months. Ukrainians from across the country, including a few from my village in the south-central region, were gathering in Kiev on Independence Square in an increasingly dangerous environment to fight for things that I had taken for granted my entire life.

Allegheny: A Peace Corps Leader

T

he Peace Corps in February released the 2014 rankings of the top volunteer-producing colleges and universities across the country. This year, Allegheny ranked No. 8 among small schools, with 14 alumni currently volunteering worldwide. The No. 8 position marks a significant increase in rank from 2013, when Allegheny held the No. 23 spot.

Allegheny alumni currently serving in the Peace Corps are working in Cambodia, Cameroon, Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, Peru, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia. They work in sectors including agriculture, education, English, health and youth development. Since the first days of the Peace Corps, 195 Allegheny alumni have traveled abroad to serve as volunteers.

“Allegheny College has great resources to help students prepare for life after college,” said alumna Alexia Kime ’11, who served in Senegal. “As a Peace Corps volunteer, I have a level of influence on a host community that no other person can have. I live, eat, talk, cry and laugh with my host family and friends, crossing cultural boundaries every day.”

Jim Fitch, associate director of career education at Allegheny, has served for the past nine years as the College’s lead liaison with the Peace Corps. “Peace Corps service awakens our alumni to new worlds and ways of being in the world, leading to amazing careers,” Fitch said. “Another Allegheny alumna, Sylvia Kauffman ’10, just completed her Peace Corps service in Peru and within the past week wrote to say that she has been offered acceptance to four medical schools.”

and I was not cold, but sweating under four wool blankets and holding a hot cup of tea. Though I also held a plate of cookies by this time, she rushed to the kitchen to warm up baked apples stuffed with sweet rice and raisins, all the while giving firm directions to her grandson to do I-had-no-idea-what. His assignment became clear when he returned 10 minutes later, panting from the bike ride, with the key to my house in his hands. When moments before I had been frustrated beyond belief, I was now reluctant to leave so soon.

This is one of countless acts of kindness extended to me by the people of Ukraine, and unparalleled hospitality is just one of the many exceptional attributes of Ukrainians. In just a short amount of time, I have seen the crucible of the EuroMaidan movement bring the best of virtues to the surface, both on an individual and national level. Since my departure, Crimea has been annexed by Russia, and military operations rock towns and villages in the east. Age-old tensions between east and west are being played out on an international stage.

A

s an Allegheny graduate, I am thankful that I was as prepared as I could have hoped to be for the Peace Corps and my work in Ukraine. Not only did I have a skill set and experiences that qualified me to do the work of a Youth Development volunteer, but perhaps more importantly, I learned how to say “yes” to things at Allegheny. I said “yes” to doing research in areas that I was not familiar with, I said “yes” to joining a club without knowing any of the members and I said “yes” to countless volunteer opportunities that challenged me in real ways.

As a Peace Corps volunteer, I said “yes” to being pushed well out of my comfort zone on a routine basis, and I came face to face with failure more than ever before in my life. However, I was also forgiven and daily encouraged by my Ukrainian friends and colleagues.

I am a witness to the Ukrainian revolution, as well as a sincere admirer of its people and the inner source of their power. It has been my privilege and honor to have dreamed Ukrainians’ dreams with them for a short time.

Maybe I even contributed, in the smallest of ways, to the realization of those dreams. = Lindsey DiLoreto has returned to her home in McKean, Pa. She is working as a fundraising coordinator for a new organization seeking nonprofit status.

When Erica Bryson ’15 arrived at Allegheny, she

knew she was interested in psychology, neuroscience and biology, but she wasn’t sure of her career path.

After attending an Experiential Learning Global Semina r in Nica rag ua, however — a nd a f ter a n hour-long meeting with Associate Professor Caryl Waggett, Ph.D.—things changed. Bryson immediately knew she had found a curriculum that fit her interest in public health.

T

hat program is Global Health Studies, which became a new major at Allegheny in fall 2013. Founded on the belief that undergraduate liberal education can play an essential role in meeting the world’s health challenges, Global Health Studies draws upon Allegheny’s longstanding commitments to civic engagement, diverse perspectives, internationalization and interdisciplinary learning.

