ALL HALLOWS PREPARES FOR THE ADVENT OF JESUS

Throughout December we have been preparing our hearts and minds for the celebration of Christ’s incarnation. Both staff and students reflected on the preparation and patient waiting needed in Advent, and how this season could help us to renew or further our faith.

Traditionally Advent has been a time of quiet introspection and personal examination and this certainly rang true at All Hallows. Our Advent started with a meditative service for all the year groups, a time to contemplate on the events happening around us in the world and prepare in our hearts a way for the Lord. Led by Mrs Garvey and Rev Harrison, we were guided in our thoughts, inspired in prayer and, assisted by the Liturgical Music form, who sang hymns of joy and expectation of the coming of Christ.

Later in December, students, staff, parents and the wider community were given the opportunity to join together in a service of Lessons, Carols and Meditations in St Albans Church in Macclesfield.

Following a traditional format we were reminded of the Christmas story, starting with the lowly cattle shed and finishing with John writing in his gospel of Jesus Christ, not as a mediating principle, but as a personal being, fully divine, yet fully human. We also heard in the last reading the verse: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

A perhaps topical final sentiment to take with us leaving the church, having been reminded during the service of God’s love for us and how we should strive to discover God in all things.

On the final Wednesday of term, the whole staff joined together in collective worship remembering the Christmas messages of Peace, Hope and Love, and repeating the readings and carols read and sung the previous Thursday. Although without the student involvement this time, the atmosphere created enabled many to round off the term with a thoughtful and contemplative service in our own chapel at All Hallows.

10 students from the Lower Sixth Form went on retreat to The Briars Retreat Centre in Matlock, Derbyshire.

Many of us had been on previous retreats through All Hallows, however the retreat at The Briars was the first retreat where activities and days were spent with two other schools. The chance to interact with other students from different parts of the country and from different schools, who were also passionate about their faith, gave us the opportunity to make new friends. James Musgrave said the retreat was a “Fun few days getting closer to people and making new friends”. At the retreat, we engaged in both faith and nonfaith based activities helping to share views and opinions on certain topics as well as getting to know the people who were on retreat with us. Joe Gillian said “Fantastic time spent with great people and I learnt a lot about myself and others”. The retreat was also an opportunity for students to share their talents, and on the last night, the All Hallows students dressed up in their suits and performed a variety of songs and showed off their incredible musical talents, with their renditions of Wonderwall and Don’t Look Back in Anger by Oasis, then a special appearance from Reverend Harrison led to the performance of 500 miles by The Proclaimers, which went down well with all the students! After 3 brilliant days in a beautiful place with wonderful staff, it seemed as though no one wanted the end to come; Ben Forse said that the retreat left a, “Real sense of meaning and happiness” and George Wilkinson said it was an “Amazing few days with some incredible people; loved it all”. As many retreats do, everyone left with a great happiness and joy and with some new friends. Luke Chapman said it was a, “Brilliant experience; the staff were great and I thoroughly enjoyed the retreat”, James Robins said it was, “An amazing place, amazing people and an amazing experience”, and Jack Lisle said “Really enjoyed spending some quality time with my close friends and making new ones at the same time”. The retreat to the Briars was a chance to spend time away and get to know yourself as well as getting to know some old friends and make some new ones.

CASTLERIGG MANOR The Year 10 retreat was held between 7-11th December 2015. A group of students went to Castlerigg Manor in Keswick.

There was much excitement on the day of departure due to the weather condition and flooding in and around Keswick. On arrival we were delighted to find Castlerigg Manor was unaffected by the flooding however there were many swollen rivers and flooded fields on the way.

All Hallows was the only school staying and there was plenty of room in the recently renovated reception rooms and bed rooms. We were met by an enthusiastic team who stayed with us throughout our stay. There was a great Christmas atmosphere and good fun. The accommodation and food was excellent and all the staff were lovely.

We stayed in different rooms, boys one side girls the other. We did a lot of different activities indoor and outdoor.

I liked all the actives on retreat because they inspired me to work with other people, which I did, they looked out for me and cared for me The activities were designed to allow everyone to consider their own faith and the opinion of others, and consider the difficulties other people may be facing in the world. There was a particular game which focused on the difficulties people have who are trying to enter the UK. There was a focus on love and the Christmas message.

It was not all work, there were many games including a race on giant space hoppers and dressing up game and of course the Karaoke. “I was asked to sing even though I did not want to and I am glad I did it�. There were group activities that relied on team work and craft activities that contributed to the mass at the end of the week.

Every day we went out for a walk in the surrounding area, the weather was dreadful and there were a lot of fallen trees and 05

running water. We were very wet after a walk to Derwentwater where the wind and rain was blowing at full force horizontally, everyone had a great time!

