Aspire Easter & Epiphany 2015

Dear Friends, As many of you will know, I’m currently working as Executive Principal over two schools: our College and St Chad’s Catholic and Church of England High School in Runcorn. This arrangement has now been extended to the end of the next academic year. It is a great privilege to share ideas and I am thrilled that I can offer my experience and showcase the excellent teaching and learning that I see everyday All Hallows. Outstanding schools are encouraged by the government to support and inspire others when they are having difficulties.

All Hallows was designated as a National Support School in 2013 when I was made a National Leader of Education. The experience of working across two school has its challenges. When I first thought of the long 50 minute drive to Runcorn, it would be fair to say I was slightly concerned. Now I realise the journey has given me time to think about what brings success to a school and what makes All Hallows so special.

Education is about drawing out potential. Teachers are constantly looking for ways to bring out the talents of their students. It is vital that we constantly focus on the renewal of teaching and learning. A remarkable thing happens when a student learns and understands something for the first time. Teachers always remember that moment because it is so significant. The process of change, the pursuit of excellence and concern for others is right at the heart of what we do at All Hallows. I’ve lost count of the number of students who have enquired with genuine interest about how the other school is doing and this is something we can all be proud of.

It is true to say that whenever All Hallows works with other schools, we always come away learning something ourselves. We share what we know in line with our values of honourable purpose, respect, compassion, co-operation and stewardship and we receive, in all humility the ‘nuggets of goodness’ they have to offer. This is very true when it comes to St Chad’s. Over twenty staff from All Hallows have worked at St Chad’s recently and over ten staff from St Chad’s have visited our College. We have trained St Chad’s in the Teacher Effectiveness Enhancement Programme and helped them to quality assure their teaching and establish a regular Professional Development programme. Our two leadership teams will meet for strategic planning next month.

In this magazine we can see the extent our belief in the creativity of our teachers and students. I am particularly delighted with the way the ‘lots of socks’ World Down Syndrome Awareness Day made a link with the South African idea of Ubuntu which is a very powerful concept. Ubuntu is about the connection we all share as human beings and our compassion for others. The photograph of the students in the Ubuntu circle somehow seemed to capture the essence of this idea and I’ve already had one request to use the photo in a talk on Christian Ethos. The development of our approach to Ash Wednesday including the ‘40 nudges’ and the Holocaust memorial activities have given a really important time to reflect on what is important in our lives. It is great to see that retreats are as popular as ever. I’m also pleased that our work on enterprise is being awarded. Please take time to read about our India project and the amazing work that is being achieved.

In this edition, we also introduce you to our wonderful team of Governors who work tirelessly to make sure our College continues to grow. Once again, there’s so much to celebrate at All Hallows. Let’s never take it for granted.

Our Business focussed curriculum is recognised by Federation of small Businesses All Hallows has scooped a special award for its ‘inspirational’ business focused curriculum.

The Federation of Small Businesses which is the UK’s largest support organisation for SMEs, presented the Principal, Tony Billings with the trophy to recognise the College’s business rich curriculum which actively encourages pupils to think like entrepreneurs.

As part of their business approach to teaching, the College manages its own farm, rearing livestock for meat, chickens for eggs which are sold on the premises, and last year introduced a bee hive, raffling off the precious honey for profit.

All Hallows, nominated for the Federation’s Business Buddy Award by Macclesfield MP, David Rutley, was one of the first schools in the country to seek specialist status in business in 2006. When specialism funding was withdrawn in 2010, the college sought academy status so it could continue to deliver learning with a business focus. It remains one of just a handful of schools

nationally to teach Business Studies from Year 7 upwards and now also visits local primary schools to spread the entrepreneurial message to Key Stage 2 children.

The FSB’s Regional Chairman for Manchester and North Cheshire, Simon Edmondson, said: All Hallows is doing brilliant work by encouraging youngsters to think and behave like real entrepreneurs and ultimately one day be business owners themselves.

