Ced Gee of Ultramagnetic MCs. He has been sampled by the Beastie Boys and was recently profiled in The Source.

Robin Ireland, viola J.S. BACH (tr. R. Ireland): Sonata in G minor for unaccompanied violin, BWV 1001, tr. for viola in C minor • Chaconne from Partita in D minor for unaccompanied violin, BWV 1004, tr. for viola in G minor • J.S. BACH (tr. Watson): Suite No. 6 in D for unaccompanied cello, BWV 1012, tr. for viola in G

Robin Ireland was the violist for The Lindsays (formerly The Lindsay String Quartet) for over 20 years. Although these works were originally written for other instruments, the use of a viola as on this recording comes from Bach’s second son, Carl Philipp Emanuel, who wrote that his father “enjoyed playing the viola above all.” Bach wrote transcriptions of his own works and there is little doubt that, had he been aware of the possibilities afforded by the modified viola, he may well have transcribed these himself.

Tuba soloist Harvey Phillips is one of the pioneering great artists on that instrument in modern times, a legend in his own day. If there were a Hall of Fame for bass players, the late Robert Gladstone, Orin O’Brien, Alvin Brehm, and their beloved teacher Frederick Zimmerman, performing here, would be among the earliest inductees. Schuller’s Bass Quartet was recorded in 1960, two days after the world premiere in Carnegie Hall. Schuller’s Capriccio for Tuba is heard here in a highly expressive, soulful performance by the incomparable Harvey Phillips, and a fine student orchestra under the composer’s direction.

Felix MENDELSSOHN Symphonies 1 & 5 Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra/Roger Norrington, conductor ORDER DATE OCTOBER 21, 2005

MENDELSSOHN: Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 11 • Symphony No. 5 in D, Op. 107 “Reformation” • Concert introduction in English by Roger Norrington

Following the global success of his earlier recordings of Beethoven and Berlioz, Sir Roger Norrington leads his Stuttgart ensemble on a voyage of discovery into the works of Felix Mendelssohn. Norrington and the SWR play with the “pure tone” so talked about by the old masters, before the arrival of 20th century vibrato. These recordings give the opportunity to hear how a modern symphony orchestra can reconnect with its roots and embrace the traditions of the past. Recorded live at the 2004 Stuttgart European Musical Festival, with the conductor’s spoken introductions to the concert in English. CD: HNS 93132 (R)

Franz SCHUBERT

Heilig, heiling, heilig ist Gott

Winterreise

Hannoversche Hofkapelle/Trompeten Consort Friedemann Immer/Collegium vocale Siegen/Ulrich Stötzel, conductor

“A solid interpretation by two accomplished performers who express themselves well!” — Opera Today

TELEMANN: Heilig, heilig, heilig ist Gott, TVWV 2:6 (Hamburg 1747), oratorio for soloists, choir & orchestra

Andreas Schmidt, baritone/Rudolf Jansen, piano SCHUBERT: Winterreise, D911 (complete song cycle)

Telemann scholar and period instrument specialist Ulrich Stötzel continues his exploration of this great Baroque genius in this new recording. The festival music Heilig, heilig, heilig ist Gott (TVWV 2:6), is one of the sweeping compositions that Telemann composed between 1738 and 1762 for various ceremonies and festivities for the prosperous city of Hamburg.

Winterreise is perhaps the greatest song cycle ever written. Franz Schubert set to music the evocative poetry of his contemporary, German lyricist Wilhelm Müller. Baritone Andreas Schmidt returns to this masterpiece at the height of his powers and with a lifetime of experience, in an exceptional continuation of his series for Hänssler.

All the more surprising then, that though frequently quoted in music literature, it has not yet been the subject of primary research. Schuricht’s Bruckner interpretations, especially his later recordings, are among the most lucid and insightful readings ever committed to vinyl. Few conductors have approached these familiar scores with his sense of awe and reverence. Neither rhetorical nor labored, Schuricht allows Bruckner’s vision to take wing in these 1951 and 1954 recordings. This is the only available recording that offers both of these giant symphonic works for the price of a single disc! NOVEMBER 2005

Felix MENDELSSOHN String Quartets, Vol. 3

• A total of eight works by Mendelssohn have come down to us which can be ascribed to the genre of the string quartet. Already in his first proper quartets we can see that the young composer was not only building on the classical models of Haydn and Mozart, but had also made an intensive and creative study of Beethoven’s late quartet works • The Henschel Quartet have been awarded a number of prizes for their interpretations, e.g. for their much-recognized recording of Ginastera string quartets for Arte Nova • The Henschel Quartet has won numerous prizes since 1995, and their highly acclaimed stand-in for the Juilliard Quartet in London’s Wigmore Hall, broadcasted by the BBC, led to international recognition as one of today’s finest chamber ensembles