“We went into Keswick town centre and had a look round” the views were fantastic on the walk to the town.

“One of the highlights of the week was the visits to the chapel, it was a lovely peaceful space that allowed everyone to be still and to think and meditate.” It connected all the daily activities and helped us to focus and have some time for ourselves.

On the last day we spent some time completing our diary, everyone had to make a comment in all of them, I was amazed what people said and I will keep it and look back at it in the future. This was an excellent few days and I would recommend other people to go when they are given the opportunity.

Thank you to everyone who went for the smiling faces despite the weather and thanks to Rev Harrison and Mrs Remfry for taking us.

Awards Evening What better way is there to mark the end of a busy term than by bringing together former students and their parents to celebrate their achievements? Each year the College celebrates the successes of both current and former students with the formal presentation of Awards and Certificates. The evening provides an opportunity for parents to sit back and proudly acknowledge the hard work of both student, the College and parent! In helping their children to complete another key stage in their learning. Both A Level and GCSE students received formal validation of their exams with special awards given to those students who were the highest achievers in each A Level or BTEC subject. Special Awards were also made to students who had achieved The Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award. The College acknowledged the contribution of students to Sports and Catholic Social Enterprise.

Entertainment for the evening was provided by students Josh Mock, Kayleigh Chadwick, Dan Hulme, Alex Hartley, Sasha Brown, Hannah Bayliss and Alice King. Our inspirational speakers were former students Mr Jonathan Hamlin BSc; PGCE and Mr Thomas Agar Director of Nexus Dry Hire.

On Thursday 7th January, Rebecca Adlington visited St John The Evangelist Primary School in Macclesfield. Last year the school sports ambassadors (seen in the picture below) entered a video competition to show the work they do. Out of the whole competition we came second and the prize was this visit.

FORMER ST JOHN’S STUDENTS ARE WINNERS

The visit began by Rebecca greeting the children as they came in to the assembly hall, she than showed a presentation to the students of her swimming career. Rebecca spoke inspirationally about pursuing dreams and persevering.

During the presentation Rebecca answered some very interesting questions asked by the St Johns students about swimming and her career before finalising the visit by visiting all the students in their classrooms to show them her medals and achievements. The students were inspired by the whole event and we thank the Sports Ambassadors and Rebecca for making this a special day.

Steve Murray and the Soli Team The students in year 7 enjoyed a fantastic Faith Day 2016. The day was split into two halves packed with interactive tasks for the students to engage in. All were entertained by Steve Murray, a mime artist who also reminded the students how each and every one of us is special and a gift from God. Steve also encouraged all to use our gifts and talents every day. The students laughed at the facial expressions of Steve, and were thoroughly involved throughout. The second half of the day was led by the Soli team, who, in line with the Year of Mercy, encouraged all to open up our hearts to forgive one another and repair fractured relationships. Students discussed how even super heroes such as Batman would rescue the villains in films, as all deserve forgiveness and the opportunity to put things right. Students engaged in a number of team building activities, and were given the mission to try to mend broken friendships and right personal wrongs. Well done to all, as this was a truly memorable day and our core values here at All Hallows Catholic College were certainly tangible.

All Hallows hosted our annual Faith day in which each child spends a day reflecting, showing thanks and being merciful in order to show our compassion as a community and love towards God. This year each form in year 8 was given a group, 1 or 2, in group 1 our over ruling topic was mercy due to the fact that this year is going to be the year of mercy as said by Pope Francis. To start off our holy day we were told to look through some news papers and try to find a particularly happy story and, although the news papers they gave us were Catholic papers, it was surprising to find so many happy stories floating around the world considering that all the top stories, in the top selling papers are usually sad crises. Afterwards we, in our small groups, were asked to share what we had found with the rest of the class and although there were lots of different groups each one had found a completely different, happy story.

After this, in our groups we were asked to write down on a big piece of A3 paper a recipe for a particularly merciful cake. Everyone made a marvellous effort and part of one of the end results read “add a cup of love and a teaspoon of hugs then stir for a mixture of righteousness sauce”.

After a relaxing break time our task was to go back to our form rooms and on another big A3 piece of paper we were to draw someone we knew, or knew about, who we thought were a face of mercy.

Around what should be our beautiful drawing we were to write words that explain why we think this person is so humble and merciful.

Our final and probably most enjoyable activity was to make a creative piece of work on mercy like: a role play or a poem. Our group came up with a particularly wonderful idea of a Take Me Out show except that the reason they were getting picked was to do with how merciful the person was. This resulted in many laughs and many embarrassed actors.

All in all I’d say that this day was very successful day and we look forward to what next year may bring.