The College is proud to be among a handful of liberal arts colleges in the nation to have this program.

the College has expanded its academic offersparked my interest in global health issues,” says Bryson, now a member of the first class of Global Health Studies majors.

“The more I learned about the field—how it encompasses not just health and lowresource issues abroad, but also concerns within the United States and our communities—I was hooked. I’ve definitely found my niche.”

Originally developed as a minor in fall 2012, the program expanded into a major after the College received a $1.5 million undergraduate science education grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in 2012. The grant allowed for the creation of two faculty positions, resources for faculty and curriculum development, collaborative research opportunities for students on and off campus and opportunities for students to engage in health-related studyaway experiences abroad and domestically.

“Global Health Studies really came about due to student interest; there already was a student-run global health club in place,” Provost and Dean of the College Linda C. DeMeritt, Ph.D., says. “Developing a program that capitalizes on areas where we are already doing well—such as our strong focus on the sciences, our promotion of student outreach to the community and our students’ willingness to serve—just made sense.”

The Global Health Studies program includes faculty from the departments of Political Science; Philosophy; Biochemistry; Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies; Communication Arts; Environmental Science; Biology; Neuroscience; Psychology and History. Interest has quickly spread. As of April, nearly 60 students were registered as Global Health Studies majors or minors.

“The growth and enthusiasm is truly phenomenal. The students’ ideas keep the faculty excited,” says Professor Waggett, chair of the program.

“What’s great is that the students can deepen their explorations and strengthen their career prospects through complementary majors or minors in other 6

ings in recent years to include programs aimed at preparing graduates for the changing dynamics of the community and the world. The newest programs include: Communit y Jus tice S tudies

I

n fall 1999, Allegheny launched a minor to engage students, faculty and community partners about the nature of citizenship, service-learning and democracy. Titled Values, Ethics and Social Action (VESA), this program allows students to understand social action and its ethics both intellectually and practically.

Since its inception, the minor, with roots in the Psychology, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Political Science and Economics departments, has grown to 27 students. Due to increased student interest—and since the program ties in with the global and local diversity component of the College’s strategic plan—the decision was made to change the program’s name to Community Justice Studies. Beginning in fall 2014, Allegheny will offer the program as a major, as well.

“In addition to classroom learning, Community Justice Studies students will participate in a semester or longer commitment to a leadership position in community-based research and learning,” DeMeritt says. “In a time of increasing social problems and scarce resources, this will allow students to supply much-needed ideas, skills and time to meet community challenges.

“Likewise,” she continues, “by working in partnership with local nonprofits, this program allows us to offer our students opportunities for learning about and contributing to our shared community in a way that is grounded in real problems, as well as being academically rich.”

Education S tudies

S

ince so many Allegheny graduates pursue a career in teaching, DeMeritt says the time was right to develop an Education Studies minor. Slated to begin in fall 2014, the minor is designed for students interested in education in a variety of ways—to prepare them for careers as educators, to provide them with insight into current issues in educational policy and to equip them for any number of fields that intersect with education, including workplace training, human resources or public policy.

Students choosing an Education Studies minor will combine it with a major of their choice. They then can earn a teacher certification and master’s degree in teaching through one of Allegheny’s partner institutions: Columbia University Teachers College in New York, Xavier University in Ohio or the University of Pittsburgh.

“Our graduates who have become teachers always have left with a strong core major that was centered around rigor. This minor allows us to expand upon that,” DeMeritt says.

Je wish S tudies

I

n fall 2013, the College implemented a Jewish Studies minor. The program allows students to gain an in-depth understanding of the experience and vital contributions of the Jewish people as an integral part of Western civilization and world history and of Judaism as the matrix of the West’s religious foundations and thought.

Examples of courses include “Jewish Theology and the Holocaust,” “The Jewish Bible: How the Rabbis Read It” and “Government and Politics of the Middle East,” among others.

“Creating this program ties into the strategic plan of further diversifying the campus and curriculum,” says Associate Professor Lauren French, Ph.D., chair of the Biology Department and one of the coordinators of the Jewish Studies program. “The courses for this minor range from Religious Studies

and Political Science to Economics and Environmental Science. Our goal is to allow students to explore this religion and its people both on campus and in the world.”

