filled with both immense joy and significant challenges However, when pregnancy, birth, or the postpartum period doesn’t go as expected, the emotional impact can be profound Many twin mums experience medical complications, emergency interventions, or NICU stays all of which can contribute to perinatal trauma
If your birth experience left you feeling distressed, you are not alone Processing your emotions is a crucial step toward healing, and support is available to help you find peace with your experience
Perinatal trauma refers to the emotional and psychological distress that can occur during pregnancy, birth, or the postpartum period. It can stem from:
A distressing or traumatic birth, such as an emergency C-section, excessive pain, or feeling powerless during labour
Severe pregnancy complications, like preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, or premature labour
NICU stays or medical concerns, which can impact early bonding and cause prolonged stress
Feeling unheard or dismissed, especially if your concerns were ignored or decisions were made without your input
Previous pregnancy or birth trauma, which may resurface with a new birth experience
Birth trauma isn't just about what happened it’s about how you felt If your experience left you feeling scared, powerless, or unheard, those emotions are valid and deserve care
Twin pregnancies often come with additional risks and medical interventions, making birth trauma more likely Many twin mums experience:
Higher rates of medical interventions, such as inductions or C-sections
Fear for their babies' safety, particularly if they were born prematurely or needed NICU care.
Physical exhaustion, making emotional processing even harder.
The pressure of caring for two newborns while recovering from trauma
Some common signs of trauma after birth may include: Flashbacks or nightmares – Reliving distressing moments from labour or delivery.
Anxiety or panic attacks – Feeling on edge, overwhelmed, or fearful.
Difficulty bonding with your babies – Emotional disconnection due to unresolved trauma.
Avoidance – Not wanting to talk about or revisit the birth experience.
Guilt or self-blame – Feeling like you failed, even when events were out of your control. If any of this resonates with you, know that your feelings are real, and healing is possible
Healing from birth trauma doesn’t mean forgetting it means processing your experience so that it no longer dominates your thoughts and emotions Here are some steps to help you on your healing journey:
1 Acknowledge Your Feelings
Grieving the birth you hoped for is natural Give yourself permission to feel sadness, anger, fear, or disappointment without judgment Journaling, talking with a trusted friend, or simply naming your emotions can help you start processing your experience
2. Talk About It
Sharing your story with someone who understands whether a birth trauma specialist, therapist, or a supportive friend can be incredibly validating You don’t have to carry this alone Many twin mums find comfort in connecting with others who have had similar experiences Support groups for birth trauma or twin parents can help you feel seen and understood
3. Practice Self-Compassion
It’s easy to blame yourself, but birth is unpredictable. Instead of self-criticism, try shifting your inner dialogue:
Instead of: “I failed my babies,” say: “I did everything I could to bring them safely into the world.”
Instead of: “I shouldn’t feel this way,” say: “My feelings are valid, and I deserve to process them.” Being kind to yourself is an essential part of healing.
4. Seek Professional Support
If your birth experience is affecting your daily life, professional help can make a significant difference. Trauma-informed therapies such as Human Givens therapy, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), or perinatal counselling can help you process what happened in a safe and supportive way Seeking help doesn’t mean your experience wasn’t real it means you are taking steps toward healing

5. Honour Your Experience
Finding ways to reclaim your birth story can be empowering. Some ways to do this include: Writing your birth story with a focus on moments of strength as well as challenges. Creating a memory book that acknowledges both the difficult and beautiful moments. Finding personal rituals that help you reflect and heal, such as lighting a candle or writing a letter to yourself.
6 Be Patient with Yourself
Healing takes time, and progress isn’t always linear Some days will be easier than others, and that’s okay Trust that, with the right support, you can find peace with your birth experience
Birth trauma can feel isolating, but many twin mums have walked this path and found healing Your feelings are valid, your experience matters, and support is available
If you are struggling, consider reaching out to a birth trauma specialist or a perinatal mental health professional You deserve support, and with time, you can reclaim your story and embrace twin motherhood with confidence and peace
You are not just a survivor of birth trauma you are a strong, resilient, and loving mother