YEAR OF MERCY Year 9 Faith Day by Alex ‘Reach For’ The faith day at All Hallows was a day of, as you may guess, faith. A religious group from The Briars, came into school and led activities within our forms. In the middle of the day, we had a service and a singalong; our ‘reward’ for being such good students was to go to lunch 2 minutes early (HOORAY!)! During this day, we played team building games and did many exercises as a team. This means that the day allowed for everyone to be entertained and we got to work with people we may not normally spend a lot of time with.

At other times in the day we had serious discussions about acts of mercy. The day allowed us to explore what it is to show and receive mercy. We focused mainly on the Corporal works of Mercy and how we can help those in need to food, shelter and compassion. At the end of the day we finished with presentations and ‘jingles’ about the act of mercy.

The activities on the day were challenging. Furthermore, the singalong we did in period 4-5 was very inclusive and everybody had fun, this was mostly because it included modern ‘boppy’ songs that everyone enjoyed! It probably would have been less fun if we had been singing hymns like ‘All that I am’ and ‘give me oil in my lamp’. The fact that the ‘lala’ game was played meant that more teambuilding happened and many people heard their favourite songs! Finally, at the end of the day, as I said before, we designed (in groups in form) our own act of mercy and a jingle with it, this was great fun and also brought more teambuilding around to finish the day.

The Leeds Diocesan Youth Team Year 10 experience during faith day gave students an opportunity to reflect on their faith journey. The day was delivered by a Christian Youth group who connected well with the students. The day was structured around a range of activities that all students were encouraged to contribute towards. Everyone experienced different workshops in their form groups which were aimed at challenging student’s concepts and contributions to their faith life in the wider world. The whole year group was encouraged to participate in a fun quiz in the hall and individual students were asked to help illustrate a story. The atmosphere amongst the students was very positive, there was a buzz around the room and everyone was engaged in the activities. This was a great opportunity for everyone to reflect on their own lives and enjoy a day of fun and reflection.

Year 11 engaged fully in a series of activities organised by their form tutors during the first morning registration session and then when we moved to the sports hall by the youth group Animate. The group got the students to answer a series of 'stand up/sit down’ questions to get them all involved. Then competing as two halves batting beach balls through the air in an attempt to have more in the opponents half as the clock ran down. The session was focussed on setting the scene for the main message of the day namely ' the Jubilee Year of Mercy' and why Pope Francis has called us to this cause.

After break, back in form rooms, break out sessions were each led by one of the Animate team. This involved moral decision making (is eating another human ever justified?), assigning the idea of being merciful to well known people from past and present i.e. Barrack Obama, David Beckham and Adolf Hitler.

The final activity in this session revolved around a real life event depicted in the film 'The Railwayman' , where a real life prisoner of war, is able to show mercy and forgiveness towards his captor.

The afternoon session saw the whole year group back in the sportshall. Challenging and thought provoking activities were led covering the students view of their faith with depictions of 'The Jeremy Kyle Show' and 'Family Fortunes' The conduct and engagement throughout the day was a credit to all the students and the well planned activities led by the Animate group.

YEAR OF MERCY The Rise Theatre group worked closely with our Sixth Form and through the day we celebrated the Jubilee Year of Mercy. It was a beautiful day. The enthusiasm and the engagement of the students was palpable.

The day began with a simple reflection on why Pope Francis called this jubilee year and together we reflected on what we understand by mercy and how we show mercy to ourselves and to others; recognising the importance of God’s mercy in our own lives.

The quote from Pope Francis “God’s forgiveness cannot be denied to anyone who has repented” was also shared and reflected upon. This led to the students recognising the impact mercy can have on our lives; something which cannot be understated. The impact mercy can have on others’ lives when we show it is immeasurable. There were many examples of Saints who have shown mercy, these were explored. For instance, a contemporary saint in Pope John Paul II was examined and the impact that the mercy he showed to his failed assassin spoke volumes.

Rise Theatre were superb! The enthusiasm, focus, energy of the three participants was outstanding.

Charley Pinfold, Steve Newbury and the aptly named John Bosco gave a contemporary play on St Alban and later on Don Bosco.

Rise Theatre engaged the audience with the actions of St Alban, the reluctant saint who subsequently allowed an illegal priest to live by taking his place. The relevance of the play, however, was far reaching; helping the students to reflect on the truth of faith and how we live this out in a world in which the willingness to share our own faith and allow others to do the same is passively if not openly denied.

Before lunch the team worked with the form groups enabling open discussion and exploring their own views on various instances seen and shared through the play. This gave a safe environment for various opinions and views to be explored and tested.

