As we bring academic year 2014 - 2015 to a close with this bumper edition of our College Magazine, I’d like to thank all students, staff, parents and governors for your contribution to the life and work of All Hallows.

Partnership, teamwork and collaboration are at the heart of our successful community and they are the first things visitors and new staff notice. In this edition there are many examples of activities, which simply would not happen for students without such a sense of common purpose, underpinned by our values and mission amongst our staff.

This term we received word that Alison Clarke, a Liverpool Hope University researcher passed her PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) on her study of our College ethos and values. It’s a 90,000 word research document on All Hallows and we’ve received an executive summary of around 15,000 words. Dr Alison Clarke’s study points to the power of values to transform learning communities through a common ownership of the language of values, which at the same time allows for everyone to make them their own. Our powerful mission statement ‘Aspire not to have more but to be more’ also stood out as a source of inspiration and formation of our community. The thesis is a massive piece of work in which Alison talks about how the study has both enriched and convinced her that other schools need to focus on the development of the whole person through values. I’d like to thank those members of staff and students who were interviewed in this study – your experience of All Hallows has been superbly captured in this work and I’m sure Alison’s work will lead to further research interest in our College and other successful Church schools in the future.

Our first day back after half term was celebrated with the annual All Hallows International Feast Day Masses. Inspired by the feast of Pentecost a week earlier, Mass was celebrated in a host of different languages, including Tamil, Hindi, French and Italian. Fr Francis demonstrated his language prowess by reciting from memory, the Hail Mary in Latin. As we recalled the story of Pentecost and the many languages spoken by the Apostles, we were invited to exchange a word of peace in a different language as provided by Mr Deay and the Modern Foreign Languages faculty. The College Hall was abuzz with the speaking of tongues. Once again we were blessed to be led by the ever growing Worship Band and Choir, whose full sound, led by Mr Cunningham and Mr Andrews, inspired us to raise our voices in praise. Our thanks also go to all those who contributed, including Father Francis, the Eucharistic Ministers, readers from the Faith Council, the Language students, and the Year 11 Dance Company, choreographed by Ms Mellor, who delighted us with a wonderful piece of contemporary dance.

Needless to say, the cake, provided by Innovate to celebrate the birthday of the Church was well received by all at the end of Mass. A feast indeed! We take this opportunity to say thank you and God’s blessings upon sixth former Hannah Massey, whose beautiful playing of the flute has enriched our liturgies with moving melodies over her years at All Hallows.

Year 11 students attended a Mass, celebrated by Father Francis, on Tuesday 9 June 2015 to mark their five years with us and give thanks for all they have received and given. Father Francis has seen the Year 11 students develop their spiritual life over their time at All Hallows. Students gave their thanks with offertory gifts that reflected their time at College, which included their whole year group photograph to symbolise their bonding and a globe to represent their future within the world. Students fully participated in the mass by singing and performing the actions to their favourite hymn 'Lord I lift your name on high'. After the mass Mr Slobodian presented a video clip that included a photograph of every student when they were in Year 7 and then how they have changed by showing their most recent Year 11 photographs, which filled the hall with laughter and allowed students to reflect on their learning journey. Teachers joined their students in the leavers mass and wished them luck for the future and on their results day. It was a wonderful mass, with a fantastic year group to whom we wish every success in the future.—Mrs. Williams

On Tuesday 9 June we were lucky enough to be joined

by G.P Taylor, one of the UK’s leading fiction writers and a New York Times bestselling author. He was with us for the whole day, running a workshop designed to inspire young writers and give them the tools to go and write their own novels.

As an author I get to visit a lot of schools. I was especially impressed by All Hallows. It is obvious that it an exceptional place of learning. The students are happy and eager to learn and a pleasure to teach.

16 of our Year 7’s were joined by 16 pupils from Years 5 and 6 from St Alban’s and Christ the King. Students enjoyed a talk from Graham about his journey to become an author, as well as enjoying the opportunity to create their own characters, settings and plots. Finally, we ended the day with the fantastic experience of listening to some spooky story-telling.

Graham commented on how impressed he was with all of the students and the warm, welcoming atmosphere within the school.

Pope Francis announced that 2015 will be a year dedicated to the promotion of consecrated life and is asking the church's religious sisters, brothers and priests to "wake up the world" with their testimony of faith, holiness and hope.

Year 8 pupils welcomed Presentation Sisters Susan and Bernadette from Chesterfield and Christian Brothers George and David from Hale Barns to spend a day learning about their call to the religious life and the amazing work they have done throughout the world and continue to do with young people today.

The students were eager to learn about what had influenced their decision to follow a Religious Vocation. They answered the many questions the students put to them.

The students in turn were asked to pray for the work of all Religious ministries and be open to listening to what God is calling them to do with their own lives.

The All Hallows community have just enjoyed another “Share Your Talents” Day. This is the 5th year that our staff have shared with the students their own talents or interests. This year the students could choose from a range of 46 different activities, they enjoyed old favourites such as the countryside walks and “stitch a gift” alongside some new talents including “Airbrush Art” and “Flower Making with Sugar Paste”. Our staff offer a diverse range of talents with exciting opportunities for our students to try out new things. It is always a pleasure to watch students of all ages taking part in the activities alongside each other and meeting people they otherwise wouldn’t get the opportunity to meet. It is a lovely celebration of our community at the end of another year of hard work form staff and students alike. I would like to thank our staff for offering such a fantastic range of opportunities and the students for making the day so enjoyable.

SHARE YOUR TALENTS DAY 2015

STITCH A GIFT In this popular session, students were instructed by the talented Mrs Ibison and Miss Stebbings in how to create a lavender scented heart or cushion. They picked their patterns and stitched away before stuffing them and adding in real lavender. The more 'advanced' present were even able to personalise their creations with embroidery thread, whilst others just focussed on not tying themselves in knots! At the end of the day they were able to take home the crafts they had created as presents for loved ones.

THE TASTE OF ITALIAN During our super-speedy Italian course with Miss Skulova, we have managed to learn how to greet, introduce ourselves and ask for the most delicious Italian delicacies once visiting this European Mecca of ancient culture, history, food and stunning scenery.

Some of us also won a prize by mastering the Italian quiz.

However, the absolute highlight was when we discovered that we actually don’t really need to speak fluent Italian to get by in Italy! The Italian gestures say it all!