Journalism in the Public Interes t

T

he Journalism in the Public Interest minor, first offered in fall 2013, helps students forge a career path not only in the journalism profession, but also in the lifelong habit of navigating the news, as readers and watchers, in a nuanced, civically responsible way. Faculty from the English and Communications Arts departments, as well as from the College’s Center for Political Participation, teach the courses. As of April, eight students had declared Journalism in the Public Interest as their minor.

“There were a few reasons for developing this minor. One is that journalism has a historical connection to alumna Ida Tarbell, Class of 1880, a figure very important for Allegheny and for the history of journalism,” DeMeritt says.

“Another reason is because so many of our graduates have become journalists,” she says. “And when you see what is happening with journalism today—when journalists no longer have the time to dig into stories as Ida Tarbell did—we wanted a formal curriculum that teaches those values to a new generation. Investigative journalists also need strong critical-thinking, writing and speaking skills, which are already part of the Allegheny liberal arts education.”

Middle Ea s t and North African S tudies

A

llegheny developed a Middle East and North African (MENA) Studies program after receiving a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

MENA now includes a regional study area within the International Studies program, as well as a minor that, through the Political Science and Religious Studies departments, examines the history, politics, religion, culture and economics of the Middle East and North Africa. As of April, 11 students had declared MENA as their minor.

As interest in the unique program continued to grow, the College applied for and received another grant from the Mellon Foundation in 2012. With this support, Allegheny added a full-time professor of Arabic, further internationalized its curriculum and increased its study-abroad program sites.

“Providing consistent, high-quality Arabic language instruction is an essential contribution to developing students’ knowledge of the Middle East and North Africa,” DeMeritt says. “Moreover, language provides students with an important introduction to forms of Middle Eastern and North African culture.

We are grateful for the support from the Mellon Foundation that has allowed us to further diversify our curriculum in this area.”

Women’s, Gender and Sexualit y S tudies

I

n fall 2014, the Women’s Studies major and minor, and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Studies minor, will be replaced by an integrated Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies major and a minor.

Course work will focus on women, gender and sexuality through the frameworks of feminist and queer theories, methodologies and activism. The program will feature courses from the Art, Biology, Dance Studies, Communication Arts, Economics, English, Environmental Studies, History, Modern and Classical Languages, Philosophy and Religious Studies, Political Science and Psychology departments.

At present, 16 students are Women’s Studies majors, 28 are Women’s Studies minors and one is a LGBT Studies minor.

“This change grew out of a desire to shift the focus of the curriculum to address the substantial connections between Women’s Studies and the fields of Gender and Sexuality Studies,” DeMeritt says. “The program also responds to our strategic goals, better represents inclusive diversity and understanding cultural differences in academic curricula and emphasizes global and transnational approaches to the field.”

departments. They also are strongly encouraged to gain real-life global health experience via off-campus internships, study-away programs or collaborative research projects on campus.”

T

he program’s course work also focuses on prevention strategies such as literacy, education, gender equality and economic opportunity that lead to healthy communities. Students are prepared, Dr. Waggett says, for a variety of careers, including those in medicine, medical research, public health and policy, community-based health initiatives, regional planning, non-governmental organizations, foreign diplomacy, education and other fields that deal with health-related issues at the local and global levels.

Bryson, who also is pursuing a double minor in psychology and biology, also participated in a six-week summer internship in India as part of her Global Health Studies major requirements. After graduation, she is considering pursuing a master’s in a public health dual program with the Peace Corps.

“I am hopeful that this internship will help me determine how I will engage in global health issues to address disparities within and between countries,” she says. “I am so grateful for this experience to explore the world. And I am grateful to Allegheny for developing this new field of study.” = Allegheny Magazine

His company provides high-quality liquid pigment systems and other products to the coatings, composites, plastics and allied industries. It serves customers from two manufacturing facilities, one in Sandusky, and the other in Lebanon, Tenn.

Finding committed, long-term employees has produced challenges, and a need for change has blossomed into what appears to be the next revolutionary idea in corporate recruitment.

Year of Civil Rights

In April, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recognized Allegheny as a 2013-14 Individual Conference Champion of the College & University Green Power Challenge for using more green power than any other school in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Allegheny beat its conference rivals by using 15 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power, representing 100 percent of the College’s annual electricity usage. According to the EPA, Allegheny’s green power use of 15 million kWh is equivalent to avoiding the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the electricity use of more than 1,000 average American homes annually, or the CO2 emissions of more than 2,000 passenger vehicles per year.