After lunch, the seemingly tireless Rise Theatre, showed a play on Don Bosco, revealing his vocation and the work he began and continues through still today in spite of his story resembling David and Goliath. As a child Don Bosco remembered that he had a dream which had told him to not be angry but allow gentleness to win over those who resisted him.

Finally the group gave each and every person a mustard seed; connecting the work through the day and their plays to Jesus’ Parable of the Mustard Seed. Through his story, the students were challenged with allowing God to transform their own story into something beautiful; holding the tiniest of seeds and knowing that, through God’s grace, their lives would grow into something amazing.

All Hallows had an all school faith day, in which sixth form took part in a range of activities with a religious production drama company called Rise. RISE also produced two moving plays about mercy and how in different situations it can be shown. For example the story of Don Bosco and John Alban. At the start of the day we had a small period of time where each form engaged in a reflection and prayer activity on the Theme of ‘ Year of Mercy’ . Many of the sixth form tutor groups had breakfast together and created a ‘Door of Mercy’ in our Tutor rooms.

During the day the experience that the majority of Sixth Form had was enlightening one and it brought a change in belief for some that your own action alone can make a difference to your society or even the world just as Don Bosco did. The idea of the mustard seed brought to life the idea that despite how small an action is it can become a great and significant act in today’s modern world. The day provided an opportunity for us to reflect on what it means to give and show mercy and served as a reminder of why All Hallows students support those in need in so many ways.

My Dream Job

All Year 7 students experienced an enjoyable day off timetable this week working through a range of activities linked to investigating their 'dream job'. The day started with students looking back and producing a 'timeline', recording key moments in their lives from birth until the present. After this they spent time considering jobs in the past and present, thinking about changing trends in work and assessing future developments. With these two activities completed students were ready to think into their own futures and imagine working in their own 'dream job'. The job had to be real, but could be anything from an astronaut to an engineer to a musician. Students researched real job descriptions, produced a CV 'looking into the future' and then an extended piece of writing imagining 'a day in the life of' their dream job. A great day and a great way to get Year 7 students thinking seriously about their future possible careers!

Chen Ji’s Bees When Mr Power told us about the competition I knew this was a challenge I wanted to take on, as it involved both creative writing (a great passion of mine) and learning about the natural world.

Researching on the topic, I found so much fascinating information and realised just how important it is to tell everyone what the bees do for us: without them entire ecosystems would collapse and more than half of the shelves in UK grocery stores would be empty.

I'm proud that my work was commended and look forward to using my gift voucher: possibly to buy another book on bees or the environment!

Lacrosse We have three very talented young ladies Poppy Hall, Isabella Penswick and Eva Campbell who play Lacrosse for Poynton U13.

On Sunday, they took part in a Cheshire Lacrosse Trial. To which all three have been chosen to represent the U13, Girls for Cheshire (B Team).

We are all thrilled for the girls. I just thought it would be nice to let you know and we will keep you updated how it is all going for them.

Catenian Public Speaking Contest Congratulations to Year 12 students, James Musgrave and Aiden Hughes for taking part in the annual Catenians’ Public Speaking Competition at the Manchester Conference Centre. Every year Catholic schools and colleges from all over the North West of England gather for the Catenians’ Public Speaking competition.

Contestants choose one topic for discussion prior to the event; they prepare and rehearse their speech, then address the audience and judges - without reading from a prepared text. Well done then to James Musgrave who, against fifteen other speakers, and with a superbly confident performance, persuaded a large audience that “The voice of democracy is no proof of justice!” He came second claiming the prize of £75.00 for himself and our College. James’ quiet personality is transformed when he is up on stage speaking to an audience.

The judges were impressed with his speech which was spoken with conviction and humour. He said of the experience, ‘It was terrifying speaking in front of so many people but it was also a really useful experience and a great opportunity. I got to practice both writing speeches and standing up in front of an audience, and coming second in the regional competition has given me the confidence to express my views in front of lots of people, a skill that will certainly come in handy as I pursue a career in politics.’

Aiden also delivered an excellent speech on ‘There is sufficient in the world for man’s need but not for man’s greed’ and was perhaps unlucky not to finish in the top three himself. He immediately established his presence on stage and engaged the audience. Aiden reflected on the competition, ‘The Public Speaking competition provided an excellent opportunity for me to develop skills in public speaking, in particular confidence skills as it was my first taste of speaking in front of a medium -sized, unfamiliar audience. It also helped me to develop skills in expression and trying to convey a message without relying solely on words – I learnt lots about the effective use of pace, pauses and gesticulation as well as the actual rhetoric and speech-writing skills involved in preparing for this competition. Watching the other competitors speak helped me further to understand how effective movement around the stage can be in engaging the audience in a speech, as well as enabling me to observe the varying effects of different rates of speech. Overall, I think that the competition was a fantastic opportunity, which has had huge benefits for me in terms of boosting confidence and improving my speaking skills – I’m looking forward to hopefully competing again next year.’