When I found out I was expecting twins, I experienced a whirlwind of emotions, excitement, nervousness, and sheer awe Deep down, I always believed I would have twins. In fact, I told my husband on one of our first dates
My father was a twin, and when we lost him in January 2024, I was devastated The day after his funeral, I discovered I was pregnant, and two weeks later, I learned it was twins After enduring multiple miscarriages, I truly believe my father sent me these sweet angels as a gift from above
Now, seven months into this incredible journey, I can say with certainty that raising twins is both the hardest and most rewarding experience of my life Every day is a beautiful mix of cuddles, chaos, and constant learning
People often warn expectant parents about the sleepless nights, the endless diaper changes, and the double workload. However, what surprised me the most was how my heart expanded to love them both so deeply yet so uniquely.
I initially worried about how I would divide my attention, but I quickly learned that love isn’t divided, it multiplies Watching my twins grow, I’m amazed by their individuality. Despite sharing a birthday and environment, they each have their own personalities, preferences, and ways of interacting with the world One is a fearless explorer, while the other is more reserved and observant Parenting twins means continuously adapting, learning, and embracing their individuality while nurturing their inseparable bond
One of my most cherished memories so far is the first time my twins truly noticed each other I placed them side by side, and suddenly, they locked eyes They smiled, reached for one another’s faces, and giggled, it was as if they had just realized, Oh! You’re always here too! Now, they instinctively reach for each other, hold hands, and share the sweetest twin connection Watching their bond grow is something I will treasure forever.
First and foremost, take a deep breath You’ve got this Yes, it will be challenging Yes, you will be exhausted But the love you will experience is unlike anything else.
Here are a few lessons I’ve learned along the way:
Embrace the unpredictability. Nothing will go exactly as planned, and that’s okay
Say YES to help. Whether it’s your partner, family, or friends, if someone offers to bring a meal, hold a baby, or do a load of laundry, accept it!
Don’t stress about keeping everything equal
Some days, one baby will need more attention than the other, and that’s perfectly fine
Be kind to yourself. There will be tough days, and you might find yourself crying alongside your babies, but there will also be moments of pure joy that make every challenge worth it
The key to thriving as a twin mom is flexibility
Some days, you’ll feel like you have a routine down, and the next, everything changes That’s completely normal.
Rather than striving for perfection, focus on what works in the moment. I try to establish routines, but I also allow myself grace when things don’t go as planned Some days feel chaotic, and that’s okay. Leaning on my support system, my partner, family, friends, and fellow twin moms, has been invaluable in keeping me grounded.

I also make sure to carve out individual time with each twin, even if it’s just a few minutes of one-onone snuggles It helps them feel seen as individuals while strengthening our bond in unique ways
And of course, self-care is non-negotiable. It’s easy to get lost in the demands of twin life, but you can’t pour from an empty cup. Whether it’s a short walk, a solo coffee run, or five minutes of deep breathing, find small ways to recharge.
One of the best resources I’ve found is connecting with other twin moms, whether online or in person Having a community that gets it is invaluable. On a practical level, these have been lifesavers for me: Syncing naps and feedings as much as possible for a predictable rhythm
A great double stroller for easier outings
A Twin Z Pillow for comfortable feeding and lounging
Baby Bjorn bouncers (or similar) to help soothe both babies simultaneously
At just seven months old, my twins have already taught me more about love, patience, and resilience than I ever imagined. This journey comes with its challenges, but every smile, cuddle, and milestone makes it all worthwhile
To all the twin moms out there, whether you’re expecting or deep in the trenches, you are not alone, and you are doing an incredible job.