JAZZ AND BLUES WORKSHOP In the Jazz and Blues workshop on Share your Talents Day, a small but dedicated group set out to improve their musicianship skills and learn more about Jazz. Firstly we worked on aspects of improvisation and looked at how free jazz can be. Then, during the day we started working in the traditional ’12 bar blues’ structure and put together a great group performance at the end of the afternoon! The final result was fantastic. Well done all for working so hard and having so much fun in the process!

FOREST ADVENTURE

HISTORY OF GUITAR Mr Nickson and Mr Mallon demonstrated the different and unique styles and history of the guitar, from Classical through to The Blues and Rock music. The students thoroughly enjoyed learning new techniques, undertaking fresh challenges and making wonderful new noises with their instruments.

A fantastic time was had by staff and students on our "Forest Adventure" in Macclesfield Forest. It was a pleasure to take the students to this lovely setting just a few miles from the College on the last day of term. Five members of staff and 50 students completed the 9k trail around the edge of Macclesfield Forest starting at Trentabank car park. We proceeded up Charity Lane with caution as we had been warned by Mr Lawson that he would be coming down at speed with those students who had chosen the mountain biking option! Thankfully no collisions, just some minor blisters, lots of fun and we returned in great spirits in time for the end of day registration.

HAMA BEADS Students showed off their creative sides designing a variety of Hama Bead designs! We created coasters, key rings and a range of different items to take home. It was lovely to see all the different colours and designs produced.

BUILDING A WEBSITE Students used software in order to have a go at creating a website. Students were very imaginative and created websites from everything from sports to their favourite hobbies and crafts. Students developed skills using software they haven't used before as well as engaging in a task that they enjoyed!

The Butterfly Explosion As part of Share Your Talents Day over 70 students created a swarm of colourful butterflies using a variety of materials, including obsolete library books, in a session led by Mrs Wilkinson and Mrs Remfry. Mrs Wilkinson's idea was to create an original and meaningful piece of art for the lower library. The installation will be developed over the coming school year as part of the plan to update the Barlow Library. Ms Sinclair, our school librarian, said of the project: 'The butterflies are an uplifting and colourful addition to the library environment. They are unique as they have been created by our students and staff. My plan is to add some inspirational words to reflect our whole school commitment to reading. Watch this space!'

Expert Readers Visit St Alban's Catholic Primary A group of students were ambassadors for the love of reading when they visited St Alban's Catholic Primary School on Share Your Talents Day. They spent their time listening to and reading with the pupils. The group were very warmly welcomed by Mrs Cook, Head teacher at the school. Under the expert organisation of Mrs Smith, the students were given the opportunity to work with pupils from each year group from pre-school upwards and they loved every minute of the experience. Mr Billings (Principal) and Mrs Connor (Deputy Principal) accompanied the students on this venture. Mrs Connor said 'Not only did our students love the reading, they also enjoyed the chance to re-visit memories of primary school themselves, enjoying playtime and primary school dinners!' At the end of the day All Hallows students were treated to a performance of an dance performed by St Alban's pupils who had won a eco-competition, gaining £50,000 for their school to spend on energy saving projects. Mr Billings said 'the dance was very energetic and entertaining - we can't wait for these pupils to become students at All Hallows and join our performing arts activities!'

Lyme Park Running For 22 students the Share Your Talents Day meant anything but an 'easy ride'. They decided to sign themselves up for either a 5k or 10K (that's 3 miles or 6.3 miles) .

So-how was it? Well the answer is “TOUGH”. The first mile was up the steepest hill possible....a few of us had to walk, I won't name names. Out of the 9 students opting for the 10K, this swiftly became 3 students due to the difficulty of the route. Hats off to Jake Bendall, Luke Tidsey and Luigi Pinto for their absolute grit and determination to battle through ’til the end! They were so fast! Well done also to Aaliyah who breezed through the 5k and was still running around and doing cartwheels after she'd finished.

A great day and so beautiful to see the environment, lake and stunning views of the countryside as we ran through.

All Hallows Catholic College wishes to congratulate over 40 of its students from seven feeder parishes who recently made a formal commitment to their Christian faith in the Sacrament of Confirmation.

In thanksgiving, Mass was celebrated in the All Hallows Chapel by Fr Indrias Rehmat, visiting the Parish of St. Alban’s from Christ the King Seminary in Karachi, Pakistan. All Hallows is delighted to be part of these young people’s journey in faith and we celebrate with them the importance of faith in life and in the making of a better world.

We pray that these young people will always sense the guiding presence of the Holy Spirit as, urged on by the Bishop of Shrewsbury Mark Davies, they ‘go out to the whole world and proclaim the Good News’.

Year 7 gathered together on Wednesday 24 June to participate in a sponsored Zumbathon, to raise money for the charity LEPRA. We can now announce that the year group raised a huge £924.27, with some students raising over £40 individually.

LEPRA is a UK registered international charity which focuses on people who find themselves trapped by disease, poverty and prejudice.

A massive well done to all students who demonstrated compassion and honourable purpose through their fundraising efforts.

Throughout the month of June, students in Year 10 have been collecting coins in order to raise funds for the College clinic in Tamil Nadu in India.

Their challenge was to bring in coinage in denominations of 50 pence and below.

Every form room was provided with a thermometer style totaliser and so as the coins rolled in the 'temperatures' rose. The fund raising idea was originally suggested by 10 Wiseman tutor Ms Corah as a 'silver mile'.

It morphed into its final form, when I took on board another great idea from Mrs Garvey, which was to cover a map of India with the coins.

During the month, the coins arrived in ones and twos, in envelopes and by the bagful. I dealt with emails and phone calls from interested parents wanting to contribute. When the appeal monies were totalled up we had raised in excess of £180.

On Wednesday July 15, each form had the opportunity to come down to the Sixth Form Common Room and add their 'coins for India' as our India map was gradually covered in coins. The whole event had put into action our mission statement of 'Aspire not to have more but to be more' as the students helped in supporting others less fortunate than themselves.

Over 60 Year 8 students attended a residential retreat at Alton Castle Youth Retreat Centre, in Staffordshire. Students were given the opportunity to grow in confidence as they learnt something more about themselves, each other and their faith. Each day began and ended with a time of prayer during which we were invited to reflect on our faith journey and on our relationship with God and others.