ALL HALLOWS HELPS THE RAINFOREST All Hallows Catholic College has saved a staggering 23 trees over the past year, simply by switching to a sustainable coffee supplier. They have also prevented 24.37 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

The Office Coffee Company has released its annual assessment of savings that have contributed to its mission to halt rainforest destruction by simply providing a great-tasting sustainable coffee option to the Romero Conference Centre one of the successful business within the College.

Each year, the Office Coffee Company calculates each customer’s contribution to the fight against deforestation – quantifying both the number of trees they have saved as well as tonnes of CO 2 stored. Together, the Office Coffee Company’s customers have saved more than 24,000 trees in the past twelve months – by indulging in over 178,000 cups of sustainably sourced coffee. That’s 100 acres of rainforest, which is equivalent to over 49 football pitches or 1,500 tennis courts!

Holocaust Memorial This week we remember those who lost their lives during the holocaust.

Let us never forget that, as human beings, we have the capacity to do great harm as well as ‘good’. We pray for the opportunity, the determination and the strength to do ‘good’ – not just for those we love but for all humankind so that we help build a world we can be proud of.

January 27th 2016 Once a year we remember those who suffered, and continue to suffer, as a result of the Jewish holocaust. January 27th marks the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest of the Nazi concentration camps and on this day we remember the millions of people killed in the Nazi persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. At this time we also honour the survivors and challenge ourselves to learn lessons from the past so that we never allow this to happen again. Whilst we live in a country where we are not at risk of genocide, but persecution is a result of hatred, prejudice and discrimination, and there is much to do here, if we are to be a just and caring society.

As a Catholic community we want to live in and promote a society where people are accepted and respected even though they are different from ourselves. We know that God has no favourites, we are all His children, one family and we should find a way of living together in positive relationship with others. This is not always easy so we have to reflect on what is going on around us and respond in love for one another. As people of God, this is what we are called to do.

Holocaust Memorial Day is one such opportunity to stop and think about what is going on and consider the part we need to play.

John Lindley visits All Hallows As part of a major exhibition at Macclesfield Library this month, the English department offered a group of Year 9 students the unique opportunity to work with John Lindley, Cheshire Poet Laureate. The exhibition, entitled ‘19162016: War and Conscience – Choices Then and Now’, marks the centenary of the Military Services Act 1916 and shares the stories of conscientious objectors from Macclesfield.

Students attended two workshops with John, who described it as ‘a wonderful experience working on a fascinating project’ and complimented the students on their ‘tremendous response’. Over the course of these two sessions, students discussed their own attitudes to war and conscription, learnt about the lives of some of the conscientious objectors from Macclesfield, and developed their ideas into poems. All of the students commented that they found the workshops enjoyable. One student said, “It was great to have advice on what to write from a published poet.” Others agreed that they had found the workshops ‘very interesting’, ‘a great experience’ and felt they had ‘learnt a lot’.

All of the poems written by students will be professionally displayed as part of the exhibition at Macclesfield Library from 13th to 27th February.

SiLENT During the services on Ash Wednesday we marked the beginning of the season of Lent.

The season of Lent in this Year of Mercy is a good time to try and listen more to God’s word and to practice works of mercy.

The theme of the service was creating time and space in our lives to think about our relationship with God - creating the opportunity to sometimes be siLENT this Lent.

We focused on the things in our lives and in our world that bring us happiness, joy, peace and freedom and we prayed to be rid of the things that cause suffering, war, poverty and abuse. Everyone at the service produced a torn cross which, when made, contained all the things that bring happiness and discard the things that bring sorrow. The torn off, discarded pieces were then disposed of in a basket as each person came forward to receive the ashes.

A group of students were commissioned as ministers to distribute the ashes. They lightly marked the sign of the cross with the ash onto our foreheads. The use of ashes as a sign of mortality and repentance has a long history in Christian and Jewish worship. The ash cross on the forehead is an outward sign of our sorrow and repentance for our sins.

The service provided several opportunities for us to be still and reflect on the huge amount of love and care lavished on us by God if we are willing to accept him into our lives. The Dance Group portrayed this in a very moving way as they showed how from 23

chaos and confusion, peace and order can emerge.

The choir really enhanced the service with some beautiful hymns and other pieces of music.

We remembered also the staff and students from our community who were on their way to India as the services were taking place. Our main fundraising to support the clinic and community rooms that we have built in India takes place during Lent and we look forward on their return to hearing what the next stage in the development is and how we can all support it during this holy season.