Recent research has revealed that mothers of twins face a higher risk of heart problems in the year following birth compared to mothers of singletons
These risks include heart disease, heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and irregular heart rhythm The likelihood of hospitalization for heart-related issues is significantly increased, particularly for mothers who experienced high blood pressure during pregnancy This increased risk stems from the heightened cardiovascular demands of carrying twins, requiring the heart to pump a larger volume of blood. While the maternal heart gradually returns to its pre-pregnancy state, the recovery period can take several weeks.
A recent study provides the following statistics on hospitalization for heart problems within a year of giving birth:
Mothers without high blood pressure during pregnancy:
734 per 100,000 mothers of singletons
1,105 per 100,000 mothers of twins
Mothers with high blood pressure during pregnancy:
5,890 per 100,000 mothers of singletons
8,210 per 100,000 mothers of twins
Sign up for our public newsletter: www icombo org/mailing-list
While these numbers highlight an increased risk, it's important to note that serious heart complications remain rare, with less than 1% of even high-risk mothers requiring hospitalization Interestingly, one year after birth, mortality rates from all causes including heart disease were actually lower among twin mothers with high blood pressure compared to singleton mothers with similar conditions This suggests potential protective factors unique to twin pregnancies.
Given the increased risks, it is crucial for mothers of twins to monitor their heart health and seek medical attention if they experience symptoms such as severe shortness of breath, dizziness, or chest pain Healthcare providers should also continue monitoring twin mothers for up to a year postpartum, especially those with pregnancy complications like preeclampsia or gestational hypertension
To support heart recovery and maintain long-term cardiovascular health, consider the following:
1. Schedule Regular Medical Check-ups
Inform your doctor about any pregnancy complications, such as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, or high blood pressure Regular follow-ups can help detect early warning signs of heart issues.
2. Monitor Your Blood Pressure
Use a home blood pressure monitor or request frequent checks during medical visits Early detection of hypertension can prevent complications
3 Eat a Balanced, Nutritious Diet
Focus on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins If you're breastfeeding, ensure you're consuming enough calories and nutrients. When in doubt, consult a dietitian
4. Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water to support healthy blood circulation and maintain overall well-being
5. Engage in Gentle Physical Activity
Light exercises such as walking or swimming can aid recovery and improve heart health. Always consult your doctor before starting any strenuous exercise, especially if you had pregnancy complications.
6. Manage Stress and Prioritize Rest
Try relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation, or spending time in nature Rest when possible although challenging with twins, sleep and relaxation are essential for heart recovery.
The Takeaway Twin pregnancy places increased strain on the heart, making postpartum care and long-term heart health a priority. While the risks are higher than for singleton pregnancies, they remain manageable with proactive monitoring, healthy lifestyle choices, and regular medical follow-ups By taking these steps, twin moms can support their recovery and maintain a strong, healthy heart for years to come

Having twins is an extraordinary experience
One filled with joy, surprises, and unique challenges No matter how much you prepare, raising two babies at the same time can still take you by surprise. If you're expecting twins or just curious, here are the top 10 things I wish I had known before my twins were born.
The Dream vs. The Reality
In October 2017, my dream of motherhood became a reality I gave birth to a beautiful boy and girl on the same day, the perfect duo I had always wanted Leading up to their arrival, my pregnancy was smooth until the final stretch when my son’s placenta began to fail. This led to their birth at 36 weeks, considered almost full-term for twins, and I was thrilled! Before they arrived, I pictured a serene newborn stage: cuddling them, nursing them effortlessly, and enjoying the early days of motherhood The nursery was ready, my hospital bag was packed, and I felt prepared. Then reality set in Raising twins was the hardest thing I had ever done The exhaustion was unimaginable, and I often felt like I was drowning But as all seasoned twin parents say, it gets better. And I can confirm, it truly does.
1 The First Few Months Are More Exhausting Than You Can Imagine
Sleep deprivation takes on a whole new meaning with twins Feedings, pumping, bottle warming, diaper blowouts, it all happens at twice the speed and intensity If possible, plan a nighttime schedule before birth A great strategy is taking shifts with your partner or support person:
Mom handles the 7 PM feed and bedtime routine, then sleeps.
Dad/helper does the 10 PM shift
Mom wakes for the 1 AM shift.
Dad takes over at 4 AM.
Mom starts the day at 7 AM.
This way, everyone gets at least some uninterrupted rest
2. Getting Out of the House Will Feel Like a Military Operation
Dressing two babies, packing bags, and just getting out the door will take way longer than you expect You’ll likely become a homebody for the first few months, only venturing out for doctor’s appointments and essentials A few tips:
Lower your expectations - You probably won’t be on time, and that’s okay
Prepare the night before - Pack the diaper bag, bottles, and anything else you’ll need
Give yourself grace - you’re keeping two tiny humans alive, and that’s enough.
3. You DON’T Need Two of Everything (But Some Things Are Essential)
While twins mean double the love, it doesn’t always mean double the gear. Here’s what you can share and what’s best to have in duplicates: ✔ Can Share: Clothes, swaddles, bibs, blankets, and even a crib in the early days ✔ Must Have Two: Swings/bouncers (you need a safe place to put both babies down!) ✔ Invest in One Great Double Stroller: The Zoe Twin V2 is a game-changer, lightweight, travel-friendly, and long-lasting. (Check out my exclusive link: Zoe Stroller)
4. Your Relationship with Your Partner Will Change Raising twins requires teamwork like never before Sleep deprivation, stress, and constant baby care can strain even the strongest relationships My best advice:
Communicate openly about responsibilities, frustrations, and needs
Don’t make major relationship decisions in the first year (except in cases of abuse) The early months are the hardest, but it gets easier with time.
Remember why you fell in love, this season is temporary, and you will find your way back to each other