An undergraduate conference titled “Democracy Realized? The Legacies of the Civil Rights Movement” was held at Allegheny in March. It featured keynote presentations by five nationally recognized scholars and activists, including civil rights icon, the Rev. James Lawson. The speakers reflected upon the rights of the disabled, of lesbian, gay and bisexuals, of women and of Native Americans and African-Americans, in the light of current events and recent decisions by the U.S. Supreme Court. The conference was part of Allegheny’s Year of Civil Rights. Among those who participated in a panel discussion of the Civil Rights Movement in 1962 were Rick Momeyer ’64, June Fair ’64, Peter Schwartz ’64 and Diane Duntley ’62.

Future Entrepreneurs

Match Play Alumnae from the Classes of 1994-2013 celebrated 20 years of lacrosse during an event in April at the College. The weekend included meals together, a campus tour and Allegheny’s conference game against Wittenberg University.

Telling the Story Award-winning journalists from across the country, including Richard Murphy ’71, one of three Pulitzer Prize winners, helped college students and community members document “The Story Next Door,” a two-day conference at Allegheny in March exploring community journalism in action.

The conference brought top professional journalists to present their work and mentor students during a weekend multimedia project. The storytelling component of the conference encouraged students from Allegheny and Ohio University to spread throughout Meadville to capture stories.

Students then presented the results of their work the following day. The conference also featured presentations from the awardwinning journalists and a panel discussion.

Forty-five Allegheny and Grove City College student entrepreneurs participated in a high-energy competition on campus in April by pitching their business ideas to a panel of judges during the Eighth Annual Gator Innovation Challenge.

The event, hosted by Entrepreneur-inResidence Chris Allison ’83, is designed to provide students the opportunity to present ideas to highly successful professionals in their fields.

The Faces of Scholarship Congratulations to Jared Balik ’16, who was named a Beckman Scholar. He worked this summer at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Crested Butte, Colo., with faculty mentor Scott Wissinger, professor of biology and environmental science, on the project “Effects of Species Replacement on Detrital Processing Rates in Montane and Sub-Alpine Ponds.” In addition, Erin Brown ’15 was selected for a 2014 Goldwater Scholarship, while Neal Shah ’15 was selected for an Honorable Mention. The Goldwater Scholarship is awarded to only 300 students annually, from an applicant pool of 1,200 to 1,500.

• Inducted in her first year of eligibility, 2004 graduate Kelley Anderson is arguably the most decorated women’s diver in program history. The 2004 Allegheny Female Athlete of the Year, Anderson earned six All-America honors during her career. She was the lone women’s diver in Allegheny history to be named the North Coast Athletic Conference’s Diver of the Year in each of her four seasons, as she won the conference championship in both the one- and threemeter dives each year from 2000 to 2004.

• More than a decade af ter graduating, Kevin Davidson’s name can still be found throughout the Allegheny baseball record book. A three-time All-North Coast Athletic Conference selection, the 2000 graduate was a four-year star ter at first base, and ranks second all-time in school histor y in both career doubles (40 ) and RBIs (155), third in career home runs (29) and fourth in career batting average (.399). In addition to his individual success, he was a key member of four of the top baseball teams in Allegheny program history, as the Gators went 140-40 over his four-year career, twice winning the NCAC championship and advancing to the 2000 Division III World Series.

• John Hreha graduated in 2003 as the m o s t p ro l i f i c d i ve r i n th e h i s to r y of th e North Coast Athletic Conference. The 2003 Allegheny Co-Athlete of the Year, he was the first diver, male or female, to win NCAC titles in both the one- and three-meter in all four years, and was a four-time NCAC Diver of the Year. He also enjoyed great success at the national level, earning All-America honors in all four years in both the one- and three-meter, highlighted by a trio of silver medal performances in the one-meter.