“Hans Graf enjoys Dutilleux’s confidence, and from this recording it’s easy to see why. The detail is all here, but so is the control of long paragraphs – few recordings of the slow movement of the First Symphony have moved me as much as this one…the work is undoubtedly a masterpiece and the final resolution on to D flat major one of the great moments of 20th-century music.” — Gramophone Bordeaux Aquitaine National Orchestra/Hans Graf, conductor/ Jean-Guihen Queyras, cello

Leopold Mozart (1719 –1787) was a fine musician and composer, widely admired and only forgotten because of his even more brilliant son, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He wrote approximately 70 symphonies of his own, some of which have been lost, and they apparently made a great impression on his son. In Wolfgang’s earliest symphonies, written in his childhood, strong influences of his father are recognizable. The Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra Vilnius was founded 30 years ago. Their collaboration with conductor Georg Mais began in 1994 with numerous concerts in Lithuania and central Europe.

He was awarded the Gustav-Mahler-Goldmedaille in 1985 for his performances of the complete works of Mahler and is the author of the book Die Symphonien Gustav Mahlers. He has put great effort into performing seldom-played works, including the compositions of Wilhelm Furtwängler, whose symphonies he is editing as the president of the Furtwängler Society. Antonio de Cabezón (1510–1566) is perhaps the best known of all composers of the Spanish Renaissance, particularly for his organ works, but this acclaimed series from Stradivarius provides a rare overview of his instrumental and vocal compositions. The present disc contains pieces from two groupings of instrumental versions of what were originally works for voices (“motetes” and “canciones”), which are alternated with “tientos” – pieces written purely for instruments. The motets and five-part songs on this recording were written by others, such as Josquin, Lassus and Clemens non Papa, and then “reinvented” by Cabezón for instruments. The continuing series of the complete Scarlatti sonatas on Stradivarius continues with a unique installment by organist Maria Cecilia Farina. Scarlatti’s sonatas are almost always heard on the harpsichord, but many scholars feel that some of them, especially those in a rigorous and austere style, were meant for the organ. Much of the repertoire of that period was designated “for keyboards” and it was up to the performer to choose which sort, in accordance with their experience and ability. The organ was generally not treated any differently from other “quilled” instruments. The organ used on this recording is one of the few in Italy with the right layout, keyboard, pedal extensions and tuning for 18th-century music.

CD: OTM 1008 (R)

• If there is a musical counterpart to the writers of the Lost Generation, it is surely New Jersey-born composer George Antheil (1900 –1959) • Antheil’s early career captured the spirit of a whole generation of young American artists who went abroad to complete their education, refine their tastes, live cheaply, and enjoy the far freer artistic and sexual milieu • For Antheil, this period (1922 –1933) was marked by his friendships with famous literary and artistic figures – Joyce, Hemingway, Pound, William Carlos Williams, Cocteau, Satie, Breton, and Aragon • Their fascination with this brilliant, irresistible, and tireless young American composer was primarily inspired by his peculiar music: a personal fusion of American jazz and Stravinsky’s primitivism mixed with mechanical and percussive patterns • Founded in 1992, the Del Sol String Quartet has continuously emphasized a focus on new music and has worked with many living composers as well as producing their own concerts in an effort to reach new audiences

Ensemble Respighi/Federico Ferri, director/Marco Rogliano, violin/Annamaria Morini, recorders

CALDARA: Morte e sepoltura di Cristo (oratorio) • Missa dolorosa • Sacred Motets (8)

Antonio Caldara (1670–1736) was a prolific and important composer in the service of the Imperial Court in Vienna when these sacred words were written. In this music, the suffering of Mary at the foot of Christ’s cross is given a force that is truly theatrical rather than merely descriptive.

VIVALDI: The Four Seasons from Il Cimento dell’Armonia e dell’Invenzione, Op. 8 • GUARNIERI: Stagioni (Seasons)

It will soon be 300 years since Antonio Vivaldi wrote this collection of four concertos in 1712, known popularly as The Four Seasons as they bear vivid verbal descriptions of activities common to each of the parts of the year. The words are matched by the descriptive powers of the music, which is remarkably able to suggest cool breezes, icy blasts, barking dogs, and everything else that is common to each of the seasons then and now. A bonus is a modern interpretation of the seasons by Adriano Guarnieri.