Each fun activity, be it trekking, mountain-biking, crate stacking, archery or survival training, had prayer and meditation at its centre. Without doubt the recently re-introduced crate stacking activity was voted most popular; with the team from ‘Croxden’ equalling the all schools record of a 15 high stack of crates.

It was brilliant….it was fun and interesting…. the activities were fantastic!... It was a great experience - I doubt I’ll ever forget it’.

“IT WAS AN AMAZING EVENING!” YEAR 11 PROM

Over the course of the year, a small group of students organised the Prom with the help of Head of Year, Mrs Williams.

On Saturday 13 June 2015 the beautiful setting of Cranage Hall hosted Year 11 students from All Hallows Catholic College for a celebratory evening. The hall gave a warm welcome with its VIP red carpet and elegant aesthetics. As the students arrived in a delightful array of coloured dresses and stylish suits the evening soon began.

One student, Sarah Duffy, commented that “It was a fabulous evening, people were dancing and enjoying the music”. Along with the buzzing atmosphere the students and staff enjoyed a three course meal. After the meal the students talked, danced and enjoyed their last time together as the Class of 2015. For many guests it was ‘unforgettable evening’ and staff members were proud of how sophisticated the students looked and acted as stewards of

All Hallows. The College wanted to congratulate those involved in making the night a great success, which had an attendance of over 100 students. Overall, an evening of happy memories was created – we wanted to say a massive “well done” to all of our students in their exams and we look forward to seeing them all on results day. For many of our students the next step is coming back to join our Sixth Form in September to study their respective subjects.

The Sixth Form Leavers Dinner this year was celebrated at the 4* Radisson Edwardian Hotel in Manchester city centre. Students and staff enjoyed a formal dinner together followed by an evening of dancing. The meal had been organised by Mrs Garvey and the Sixth Form Council. "We had been looking forward to this with mixed emotions, a sense of relief that our exams were over but also a realisation that this would probably be our last night out together as a whole year group was quite sad." All those feelings aside, we were treated like VIP's with a 'Red Carpet' entrance and our private bar and banquet room. The food was great, the company was as expected and the DJ had us dancing until the witching hour of midnight.

We had a really memorable evening. Thank you to everyone who made this so special.

In June, four boys from All Hallows represented the College at the East Cheshire Schools Street Dance competition. Despite it being the first time that the College has entered the event, the boys wowed the judges to scoop 1st place! The break dancing group saw off stiff competition from 3 other Cheshire schools. Year 7 student, Tyler Lovatt, and Year 9 students, Kyle Attward, Thomas Davis and Jack Bushill stunned judges with their routine, which was choreographed by Rikki Prince. The competition was held at Macclesfield Academy. The group have been rehearsing since January, and attend classes, run by Rikki, every Monday night after school.

Classes are still open to any boys from any year group and will continue to run in September.

JOESPH AND THE TECHNICOLOUR DREAMCOAT COLLEGE PRODUCTION Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat was performed for four nights at the start of July at All Hallows and I have to say, the production was as vibrant as the set.

The cast really did set the crowd on fire- and that was nothing to do with the fact that the hall reached around 40 degrees on the opening night.

Boasting an enormous cast of both All Hallows students and pupils from St John’s, St Benedict’s, St Gregory’s, St Mary’s ,Christ the King, St Alban’s, Gawsworth and St Paul’s we really did exceed all expectations with this one. To quote Mr Howells, Head of Sixth Form: “I don’t usually enjoy any musicals, but this one really was good”.

Mr Richardson managed to stay relatively calm and only said he was tired around 17 times compared with last year’s 57. Mr Andrews did a sterling job on the keyboard and discovered the ‘steel drum ‘mode. The harmonies from the cast were truly magnificent with very difficult scores of music being sung with passion and commitment. We had lovely feedback about our orchestra who sounded beautiful. Their hard work over the last 6 months has paid off.

With a different primary pupil playing the leading roles of 19 20

cowboy/cowgirl and ‘Elvis’ each night, there was plenty of scope for things to become confusing for the cast but the hay bales were correctly set, the cowboy hats placed on the correct side of the stage and no noticeable errors occurred. One of the most impressive parts of the show had to be Alistair Nickson’s moustache which changed on a nightly basis. A particular favourite of mine was the handle bar moustache which didn’t stay on so poor Alistair had to sing Canaan Days whilst trying to re glue it to his face.

Ms Mellor and Chase Dance Company made the show come to life with some incredible choreography. The shadow dance at the start of Act 2 was fascinating. Miss Elliott coached the primaries through some wonderful dance moves to GO GO Joseph and also helped out with the orchestra when she wasn’t singing and mentoring by playing the Trumpet. Is there an end to the talent of the faculty?

As Head of Performing Arts I would like to take the opportunity to thank my colleagues who amaze me with their creativity, energy and commitment to the success of every production we set out to bring to life. It takes a long time to tie all the theatrical elements together and they work tirelessly to ensure that everyone involved not only has an enriching and rewarding experience, but that the standard of the production is worth the paying audience.

I would like to thank all the cast, orchestra and dancers, back stage crew and Directors and especially Mr Richardson for creating yet another wonderful All Hallows College Production.

The All Hallows “the breakfast was a great Student Council organised and ran a Fairtrade opportunity to raise awareness Breakfast on Monday 15 June for the very important causes 2015 to raise awareness of different Fairtrade products and that Fairtrade works for. We can to celebrate being a Fairtrade work to help producers improve school. Several members of the All Hallows community joined in their circumstances�. with these celebrations, each year group being represented at the breakfast. It was a delight to see different members of staff, parishioners from St Albans and students drinking Fairtrade fruit juice and enjoying Fairtrade spreads on their toast. Ms Harrison and Revd Harrison shared a few words about the principles and products of fair trade and the links between consumers and producers.

As a Fairtrade school, All Hallows Fairtrade Council meets once every half term to discuss and develop ideas to spread the message of Fairtrade. The members of the Council planned and organised the breakfast, creating advertising posters, writing invitations and 22

preparing all of the food and tables beforehand. The breakfast was enjoyed by many and consequently the event raised lots of awareness for Fairtrade, with leaflets and stickers distributed to each person who came along to the breakfast.