5. Postpartum Depression is More Common in Twin Moms
Twin pregnancies cause greater hormonal shifts, making postpartum depression (PPD) more likely Combined with extreme sleep deprivation, twin moms are especially vulnerable. Know the signs: ❌ Persistent sadness, crying, or mood swings ❌ Difficulty bonding with your babies ❌ Intrusive thoughts or overwhelming anxiety ❌ Feeling hopeless or withdrawing from loved ones If you’re struggling, reach out to your doctor immediately.
6. Multitasking Becomes a Survival Skill
Caring for two newborns means learning to do everything at once Tips to stay sane: Write things down. Track feedings, diaper changes, medications, and schedules Use phone reminders to stay on top of tasks. Find efficiencies, nurse both babies at once, prep bottles in advance, and keep essentials within reach
7. Asking for Help is NOT a Weakness
Parenting twins is overwhelming. If someone offers help, always say yes Whether it’s family, friends, or hired support, having extra hands makes a world of difference
8. Bonding with Each Baby Takes Time, and That’s Okay
Twin parents often worry about bonding. In the beginning, you’re in survival mode, simply meeting basic needs Don’t stress, love grows, and your connection with each child will deepen over time.
9. Your Support System is Everything
No one should go through twin parenting alone Find a tribe of twin parents who understand the journey That’s why I created Twinsanity Life, a community where twin moms can connect, share, and support one another. Join our Twin Mom Facebook Group: Twinsanity Life
10. Adjust Your Expectations & Embrace the Chaos
Before twins, you might have a vision of what parenthood will look like. Throw that out the window. Some days will be picture-perfect; others will be pure survival Flexibility is key
Take lots of photos - these early days fly by faster than you think! Backup your memories - you’ll want to cherish these moments forever. Most of all, remember: you’ve got this

Recovering from birth while caring for two newborns is no small task.
Whether you had a vaginal birth or a C-section, your body and mind need time to heal. The postpartum period can feel overwhelming, especially with the demands of twin motherhood
However, by prioritizing self-care and seeking support, you can navigate this time with more confidence and ease.
Physical Recovery: Supporting Your Body After Birth
Your body has been through an incredible transformation. Healing takes time, and listening to your body is essential
1. Prioritize Rest
Sleep deprivation is unavoidable with newborn twins, but rest is still vital for recovery While long stretches of sleep may not be possible, try these strategies: Nap when you can – Even short naps can help. If both babies nap at the same time, take advantage of the opportunity to rest.
Accept help – If a partner, friend, or family member offers to care for the babies while you sleep, say yes
Create a shift system – If you have a partner, consider taking turns for night feeds to ensure you both get some sleep.
2. C-Section Recovery Tips
If you had a cesarean section, your body needs extra time to heal. To aid your recovery:
Follow your doctor’s and midwife’s advice on wound care to prevent infections
Avoid heavy lifting (including older children) and listen to your body when moving
Hold a pillow against your incision when coughing, sneezing, or laughing to reduce discomfort.
Accept help with tasks like cooking and cleaning, your priority is healing