Francesco BARSANTI

6 Sonatas a quattro

Solo Flute Sonatas

Ensemble de I Virtuosi Italiana

I Fiori Musicali/Roberto Loreggian, director/Maria Giovanna Fiorentino, recorder

ROSSINI: 6 Sonatas a quattro for 2 violin, cello & bass

BARSANTI: Flute Sonatas Nos. 1– 6

These early works (Rossini was 12!) were only discovered and published in the 1950s, with the composer’s own note from years later attached, calling them “horrendous” works that were first performed by “dogs.” Actually, they are pieces of stupefying skill and attractiveness considering the age of the composer and his lack of training. I Virtuosi Italiani have been performing successfully in important cities in Italy and abroad for years, also with soloists and conductors of international rank.

Francesco Barsanti (1690 –1772) was one of the many extraordinary Italian instrumentalists – virtuosi and composers – who throughout the 18th century, traveling across the whole of Europe, contributed in a decisive way to the definitive success of instrumental music and the formation of an international language. The ensemble I Fiori Musicali consists of two recorders, basso continuo and other instruments specializing in the repertoire of the 17th and 18th centuries, alone and in conjunction with other chamber groups. OPERA BENIAMINO GIGLI Ave Maria (German & Italian Versions) “The sight of Gigli singing impresses the memory: the mouth opens cavernously and it is like the sudden exposure of the heart under surgery.” — Opera Now Beniamino Gigli, Erna Berger Ave Maria (both the German and Italian versions of the film, each with English subtitles)

DVD: BCS DVD 494 (2O)

• In this feature film Gigli sings scenes from La traviata with Erna Berger, La Boheme, Hänsel und Gretel and “Di quella pira,” plus songs by Ernesto De Curtis and Alois Melichar. In the Traviata denunciation scene, Gigli is at his most impassioned • “Gigli has ample opportunities to display his art, the true, honest quality of his singing saving him and the plot from sentimentality. One gains a wonderful idea of the disarming simplicity and generosity of the man, which wholly exonerates him from a charge of ham acting. The voice itself pours out of him in the well-known, heartfelt manner, uniquely his, a honeyed mezza voce a thing to wonder at.” — Gramophone • Bonus: a 48-page booklet Gigli: The Public Life by Stefan Zucker. This is the only substantial biography of him in English (apart from his memoirs). It provides details about his rift with the Met and the only treatment in 60 years of the charges brought against him by his countrymen that he collaborated with the Nazis. Tito Gobbi, Gino Sinimberghi, Italo Tajo, Nelly Corradi, Gina Lollobrigida; Giuseppe Morelli, conductor DONIZETTI: L’elisir d’amore (complete opera)

• An enchanting operatic film reproduced at last at the correct speed and pitch, this is an affectionate, warm-hearted, endearing Elisir, beautifully photographed with lovely outdoor scenes • “Gino Sinimberghi sings sweetly but without crooning, sounding like Gigli with Lauri Volpi’s squillo...his voice has body, also metal on high notes.” — Stefan Zucker • “Heard here in her best role, Corradi is at times adorable, at others catty, always feminine, with that, for me, beguiling voce infantile (a ‘white,’ child-like sound).” — Stefan Zucker • “As Belcore, Gobbi surprises with still another of his facets: the ability to sing florid music accurately and effortlessly.” — Stefan Zucker • “Tajo’s Dulcamara is not so much a comic character as a Mephistopheles: cold, beyond passion, manipulative, a little malign, an unscrupulous deus ex machina – also a bit of a dandy.” — Stefan Zucker • This DVD has PCM Audio rather than compressed formats such as Dolby Digital

Giacomo PUCCINI Tosca (2 DVDs) “ ‘Vittoria! Vittoria!’ No wonder all the backroom boys and torturechamber skivvies pile in during the course of that top note to see what is going on. And there he stands too, smiling and looking like a million dollars. Corelli was 35 when the film was made, but at such moments, and indeed most others, could well be in his mid-twenties. When he sings ‘O dolci mani’ the face as well as the voice tells of real feeling, and in ‘Amaro sol per te’ the sight of him certainly supports the sound, which is magnificent.” — Gramophone Franco Corelli/ Maria Caniglia/Giangiacomo Guelfi PUCCINI: Tosca (complete opera)

• The film that made Corelli a star! • Unlike other versions of this famous opera film, the Bel Canto edition is squarely on pitch. A different company’s version runs four percent too fast and thus is four and a half minutes shorter! • Along with the Tebaldi/Loren Aida, this Tosca is one of the two most famous opera films of the 1950s • Bonus DVD: The radio interview of Franco Corelli by Stefan Zucker, May 12, 1990. Includes detailed discussions of the strengths and weaknesses of many singers, from Maria Callas, Mario Del Monaco, Anita Cerquetti, Maria Caniglia and Birgit Nilsson to unknowns. He also counterattacks Neil Shicoff, and talks about what he would do differently if he did it all over again

