A warm welcome to prospective students and their parents to our Sixth Form Prospectus.

This will provide an opportunity to start reflecting on the opportunities post GCSE that All Hallows can offer.

The aim is to help students make informed choices and find out about what they can both give and receive from life and study in our ‘Outstanding’ Sixth Form.

There is something for everyone since we offer both A Level and Technical Vocational courses. All students are able to benefit from a mature learning environment combined with the familiar strong pastoral care and community life of All Hallows College.

There is a real buzz about life in our Sixth Form. This comes from a sense of pride in academic achievement, personal development and social enterprise for the good of others.

Welcome...

I am delighted that you are considering studying at All Hallows Sixth Form. Our aim is to provide for the educational needs of all our students in a Catholic environment; we are committed to a community based on mutual respect where we recognise our responsibilities to ourselves and others.

At All Hallows we want our students to complete their courses successfully whilst at the same time developing into intelligent, independent and confident young people with wide-ranging interests and high aspirations. Our excellent teaching enables students to achieve academic success, and the individual pastoral support and guidance we provide encourages them to develop personally, socially and spiritually.

All Hallows Sixth Form provides a variety of opportunities for post 16 studies.

ADVANCED COURSES Advanced courses, including A levels and BTEC’s (Level 3), are the main routes into higher education, higher apprenticeships and employment. These are full-time two-year courses. Entry requirements for Advanced level study are a minimum of five GCSE’s A* - including grade 5 English & Maths.

Students will choose three subjects to study from the A level courses on offer or a combination of A level courses and Level 3 Vocational qualifications. Subjects are examined at the end of 2 years of study.

Level 2 Courses Students who have not achieved a grade 5 in English or Maths have the opportunity to repeat these.

Macclesfield Football Academy September 2015 saw the launch of our Football Academy, providing an opportunity for students to combine their academic programme of studies with training as part of the Macclesfield Football Academy.

As a Catholic College, we continue to build upon the spiritual experiences of the students, not only in offering them a deeper insight into their own faith but also by encouraging them to take a greater role in the community. We believe our sense of values help the students to put into perspective the increasing pressures that society puts upon them. With this in mind, all Sixth Form students follow a programme of General R.E. Year 13 able students may choose to engage in the EPQ. The results provide many students with the additional UCAS points needed to secure a place at university and enable them to demonstrate independent study skills.

Animal Management - BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate Overview

Animal Management at All Hallows offers students an opportunity to learn through practice. The course covers a wide range of the animal care industry and looks into the theory behind animal care as well as learning the essential hands on skills required to work with animals.

Students will study units which link to all aspects of Animal Management including promoting Animal Health, Animal Handling, Animal behaviour and Communication and Exotic Animal Health.

Students will learn through a variety of opportunities inside and outside the classroom including visits to animal collections, shows and conservation sites. Students are encouraged to put their learning into practice and gain additional experience with the animals outside of lessons

Entry Requirements 5 GCSE’s A* - C or equivalent including English Language grade 4.

If your aim is to work in the animal industry or areas of Biology this course provides a perfect route to either a degree course, an apprenticeships or directly into work.

Art, Craft and Design (Textiles) A Level Overview

The course commences with a focus on basic skills and techniques and quickly builds to encompass a mixed media approach. Students work mainly in sketchbooks and develop work in a variety of Textile and Three dimensional materials for the portfolio of evidence.

Following the Art, Craft & Design course allows students to produce work and final outcomes in a variety of materials and forms including Textiles, Printing and dyeing, Sculpture and Three Dimensional Design. There are a series of lesson based workshops in which students learn a range of new skills.

Students are encouraged to develop an individual and personalised approach to their studies.

Progress is monitored and supported through regular tutorials.

Students and staff agree challenging targets and areas for development.

Students are encouraged to visit appropriate exhibitions to supplement their studies and the department provides a range of off site learning opportunities including gallery visits (London, Tate Modern) and Museums (V&A, British Museum).

Fine Art A Level Overview

Biology A Level Overview

Biology A level, expands the concepts introduced to pupils at GCSE, whilst adding a range of fascinating new ones. Biology is one of the most multifaceted academic subjects, covering topics from the molecules which make up our bodies to the future of our entire planet. Discoveries in Biology have, and continue to give rise to innovations which protect, preserve and enhance plant, animal and human life.

Whilst Biology is a challenging discipline, our department has a high retention rate at A level, and a high success rate in terms of grades and destinations; with many students taking Biology related subjects in Higher Education such as Ecology, Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, Physiotherapy, Radiography, Zoology and others.

Business - BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate & Diploma Overview

The Extended Certificate and Diploma are high quality, industry-recognised qualifications geared to the specific requirements of the Business Sector. At Level 3 they have been accredited by QCA to be equivalent to A Levels. It is delivered as a two year programme, to provide a qualification at Pass, Merit or Distinction. The Diploma is equivalent to 2 A Levels and The Extended Certificate is equivalent to 1 A Level.

