A warm welcome to prospective students and their parents to our Sixth Form Prospectus.

This will provide an opportunity to start reflecting on the opportunities post- GCSE All Hallows can offer. The aim is to help students make informed choices and find out about what they can both give and receive from life and study in our ‘Outstanding’ Sixth Form. There is something for everyone since we offer both A Level and Technical Vocational courses, with all students able to benefit from a mature learning environment combined with the familiar strong pastoral care and community life of All Hallows College.

There is a real buzz about life in our Sixth Form. This comes from a sense of pride in academic achievement, personal development and social enterprise for the good of others. Welcome...

I am delighted that you are considering studying at All Hallows Sixth form. Our aim is to provide for the educational needs of all our students in a Catholic environment; we are committed to a community based on mutual respect where we recognise our responsibilities to ourselves and others.

At All Hallows’ we want our students to complete their courses successfully whilst at the same time developing into intelligent, independent and confident young people with wide-ranging interests and high aspirations. Our excellent teaching enables students to achieve academic success, and the individual pastoral support and guidance we provide, encourages them to develop personally, socially and spiritually.

Level 2 Technical & Vocational Programme

All Hallows Sixth Form provides a variety of opportunities for post 16 studies.

ADVANCED COURSES

Advanced courses, including A levels, AS levels and BTEC’s (Level 3), are the main routes into higher education and higher apprenticeships and employment. These are full-time two-year courses.

Entry requirements for Advanced level study are a minimum of five GCSE’s A* - C including English & Maths.

Most students will choose four subjects to study from the A/AS level courses on offer or a combination of A/ AS level courses and Level 3 BTEC’s. AS qualifications are stand alone qualifications to be completed after the first year of study. Students then choose to continue to A Level in 3 subjects for the following year.

Level 2 Courses Students who have not achieved a grade C in English or Maths have the opportunity to repeat these courses alongside a variety of Level 2 courses.

Macclesfield Football Academy September 2015 saw the launch of our Football Academy, providing an opportunity for students to combine their academic programme of studies with training as part of the Macclesfield Football

The level 2 programme has been specially designed for those students who enjoy a more “hands on” approach to learning and have a keen interest in working in people focused industries. Students will study two level 2 qualifications as well as attend Maths and English lessons if they need to re-sit their GCSE. The programme of study gives learners the opportunity to enter employment in the related occupational sector or to progress onto level 3 courses whilst developing a range of academic and practical skills.

Students will have the option of studying a selection of the following qualifications:BTEC Level 2 Business BTEC Level 2 Children’s Play, Learning & Development BTEC Level 2 Hospitality & Catering BTEC Level 2 Travel & Tourism BTEC Level 2 Animal Management BTEC Level 2 Sport ECDL level 2 Computing Students will be assessed both practically and through assignment work, which will be graded to pass, merit or distinction level. A range of assessment methods will be used including practical activities, written and pictorial evidence. The course is assessed internally and externally with terminal exams. As is expected of all employees in a vocational career, strict rules and regulations relating to professional ethics, uniform, hygiene, health and safety, must be adhered to. For some subjects such as Hospitality, this will involve wearing a uniform, presenting a professional image

As a Catholic College, we continue to build upon the spiritual experiences of the students, not only in offering them a deeper insight into their own faith but also by encouraging them to take a greater role in the community. We believe our sense of values help the students to put into perspective the increasing pressures that society puts upon them. With this in mind, all Sixth Form students follow a programme of General R.E. Year 12 and 13 able students are entered for AS/A Level General Studies and may choose to engage in the EPQ. The results provide many students with the additional UCAS points needed to secure a place at university and enable them to demonstrate independent study skills.

Animal Management BTEC Level 3 Overview

Animal Management at All Hallows offers students an opportunity to learn through practice. The course covers a wide range of the animal care industry and looks into the theory behind animal care as well as learning the essential hands on skills required to work with animals.

Students will study seven modules which link to all aspects of Animal Management including promoting Animal Health, Animal Handling, Animal behaviour and Communication and Exotic Animal Health. Each unit will be assessed internally and verified by moderators. Students will learn through a variety of opportunities inside and outside the classroom including visits to animal collections, shows and conservation sites. Students are encouraged to put their learning into practice and gain additional experience with the animals outside of lessons

Entry Requirements 5 GCSE’s A* - C or equivalent

If your aim is to work in the animal industry or areas of Biology this course provides a perfect route to either a degree course, an apprenticeships or directly into work.

