R ev i ew s “Easily the most sensual album of the year… continuing along the path of fusing synthesizers, voice and ambient-dance beats…Diane Arkenstone displays the diversity of her soft, subtle vocals throughout the album, which carry the music along in an instrumental-like way. It all sounds simplistic enough, but in reality, this album is full of indescribable depth and musical complexity that shines like a prism, weaving many colors throughout.” — Ambient Musings

“Expansive like a bright summer sunrise…another

wonderful album from the Arkenstone family. A flowing mixture of percussion, celestial vocals, and soothing textures of sound…[feature] shining examples of the dynamic blend of Diane’s dreamy vocals and the very danceable rhythms that make this album sparkle.” — Inner Change

“The Samurai Collection is no mild-mannered presentation of Oriental music. Flute and the traditional koto are joined by electric guitar and thundering taiko drums in this vibrant celebration of the mystical realm of the samurai. Like the combination of old and new in instrumentation, the music is both ancient and modern, calling forth visions of misty mountain peaks, remote villages, dancers, drummers and temple chanters.” — Zookeeper Tr ac k L i st i n g

“Ton Koopman once again seems to be able to express the whole range of Bach’s sacred music from spiritual exaltation to religious terror, from giddiest joy to deepest sorrow, from festive celebration to personal mortification. With a small choir and a small orchestra recorded in an intimate acoustic, Koopman’s performances have the clarity of a chamber music ensemble. Through the clarity and humanity of their music-making, Koopman’s performances seem to express the essence of Bach’s sacred music – its exaltation, its terror, its joy, its sorrow, its celebration, and even its mortification. And, once again, Koopman’s recordings are wonderfully balanced in a luminous acoustic.” — All Music Guide Sandrine Piau, Johanette Zomer & Sibylla Rubens, sopranos/Bogna Bartosz & Nathalie Stutzmann, altos/Paul Agnew, Jörg Dürmüller & Christoph Prégardien, tenors/Klaus Mertens, bass/The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir/Ton Koopman, conductor

After bringing the Baltimore Symphony to major status, he became musical director of the Aspen Music Festival and then took the helm of Zurich’s beloved Tonhalle Orchestra • Zinman’s discography of some 100 recordings has won five Grammys and two Grands Prix du Disque • Founded in 1868, the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra is Switzerland’s oldest symphony orchestra. Today it gives over 90 concerts each season, featuring more than 50 different programs with the world’s leading conductors and solo artists • David Zinman’s acclaimed complete recordings of the Schumann symphonies employ newly edited sources. DAVIES Conducts BRUCKNER Symphony No. 4

CD: ANO 604880 (C)

• The “Romantic” has always been the most popular symphony by Bruckner. It has been most often heard in the version of 1878 with a new finale written in 1880. However, it was originally created in 1874, albeit in a very different form • The original version was first performed only in 1975 at the Bruckner-fest in Linz and published in the Bruckner complete edition in the same year. This is one of the rare recordings in which the listener can fully surrender to the fantastic, splendid sound of Bruckner’s original intentions • One of the most innovative and eclectic conductors in the classical music world, Dennis Russell Davies has succeeded in challenging and inspiring audiences on both sides of the Atlantic • Since 1980, he has lived in Germany but maintained an active presence on the North American scene as a regular guest conductor with the major orchestras and opera houses of New York and Chicago • In the fall of 2002, he began his post as Chief Conductor of the Linz Opera, and Chief Conductor and Music Director of the Bruckner Orchestra Linz. • Davies’ prolific recordings as conductor as well as pianist number well over 60. Wilhelm FURTWÄNGLER Symphony No. 2 (2 CDs) ORDER DATE FEBRUARY 18, 2005

Weimar Staatskapelle /George Alexander Albrecht, conductor FURTWÄNGLER: Symphony No. 2 in E minor

Famous to the world as one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, Wilhelm Furtwängler (1886 –1954) preferred to be thought of as a composer. Of his works, the Symphony No. 2 (written just after World War II) has received the most attention. In the last year of his life, he rewrote the ending. George Alexander Albrecht has become one of the most versatile conductors of his generation. He was awarded the Gustav-Mahler-Goldmedaille in 1985 for his performances of the complete works of Mahler and is the author of the book Die Symphonien Gustav Mahlers. He has put great effort into performing seldom-played works, including the compositions of Wilhelm Furtwängler, whose symphonies he is editing as the president of the Furtwängler Society.