• Allison P yewell Nichols was a fouryear stalwart for the Gator women’s soccer team, graduating in 1999 among the top four in program history in both career goals (31) and points (73). The 1998 winner of the Allegheny Scholar-Athlete Award, and 1999 North Coast Athletic Conference ScholarAthlete Award winner, she was a four-time All-NCAC honoree, ending her career with three consecutive First Team nods. Nichols was a four-year letter winner and two-year team captain, helping the Gators to a 5226-3 record during her career. She led the Gators to a school-record 17-game winning streak (spanning 1996 and 1997), and a 21game home unbeaten streak that spanned the entire 1996 and 1997 campaigns.

received a $ 300,000 grant from an anonymous donor in suppor t of an initiative focused on improving community health in Allegheny’s hometown of Meadville. The grant will support initiatives related to food and nutrition and physical activity. The project is a collaborative venture with the Meadville Area Recreation Complex, Crawford Central School District, Meadville Medical Center, Craw ford County Commissioners and Craw ford County Career and Technical Center.

A second grant of $ 250,000 and a third of $ 200,000 will be awarded in 2015 and 2016, respectively, upon successful achievement of the previous year’s program goals. Kerstin Martin is the project director.

= Allegheny received a grant of $ 613,690 from the National Science Foundat ion ( NS F ) S-STEM program ( Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) to extend the impact of our successful 2009 S-STEM grant, which supported a program targeted at increasing the representation of students from under-represented groups in the sciences. The new project will provide opportunities for academically talented, financially needy students to earn degrees in any of our natural science departments and to enter the workforce in the science and technology fields. We will continue to make every effort to ensure that under-represented students are aware of this opportunity.

Dan Willey, professor of physics, and Ron Cole, professor of geology, are the project leaders. One hundred percent of the $ 613,690 cost of the project will be covered by federal funds through this NSF grant.

Bob Karl was inducted into the Kettering (Ohio) City School’s Chester A. Roush Educational Hall of Fame, the highest honor given to Kettering teachers for their contributions to their students, in May. He also coached track, cross-country and football and was given the Ed Barker Service Award by the Ohio Track Coaches Association in 2010.

After almost 20 years as a corporate attorney, he started Jim Cohen Metals in the late 1990s while working toward an MFA at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also presented a Torah breast plate he designed and fabricated to the Jewish Welfare Board on April 1 for use with a new Torah purchased for U.S. servicemen and women serving in war zones. He is president of the American Guild of Judaic Art and is an adjunct professor in metal arts at the University of New Mexico-Taos.

Barbara Baird is one of the attorneys for plaintif fs in the case of Baskin v. Bogan, which led to the first decision in Indiana requiring the state to recognize the out-ofstate marriage of a same-sex couple. Because one of the women is suffering from a terminal illness, the federal judge issued a preliminary injunction on May 8, 2014, requiring Indiana to recognize their marriage and in the event of death, list the survivor as “spouse” on the death certificate. Indiana’s Attorney General immediately appealed the decision and has stated his intent to vigorously defend Indiana’s law banning same-sex marriage. The case seeks to overturn the law as unconstitutional.

Carol Byrom Conrad retired in June after 41 years in education. She was an interdependent middle and upper school social studies teacher from sixth through 12th grades in North Carolina, Rhode Island and Maryland.

She also served as department chair at two schools, educational specialist at the National Archives and dean of faculty at Bullis School. Her husband, Dennis Conrad, will continue as an editor of documentary history at the Naval History and Heritage Command at the Navy Yard. They have two married sons and two grandchildren. At least annually they see Scott Knierim ’72 and Karen Heilman Knierim ’72 in Virginia.

Nancy Nelson Rudd and her husband, Jim, moved to Pawleys Island, S.C., last fall. In March, they opened the Accessory Cottage, located in the Hammock Shops village in Pawleys Island, selling unique, affordable fashion accessories and local art.

Fred Travis joined the Trulaske College of Business at the University of Missouri as director of the risk management and insurance program and assistant teaching professor of finance, after more than 30 years of risk management and corporate finance experience at major organizations. A l l e gh e n y bac k s t r ok e s p e c i a l i s t Joa n L a nge made big waves in 1976 when she became one of the first two women to win an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship —as a captain of the Gator men’s swim team, six years before the national association began sponsoring competition for women.

She and Southern Methodist University diver Christine Loock each received a $1,500 scholarship, joining 862 men who had been honored in the then 12-yearold program.