Art, Craft and Design—Textiles —AS / A Level Overview

The course commences with a focus on basic skills and techniques and quickly builds to encompass a mixed media approach. Students work mainly in sketchbooks and develop work in a variety of Textile and Three dimensional materials for the Portfolio of evidence.

Following the Art, Craft & Design course allows students to produce work and final outcomes in a variety of materials and forms including Textiles, Printing and dying, Sculpture and Three Dimensional Design. There are a series of lesson based workshops in which students learn a range of new skills.

Students are encouraged to develop an individual and personalised approach to their studies.

Progress is monitored and supported through regular tutorials.

Students and staff agree challenging targets and areas for development.

Students are encouraged to visit appropriate exhibitions to supplement their studies and the department provides a range of off site learning opportunities including gallery visits (London, Tate Modern) and Museums (V&A, British Museum)

Following the Fine Art course allows students to produce work and final outcomes in a variety of materials and forms including Painting, Sculpture, Textiles, Printmaking, Digital Photography and Video. There are a series of lesson based workshops in which students learn a range of new skills.

Students are encouraged to develop an individual and personalised approach to their studies.

Progress is monitored and supported through regular tutorials. Students and staff agree challenging targets and areas for development.

Students are encouraged to visit appropriate exhibitions to supplement their studies and the department provides a range of off-site learning opportunities through gallery visits to London (Tate Modern, Saatchi Gallery, Tate Britain) and Tate Liverpool.

Biology—AS / A Level Overview

At Biology A level, we expand the concepts introduced to pupils at GCSE, whilst adding a range of fascinating new ones. Biology is one of the most multifaceted academic subjects, covering topics from the molecules which make up our bodies to the future of our entire planet. Discoveries in Biology have, and continue to give rise to innovations which protect, preserve and enhance plant, animal and human life.

Whilst Biology is a challenging discipline, our department has a high retention rate at A level, and a high success rate in terms of grades and destinations; with many students taking Biology related subjects in Higher education, such as Ecology, Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, Physiotherapy, Radiography, zoology and others.

Entry Requirements 5 GCSE’s A* - C including English and Maths Although B grades are preferable in both core and additional science, students with C grade’s will be considered.

Business BTEC Level 3 Diploma / Subsidiary Diploma Overview

The Subsidiary Diploma and Diploma are high quality, industry-recognised qualifications geared to the specific requirements of the Business Sector. At Level 3 it has been accredited by QCA to the National Qualification Framework to be equivalent to A Levels. It is delivered as a two year programme, to provide a qualification at Pass, Merit or Distinction. The Subsidiary Diploma is equivalent to 1A Level and The Diploma is equivalent to 2 A Levels.

How is the Award/Certificate structured?

Chemistry AS / A Level Overview

A level Chemistry is a rigorous, challenging and ultimately rewarding course that develops students' scientific skills and knowledge. The course has been split into three sections; physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry and organic chemistry. Each section begins with an overview, which puts the topic into a broader chemical context and encourages understanding of the place of each topic within the subject.

Design and Technology Product Design AS / A Level Overview

The Product Design course starts with a focus on the product study and building drawing and modelling skills in preparation for the innovation challenge. On this course students are expected to respond to briefs with innovation and original thought which is both challenging and exciting for the students. They will develop and show their skills of design through drawing, modelling and evaluating in all 4 components/units of the course. Drawing will take many forms from quick sketches, to more formal technical drawings and exploded diagrams.

Modelling will use a range of materials and techniques dependent upon the student’s choice of study. In the product study students will commence with an in-depth analysis of a product of their choice followed by their redesign of it; either in whole or part; taking an objective evaluation and review of the process as it transpires. Students complete 4 units: The Innovation Challenge (design challenge assessing candidates’ ability to design and model a product and then reflect on their design concept) ; Product Study (students re-design a product of their choice); Product Design and Make (self-directed design and make project) and a Written Exam.

Entry Requirements 5 GCSE's A* - C Including English Language and D&T Product Design A B grade in D&T is preferable. Students with a grade C will be considered.

Students work is celebrated though an end-of year exhibition which gives students an experience of Art and Design practise in the real world.

Dance AS / A Level Overview

The Dance course allows students to develop their skills, technique and choreographic ability through a range of units; both theoretical and practical.

Throughout the course (AS 1 year, A Level 2 years), students will work both independently and as part of a small dance company to choreograph and perform dances, building on your physical and expressive dance skills, and ability to compose dances in response to a stimulus.

