His Etude pour le violon formant 36 caprices are still well known among violin students today, while harpists practice his seventy-two exercises for harp. • In the late 1790s, Fiorillo printed his own six quartets for flute, violin, viola, and cello, possibly modelled on those of Françoise-Andrè Philidor. •

Battista Columbro: director LUCHESI: La Passione di Gesù Christo This Passion setting by Andrea Luchesi (1741-1801) was probably written in 1776, just before Luchesi was named Kapellmeister “for life” of the Principate of Cologne and Bonn. • Luchesi strengthened the chapel (which had become one of the best in Germany), and built up the sacred repertoire to match the importance of the principate. • At the beginning of 1776, the chapel began to commission original sacred works (often composed exclusively by the Kapellmeister) for each event of the liturgical year. • Luchesi intended to give public demonstrations of the results achieved in the chapel, and thus was born La Passione di Gesù Christo, created exclusively for the chapel of the prince of Cologne. • For this composition of non-liturgical sacred music, Luchesi reworked and set to music a libretto by •
the poet Metastasio, which had previously been used by other composers.

Of the composers who wrote for these forces, the name of Niccolò Paganini certainly stands out, but others such as Ferdinando Carulli, Filippo Gragnani, and Bartolomeo Bortolazzi also enjoyed a certain notoriety during the course of their artistic careers. • Alongside this specific repertoire, there undoubtedly existed another that would have been “borrowed,” so to speak, from ensembles consisting of guitar and a soprano instrument. But which mandolin and guitar are we talking about? There is some confusion surrounding the term “mandolino” among even the most expert scholars and musicians. This live 1969 broadcast performance of Debussy’s operatic masterpiece—and one of the seminal vocal works of the 20th century— has long been unavailable, and is now welcomed back in re-mastered sound at budget price on Opera d’Oro. Real French singers in the three principal roles make a vast difference stylistically, and a major world conductor at the height of his fresh powers is a special bonus.
Puccini’s first opera, Le villi, was premiered in 1884 on a triple bill with two other short works now forgotten. It was the surprise hit of the evening, but the little opera’s appeal was not long lasting—it soon disappeared from world stages except for occasional presentation as a novelty once Puccini was more famous for other works. GLUCK: Paride ed Elena (complete opera) VERDI: Il corsaro (complete opera) Gluck wrote three “reform operas” with Ranieri de’ Calzabigi: Orfeo ed Euridice and Alceste have been famous over the centuries, but the third, Paride ed Elena, based on the Homeric story of the abduction of the Spartan beauty Helen by the Trojan Paris, seemed to make little initial impression even though it contains some of Gluck’s finest music. After its premiere in 1770, it disappeared from the boards until revived in the historic 1968 live performance preserved on this recording. Even so, its popularity remained low until another revival in 2005, which had far greater publicity.

Listed as thirteenth among Verdi’s stage works, Il corsaro was actually conceived years before it was finished. By the time it was finally produced in 1848, its style seemed something of a throwback, and the premiere was an unmitigated disaster. Many subsequent writers dismissed it as one of Verdi’s worst operas, but this opinion has been challenged in recent years. Its numerous musical beauties outweigh any hesitations induced by its old-fashioned story, and this 1971 live performance shows it at its best.

American Warriors: The Great Generals Pershing, Eisenhower, Bradley, Patton John J. Pershing Pershing commanded the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) in Europe during World War I. Upon his return in 1919, Congress awarded him the title “General of the Armies of the United States,” previously accorded only to George Washington.
Dwight D. Eisenhower During World War II, Eisenhower proved to be the outstanding general of the war. He was chosen to lead Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of North Africa, and as Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe. He supervised Operation Overlord, the invasion of France, and the subsequent invasion of Nazi Germany. Eisenhower served as President of the US from 1953–1961.
Omar N. Bradley During World War II, Bradley commanded the 12th Army Group, the largest body of American soldiers ever to serve under one field commander. His troops smashed the Nazi counter offensive in the Ardennes at the Battle of the Bulge, and helped capture the last standing bridge over the River Rhine at Remagen.
George S. Patton, Jr. Patton commanded the 3rd Army following the Normandy invasion and played a crucial role during the Battle of the Bulge. A true icon of World War II, Patton earned the nickname “Old Blood and Guts” for his aggressiveness, discipline, and zeal in combat.

American Warriors: The Great Generals Stilwell, Arnold, MacArthur, Marshall Joseph W. Stilwell During World War I, Stilwell was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal. During World War II, he commanded the China-Burma-India Theater. Nicknamed “Vinegar Joe” for his acerbic style, he often clashed with Chiang Kai-shek and was ultimately relieved of his command by President Roosevelt.
Henry “Hap” Arnold An aviation pioneer, Arnold is widely considered the father of the modern US Air Force. He was the first and only general of the Air Force, and is also the only person to be a five-star general in two armed services.
Douglas MacArthur MacArthur rose to Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in World War II. His statement, “I shall return,” became the battle cry of the Pacific campaign and for the liberation of the Philippine Islands from Japanese occupation. In the Korean War, he served as commander of UN Forces.

The Battle of Midway The battle of Midway marked the easternmost expansion of Japanese power in the Pacific during World War II. The victory of US forces marked the turning of the tide in the Pacific War, barely six months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. At Midway, US forces successfully sank the bulk of the Japanese carrier fleet while avoiding a trap set by the Japanese Navy. This was the first sea battle fought entirely by carrier-based planes—a battle where neither side’s ships ever came within visual contact of the other. It marked a new chapter in the annals of naval warfare and set the pattern that would dominate naval warfare in the Pacific Theater.