We need more schools like this to ensure that the UK economy has the right talent coming through for generations to come.

Small businesses are delivering the jobs and growth we are currently seeing in the UK, but we need more people step up to the challenge if this is to continue. All Hallows are doing a great job of encouraging an entrepreneurial mindset in students and putting business ideas forward.

All Hallows Principal Tony Billings said: “It’s fantastic to be recognised by a leading business organisation and know the work we do is held in such high regard. It is important for the students, the employers of tomorrow, to implement work place skills and for those who are business minded to grow their skills. Our curriculum also teaches good business ethics and sustainability, this is something that’s very much at the heart of what we are trying to instil in the students and it’s where our farm is a great teaching tool.”

On Friday 20 March 2015 our College joined together to celebrate World Down Syndrome Awareness Day by wearing 'lots of socks'. Students and staff across the College turned up in crazy socks to help raise awareness that we are all different and our unique qualities are to be celebrated. As a College we aim to live out core values of ‘respect, compassion, honourable purpose, stewardship and co-operation’ whenever we can.

At lunchtime students and staff gathered together to have their photo taken and they re-enacted a photo Mr Billings had shared with staff and students at the start of our academic year. The photo helped us to understand the South African word ‘Ubuntu’ which means "the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity."

CINDERS AND ASHES The story of Cinderella might not be the first thing that most people would think of during Lent, but this was how the season of Lent was introduced to All Hallows’ students on their return to College in February.

Following a wonderful dramatisation of the story by the Year 10 drama group, students were invited to reflect on the life of Cinderella, the girl who lived in the cinders, who endured daily suffering before being set free to live a new life with her Prince Charming.

Sitting in the ashes or cinders is a common practice throughout many different religions and cultures. Lent is a time in which we are invited to metaphorically sit in the ashes to reflect on our lives, to pray and repent, to fast, give alms (charity) and ultimately to be reconciled or restored in our relationship with God. Ash Wednesday took place during the half-term and because we didn’t want anybody to miss out, the College invited every student to receive the ashes on their forehead with the words, ‘Repent, and be faithful to the Gospel’.

Each student and member of staff was encouraged to take up a daily challenge – ‘40 nudges in a generous direction’. For example, if someone gives up chocolate they would give the money to a favorite charity; if the TV is turned off, they spend more time helping a neighbor.

The service began with the haunting melody of, ‘Father I Have Sinned’ and concluded with beautiful reflective music. Special thanks must go to the worship band and choir for all the beautiful music.

RANAVA’S REVENGE Our key stage three students have gone to town (more like the deepest depths of India!) in our production of ‘Ravana’s Revenge’. An original script written and directed by James Pearson, this piece has brought a taste of The East to Macclesfield.

Forty students starred in this Bollywood style musical production; some making their debut performance. The piece tells the story of the ten -headed evil goddess Ravana, who creates chaos in an Indian kingdom, which pushes the forces of good and evil to a final showdown.

“An extremely fun and challenging performance, which everyone has enjoyed being part of.

As a cast, we have overcome many problems, such as teachers dancing badly (Mr Richardson!)” Conor Maguinness (Lashmana) “It has been a fun show to be part of because I have been able to meet new people and express and improve on my acting skills. We have been able to learn true Bollywood movements and about the old Hindu tale of Rama and Sita. I cannot wait for the next production, and I am looking forward to starting the BTEC Performing Arts course next year.” Katie Fox (Ravana) Ms Pridding- Head of Performing Arts has said “It was truly wonderful to see such a diverse range of students brought together under the umbrella of the Arts. Some pupils had never performed on the stage before and were terrified before they went on. As I looked around the studio I could only see smiles on people’s faces at the colourful, funny, engaging and light hearted production which embraced the Bollywood style. It made me think that we should definitely be doing more to promote other cultures and styles through the Arts and we are already talking about what to do next year”.