“The Liverpool Hope trip was a really memorable experience” New for the Year 7 students joining All Hallows Catholic College this September was a transition event at Liverpool Hope University. The aim of the residential experience, which took place from 7-9 July was to give the Year 6 pupils a chance to have fun, learn, make new friends, get to know some of their new teachers and start to think about their aspirations and hopes for the future. Over two thirds of the students who will join us as Year 7 in September 2015 were able to attend, representing thirty two different primary schools.

Liverpool Hope University is one of the Cathedral group of universities with a fantastic reputation for academic study and research and for its pastoral care of students. The Year 6 had extensive use of the fantastic facilities, met some of the university staff and gained a little insight into the life of a university.

Our mission statement is ‘Aspire not to have more but to be more’. At Liverpool Hope University we helped our young people to begin a new stage of their learning journey with high aspirations and with the honourable purpose of trying to be the best they can be.

One of the highlights of the visit was the graduation ceremony, held in the University Chapel which was attended by Mr Billings, the primary head teachers from some of our main feeder schools and Professor Bill Chambers, Pro Vice-Chancellor Emeritus, from Liverpool Hope University. Each of the students proudly wore their cap and gown and were presented with awards and certificates including a pen inscribed with the College name in a presentation box. All ready to start work in the new term at All Hallows!

The staff team were really delighted with the way in which the Year 6 responded to everything they were asked to do. They were polite and good company for the few days and we really look forward to working with a great group of young people from September. Many wonderful 24

comments were received from the university staff as well about the way in which the pupils conducted themselves.

Dara Fowler and Amy Marsh, Head Boy and Head Girl at St Alban’s Primary School were just two of the people who attended and they wrote ‘The Liverpool Hope trip was a really memorable experience. We found out what life was like at university and met lots of new people during our time there. We even got the amazing opportunity to receive a lecture on superheroes and the mind-blowing features they have in common with animals and other living things. We also got several chances throughout the trip to reflect on the day and the days to come. During the day we were with our forms doing a variety of fun activities and at night we slept in the halls of residence with our primary school friends.

There were many activities which needed teamwork and skills the activities were orienteering, dodgeball, minefield, basketball, curling, archery, football, relay races, hockey and hurdles. The teachers were also very kind and helped us with any problems that we had. Overall it was an outstanding residential that we will never forget.’

On a wet blustery grey day in July both Year 12 Fine Art and Textiles students visited the Manchester Art Gallery. Textile students took part in a number of workshops where they were able to engage with different exhibitions. The exhibition that had the biggest impact on the students was the Black on Black exhibition; it was a selection of necklaces where only black materials were used. The types of materials used, scale and subject matter varied greatly. Students produced a series of ‘drawings’ on black card using only black materials to produce very subtle textured images.

The students have begun their own personal study; a large body of work that will count towards their final grades.

Students were able to use the gallery to develop their own projects. The gallery holds a vast array of work meaning there was something for everyone. Personal interests varied from the ornate frames surrounding the paintings, the contrasting internal architecture of the building and actual artwork!

Students really embraced the whole trip each gaining something different from the experience. Our hope is that these students will continue to enrich their lives by continuing to experience and enjoy these amazing spaces whatever their eventual vocation.

Below are the first-hand experiences of a Fine Art student on the trip: “During the Enrichment Week, we we’re given the opportunity to visit the Manchester City Art Gallery as a part of our A Level Fine Art course. My main aim by the end of the trip was to get more ideas on what I would want to do for our next art project in Year 13 as I have been very indecisive since we have been introduced to our new topic which is Personal Study. Being quite open minded when it comes to art, I enjoyed going round reading all the information given on each art piece; they gave me more understanding on the story behind it. Seeing the gallery from the outside, it looked very ancient and small and when you walk inside as we entered the Secret Garden, it looked very Egyptian and old with brown, stone walls but this was then contradicted by the other side of the building which looked very modern. The building was separated in many different rooms and I liked how some were put in certain groups in which all art pieces were of the same style, for example one section was full of Greek Gods and Goddesses inspired art. Overall, I really enjoyed going round the art gallery and how it is a place where different types of people in different age groups were able to interact with the art pieces. Sixth form students at All Hallows took the opportunity to appreciate what being a citizen in the United Kingdom really means during a History Department trip to London this July. Students walked the corridors of power in the Houses of Parliament on the day Chancellor George Osborne delivered the first Conservative budget in almost two decades.

After a tour of the Houses of Parliament, students experienced what it would be like to chair a Parliamentary Select Committee with their Member of Parliament, David Rutley. David took answers from the students across a range of themes from his role of MP and what brought him into politics, to the regeneration of Macclesfield town centre and his support for dairy farming families within our College. Furthermore, as well as experiencing the London Underground, students enjoyed the hustle and bustle of court proceedings at the Old Bailey Crown Court. From the public galleries students observed first hand a defendant being cross examined by both the defence and prosecution in front of a jury. There was still time for students to learn about the history of London’s more gruesome past, taking a tour of the London Dungeons before returning home, but not before a spot of shopping along Oxford Street and Carnaby Street.

The Italy trip of 2015 was unforgettable.

The experience was amazing and so much fun. We visited all the beautiful land marks in 6 days; those 6 days were so, so, so busy it's safe to say on the 7th day we rested. I learnt so much about Italy and would go back in an instant. - Georgia Hall

The visit to Italy taught me a lot about ancient life but I also learnt a lot about modern Rome and its culture. The food was lovely and the buildings were fantastic and very eye-opening as they were thousands of years old made by descendants from us before Jesus was born. Max Linton

On the Saturday, Miss Easter, Mr Deay, Mrs Stewart, Mr Power and students met up at the airport; it was early in the morning, but as we went through the airport procedures and boarded our plane, we were very excited about the trip that lay ahead of us.

The first site we visited was the world-famous Colosseum, known for its history and the lasting ruins that still stand today; the intricately complex construction once accommodated up to 50,000 people. Rome was crowded and walking through the busy streets under the hot sun did prove challenging, but we found it an impressive and intriguing city that exuded history and culture. During our time in Rome, we also visited the Roman Forum, Palatine Hill and Trevi Fountain. In addition, we had the privilege of a good amount of independent sightseeing, which gave us much insight into culture and daily life in Italy.