Chemistry A Level Overview

A level Chemistry is a rigorous, challenging and ultimately rewarding course that develops students' scientific skills and knowledge. The course has been split into three sections; physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry and organic chemistry. Each section begins with an overview, which puts the topic into a broader chemical context and encourages understanding of the place of each topic within the subject.

The course aims to: 

Criminology - BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate Overview Overview

Crime is increasing. Crime rates, however, are falling. How can we explain such a phenomena?

Criminology looks to answer these discrepancies within society. Through your study of Criminology you will explore different types of crime, reasons why people commit crime, what we do with offenders and different theories of rehabilitation.

Your work will be assessed by controlled assessment (50%) and examination (50%).

Criminology can lead to a variety of careers within the criminal justice system and beyond. There are jobs in the Probation Service, Police and Forensic Psychology to name a few

Art and Design—3D Design Overview

This 3D Design course provides students with a wide range of creative, exciting and stimulating opportunities to explore their interests in ways that are both personally relevant and developmental in nature. This enables students to develop their ability to actively engage in the design process; to build creative skills through learning and doing, to develop imaginative ways of working and develop knowledge and understanding of media, materials and new technologies.

Students complete 2 units; 1 of which is a portfolio of work where students design and make one or more outcomes and complete a 3000 word assignment; and unit 2 which is externally set by the exam board.

The portfolio of work will explore a number of different 3D outcomes including product design; interior or architectural design; or design for theatre/film/tv.

The externally set unit will also allow an independent and personal response across one of these subject areas as chosen by the student.

Drawing will take many forms from quick sketches to more formal technical drawings and exploded diagrams.

Modelling will use a range of materials and techniques and also include Computer Aided Modelling. Final outcomes and products will be made using traditional and modern technologies as the department is fully equipped with CAD/CAM facilities including 3D printing and laser-cutting.

Entry Requirements 5 GCSE's A* - C Including English Language grade 4 and D&T Product Design .

B grade in D&T is preferable. Students with a grade C will be considered.

Dance A Level Overview

The Dance course allows students to develop their skills, technique and choreographic ability through a range of units; both theoretical and practical.

Throughout the course students will work both independently and as part of a small dance company to choreograph and perform dances, building on your physical and expressive dance skills, and ability to compose dances in response to a stimulus.

Theoretically, students are expected to progress in their ability to appreciate and understand a range of set works, expanding on their written articulation of ideas. Furthermore, students will cover safe dance practice units, such as healthy diet, anatomy and physiology and injury prevention.

The dance course is very demanding, both physically and intellectually, and there is an expectation for students to challenge their creativity. Students are required to engage with theatre visits and performances to build on their learning experiences.

Students are encouraged to audition for All Hallows’ in-house dance company, Inspire.

Dance is a creative and expressive subject to study.

Economics A Level Overview

This A Level introduces students to economics through building knowledge of core microeconomic, macroeconomic and business concepts. Students then apply this knowledge to business contexts in the assessments at the end of each year.

Students study 4 themes over a two year programme of study: Theme 1: Markets, Consumers and Firms

There is no coursework in this A Level. It is 100% examination assessed at the end of Year 13.

English Language A Level Overview

We begin the course by teaching the core linguistic terms students need before beginning to look at other more specific topics. The aim is to bridge the gap from GCSE study and move students towards a more technical approach to studying language.

During the first year the topics explored include how language varies according to gender, the social groups people are part of and their occupation. We also study the differences in accent and dialect across the British Isles. The second year modules include child language acquisition and the evolution of English into a global language.

There are opportunities for students to analyse a wide range of texts, including literary and multi-media texts such as chat room conversations. Students are expected to collect their own data for analysis, transcribe conversations, work together and deliver presentations, giving them the skills they will need at higher education.

Entry Requirements 5 GCSEs A*-C Including grade 5 in English Language.

In addition to analysing the language of others there is also a creative writing element to the course where students work on developing their own skills as writers in a number of genres and styles. Students are encouraged to read widely to develop their appreciation of different writers’ techniques.

This popular course is highly successful at All Hallows.

Students finish with skills and experiences that are beneficial in many career paths including teaching, law, tourism, journalism and media.

English Literature A Level Overview

This course is designed for those who already have an interest in Literature and who wish to develop their basic knowledge and understanding by studying a wide range of literary material. Reading is clearly a very important part of any Literature course, so anyone who chooses this subject must already enjoy reading and have a genuine desire to learn more about books and writers.

The A level course in Literature focuses on two main themes: ‘Love through the Ages’ and ‘Texts in Context from 1945 to the present day’.