After spending some time reflecting on how we can make this Lent special in our lives we finished with this prayer.

Dear Lord, in this season of Lent may we: Fast from pessimism; feast on optimism.

Fast from criticism; feast on praise.

Fast from self-pity; feast on joy.

Fast from bitterness; feast on forgiveness.

Fast from idle gossip; feast on purposeful silence.

Chinese New Year

2016 is the year of the monkey in the Chinese calendar, so it’s very fitting that the Chinese Acrobatics show began with a traditional performance of the Lion and Monkey dance. This is the first time All Hallows has hosted a Chinese Acrobatics show to welcome in the Chinese New Year – or Spring Festival as it is also referred to in China.

The show was organised by the school’s resident Mandarin teacher, Mrs Denby, who enlisted the help of the Jin Long Chinese Martial Arts Academy - set up in 1999 in Greater Manchester. There they teach contemporary Chinese Wushu (more commonly known as King Fu) – see the website for more details: http://www.jin-long.co.uk/ For this special New Year performance, the Jin Long Academy 25

teamed up with some acrobatic experts from Sichuan province to put on a spectacle that wowed all. We were treated to juggling, diablo, contortionism and acrobatics, deftly performed whilst simultaneously carrying out unnerving balancing displays. These were intertwined with the more sublime and slowed down demonstrations of traditional Tai Chi, and the incredible face changing spectacle. The latter was considered by many to be the highlight of the show and was probably something new to even the most cultured within the audience.

Alongside the breath-taking stage performances, the team were also joined by some unique Chinese artists, whose mediums included wheat, and duck eggs!

The night was a big hit for All Hallows and the residents of Macclesfield, and I’m sure many will be seeking out a similar show next year!

Chinese Dumplings Chinese Dumplings (Two Servings) Ingredients For the filling * Minced pork: 200g * Ginger: 5g finely chopped * Spring onion: 30g finely chopped * Soy sauce: 1 teaspoon * Salt: 1 teaspoon * Sugar: ½ teaspoon * Sesame oil: ½ teaspoon * Water: 3 tablespoons For the dip * Soy sauce: 1 tablespoon * sesame oil: 1 teaspoon * salt: ½ teaspoons * vinegar: 1 tablespoon * Dumpling wraps (half a pack, about 30 sheets) Method * Mix thoroughly the ingredients for the filling in a mixing bowl * Use a spoon to transfer a small amount of the filling onto the center of a wrap * Wet the edge of the wrap * Fold the wrap over the filling into a semi-circle shape, press firmly down on the edges * Repeat until you use up either the wraps or the filling * Add water to a pot, bring it to the boil * Add dumplings, boil for 5-10 min uncovered, add cold water if it boils over * Mix dip into a small bowl * Dish out dumplings onto a plate. When they are done, they float. * Serve Tips: Dumpling wraps are available in supermarkets in Chinatown.

Make sure you press down on the edges hard or the dumplings will open while boiling.

On February 10th, the third day into Chinese New Year (大年初三 ) Year 9 Mandarin students had a special Chinese lesson in F21 and tried their hands at Chinese cooking – making dumplings. Dumplings are a very traditional food to eat during Chinese New Year and cooking dumplings usually involves the whole household. With the help of Mrs McMahon, teacher of Mandarin and Mrs Heaton, teacher of Food Technology, the Year 9 students had an authentic experience of making dumplings using ingredients bought from Chinatown.

According to the students they enjoyed the eating part most using chopsticks and trying various dips.

ST JOHN’S SCIENCE DAY AT ALL HALLOWS On Tuesday 26th January, All Hallows’ Science department hosted 90 year 5 and 6 students from St John’s Primary School for the day. The primary students spent the day experiencing lessons in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Animal Management. The day was packed full of fun scientific investigations and hands on work.

In Biology, students learned about what happens to your food inside your body and played detective, investigating samples of “sick” in order to work out what each patient was allergic to. The chemistry teachers taught the students the science behind fireworks and what elements cause the sky to light up different colours. Physics investigated air resistance and students were challenged to design a parachute that could save a falling egg from breaking. Finally, the students enjoyed a hands on lesson caring for our animals and learning about their natural habitats. The science teachers were assisted by some our finest science students here at All Hallows. The year 9s were asked what they thought of their day teaching and had this to say; Chemistry Today we taught Chemistry and the theme of fireworks. We were testing flames and metals such as Copper, Potassium, Lithium and Sodium and how the different metals affected the colour of the flame. I think the primary school children enjoyed this activity because none of them had done anything like that practical before and the excitement on their faces was amazing. Therefore, I think it was really useful for them and they had a new and engaging experience that they will remember and hopefully want to pursue later at high school. Personally I had a great day and thoroughly enjoyed it much like the children who took part.

