Reworking the progressive corporate campus: Suffolk down as Amazon HQ2 This studio consists in the development of two equally components: an architectural studio and an associated studio on the project site that deals with site impact of the building as well as explores the design opportunities for the larger context. We were supposed to address an architectural intervention and an urban/landscape issue based on a design manifesto.

The Main Issues to solve are: Solve sea level rise in the site and design the HQ2 for Amazon, Sea levels are projected to rise 1-2 feet by 2050 and 3-6 feet by 2100. Due to climate change, storm events are predicted to occur more frequently, there are three major options to consider, keep water out, adapt to live with water, or move to a higher ground. Amazon HQ2 will bring new improvements into the city of Boston, the building will offer, working space, commercial space, multipurpose areas for community and housing.

Concept: The Amazon box I choose the box as my concept because, it is the shipping container, is how they connect with customers, and is how they make money.

Diagrams: Several diagrams and mass models were used to develop the Concept. These are some ideas that I drew and model before getting into the final design.

SITE STRATEGY DIAGRAM

To solve the sea level rise on the site, it will have floodable areas below ground level where water will concentrate when the site is flooded. These flooded areas are public areas like a soccer field and public parks. To conduct water into the ponds they will be connected with flooding paths at ground level.

The buildings on the site will be elevated above ground level and they will be connected with elevated paths. Stairs and ramps will be located along the site so people can enjoy the different levels on the site and can escape in case of flooding. This diagram shows with blue arrows how the water runs from the elevated areas to the ponds. As well the connection between the up and low levels.

BOSTON RUNNING CENTER Fitness GYM 101 Massachusetts Avenue Boston MA

21

STUDIO IV - BAC ARC3309 - FALL 2018

The objective of Studio IV was to design a full architectural project. We were to design a fitness center taking in account building systems, building codes, sustainable strategies structure, as well an investigation of the site and the surrounding. Boston is a city where people of different ages and cultures run and exercise along the streets. Due to the highly traffic in this intersection this is a dangerous place for pedestrians and runners, my intent for 101 Mass Ave. is to create a safe space for runners. The structure will be a landmark for the running people of Boston. The building brings a new way to exercise, an outside running track that surrounds the structure, this will create a secure space for runners and it will be open to the public. The track will start at the entrance of the building and finish in a green roof where runners can appreciate the nice views to the west side of Boston. To continue the business trajectory of Newbury street the fitness center will feature retail spaces at the first floor and a juice bar and sports bar at the top. On the exterior of the building by Newbury street the fitness center will offer a bicycle parking garage for the building users. For pedestrian safety the building will have a space of 337sf of the building footprint, where they can wait before crossing the street.

HVAC Systems: Water chillers and distribution pumps are located at the basement of the building, this will facilitate the utility connections and noise isolation. The roof is the ideal location for cooling towers because of the fresh air intake and heat rejection to the atmosphere, cooling towers are noisy and produce very hot and humid exhaust air.