Students study all forms of Literature (novels, plays, poems and short stories) drawn from across the whole history of Literature (1500s to the present day). We explore ideas and develop our own personal responses to what we read, as well as considering the range of methods authors use to convey their thoughts. Students will be introduced to some of the literary ‘greats’ such as Shakespeare and Emily Bronte as well as studying modern authors such as Arthur Miller and Carol Ann Duffy. One of the aims of the course is to set literary works in their social and historical context, so we also explore the historical background and look at how ideas about topics such as gender and class have influenced the presentation of ideas across time. As such, this A level is a good complement to other courses such as History and Sociology. Across the two years, students study 6 main texts for examination in Y13. In Year 13 students also take on the challenge of an extended essay for coursework in which they compare two major texts of their own choosing.

This popular course has proved to be highly successful at All Hallows.

Journalists, politicians, lawyers, actors, educationalists, those working in the media and communications industries plus many others, have all benefited from a grounding in English Literature.

Health & Social Care - BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate Overview

The health and social care sector employs some of the most talented and clever people the country have to offer. The NHS, as the main employer, has a continual need for doctors, nurses, ambulance staff and support staff, and there are further opportunities to work for the NHS in social care in hospitals, educational settings and residential homes.

A BTEC in Health and Social Care offers a practical and relevant start to any young person interested in a career in the caring professions.

This qualification can lead to a wide variety of career areas, including Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Chiropody, Social and Community work, Care Homes, Teaching, Midwifery and Counselling.

Entry Requirements 5 GCSE’s A* - C including English Language grade 4.

History A Level Overview

A level History follows the AQA specification. Both the Unit 1 breadth study and Unit 2 depth study will be covered across year 12 and 13. The breadth study students cover the USA between 1865 and 1975 and explain how the USA became a superpower.

The Depth study students cover Post War Britain from 1951 to 2007 which explains the making of modern Britain. This option provides the opportunity to study a period of major change in depth, focusing on key ideas, events and developments. In the final term of year 12 students complete their coursework on Irish Nationalism during the Nineteenth Century analysing the key events of the era such as the Famine, Home Rule Bills and the Easter Rising and evaluate their impact on Anglo-Irish relations.

Apart from being very interesting, the study of History is also very useful. You will be able to understand what motivates people, what makes them act in the way that they do and gain a thorough understanding of the world around you.

You will be able to gather information, interpret and analyse it.

ICT - BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate Overview

The course aims to develop a broad range of ICT skills as well as knowledge of the uses of ICT in vocational contexts.

Develop knowledge and understanding of the components, functions and applications of ICT systems within a wide range of organisations.

Develop an understanding of the main principles of solving problems using ICT and develop the skills necessary to apply this understanding.

Provide the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to prepare for employment.

This course would suit students who:  have an interest in the applications of ICT;  would like to study ICT at university level;  may want a career in ICT.

Assessment is by Portfolio, Coursework and Examination.

A BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in ICT is a qualification which builds upon the content of the OCR National Award studied in Year 9, 10 and 11.

Languages A Level Overview

Languages offered at All Hallows A Level: French, Spanish, German and Mandarin.

The course is designed to give you a profound understanding of your chosen language. You will study topics which are relevant to young people and learn how to express your opinions on them. You will learn about the mechanics of the language - e.g. grammar and vocabulary and about how people live and use language in the countries where the language is spoken. Your study will include cultural topics such as film and works of literature.

Assessment You will be externally assessed at the end of year 13.

The Listening, Reading and Writing exams account for 70% of your marks, and the Speaking test accounts for 30%.

Entry Requirements 5 GCSE’s A* - C Including English Language grade 5.

Grade B in your chosen Language.

What else do I need to know?

You will have the opportunity to take part in trips and will be strongly encouraged to visit a country where your language is spoken. You will benefit from small size classes. Results at All Hallows puts all languages in the top 25% of schools, according to ALPS data.

Applied Law - BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate Overview

The Extended Certificate is a high quality, industry recognised qualification geared to the specific requirements of the Legal Sector. At Level 3 it has been accredited by QCA to be equivalent to A Level. It is delivered as a two year programme, to provide a qualification at Pass, Merit or Distinction.

How is the BTEC National in Applied Law structured?

Mathematics A Level Overview

A level Maths provides students with a thorough grounding in the mathematical tools and techniques often needed in the workplace. The logic and reasoning skills developed by studying A level Maths make sure the qualification is widely respected even in non Mathematical arenas.

A level Maths content is 100% prescribed, containing Pure and Applied Maths. The Applied Maths is drawn from Statistics and Mechanics only.

Overarching themes of mathematical argument , language and proof, problem solving and mathematical modelling underpin all parts of the qualification.

Further Mathematics A Level Overview

A level Further Maths is designed to broaden and deepen the mathematical knowledge and skills developed when studying A level Mathematics. It may be studied alongside or after taking A level Maths to provide a stimulating experience for those who enjoy the subject.