Physics In our lesson we were testing air resistance by using parachutes and the students had to make their own parachutes so that their eggs wouldn’t break. The primary students were very enthusiastic and got really involved in the day. I think it was useful for them because they were able to go into more detail about forces and were able to understand how it can be applied to things like sports. Overall I had a good day and think that I was able to help teach them all something new.

Biology The Year 5 and 6 thoroughly enjoyed their day learning about what happens to their food after they had eaten it. The practical was good because the science technicians made fake sick for us to test but the primary students believed it was real. I think all the students left with newfound knowledge on the human body. I enjoyed my day because I liked teaching the younger students, although I feel like being a teacher would be a stressful job!

Animal Management The primary students enjoyed it as they got to handle the animals. It was useful for them as they gained knowledge of the different needs of animals and how they are adapted to these needs.

My favourite part of the day was helping the children handle the animals but I would not become a teacher as it seems really hard to control a class.

R&BE – Register and Be a Lifesaver On 3rd February 2016, a volunteer guest speaker from Anthony Nolan, Alan Tomlinson, inspired many of our Year 12 students during General RE to register for the Anthony Nolan register or Blood and Organ Donation. Their willingness to try to help another person was fantastic and truly demonstrated the Gospel Values that All Hallows Catholic College aims to live out daily.

An initial poll of reasons to or not to donate was carried out and the Year 12 students gave honest and understandable reasons why they may be reluctant to become part of the donor register. Alan Tomlinson addressed concerns and gave many reasons why these concerns may be lessened.

We were also reminded of a former student of All Hallows Catholic College who went on to become the youngest ever donor, Vicky Rathmill, who went on to save a person’s life through her donations and as a direct result of a similar talk we were hearing.

Alan Tomlinson informed the students of the Anthony Nolan register for Stem Cell and Bone Marrow; identifying someone who may be a match enabling a donation to save a life of someone who, for instance, may have a blood disorder. He informed us of Anthony Nolan himself too; a three year old boy born with an inherited blood disorder and, as a result, could not fight infection. His mother, Shirley Nolan, was driven to set up the world’s first register to match donors in desperate need. A match for Anthony Nolan was found and his life was extended for a few more years.

During their work, however, they found there was a need to educate the population and dispel myths about bone marrow transplants as not enough people were coming forward. It is recognised that each of us has a capacity to save a life. Alan explained the process simply and clearly for our students; giving examples of those have gone on to support others through donation. There are restrictions e.g. due to age and weight but the registration process is very straightforward and simply known as “give a spit”. He pointed out that just 4% of those who can give blood, do give blood. This he compared to the number of those who will need donor blood: 25%. Alan shared his own story with the students. He too was one who benefited from the Anthony Nolan register when he had needed a stem cell donor in 2011. He met his donor in April 2014 and was able to personally give his heartfelt thanks for the fact that his wife still had a husband and his three children still had their father.

I have really enjoyed all the books so far and would be hard pushed to pick a favourite! I was surprised at how much I enjoyed ‘Finding Audrey’ which is a sensitive and very human portrait of a teenager coming to terms with her mental illness. ‘The Door That Led to Where’ also surprised me as the time travelling exploits of AJ, Slim and Leon really gripped me and I couldn’t put the book down. Maybe when I have finished the list I might find it easier to decide…

ÂŁ1500 Raised for East Cheshire Hospice December 2015 saw students from Years 7 and 8 take part in the Reindeer Run. The annual event aims to raise vital funds for our local hospice; East Cheshire Hospice.

Earlier in the month Leah Goodhind from the charity came into assembly to raise awareness and reasons why fundraising events like the Reindeer Run are so important for the charity. The sponsored event took place in Core PE lessons and saw the two year groups raise a massive ÂŁ1500!!! A massive well done, and thank you to all students and their families who contributed.

G.C.S.E PE Weekend Another successful GCSE PE weekend at High Adventure!

33 GCSE PE students went away to fight the elements on an outdoor adventurous weekend at 'High Adventure' in Yorkshire.

This is a specialist Outdoor Centre with the opportunity for students to enhance their GCSE practical activity grades by doing Orienteering, Climbing or Mountain biking.

Students opted for Orienteering and were a credit to the College.

They enjoyed taking on various Orienteering sites in Yorkshire including one on Ilkley Moor! They experienced wind, rain sleet and snow in-between the odd ray of sunshine! They also took part in an underground maze at the Centre.

The students worked really hard all weekend and got some excellent grades that will now count towards their GCSE grade. Well done all who went!

