Specialism Success On Thursday 26 September the whole College celebrated European Day of Languages. Various activities took place throughout the day including a word treasure hunt involving all year 7 and 8 students, with colleagues delivering all or part of their lessons in another language. In addition to this, ten year 12 students visited Parkroyal Primary school and taught the Primary students some basic Spanish and German phrases. Many thanks to all involved. PARENTS AS PARTNERS: End of the College day For several years we have had an arrangement with a local secondary school that students of each school should not congregate by the other school at the end of the day. This arrangement enables both sets of students to leave their school without any possible incident or fear of intimidation. We ask your support that our students do not arrange to meet students from any other school near our exits and instead they meet their friends away from the college.

The average for the week is 94.5% (down from 94.8% last week). Since 3rd September attendance has been 95.9%. We aim for 97%. Parents/carers are politely reminded to avoid absence unless it is absolutely necessary. Holidays will not be authorised from 1st September 2013 under new legislation on all English schools. Requests for holidays must still be made in writing to the appropriate Key Stage leader (Mrs Garvey KS5, Mr Blades KS4 and Mr Diamond KS3), but in the vast majority of cases they will be unauthorised. Medical absence will continue to require medical proof and appointments should be made, where possible, outside of the College day. Please consider whether a whole day of absence is absolutely necessary for medical appointments, or whether part of the can day be missed instead. The link between attendance and achievement is well researched and documented and students should be aiming for an attendance rate of no less than 97% over the year. Thank you for your continued support with this important issue.

E-Safety It has been reported (NSPCC) that almost one in five youngsters who use social networking sites have had a bad experience, including bullying and online stalking, in the past year. 11 to 16-year-olds said they had also been subjected to unwanted sexual messages and been made to feel like they have to look a certain way on sites such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. What can you do as a parent? · Keep the computer in a busy area of your house so you can easily monitor its use, rather than allowing your child to use a laptop or tablet in his or her bedroom, for example. · Limit data access to your child's smart phone if he or she uses it to surf the web. Some wireless providers allow you to turn off text messaging services during certain hours. · Set up filters on your child's computer. Tracking software can block inappropriate web content and help you check up on your child's online activities. · Learn the common acronyms children use online and in text messages, such as POS - Parent Over Shoulder. · Know who your child communicates with online. Go over your child's address book and instant messenger "buddy list" with them. Ask who each person is and how your child knows them. · Encourage your child to tell you or another trusted adult if they receive threatening messages or are otherwise targeted by cyber bullies, while reassuring them that doing so will not result in their loss of computer or cell phone privileges.