Music A Level Overview

The study of music is a versatile and well-respected subject by all universities. Whether you choose to study this with a view to a career in music, or as a complimentary A-Level; it offers the opportunity to develop a range of skills from analysis and composition to self-confidence and self-expression. Music is often paired with Sciences and Mathematics as a sound route into Engineering or Media.

Composing Music allows you to develop your skills as a composer.

You can write for any combination of instruments in any style of music. Students will be required to write to a set brief and submit a free composition. We have both Sibelius 7 and Logic X Software for students to use.

Performing Music allows you to develop confidence and virtuosity as a performer. Students are required to perform an extended programme of music which showcases your talents as a performer either with an ensemble, as a solo artist or a mixture of both disciplines. Students’ performances will be showcased at the annual A Level performing evening in partnership with the Performing Arts faculty.

Entry Requirements 5 GCSE’s A* - C including English Language grade 4 Grade B in Music, RSL or BTEC equivalent.

Students with grade C will be considered.

Listening and Appraising Music develops your analytical listening skills. Through the study of music from Western Classical to Bollywood, students will gain a wider appreciation of music from many different countries. You will have to show you can evaluate and critically analyse a variety of styles and genres.

Music Technology A Level Overview

Music Technology covers all aspects of creative studio work including stereo ambient recording, multi-track recording, electro-acoustic music, arranging, studio engineering, producing and composition for film. The aim of the department is to foster creativity and skill in the use of the latest technology and to equip pupils with up-to-date knowledge for their future work in the studio-music environment. Music Technology is taught following the Edexel syllabus and pupils are encouraged to work well beyond the briefs and limits set by the board. All students have access to a dedicated Sixth Form music room throughout the day for their individual work.

The music technology facilities include a recording studio, an editing studio and two computer music suites running Logic pro X and Sibelius software.

Music Technology requires you to submit a portfolio of work which includes a recording and technology-based composition. Students are also assessed on their listening and analysing skills and as well as their ability to produce and mix under examination conditions.

Physics Overview

At Physics ‘A’ level we take the ideas introduced at GCSE, expand and enhance the understanding of a subject whose principles have been used to design and manufacture everything from the pen to the space shuttle.

Physics is also one of the subjects where research is still undertaken purely for the sake of knowledge, investigating how particles interact and what really makes the universe work.

Discoveries from this research will eventually lead to new innovations in our everyday lives.

The Department enjoys a good success rate at A level, providing a well rounded and balanced development of student’s skills. This allows those who study Physics to go on to follow a diverse range of subjects in Higher Education. As well as Physics they include; Medicine, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, Mathematics, Biological Science, Chemistry and Aeronautical Engineering to name but a few.

Politics A Level Overview

Politics is a course that allows students to gain an insight into the processes by which political decisions are made and the forces that drive them. A level Politics is a good choice for students considering a career in the professions, or those who simply want to understand how the world works.

A-level Politics will follow the AQA specification. The course consists of 3 units, covering; 

Government and politics of the UK, the UK constitution, the role of Parliament, elections and referendums, political parties and the European Union.



Psychology A Level Overview

Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behaviour. It has links to careers in industry, healthcare, education and social services.

Throughout your study of Psychology you will look at a wide variety of issues and behaviours; why do we obey people in authority? What are the implications for society of our obedience? How do we learn?

Why can we remember lyrics to songs but forget our homework?

During your study you will find the answer to some of these questions, and open the door to many more. Lessons are a unique combination of essay writing, similar to humanities subjects and scientific theories, with some statistics thrown in for good measure.

Religion, Philosophy and Ethics A Level Overview

AIMS: To study core philosophical, theological and ethical theories and learn to evaluate them critically. Through the study of Philosophy students will develop the ability to formulate and structure an argument, identify and draw out weaknesses and to express themselves logically and with precision. Students should adopt an enquiring, critical and reflective approach, developing their own values, opinions and attitudes in the light of their learning.

Is this course for me? Theatre Studies A Level Overview

Theatre Studies is a rewarding, engaging and demanding subject but if you are passionate about Drama, Literature and Performance then this subject is for you.

Theatre allows us to explore the world around us.

We can question, challenge, dissect and engage with human behaviour, culture and politics in a safe and creative learning environment.

The course demands a physical level of fitness and ability as we will study practitioners such as Berkoff, Frantic Assembly and Push.

The course combines hard work with improvisation, interpretation and lots of fun.

Studying theatre can increase self-esteem, and confidence. It helps develop personal qualities like public speaking and team working. These are transferable skills useful in many career paths such as politics, media and even medicine.

This course will take you on a journey through everything that makes the theatre great – from understanding texts through to set, lighting and costume design and, of course, performance techniques. You’ll learn about and perform works by some of the leading writers and combine this with regular trips to live drama performances.