Theoretically, students are expected to progress in their ability to appreciate and understand a range of set works, expanding on their written articulation of ideas. Furthermore, students will cover safe dance practice units, such as healthy diet, anatomy and physiology and injury prevention.

The dance course is very demanding, both physically and intellectually, and there is an expectation for students to challenge their creativity. Students are required to engage with theatre visits and performances to build on their learning experiences.

Students are encouraged to audition for All Hallows’ in-house dance company, Inspire.

Dance is a creative and expressive subject to study.

Students are able to develop their confidence, motivation and dedication, which are desirable attributes for progression onto higher education or employment.

English Literature AS / A Level Overview

This course is designed for those who already have an interest in Literature and who wish to develop their basic knowledge and understanding by studying a wide range of literary material. Reading is clearly a very important part of any Literature course, so anyone who chooses this subject must already enjoy reading and have a genuine desire to learn more about books and writers.

Year 12 has the over-arching theme of ‘Love Through the Ages’. Students will study all forms of Literature (novels, short stories, poems and plays) drawn from all periods of English Literature. Since one of the aims of the course is to set literary works within the context of the age in which they were written, they will also learn something of the historical background of texts ranging from Thomas Wyatt (written about 500 hundred years ago) to those written very recently. Students will be introduced to the familiar 'greats' of English Literature (Shakespeare, Keats, Bronte and so on), as well as to writers they may not have heard of, but who are in many ways just as challenging. All in all, they will be required to study about four texts in their first year in detail, though they will have the opportunity to experience many others in a more general way.

This popular course has proved to be highly successful at All Hallows. Journalists, politicians, lawyers, actors, educationalists, those working in the media and communications industries plus many others, have all benefited from a grounding in English Literature.

English Language AS / A Level Overview

We begin the course by teaching the core linguistic terms students need before beginning to look at other more specific topics. The aim is to bridge the gap from GCSE study and move students towards a more technical approach to studying language.

During the first year the topics explored include how language varies according to gender, the social groups people are part of and their occupation. We also study the differences in accent and dialect across the British Isles. The second year modules include child language acquisition and the evolution of English into a global language.

There are opportunities for students to analyse a wide range of texts, including literary and multi-media texts such as chat room conversations. Students are expected to collect their own data for analysis, transcribe conversations, work together and deliver presentations, giving them the skills they will need at higher education.

In addition to analysing the language of others there is also a creative writing element to the course where students work on developing their own skills as writers in a number of genres and styles. Students are encouraged to read widely to develop their appreciation of different writers’ techniques.

Entry Requirements 5 GCSEs A*-C Including English Language and Literature.

Health & Social Care BTEC Level 3 Overview

The health and social care sector employs some of the most talented and clever people the country have to offer. The NHS, as the main employer, has a continual need for doctors, nurses, ambulance staff and support staff, and there are further opportunities to work for the NHS in social care in hospitals, educational settings and residential homes.

A BTEC in Health and Social Care offers a practical and relevant start to any young person interested in a career in the caring professions.

This qualification can lead to a wide variety of career areas, including Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Chiropody, Social and Community work, Care Homes and Counselling.

It’s time to inspire learners to enter the caring professions. The BTECs in Health and Social Care are designed to do just that.

History AS / A Level Overview

A-level History follows the AQA specification. Both the Unit 1 breadth study and Unit 2 depth study will be covered across year 12 and 13. The breadth study students cover the USA between 1865 and 1975 and explain how the USA became a superpower.

The Depth study students cover Post War Britain from 1951 to 2007 which explains the making of modern Britain. This option provides the opportunity to study a period of major change in depth, focusing on key ideas, events and developments. In the final term of year 12 students complete their coursework on Irish Nationalism during the Nineteenth Century analysing the key events of the era such as the Famine, Home Rule Bills and the Easter Rising and evaluate their impact on Anglo-Irish relations.

Apart from being very interesting, the study of History is also very useful. You will be able to understand what motivates people, what makes them act in the way that they do and gain a thorough understanding of the world around you.

You will be able to gather information, interpret and analyse it.

Entry Requirements 5 GCSEs A* - C, Including English Language.

Studying GCSE History, of itself, is not a requirement for this course.