Joan put the funds to good use after Allegheny, graduating with honors from the Dartmouth School of Medicine in 1979, and she eventually became a prominent consultant to companies and international travelers on threats posed around the world by outbreaks of diseases.

But Joan made her first splash athletically, when she capped her freshman year with a sixth-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke at the Presidents’ Athletic Conference championships—making her the first woman to score at the meet.

A year later, Allegheny began sponsoring a women’s swim team, but Joan opted to continue competing with the men. Through her career, she collected 14 firstplace finishes in dual meets and placed in the PAC—the league in which the current North Coast Athletic Conference school competed at the time—all four seasons.

Alongside those athletics honors, she maintained a near-perfect grade-point average at Allegheny and was active in campus activities, including serving as Panhellenic vice president. Her classmates took notice, electing her homecoming queen. She was escorted at her coronation by teammate Marty Pfinsgraff ’77, a Division III allAmerican swimmer and her future husband.

For the past five years, she has served as an independent medical consultant, describing herself in a biography as interested in “bringing innovative therapies to patients who have serious health problems and few therapeutic options.” She previously was director of health intelligence for iJet, where she helped clients cope with such travel health risks as SARS, avian influenza and H1N1 pandemic influenza.

The Pfinsgraffs remain prominent at their alma mater, supporting participation by Allegheny students in science internships.

Joan Pfinsgraff also remains active athletically at age 60, participating in U.S. Masters Swimming as a member of the Terrapin Masters Club. She swept backstroke events for her age group in March at the Carol Chidester Memorial Swim Meet in Maryland and again in April at the Colonies Zone Championships in Virginia.

Today, 87 women annually receive NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships, along with 87 men. The program seeks to identify “individuals whose dedication and effort are reflective of those characteristics necessary to succeed and thrive through postgraduate study in an accredited graduate degree program.”

There isn’t much doubt—after a career in intercollegiate athletics that remains noteworthy four decades later, as well as academic success and professional achievement—that the first woman scholarship recipient in Division III lived up to expectations.

Professor of Communication Arts and Theatre Some will remember Dr. John Hanners as an educator at Allegheny. But in addition to making his mark academically, Hanners also was known as an author, historian, playwright, actor and horseman.

Hanners, professor and department chair of communication arts and theatre at Allegheny from 1979 to 1992, passed away May 18, 2014, at his home in Commerce, Texas. He was 68.

A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Hanners was a man of wide-ranging interests who found his calling as a teacher. After being honorably discharged from the service, he attended Eastern Illinois University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education with highest honor. He earned a master’s degree from Indiana State University. After working as a theater instructor and assistant varsity football coach at Griffith High School in Indiana, he enrolled at Michigan State University and earned his Ph.D. After Allegheny, he was named professor and head of the Department of Mass Media, Communication and Theater at what was then called East Texas State University in 1992. He retired in 2012 from the Texas A&M University–Commerce, where he was a professor emeritus.

Hanners is survived by his wife, Lou; a daughter, Lisa Hanners Cuppett; a son, Michael; a brother, David, and four grandchildren.

27, 2014. She had a degree in political science and histor y and an MBA from Mar ymount University. She dedicated her career in Washington, D.C., to representing the interests of 16 U.S. cities in seven states.

She was a city representative at the National Center for Municipal Development, served as a lobbyist for the National League of Cities and the U.S. Conference of Mayors and co-founded CapitalEdge (formerly known as Carolyn C. Nels Juleus

Professor Emeritus of Communication Arts Perhaps Nels Juleus’ obituar y says it best: “Nels was an expert educator, dynamic speaker, debate coach, actor, writer and painter. He had a spirit of inquiry that has inspired many, but he is best known for his love of humor.”

Juleus, 88, professor emeritus of communication arts, passed away April 12, 2014, at Rest Haven Nursing Home in York, Pa. A veteran of World War II, he had served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific. He then went on to earn his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. at Western Reserve University in Cleveland. Professor Juleus had taught at Allegheny from 1955 to 1992 and served as a department chair for many of those years.

One of four faculty icons honored in the spring 2002 Allegheny magazine, Professor Juleus was noted for many talents: as a teacher, as a scholar and author, as an actor, as a humorist and, perhaps most notably, for his gift of making each student he came across feel valued.