Postpartum life can feel isolating, especially with twins Connecting with others who understand your experience can be a lifeline.
3. Pelvic Floor and Abdominal Support
Regardless of your birth type, your pelvic floor and core muscles need time to regain strength It’s recommended to:
Practice pelvic floor exercises – These exercises can improve bladder control and core stability. A pelvic health physiotherapist can provide guidance.
Support your abdomen – If you had a C-section, using your hands or a small pillow to support your incision when moving can reduce discomfort Gentle abdominal exercises can be started with advice from your healthcare provider Healing is different for everyone, some mums recover quickly, while others take longer. Be patient with your body.
Emotional Recovery: Nurturing Your Mental Well-Being
Caring for twins while adjusting to life as a new parent can be emotionally intense It's normal to feel a mix of joy, exhaustion, and overwhelm
1 Be Aware of Mood Changes
Hormonal shifts after birth can bring emotional ups and downs Feeling weepy, overwhelmed, or irritable is common in the early days. However, if you experience: Persistent sadness or hopelessness
Intense anxiety or panic attacks
Difficulty bonding with your babies
These may be signs of postpartum depression (PPD), postpartum anxiety (PPA), or even PTSD,
which is more common in parents of multiples If these feelings persist, reach out for help, you are not alone, and support is available
2. Lower Your Expectations
Caring for twins is demanding, and it’s easy to feel pressured to “do it all.” In reality:
It’s okay if your home isn’t spotless.
It’s okay if you don’t cook elaborate meals
It’s okay to focus on feeding, cuddling, and resting, everything else can wait
Let go of perfection and prioritize what truly matters: your wellbeing and your babies
3. Stay Connected
Postpartum life can feel isolating, especially with twins. Connecting with others who understand your experience can be a lifeline.
Consider:
Joining a twin parent support group, either in person or online
Talking to other moms who’ve had similar experiences
Sharing your feelings with a trusted friend, partner, or therapist
Having a support system can make a world of difference.
Asking for Help: You Don’t Have to Do This Alone
Accepting help doesn’t mean you’re failing, it means you’re making sure you have the support you need
1 Accept Support
If family or friends offer to help, say yes! Consider asking for:
Help with meal preparation
Assistance with household tasks
Someone to watch the babies while you shower or nap
People often want to help but don’t know how, don’t hesitate to be specific about what you need
2 Consider Hiring Support
If possible, professional postpartum support can be incredibly beneficial:
A postpartum doula can provide hands-on newborn care, emotional support, and guidance.
A lactation consultant can assist with breastfeeding, which can be especially helpful with twins.
A therapist or counselor can help if you’re struggling emotionally.
There is no shame in needing help, it takes a village to raise children, and that is even more true with twins.
Practical Twin Parenting Tips for the Early Days
Caring for two newborns at once can feel overwhelming

Here are some simple strategies to help manage daily life:
Feed both babies at the same time if possible (whether breastfeeding or bottle-feeding) This can save time and allow you to rest between feeds
Use a twin feeding pillow for support
Set up diaper-changing stations in different areas of your home to make changes easier
Wear one baby in a carrier while tending to the other if both need comforting at once
Keep a log (or use an app) to track feedings and sleep, especially in the early weeks when exhaustion makes it hard to remember details
Finding a routine that works for your family will take time, be flexible and gentle with yourself
Be Kind to Yourself
The postpartum period is a time of healing, adjustment, and learning. It's okay to have hard days It's okay to feel exhausted And it's okay to ask for help
What matters most is your well-being and your babies’ well-being Take it one day at a time, and remember, you are doing an amazing job.