The Vatican was truly inspirational to visit. In the Sistine Chapel it was absolutely breath-taking to see the world-renowned artwork by Michelangelo. St. Peter's Basilica is an imposingly magnificent space that fills you with awe, as the 27

architectural splendour speaks to you without the need for words, the reverence that the place is beheld with.

After a morning spent on the long drive to Sorrento (where we would spend the latter part of our trip) we climbed Mt. Vesuvius, enjoying a spectacular view of the volcano from the great height. We then visited Herculaneum, an ancient Roman town covered by pyroclastic flows from Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD. The ruins gave a great insight into the complex infrastructure that the Roman civilisation had already mastered. The day spent in Pompeii furthered this knowledge as we wandered through the alleyways and pavements, taking in all the preserved ruins that still stand to this day, a testament of the remarkable ancient Roman civilisation that once existed.

On the last day, we spent the morning at the swimming pool at our hotel, then boarded the bus to head to the airport; exhausted but happy as we went home with memories of knowledge, learning and fun. - Chen Ji

AUTHOR VISITS ALL HALLOWS TO PROMOTE HER NEW SEARFARING ADVENTURE: ‘PHOENIX RISING’

Year 8 and 9 students enjoyed an entertaining and informative session with award winning, local writer, Bryony Pearce. ‘Phoenix Rising’ is her third book and focuses on a group of pirates trying to survive a dystopian world, where oil and gas have run out and the environment is trying to recover from the eruption of the Yellowstone super volcano. Toby, son of the Phoenix‘s captain is trying to ensure that the ship can out run the Banshee, a rival salvage ship that wants to steal its precious cargo of oil. It’s action packed stuff!

Our students were treated to an interactive session where they voiced their imaginings of what the world would be like five hundred years in the future. (This provided some very interesting answers indeed!)

Bryony then went on to explain how and why she started writing, as well as giving writing advice to the audience. The session ended with a game of pirate ‘Call my Bluff’ with students in two teams: The Phoenix and The Banshee. Students worked together to pick out the true meaning of nautical terms such as ‘hornswaggle’, ‘arast’ and ‘black spot’. Luckily, it was a draw, so ‘Bryony gave us a nobody was forced to walk the plank!

FORMER STUDENT GOES TO ZAMBIA

I left All Hallows in 2012 with the intentions of studying Sport & Exercise Science. The following year I began studying Sport Science at Loughborough University. I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do career-wise, the Army had always been an option for me. After spending a year with the Army Reserve with the East Midlands Officer Training Corps, I’d decided against it and focused more of my time working in and around football.

I became the BUCS football activator for the University at the start of my second year, running the recreational football programme and leagues at the University alongside our BUCS squads. Through this I have been offered a once in a lifetime opportunity to travel and work in Zambia for 2 months with the fantastic sportIDEALS project.

In Zambia, we will be working alongside ‘Sport In Action’, a non-government organisation aimed at improving quality of life for those who need it most. With my Zambian colleagues, I will be working at a school of similar size to All Hallows, in Chipata, for 2 months. 90% of the students at the school are AIDS orphans. The prevalence of AIDS is huge in Zambia; 12% of their entire population suffer from the disease. The school itself has very limited facilities; it only has 1 tarmacked pitch used for netball and basketball and football and volleyball are played on dirt pitches, often barefoot.

My time at All Hallows taught me a lot, especially with regards to global awareness and being compassionate towards others. Raising money for Tamil Nadu through staff vs sixth form football matches was my first taste of fundraising for development. Now global sport development is now looking like something in which I hope to have a career in. I believe All Hallows was the catalyst which has led me to this opportunity, I can’t express how grateful I am for the experience I had whilst I was still at All Hallows! For this reason, I was over the moon when our coaching team decided to place ‘Aspire not to have more, but to be more’ on our shirts for when we’re out in Zambia.

In order to travel to Zambia, I have completed 1 marathon, 1 half marathon and a 480km cycle so far and I’m entering the Stoke half -marathon as well before I fly out. ‘Reading a good book is like meeting a new friend’. Mr Power.

Books can change your life. The moment you get into a story and find you can’t stop turning pages something remarkable happens; your imagination, concentration and emotions are all engaged and according to the great poets you become more human.

One of the greatest challenges to being an English teacher is finding ways to present a collection of words, bringing them to life in front of a class of sleepy students. When Shakespeare wrote Macbeth he didn’t have to think about the teenagers of the future struggling to untangle his metaphors and bawdy humour and strange spelling.

At All Hallows one of the ways we engage with and support new readers is through our Peer Reading Programme. For over two years, students of all abilities have met every week to talk about books and read together. The College also provides space for students to read books in a peaceful environment during form time.

The All Hallows Peer reading scheme is not just about hearing another person read and correcting their mistakes. All the students involved are trained to appreciate some of the qualities that are required to inspire another person. The peer reading scheme is based on the principles of Carl Rogers, that in order to bring out the best in another person, a mentor needs to have three key qualities.

The first characteristic is what Roger calls Unconditional Positive Regard. Put simply, this is a respect and sense of appreciation for another person that is the foundation for learning. It means the student is allowed to make mistakes and encouraged to think independently.

The second quality is empathy. This is the ability of the mentor to see things from the other person’s point of view. One way our peer reading mentors help to show empathy to build up a good relationship with the students before they start to read. Mentors are encouraged to be aware of their body language, listen carefully and give their full attention to the other student.

Finally, mentors are asked to be genuine. This means that All Hallows mentors are encouraged to be aware of the way they speak and interact with others.

Peer reading encourages students to be honest and give constructive feedback.

Mentors and students are expected to be considerate and to focus on the way they are behaving, thinking about the book and the person they are sitting with.

This can mean checking body language to make sure you are relaxed and it can also mean finding ways to reflect back a genuine interest in the story and the person reading.

The role of the mentor is to share their love of reading with another person and to learn to fully listen carefully to the student they are working with. Ms Sinclair and Mrs Lawrey attended the ceremony to hear Sally Green and Curtis Jobling talk about their writing. Next year we hope to take some students to enjoy the experience and the cakes!

Mrs Lawrey, who was extremely dedicated and read all the shortlist, said of the event: “It was such an inspiration to hear what inspired Curtis and Sally to begin writing”

The book award is unique in that it is voted for by the students and staff of all the secondary schools in the county. This year’s winner, Sally Green, is a local writer hailing from Warrington. ‘Half Wild’ is the first in a trilogy of books about Nathan Bryn, half white witch and half black witch.