“Professor Nels Juleus never told you the answer or what to do,” said Steve Scott ’67 in the Allegheny article. “He guided. He made molehills out of mountains. He offered wisdom, as well as knowledge. He cared about you. He listened to your complaints, frets and problems. He never said whether you were right or wrong, but a smile was always there (or not there) to tell you whether he felt you were on target or way off.”

Another alumnus, James Fernandes ’69, remembered being invited to join Nels and Jackie Juleus on their front porch one day as James skateboarded by. “I felt so privileged, so special,” he said. “We talked about ideas big and small. It was the first of many such conversations.

This is what college was supposed to be like.”

Professor Juleus is survived by his wife, Jackie; two daughters, Kris and Jill; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and two sisters.

“He will be remembered by the countless students he taught—in the classroom, at the Grill and on his front porch—and by the colleagues who had the honor and the pleasure of working with him at Allegheny,” President James H. Mullen, Jr. says. “His legacy is a reminder to us all of the true value of the work being done on this campus every day.”

A musicologist, organist and harpsichordist, Robert’s bachelor’s degree (Phi Beta Kappa ) was from Colorado College, followed by a master’s degree in organ from the Juilliard School of Music and a Ph.D in musicology from Indiana University. A sea change in higher education leadership

P

resident James H. Mullen, Jr. in March was elected to a one-year term as chair of the board of directors of the American Council on Education (ACE), an organization that provides leadership on critical higher education issues. It is an honor for President Mullen to be elected to this key position by his peers. Allegheny magazine asked the president to share some thoughts about the post and his plans: What are the duties and responsibilities of the chair of the ACE board of directors?

ACE is the only organization that represents college and university presidents from all sectors of higher education. Its members include more than 1,600 institutions, public and private, two-year and four-year, as well a s 20 0 related a ssociation s.

ACE stands at the center of federal policy debates across the array of areas that impact higher education. As chair, I provide advice and counsel to the ACE president and Washington staff, and together with the board we help chart a course for ACE’s leadership and advocacy. I also consult with ACE leadership on the development of new initiatives in areas such as diversity, nontraditional learners and international education.

What goals have you set for your yearlong tenure as board chair?

This will be a key year at ACE. There are a number of immediate challenges, such as issues surrounding campus safety, college affordability, how to best serve the growing population of nontraditional learners and intercollegiate athletics. Congress is beginning its work to reauthorize the Higher Education Act, the key federal legislation that directs the bulk of the programs related to access and student choice.

My goal is to make sure the higher education community works constructively and collaboratively on these issues.

How does Allegheny College and its students benefit from your leadership role at ACE?

My role at ACE will bring me into contact with a number of key policymakers and opinion leaders nationally and make me a part of major conversations involving higher education. This

will call attention on the national stage to Allegheny’s fine traditions and programs. It’s also gratifying that I have the opportunity to serve as ACE chair during our Bicentennial.

What are the major issues that ACE is addressing this year?

As I mentioned, many important issues will be visited as part of the pending reauthorization of the Higher Education Act, such as securing adequate funding for Pell Grants and other federal student financial aid programs. We’ll also address on-campus diversity, campus safety issues, the higher education leadership pipeline, t he g rowing population of lifelong learners and innovative ways to boost the number of Americans with a college degree or credential. There is also a major project under way to examine the pluses and minuses of government regulation of higher education.

C a n A C E p l ay a r o l e i n h e l p i n g t o control the cost of a college education?

ACE has the unique ability to develop and disseminate best practices for how institutions can address issues related to college costs and budgets, such as through bulk purchases, energy savings and technology advances. ACE also works to enhance and expand the federal student aid programs that help to make college affordable for millions of Americans.

What changes do you see ahead for higher education across the nation?

It is indeed a fascinating time to be a leader in higher education, and the field is changing constantly. First of all, our student population will continue to diversify. A strength of American higher education is the variety of institutions it offers. Each college and university will need to focus on how best to bring its core mission and value to this generation of students. We’re also in the midst of a sea change in higher education leadership. College presidents are rapidly retiring and we will be focusing our efforts on building the next generation of leaders who are prepared to serve that ever-evolving student body and to provide the higher education so crucial to our nation and the world. =