Becoming a twin mama has been the wildest, most beautiful ride of my life From double the giggles to double the chaos, each day is an adventure, and I wouldn't trade it for the world
My twin girls are now almost 11 months old, and while I’m still figuring things out one wake window at a time, I’ve learned so much along the way. I hope sharing my journey inspires or reassures another twin mama that she’s not alone in this incredible experience
One of the most surprising lessons has been recognizing the importance of treating my twins as individuals Even though they are identical, they have completely different personalities, preferences, and needs It’s easy to refer to them as “the twins,” but I make a conscious effort to celebrate their differences and ensure they each get one-on-one time to shine Watching them grow into their own little selves has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey
One of my favorite moments was the first time they truly noticed each other. They were lying on their play mat when one reached out and grabbed the other's hand. It was such a simple, fleeting moment, yet it made my heart burst
Seeing them bond, interact, and even comfort each other during tough times is something so special, it's a connection like no other
If I could share one piece of advice with expecting twin moms, it would be this: embrace the chaos, especially in those first few months Let go of how things "should" look and focus on what actually works for you and your family Once the initial whirlwind settles, creating a routine (especially a consistent bedtime!) makes a world of difference And don’t hesitate to ask for help One of the best decisions I made was hiring a cleaner for just a couple of hours in the evening. Having someone else take care of the kitchen, main floor, and endless bottles gives me time to breathe and focus on my babies
Balancing the needs of two babies at once can be overwhelming. There are moments when it feels impossible to meet both of their needs simultaneously
One thing that has truly helped me is strategic preparation, keeping extra diapers and wipes in every room, setting up safe spaces to place one baby down while tending to the other, and streamlining our daily routines to minimize stress On the hardest days, I remind myself: this stage won’t last forever It gets easier. The sleepless nights eventually pass, and before you know it, you’ll find your rhythm
Investing in game-changing essentials has made all the difference. A high-quality double stroller, a reliable bottle sterilizer, and a supportive baby carrier have been lifesavers for us. And something as simple as stepping outside, even for just a 10-minute walk works wonders for resetting our day Fresh air has been a mood booster for both the babies and me! This journey has been a rollercoaster of exhaustion, endless cuddles, and a love deeper than I ever imagined If you're a twin mama or about to become one, just know this: you've got this, even on the days when it feels like you don’t.

Parenting multiples is a balancing act. Yes, there are plenty of joys But families with twins or more also face sleep deprivation, potential challenges with feeding, and greater expenses in prenatal, delivery, and postpartum care and that’s just in the first few months!
The impact on our mental health is not just a guess based on observation Statistics tell the same story.
Parents of multiples are nine times more likely to experience disabling exhaustion, according to PerCapita research from Australia
84% of multiple-birth families have one or more parent facing emotional or psychological challenges in the first year after birth, according to a study by UK-based Twins Trust.
Mothers of multiple births had 43% greater odds of having moderate-to-severe postpartum depression, compared with mothers of singletons, and 1 in 10 fathers of multiples experience post-natal depression
That’s why this April Multiples of America is using the platform of Multiple Birth Awareness month to call attention to the problems families with multiples face in maintaining good mental health We’re planning activities, events, stories, and social media posts around the theme It’s a Balancing Act: Mental Wellbeing for Parents of Multiples
"As a parent quickly discovers, raising twins is a very difficult, complicated, and emotionally and physically consuming process,” explains Margot Lewis, an affiliate member of Multiples of America and founder of Twinsight Therapy. “Research has shown that multiple parents are less likely to seek psychological support, but those who do or who find a multiple parent community will find relief and recover faster from mental health issues ”
As Margot shares, researchers assert parents of multiples increase their mental wellbeing by forging bonds with other parents.

Joining a local parents of multiples club provides priceless in-person connections with others who experience those same unique challenges in navigating the day-to-day issues that arise while raising twins, triplets, or more. If there’s no local club nearby, connecting with Multiples of America as an affiliate member also offers opportunities to connect virtually with learning, support and online events and workshops As affiliate members, parents of multiples can bond with parents across the country through an individualized match program and at an annual convention
In fact, Smadar Zmirin, an affiliate member of Multiples of America and owner of Twinful Life, offered some tips to ease parents into the daily challenges of raising multiples during a recent online seminar She suggested setting a list of three small priorities daily and allowing time for “peace and joy breaks.” Smadar also shared the four ingredients of what she considers her “magic formula” for early parenting, which includes relying on a “village of support.”
“Sometimes, just knowing you are not alone is enough," affirmed Margot.