• Historic 1951 recordings of two masterpieces of the violin concerto repertory, featuring legendary artists • Great Russian violinist David Oistrakh (1908 –74) made a specialty of the Brahms concerto but played the Dvorˇák only sporadically. His affinity for the latter score is apparent in this 1951 performance, however • Kirill Kondrashin (1914 –1981) is considered, along with Svetlanov and Rozhdestvensky, one of the three greatest Russian conductors of the 20th century • He became conductor of the famed Bolshoi Theater in Moscow in 1943, but after 1958 turned his attention almost exclusively to symphonic music • Kondrashin became successively conductor of the USSR State Symphony Orchestra and the Moscow Philharmonic, but in 1978 sought asylum in Amsterdam, where he was a frequent guest conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra

SHOSTAKOVICH: Preludes & Fugues Nos. 17– 24

• J.S. Bach died in 1750. Exactly 200 years later, Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich made a pilgrimage to Leipzig to hear Tatiana Nikolaeva play at (and win) the J.S. Bach Competition. In her honor, he began composing his own series of 24 keyboard preludes and fugues modeled after Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier • The Shostakovich works have remained relatively unknown until recent years, despite being proclaimed by many critics as among his greatest masterworks; to a degree, this is because he is principally associated with orchestral music • This disc offers the last eight of the complete series, as recorded in 1987 by Nikolaeva, who played these works for over 30 years • The work is dedicated to Mme. Nikolaeva, who gave the first performance in 1952. She recorded it three times, and died suddenly after playing it in a 1992 concert in San Francisco • Born in 1924, Tatiana Nikolaeva studied at the Moscow Conservatory and began teaching there in 1959. She became one of the most beloved instructors in the history of that august institution • Nikolaeva possessed a magnificent technique and an extraordinary memory (she knew 50 piano concertos by heart, from Bach to Stravinsky), but her playing was noted mainly for its strong passion and sense of purpose

• Historic 1979 and 1984 recordings of two of Rachmaninov’s most colorful compositions! • Evgeni Svetlanov became principal conductor of the USSR Symphony Orchestra in 1965 and won all the highest honors of his country in music. He died in Moscow in May of 2002, at the age of 74 • Along with Kondrashin and Rozhdestvensky, Svetlanov was one of the three most famous Russian conductors of the later 20th century. His readings, especially of Russian music, were noted for their intelligence, balance and idiomatic flavor • Rachmaninov discovered Edgar Allan Poe’s The Bells (1849) in 1912 and was so taken with Poe’s imagery that he set to work almost immediately composing a choral symphony on the subject. He conducted the premiere performance himself in St. Petersburg on November 30th of that same year • The Spring, a cantata for baritone, chorus and orchestra, was composed in 1902, following the completion of the ever-popular Second Piano Concerto

SVETLANOV Conducts KALINNIKOV & RIMSKY-KORSAKOV

• Historic recordings from 1975 –1985 • Under Svetlanov’s direction, the USSR Symphony Orchestra became a well-drilled, virtuoso ensemble while maintaining its peculiarly Russian timbral character. Svetlanov recorded widely, and his interpretations are prized for their color and vitality • Vasily Kalinnikov (1866 –1901) is not a well-known name today, but had he lived longer (he died two days before his 35th birthday), he would likely be a major figure in Russian music • Kalinnikov’s First Symphony, considered his masterpiece, was first performed in Kiev in 1897, to universal acclaim • It took Rimsky-Korsakov four years to complete his first opera, The Maid of Pskov, based on a drama about Tsar Ivan the Terrible. The suite offers four excerpts from the opera • The Noblewoman Vera Sheloga is based on the same drama that inspired The Maid of Pskov, though this one-act opera was conceived in 1898 as a separate work. Nowadays it is often performed as a prologue to the earlier work. The overture is such an attractive, action-packed opener that one wonders why it’s so rarely performed or recorded today

• Two great pianists, two great recordings – one great work! • Vladimir Horowitz and Artur Rubinstein, both legends in their own lifetimes, were the most famous pianists of the 20th century • Once friends, they later became fierce rivals and, thus, their differing readings of the same famous masterwork make for a fascinating comparison • These are historic live performances – the Horowitz from 1953 and the Rubinstein from 1946 • The orchestra is the New York Philharmonic in both cases, but with George Szell conducting for Horowitz and Artur Rodzinski for Rubinstein • These are the best remastered transfers available of these two performances, with interesting and informative booklet notes • This rare live Horowitz recording is considered by some connoisseurs to be the greatest, most exciting interpretation of this concerto on record • Service to French and English CBC, several English and French newspapers in Canada, and several specialized publications including Diapason, Répertoire, Le Monde de la Musique, La Scena Musicale, ClassicsToday.com and more

• Gavin Bryars’ numerous recordings have been among the best-selling CDs by any contemporary composer. Two of his albums, The Sinking of the Titanic and Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet, have sold more than 250,000 copies • Gavin Bryars, born in Yorkshire in 1943, started as a jazz bassist and later studied composition with John Cage. He has composed prolifically for the theater as well as the concert hall, and has written three full-length operas • BIPED was commissioned by the Merce Cunningham Dance Ensemble for the dance by Merce Cunningham. It is one of the first new musical compositions commissioned by them since the death of John Cage in 1992 • Like all of Merce’s work, BIPED involved a collaboration with visual artists. In this case, Paul Keiser and Shelley Eshkar developed a very striking technique of video motion capture • On the visual side there is live dance and its digital “shadow” through the projected video animation. On the musical side there is digital replication, with the live instruments being reinforced by their electronic equivalents