THIS SUMMERS HOTTEST READS! Six (hopefully) glorious weeks of rest and relaxation are now upon us, with plenty of time for catching up on all those books we haven’t had time to read during the busy school year!

If you are in the mood for something dark and dystopian…

The Maze Runner Trilogy and prequel by The Kill Order by James Dashner Thomas wakes up in an elevator car with no memory except his name. He finds he is part of a community of about 50 teen boys called Gladers, and all share the same pattern of memory loss. Their leader's name is Alby. In an artificial environment built as an experiment by unknown, unseen scientists called Creators, they live in the Glade, and their lives revolve around trying to solve the maze.

STUDENTS AMAZED BY CHESHIRE SHOW On Tuesday 23 June, 14 students and 2 members of staff went to the Cheshire County show. We set off in the mini bus from College and 45 minutes later we arrive at the Cheshire County Show Ground. As we arrived we spotted many large white marquees, fairground rides and could hear several farm animals and voices over the PA System.

We set off to explore the show, slightly taken by surprise at just how big it was. The students looked at the vast array of stalls and displays, selling everything from clothing, food, pet supplies and even tractors, enjoying the food samples where ever they could. We then went to the fair ground and enjoyed the rides, but the highlight was the 400ft high Merry-go-round. ‘It was so scary because it was spinning us round and round and going very high’ said Jack Gosling. The students also solved fake crimes along with getting their finger prints done at the Cheshire Police stand.

Obviously the Cheshire Show isn’t just shopping and rides, it’s all about the farm animals and agricultural life. The students spent the afternoon touring around the animal marquees, each one filled with different breeds of farm animal. There was everything from pigs to chickens, Shire horses to dogs!

Throughout the day many of the animals were judged and shown. We sat and watched the sheep showing, looked around the various animal marquees and saw the cows, goats, pigs, ducks and chickens. It was amazing to see so many animals up close and be able to touch them in some cases. We watched the Shire Horse judging while we ate our lunch and saw the yearlings being judged and the 2 year 37 38

old mares. The horses looked really impressive in the show ring with their manes platted and walking right in front of us.

During the day we watched several of the main ring displays. One highlight was the blood hound display team, who demonstrated how they use them to find people and how they use them with horses to hunt a scent which is dragged for miles across the countryside. We also really enjoyed the motorbike display team who did amazing stunts and flips. At the end of the day, there was the grand parade where all the animals that had been judged were paraded around the main show ring and the champions were given their awards.

All through the day there were the show jumping trials and competitions in the show jumping arena. It was spectacular to see the horses so close and jumping so high.

We went home having had an amazing, but tiring day.

SIXTH FORM ENRICHMENT WEEK

ORIENTEERING On Wednesday 8 July fifty students went to Tegg’s Nose Country Park to take on a series of orienteering tasks. Students first familiarised themselves with the area by undertaking a number of challenges, including most imaginative selfie! They then attempted a set orienteering course.

Despite some wet and wild weather, students managed to find a number of clues before being finally beaten by the weather conditions. One group did manage to successfully complete the course in a creditable thirty minutes. Students showed excellent collaborative skills in working together and resilience to keep going in the face of adversity.

DANCERCISE “Dancercise? That’ll be easy!” thought Year 12. However, they got more than they bargained for with Miss Mellor putting them through a high intensity exercise class consisting of sit-ups, squat jumps and planking to name a few of the exercises.

FIRST AID Our Sixth Form were given the opportunity to train in First Aid by serving paramedics. The students were fully involved in the experiences and benefitted clearly from the practice of bandaging, particularly the right way to put on a sling, and the effort involved in CPR compressions.

It really was a beneficial experience for all concerned. We pray that none of us may ever to use it and ask God to bless the work that our health workers in all their roles 39 undertake.

SPORTING ACTIVITIES During the week, Year 12 had a fantastic opportunity to experience the art of fencing. Students were introduced to the fascinating historical development of the foil, Épée and sabre weapons. The real action involved students sparring against each other with lunges, parries and riposte. It was very enjoyable for all involved, with one of the highlights being to try and steal a hit off their teacher.

Footballers tried out the new 3G sports pitch on Tuesday morning. Some of the kit choices were curious, ranging from jeans to star striker David Houghton’s "5 star skill move bandana".

Others hit the gym in what proved to be a pretty hot session with around 30 students testing themselves in the new gym over the course of the day. This session definitely provided an insight into gym equipment and the effort required to meet those personal goals.

All of a sudden in the Tag rugby session – "Can we play contact" became the cry. This was ironic as Mr Howells had been trying to get students to play rugby for years but to no avail. This should be a lesson to all; don't pass up the chance to enrich your lives by having a go at something new.

FINANICAL AWARENESS As part of enrichment week, Year 12 students were given the opportunity to take part in a session on financial awareness, run by two visitors from Barclays Bank as part of their life skills programme. The topics covered included; choosing the right bank account for your needs, how to read bank statements, credit scores, budgeting at university, different types of insurance and the definition of terms such as APR and overdraft. Both sessions finished with a tense game of blockbusters in which two teams of students had to answer as many questions right as possible to win the coveted prize- a box of Quality Street! Many of the students actively participated in the sessions, asking insightful questions and reflecting on their own experiences with managing money so far.

The students took a great deal of knowledge and handy tips from the sessions which they can use in the future, as well as the very popular free pens!

UNIVERSITY The week culminated in two days focused on Higher Education. The first day consisted of a session run by Oriel College, Oxford introducing students to University life and students registered for and started their UCAS applications. On the second day students travelled up the M6 to Lancaster University to focus on personal statements to get a feel for the experience offered by a campus university. The students really took to the University and were made to feel very welcome by the student ambassadors.

‘Eternally grateful………

We left to go to Rome on Sunday 5th of July. It all began with a very early arrival at the airport, 4:15am to be exact, to then get on a half six flight. Once we arrived in Rome we were driven to the Catacombs which are underground graves.

Looking around at all the graves was absolutely incredible and our tour guide was very helpful as he also showed us some of the amazing art work that covered the walls of the Catacombs. We then went for a walk around Rome and were given a chance to sample some of the ice cream, which was incredible, and look through some of the designer shops, which was still incredible even if we could only afford to window shop. And thirdly we took a trip to the Spanish steps and although the walk up to the top in the Italian heat was very difficult the view from the top was most definitely worth it. Being able to look over Rome was one of the most awe-inspiring views I have ever had the pleasure of witnessing.