Hospitality & Catering Management BTEC Level 2 Overview

The course commences with a focus on basic culinary skills and techniques which quickly develop to acquiring skills to enable students to make high quality nutritious dishes. Over the year of study, students will develop knowledge and understanding of how the catering and hospitality industry operates and why it is one of the largest employers in the world. It is essential that students embrace the customer experience and understand how to meet and exceed customer expectations. Regular educational trips will take place to local establishments such as table d’hote, a la carte, family dining, banquet service, food court service and fine dining experiences offering gueridon and silver service. Students will be expected to wear the appropriate uniform for practical lessons to adhere to industry standards, customer expectations as well as food hygiene and safety regulations.

An overseas trip to France will delight the taste buds with its flamboyant market stalls selling locally produced fruit, vegetables, flowers, cheese and meat to the famous patisseries and chocolatiers found in almost every sleepy little French town. The trip will then take in the famous champagne region where the strict legislation relating to Champagne production will be explored.

Entry Requirements There are no specific entry requirements.

It is desirable to have previous knowledge and experience of the catering industry although not essential.

A successful business is only as successful as the staff that it employs. Students will have the opportunity to plan and run their own events and put human resource theory into practise. Events will usually be College based and incorporate roles such as food and beverage manager, head chef and head waiter.

Assessment on this vocational course is predominantly through coursework which must adhere to strict hand in deadlines and plagiarism legislation. Through regular monitoring and individual tutorials students can create their own individualised learning plan to help them reach and hopefully exceed their targets. Languages AS / A Level Overview

Languages offered at All Hallows A Level: French, Spanish, German and Mandarin.

The course is designed to give you a profound understanding of your chosen language. You will study topics which are relevant to young people and learn how to express your opinions on them. Mathematics AS / A Level Overview

A-level Maths provides students with a thorough grounding in the mathematical tools and techniques often needed in the workplace. The logic and reasoning skills developed by studying A-level Maths make sure the qualification is widely respected even in non-mathematical arenas.

A-level Maths is made up of six units – three at AS and three at A2. All units are available in the June series. There are four Pure Core units which make up two-thirds of the qualification and provide the techniques in Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and Calculus that form the fundamental building blocks of the subject.

Further Mathematics AS / A Level Overview

A-level Further Mathematics is designed to broaden and deepen the mathematical knowledge and skills developed when studying A-level Mathematics. It may be studied alongside or after taking A-Level Mathematics and provides a stimulating experience for those who enjoy the subject.

A-level Further Mathematics is made up of six units. Many combinations of units are allowed for AS and A-level Further Mathematics. There are four Further Pure units available and any of the applied units listed for A-Level Mathematics may be used towards A-level Further Mathematics. There are additional Statistics and Mechanics units available only for Further Mathematics.

Music AS / A Level Overview

The study of music a versatile and well-respected subject by all universities. Whether you choose to study this with a view to a career in music, or as a complimentary A-Level; it offers the opportunity to develop a range of skills from analysis and composition to self-confidence and self-expression. Music is often paired with Sciences and Mathematics as a sound route into Engineering, Medicine or Media.

Composing Music allows you to develop your skills as a composer.

You can write for any combination of instruments in any style of music. Students will be required to write to a set brief and submit a free composition. We have both Sibelius 7 and Logic X Software for students to use.

Performing Music allows you to develop confidence and virtuosity as a performer. Students are required to perform an extended programme of music which showcases your talents as a performer either with an ensemble, as a solo artist or a mixture of both disciplines. Music Technology AS / A Level Overview

Music Technology covers all aspects of creative studio work including stereo ambient recording, multi-track recording, electro-acoustic music, arranging, studio engineering, producing and composition for film. The aim of the department is to foster creativity and skill in the use of the latest technology and to equip pupils with up-to-date knowledge for their future work in the studio-music environment.

Music Technology is taught at AS and A2 Level following the Edexcel syllabus and pupils are encouraged to work well beyond the briefs and limits set by the board. All students have access to a dedicated 6th form music room throughout the day for their individual work.

Theatre Studies is a rewarding, engaging and demanding subject but if you are passionate about Drama, Literature and Performance then this subject is for you.

Theatre allows us to explore the world around us.

The course demands a physical level of fitness and ability as we will study practitioners such as Berkoff, Frantic Assembly and Push. Academically we require that you have gained at least a C grade in GCSE English Literature.

This course combines hard work with improvisation, interpretation and lots of fun.

Studying theatre can increase self-esteem, and confidence. It helps develop personal qualities like public speaking and team working. These are transferable skills useful in many career paths such as politics, media and even medicine.

This course will take you on a journey through everything that makes the theatre great – from understanding texts through to set, lighting and costume design and, of course, performance techniques.