CLASSICAL Goffredo PETRASSI Concerti for Orchestra Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra /Arturo Tamayo, conductor PETRASSI: Concerti for Orchestra Nos. 1– 8

Born in 1904, Goffredo Petrassi became one of the most important and influential Italian composers of the 20th century. He was chair of the department of composition at Rome’s St. Cecilia Conservatory for 20 years. His eight Concerti for Orchestra, composed over a period of almost 40 years, form the only group of pieces that completely reflect his artistic quest. They range widely in style, from a taste for neoclassicism to themeless structuralism; from Hindemith and Stravinsky to the search for “la nuova musica.” Spanish conductor Arturo Tamayo, a native of Madrid, was a student of Pierre Boulez and has made a specialty of conducting 20th-century composers, premiering works by John Cage, Iannis Xenakis, and many more.

Alessandro Stradella, born in 1639, had one of the most colorful biographies in music. His various romantic scandals and his death in a public street at the hands of assassins have overshadowed the fact that he was indeed a brilliant composer. The oratorio St. John the Baptist is generally considered his greatest work. It was written in 1675 for the Oratoria dei Fiorentini in Rome, which was under the patronage of Queen Christina of Sweden, who was living there after her conversion to Catholicism. Ildebrando Pizzetti (1880 –1968) was a composer whose operas avoid the lush lyricism of the Romantic Italian school in favor of a style reminiscent both of the Impressionists and of late Renaissance or early Baroque vocal music. Of his 15 mature operas, Fedra is one of the best and enjoyed considerable success at its premiere in 1915.

Premiered in Washington DC in 1986, and revised in 1991, Goya is one of the last operas by America’s best-known opera composer, Gian Carlo Menotti. Its libretto, written by the composer, is based on the life of the famous Spanish painter.

Antonio Valente flourished in the late 16th century but his exact dates are not known. His book of harpsichord music, Intavolatura di cimbalo, was published in 1576. The frontispiece tells us that the author was blind and was organist at the church of Sant’Angelo a Nilo. Other than that, we have little information about him beyond the music itself, which is highly representative of the early Neapolitan style just then emerging.

• The first reissue in 25 years from legendary folk rock funkateers Black Merda! • Too late for the Hendrix generation and too early for the Parliament/Funkadelic generation, this group defines the psychedelic folk-rock-funk of the ‘70s • With their folky, reportorial lyrics and acoustic guitar, Black Merda could be called acid funk unplugged. This is an excellent album that has been out of print since its Chess release in the 1970s

• Originally scheduled for release on the famed Chess label, this album was scrapped in the early ‘70s because it was deemed too trippy for Chess’ reputation • Muddy Waters and Donny Hathaway appear as session musicians on this psychedelic funk/soul offering • Fugi wrote the classic soul ballad “I’d Rather Be A Blind Man,” the original version of which appears here for the first time! BING CROSBY

One of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, Bing Crosby revolutionized the art of vocalization, creating a style so identifiable it is inexorably linked to his name: he was the original crooner. Through much of his career, which spanned fifty years, Bing Crosby was the most prominent singer in the world. For many, he is considered the finest vocalist of all time. Few will dispute his position as one of the greats in American musical history. For decades, his unique vocal style and savvy sense of showmanship mesmerized a generation of music fans, making of him the most popular entertainer in the nation. His permanent place in the fabric of American culture is secure.

The greatest influence in all of American popular music, Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong stands out not only as a master of the jazz trumpet but as a superlative vocalist whose unique phrasing made every song he sang his own. Beyond that, he was an ambassador of musical goodwill around the world for over fifty years, carrying with him wherever he went the exuberant spontaneity and joy that, for him, music always fostered. The ever-elegant Duke Ellington memorialized his friend, saying, “If anyone was Mister Jazz, it was Louis Armstrong. He was the epitome of jazz and always will be. He is what I call an American standard, an American original.”

Hank Williams is considered by many to be the father of contemporary country music. Within an amazingly short recording career (1947–1953), he had thirty-seven Top Ten hits. In less than four years, between March of 1949 and his death in 1953, his songs spent an astounding eighty-two weeks at Number One on the charts. At a time when Elvis Presley was a still just a schoolboy, Hank Williams was gyrating suggestively onstage, flashing flirtatious eyes at every woman in the room. His mercurial life could rival the works of William Shakespeare himself for sheer drama and complexity. His recordings remain, to this day, integral and pertinent examples of the craft.

For over half a century, George Jones has reigned as one of the most distinctive voices in all of country music. His pure country vocal style extends back to the very roots of the genre, and his influence over succeeding generations of country musicians is inestimably profound. George Jones represents the heart and soul of country music. Known to his fans as the “King of the Broken Hearts,” his songs are born out of hard-drinking honky-tonk nights and stormy back room romances. His songs reflect a life lived to its fullest, for better or worse. He is a legend and an icon, whose life is even more rugged than the hard-bitten context of his songs — which are some of the greatest in all of country music.