On the second day, we went to visit the Vatican and look around Vatican City. We had a wonderful tour guide who told us all about Michaelangelo and his beautiful art work which can be seen in the Sistine Chapel.

Vatican we got to see the vast detail that accompanies Greek and Roman architecture and art. The Sistine Chapel was absolutely breath taking and we were able to stand and look up at the balcony where the Pope makes his speeches, although sadly the Pope was not in Rome during our trip which was a shame. That night we were all taken to an area of Rome that is predominantly a student area allowing us to sample some of the best Italian food without paying the full Italian prices. We then all went out into the square and had a really great night of socialising and enjoyed watching the Roman night life go by.

When it came to our third and final day we looked around the Coliseum and were taken around by the same delightful tour guide as the previous day. We were able to see the ruins of the Coliseum and could begin to visualise what it must have been like to be sat watching the Gladiators fight. It was a really great end to the day. We then ended the trip with a group meal which allowed us all to relax and have a great laugh.

It was a lovely end to the trip.

I had the most amazing time in Rome and would definitely recommend people to go there in the future. It is a beautiful city and an incredible experience.

EXHIBITION Students and staff at All Hallows have celebrated the wonderful achievements of KS3, KS4 and KS5 students in Art, Design and Technology during our annual exhibition. Work from all years was on display and provided a great opportunity to witness the talent and hard work of our young people. The entire department came together to transform the ADT rooms into a colourful exhibition space worthy of our young artists and designers, displaying the wide range of themes and techniques that students experience from Year 7 through to Year 13. Showing fantastic collaboration and determination, students from KS3, KS4 & KS5 have come together to present their work to a high standard in order to highlight their achievements this year and reflect on their creative journeys so far.

Staff and students have had the opportunity to visit the exhibition which was again catered for with delicious nibbles and cakes by our scrumptious Food Technology colleagues. For students it has been a great opportunity to see their work displayed alongside work from other years, providing inspiration and a fantastic insight for those thinking about choosing GCSE Art, Textiles or Product Design as part of their options. Additionally students working through or completing their GCSE or A Level courses have had an opportunity to reflect on their progress and enjoy the successes of their coursework and exam projects. It has been wonderful as the teachers of these students to see the pride that they take in their achievements and hard work and appreciate the individual creative processes and journeys of individual students.

In KS3 we have been able to celebrate wonderful achievement by our entire cohort who have tackled themes such as recycling and ‘The Great Pacific Garbage Dump’, meditative Mandala designs and personalised Bag Tags through a wide range of techniques and mediums such as Sublimation printing onto plastic, 3D printing using one of our 2 3d printers, Batik, embroidery and 3D manipulation as well as focussing on essential drawing skills, perspective and colour theory. GCSE students have displayed a fantastic array of techniques and skills developed through the themes of ‘Self Portraits, ‘Man Vs Machine’ and ‘60’s Floral design’. The high quality outcomes and variety of ideas and imagination demonstrates the creativity and hard ork of our students and is our chance to show them how oud we are of their achievements. Special thanks must go our group of Year 13 Fine Art Students who stepped in at e last minute to display the Fine Art GCSE and A Level ork. Their hard work and skilful approach ensured that this ork was shown off beautifully and looked stunning! Well one to all our students and we look forward to showcasing ore wonderful work next year!

DIOCESAN YOUTH MASS

On Wednesday 08 July 2015 eight All Hallows Catholic College students (from across year groups) represented the College at the Youth Diocesan Bishop’s Mass at St Nicholas Catholic High School, Northwich. The hosts of the day provided the young people with an inspiring liturgy Where students from schools across the Diocese were represented and took part; from the welcome, choir, readings and prayers. The theme of the day of Vocations was initially introduced through a modern adaptation of Jesus sending the confused disciples on their first mission.

Bishop Mark gave a succinct but unswerving homily on the role God plays in all our lives. He reflected the purpose God gives each of us through our lives; without which we would be rudderless. Here our students will have recognised the clear message included in our own College values. Bishop Mark recognised that today, more than ever, this sense of purpose is being eroded for an increasing number of youngsters. Yet, for those with God in their life they have direction; a direction we each must discern for ourselves. He also recognised the potential threat to faith schools which currently exists in our society. Helpfully, he highlighted, for our young people, the great treasures it has provided to the poorest of peoples through the centuries.

Directly following the Mass the Bishop invited all students in their school groups to allow him to greet them personally. Our students showed fantastic respect and that they had been listening attentively through their confident reaction to his homily. In particular Ben Wardle (Year 10) asked some stimulating questions, by which Bishop Mark was clearly impressed.

The students then had the chance to work with students from across the Diocese on workshops ranging from creating prayer spaces to CAFOD. They all saw this as an enriching experience and were keen to attend again in the future.

It really was a fantastic opportunity to share an inspiring and fulfilling experience with our wider community in Christ. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our hosts for this rewarding experience.

STUDENTS MEET WORLD CHAMPION BOXER The World Champion boxer Amir Khan with prize winner Amy Wild accompanied by fellow writers Meghan Scragg, Joseph France, Patrick Braun, Archie Barton.

All Hallows students were invited to celebrate their creativity with an invitation to meet the legendary boxer Amir Khan and the Poet Laureate Dame Carol Ann Duffy on 29 June. Students and staff at the ‘Outstanding’ College were praised for their long term support for the Mother Tongue Other Tongue project which was created by Dame Carol Ann Duffy to promote cultural diversity and the many languages spoken in schools in the UK. Mr Power who is the writer in residence working at All Hallows said ‘the students have grown in confidence and shared a very important part of their culture.‘ All Hallows provides languages classes at the local primary schools and was delighted that Abbie Hickson from St Benedict’s was chosen as the winner of the North West Primary Category. This year All Hallows decided to invite students from St Benedict’s, St Mary's, St Alban's, St John's and St Paul's to enter the competition and Dame Carol Ann Duffy said she was ‘impressed with the range of languages and skills the students displayed’.