AHLC Basket ball tournament

The 3rd annual Year 5/6 All Hallows Learning Community Basketball tournament was played on the 10th February . Teams from St John's, St Alban’s, St Mary's and St Paul’s played in a round robin competition. All the teams involved demonstrated a high level of skill, commitment and embodied the 12 virtues of sport that the John Paul II foundation for sport looks to develop in our pupils. After the very competitive rounds St Alban’s emerged victorious with St John’s a very close second and St Mary’s third. The outcome was decided on points scored after St John’s and St Alban’s tied at the top of the leader board. In a fantastic last match St John’s score two baskets in the last 30 seconds to take the decision to a points scored conclusion in which St Alban’s won by scoring 46pts compared to St John’s 42pts.

Well done to all involve and we look forward to seeing you at the next tournament which will be netball.

KNUTSFORD ACADEMY ‘EGERTON FC’ V MACCLESFIELD FOOTBALL ACADEMY British Colleges Cat 3G MFA back to Winning Ways After a solid performance in Skelmersdale last week, this week MFA travelled to neighbours, Knutsford Academy, looking to kick start the season.

The game began at a solid pace, with the home side creating several good opportunities to score, yet the score stayed 0-0 after some heroic defending notably from goalkeeper Warters. Midway through the 1st half Knutsford were awarded a somewhat soft penalty. The resulting effort hit the post and was slammed home on the rebound by the taker with no touch from an MFA player. The referee rightly awarded MFA a free kick and the goal did not stand.

MFA grew into the game and against the run of play took the lead. Good strong play from Niza Chilfya down the left saw his cross find James Robins at the back post to place the ball home. 0-1.

Throughout the second half MFA showed great courage and determination, including a string of fine saves from Warters.

After a couple of timely substitutions MFA sealed the much deserved victory when Jack Robinson’s clever through ball released Tom Nickson. The winger ran through one on one with the keeper and slotted home, cue the celebrations from players and coaching staff alike.

Final Score 0-2 to Macclesfield Football Academy.

Paul McGuire said; “I’m absolutely thrilled for the lads today.

We rode our luck, but you make your own luck in this game and due to the effort and commitment they showed we deserved it. It’s been a tough period, but we’ve come out of it stronger”.

About the end to end action Paul commented; “I’ve seen a lot of games this season, but wow this was a whole new one. How we kept a clean sheet I don’t know. Myself, Byron and Stewart from MTFC thoroughly enjoyed the game, it certainly kept us on the edge of our seats”.

MACCLESFIELD FOOTBALL ACADEMY – TRAINING MATCH FOR NEW RECRUITS 22nd January 2016 saw future academy programme players come together from high schools across Cheshire to play in an away fixture at the Platt Lane Complex in Manchester.

The young Year 11 players performed brilliantly to win the game 3 – 2 with a dominant team display.

The match saw the MFA players start strongly with high levels of possession. It wasn’t too long before striker, Sam Ashton pounced on 14 minutes with a great side-footed finish from six yards out. The assist came from a smart cross from the right hand side by Scott Dinsley after he made a far post run to get on to an over hit corner.

Will Pickford got the second of the game on the 28th minute after following up from a long range shot that was by the opposing goalkeeper. spilt HALF-TIME FETA Manchester 0 vs. 2 Macclesfield Football Academy FETA Manchester started the second half much stronger and started to cause more problems to the MFA backline. The home side were back in the game after 52 minutes when a goal mouth scramble saw a goal fly in to make it 1 – 2.

Aidan Ramadani in the MFA goal pulled off a few excellent saves to keep the away team leading. 75 minutes in saw Jack Bennett increase the lead with a well taken goal which was well deserved after a good performance all game. 1 – 3.

FETA kept in the game and made the last 10 minutes tense after they scored a great goal from the edge of the penalty box. 2 – 3. However, MFA held strong with some stand out performances, most notably from Scott Dinsley in central midfield and Josh Churchman at right back.

British Colleges League Cat 3G A closely fought game ended with MFA losing by two goals to nil at table toppers Elite. This was a much improved performance by MFA who were extremely unlucky on more than one occasion not to get on the score sheet.

With several changes in personnel and a more vibrant and enthusiastic approach meant MFA took it to the hosts from the first minute. Striker Niza Chilufya was judged offside on a couple of occasions as he burst through on goal, much to the visitor’s disappointment.

As MFA pressed, they were caught by a sucker punch goal when a mistake at the heart of the defence allowed for an easy chance to be converted. 1-0.

Again MFA pressed and were unlucky to hit the post from a direct free kick. Elite managed a second and decisive goal and proved why they are top of the league as they ground out a victory when a draw would have been the fair result.

Final result 2-0 to Elite Soccer Academy, leaving MFA mid-table with 4 League games to go.