Cotton Club Stomp: 1929 –1932

• Duke Ellington was a class act who excelled in every facet of jazz: he was a talented stride pianist who was always updating his style, an innovative arranger, a prolific composer, and a great bandleader who led a classic big band for 49 years! • The first Duke Ellington reissue on Jazz Legends, The Bubber Miley Years, covers the 1924-January 1929 period. In late January 1929, Miley was fired from the band due to increasing unreliability caused by his drinking. Cootie Williams was hired in his place and he grew to become one of Ellington’s most valuable soloists, not only playing plunger mute solos in the Miley style but also taking open solos that displayed his own individuality • Otherwise, there were very few personnel changes in the Ellington band from 1929–1932, the period from which the 21 selections on this volume are drawn. All seven of the horn players who were in Duke’s orchestra in the spring of 1929 were major soloists. While Cootie Williams generally took the muted solos, Freddy Jenkins was a hot player influenced most by Louis Armstrong, and Arthur Whetsol played quietly and lyrically, although sometimes the roles of the three trumpeters overlapped. Nanton’s wide array of sounds were always colorful, Barney Bigard was a fluent New Orleans-style clarinetist, Johnny Hodges developed into the leading altoist in jazz, and Harry Carney was the first important baritone sax soloist • This second volume of the Duke on Jazz Legends features 21 absolutely classic tracks gathered onto a single CD for the very first time, with remastered sound, detailed notes by Scott Yanow, and rare historic photos

• Louis Armstrong’s recordings of the 1920s are among the most celebrated in the history of jazz – and with good reason, for during this period he nearly single-handedly changed jazz into an art form that showcased virtuoso soloists • Armstrong’s phrasing (legato lines rather than staccato), his ability to “tell a story” in his solos, his beautiful tones on cornet and trumpet, his impressive musicianship, his ability to make any song sound bluish and the joy in his playing; all of these traits became hugely influential. In addition, his singing reflected the phrasing of his trumpet playing, he was a major force in popularizing scat singing and his very distinctive voice would forever after be imitated by others • During the period featured on this recording, Satch moved from Chicago to New York and moved away from the combo recordings he had become famous for to focus more on recordings with big bands. This classic collection features 21 of Satch’s most beloved recordings from this New York period, gathered together on a single CD for the very first time, with remastered sound, detailed notes by Scott Yanow and rare historic photos

He was also an excellent trumpeter, he occasionally played clarinet and tenor, and he was an influential & prolific arranger, as well as a skilled composer whose songs included “Blues in the Night” and “When Lights Are Low,” and a talented if under-publicized leader of big bands • Throughout his career he was always a professional, having fun with music but showing up on time, making deadlines and being very consistent in his work. • Noted jazz guitarist/historian Dr. Souchon recorded these unprecedented and important sessions in an attempt to capture some of the never-before-heard sounds from early jazz • Souchon grew up in New Orleans and, as a child, heard legendary musicians who influenced the greats of jazz but never recorded themselves. Here, he recreates the songs of that era! • Of all the Night Train New Orleans releases, this is the oldest and most traditional, for Souchon is a legend in New Orleans circles as a repository of ragtime and Dixieland tradition

Se l l i n g P o i n ts • As traditional New Orleans jazz has evolved over the course of this century, only a handful of its musicians have received lasting recognition. Hundreds of quality players have been active, but have remained virtually unknown to the public • Now that the famed leaders of New Orleans jazz have left us and no longer need the services of a funky-butt hometown drummer or the rich tone of a New Orleans clarinet, scores of names have been reduced to footnotes, and many more have disappeared altogether. This album attempts to help right this wrong!

“A set of timeless beauty, spanning almost half a century, from a great lady of American vernacular music...” — Living Blues

“A handful of field recordings of Etta Baker’s music, released in the 1960s, were enough to influence many aspiring traditional guitarists, from Bob Dylan to Taj Mahal.” — NPR.org “The ‘premier woman Piedmont blues guitar instrumentalist’ is a wordy but accurate description of 87-year-old Etta Baker. One of the last pickers who was around when the music was first being recorded, Baker’s years of practice are manifested in these wonderful recordings…this is music you never get tired of listening to. Newcomers to guitar should buy this album, both to marvel at the intricate technique and to amuse themselves with how frustratingly difficult it can be.” — All Music Guide “Etta and Cora show us how music used to be played a long time ago.