On Thursday 11 June at around 11.30.p.m. 32 students from Year 7, 8, and 9 accompanied by Mr Deay, Miss Easter, Mrs Coates and Miss Crépel, set off for a whirlwind tour of Normandy. We travelled by coach down to Dover and caught the 8.00.a.m. ferry to Calais. We were greeted by glorious sunshine in France and decided to make a stop off at Cité Europe where students had their first attempt at speaking French to real French people! The café owner was very impressed with their efforts and the students certainly enjoyed their hot drinks and croissants after the long journey!

We continued our journey towards our final destination of Port-en-Bessin; a sleepy French fishing village situated in the heart of Normandy. On the first evening we had a hearty French meal and took a short walk to the port, but an early night was in order after a 15 hour bus ride.

The next day we had coffee and croissants to set us up for the day and made the journey into Bayeux and headed straight to the market. The students were given a shopping list and had to use their French skills to buy the items on the list. All students were highly successful in their quest and returned not only with some delicious local fayre, but also a wonderful sense of achievement after purposely using their French in an authentic setting.

We then visited the Bayeux tapestry where we had an audioguided tour of the tapestry. It was a very engaging visit; the story of the Norman invasion is truly brought to life by the detailed and well preserved illustrations.

After lunch, we visited the impressive Gothic cathedral and then went to the British Cemetery. Here students were tasked with finding the graves of soldiers from the Cheshire East area who gave their lives in the Great War. It was a truly humbling visit, made all the more real by finding the graves of people not too much older than the students themselves. We had a small reflection on our findings and experience in the cemetery and students shared many profound thoughts and findings; it was a true privilege to share this with the students.

By this time, the sun was beating down on us – there was nothing else to do but take a seat in a café and enjoy the peace and quiet that Bayeux offers.

On Sunday we visited the Caen Peace Museum where students were given the opportunity to learn about both World Wars through authentic materials. In the afternoon we visited la Chèvrerie du Mesnil, a farm that produces goat’s cheese. We had a tour of the farm, made acquaintance with some very friendly goats and had a cheese tasting; the cheese varied from soft and light to hard and smelly!

After this, we stopped off at Utah beach, the westernmost of the landing beaches. Here we enjoyed the sunshine and some ice cream; we tried hard to get to the water but the tide had retreated almost as far back as Dover!

On Monday we returned to the bus and started our return journey back to England; goat’s cheese firmly in the hold so the smells didn’t keep us awake!

YEAR 12 WORK EXPERIENCE WEEK ASHLEY LAWSON

MONDAY

HI I’M ASHLEY, I AM 17 YEARS OLD AND I’M AN ALEVEL STUDENT AT ALL HALLOWS. I ENJOY HANGING OUT WITH FRIENDS AND LISTENING TO MUSIC.

On Monday 13 July – Friday 17 July I was given the opportunity to work with the associate members of staff at All Hallows Catholic College. This involved working in the Romero Centre, Finance Office, Print Shop, Reception and in IT Support. Throughout the week, I was given many different opportunities for which I would like to take the time to thank the different members of staff who helped me throughout the week

TUESDAY

This morning I took control of set up for a larger number of delegates whose requirements included hospitality. The Romero Centre was busy which meant I was always on my feet greeting new delegates and making sure everyone was okay. Earlier in the morning I was asked to be a part of the photography and Aspire design team. I was excited to become more knowledgeable on the running of a business. As a student I didn’t realise how much work went into running a College and the internal businesses.

WEDNESDAY Today I have helped to design and make the Aspire magazine. This has taught me how much work goes into making articles and how difficult designing the Aspire Magazine can be. I have also assisted in setting up for conferences. I also had the opportunity to take pictures at a school fund raising activity

THURSDAY Throughout today I have helped in the Print Shop helping to prepare banners, continuing to help with the Aspire magazine. I was involved with all areas of the printing process, it was very repetitive but very rewarding. I also assisted the finance office with banking following yesterday’s fundraiser.

FRIDAY Today I have been editing more pages for the Aspire, also I have helped out photographing students who have just been confirmed. I am really enjoying editing the Aspire magazine and the people who also edit it are very friendly and have helped me learn new tricks to make editing easier and faster. I have really enjoyed my time doing work experience in All Hallows and I am thankful to all the staff who helped me during the week.

It has helped me better my editing skills and I now have a better understanding of how a business runs.

WEEK IN THE SHOES OF COLLEGE STAFF DAN HULME MONDAY

For my work experience I worked within the Music Department helping members of staff with their day to day tasks. This included helping with student teaching inside classes and even Mr Richardson’s endless amount of sheet music. I also assisted with Mr Andrew’s and Miss Elliot’s lesson for the Year 7 and 8’s. I found that they are very eager to learn! The rest of the day I spent helping the Year 10 on their compositions which I found to be very interesting and fun! Safe to say this week isn't going to be ordinary

Tuesday’s work load included assisting Mr Richardson search for the music for his Jazz/Swing band. I also ended up writing parts for the band myself. I enjoyed today, listening to all types of music ALL HALLOWS WANTS TO WISH DAN HULME A VERY HAPPY 17TH BIRTHDAY! Today was my 17th Birthday and as unhappy as I was to be at work on such a sunny day I was happy to spend it with the Music Department. I ran important errands and manage to complete all my tasks. The staff wished me Happy Birthday and got me in high spirits. The rest of my day included helping students learning basic piano and teaching

THURSDAY This morning I had the opportunity to assist in Mr I’M Andrew’s classes. This involved me handing out DAN, the students work sheets and helping some I AM students if they needed guiding through the music 17 lesson. I also had the job of making sure the students left the classroom tidy for the next lesson or day’s use. Sometimes however they wouldn't and I had to clear up after them!

I also had to run some important errands for Mr Richardson again such as photocopying next lesson’s music and worksheets.

FRIDAY Today is my final day doing my work experience with All Hallows Catholic College. Today I helped in Mr Andrew’s classes again, ensuring that the lessons ran smoothly and I would help with students and errands where needed. My time as a work experience student has been fulfilling , it has helped me develop my communication skills and also my organisational skills a lot!

CHESHIRE AND WARRINGTON SUMMER SCHOOL GAMES 2015 Congratulations to both the table tennis and Quad Kids (Athletics) teams who recently qualified to represent Macclesfield in the recent County Games festival at Macclesfield Leisure Centre on Wednesday 8 July.

Both teams did extremely well. The Table Tennis team were victorious, unbeaten and were crowned County Champions!