So what is NEXT YEAR? Will there be another KS3 production? The answer to that is simply YES. There will be two more fascinating opportunities for ANY student next year as ALL HALLOWS enters the ‘National Connections’ competition. Not only that, we will also be entering the Shakespeare’s schools festival. If you haven’t taken Drama or Dance or Music as an option but are passionate about performance or are hiding a secret talent, then WE NEED YOU. Keep your eyes peeled for more information.

A second stream of Key Stage 3 Business and Enterprise students celebrated their conclusion of 'The Clock Project' this term with the production of a wonderful array of clocks. These were produced in response to a new curriculum initiative bringing together the skills and talents of two faculties: Business, IT and Enterprise ,and Art, Design and Technology. Year 7 and 8 students have spent a term in the new Business, Enterprise, Art, Design and Technology carousel researching, designing and making clocks for customers who they interviewed to discover their exact needs.

Students took the findings of their research forward to produce a stunning collection of unique clocks made to individual customer specifications. As part of the project they researched material and equipment costs, pricing strategies and competitors to finally produce a 'one-off' styled clock based on 'job production' techniques. The successful team went ahead to produce a business plan for a new small business specialising in designing and making clocks with a unique selling point (USP). Funds raised from The Clock Project were impressive with individual students donating up to ÂŁ15 each towards the India Clinic Appeal from their profits. The students themselves have thoroughly enjoyed the project and their customers have been absolutely delighted, with some clocks being sent off to foreign climes! 'The Clock Project' is set to continue into the future, with 'The Stalls Project' following closely behind. Robert Downes of The Federation of Small Businesses recognised their achievements amongst many other enterprise successes at All Hallows and awarded All Hallows a trophy to celebrate all that is 'Business and Enterprise' at All Hallows.

Governors met for a training session on 17 January 2015 to review governance and have a closer look at the data and performance of the College. The data training session looked at an important document called ‘Raise Online’ and was led by Mrs S Williams, who was assisted by other members of the leadership team.

An afternoon session was led by Governor Mrs Sharon Jackson, who took the governors through a training needs analysis, which included discussions on further training requirements. Mrs Jacqui Feely, Chair of Governors then took the Governors through a governance and skills audit. Governors have also completed mini pen portraits which are shared with you on our website.

The work of the governors was highly praised in our recent Ofsted which said: ‘Governors are highly effective in their role and governance is outstanding. They are clear about their responsibilities and are fully involved in establishing the College’s ethos, vision and ambition.’

A large number of governors attended the inspection with their notes in hand to tell the lead inspector that they fully understood the performance and developmental needs of the College. Mr Billings, our Principal, who is himself an Additional Inspector, said: This always makes a powerful difference to an inspection. The success of All Hallows is built on a highly effective partnership between the leadership of the College and governors, whereby governors give support and challenge in equal measure. In over fifteen years of senior leadership, I can honestly say this is the most effective Governing Body with which I have had the privilege of working.

All governors are committed to helping parents, students and teachers understand more about what they do and why. Jacqui Feely explained “Part of the governor role is to ensure lines of communication between all partners are open and used to increase understanding and dialogue.” One of the targets for governors this year on the College Improvement Plan includes a review of the ways in which Student Voice and Parent Partnership are effective and to improve and strengthen them where possible. Governors try hard to be present at functions and celebrations, open days and performances, so we can talk to parents informally.

Governors will liaise with Student Voice and consider the many varied ways parents can interact with staff and the response to questionnaires, consultations and surgeries as well as tracking developments discussed by the Student Council.

We would like to thank parents for their response to the Ofsted questionnaire, which was so positive and remarked upon by the inspection team as contributing to our ‘Outstanding’ outcome. We assure you that we appreciate all the support and contributions made to the College by parents and the commitment, co-operation and hard work of the students. Together with the devotion, dedication and professionalism of the Senior Leadership Team and every member of staff, we are privileged to play our part in serving our “Outstanding Academy.”

We are seeking possible future Governors who can complement the skills of current Governors. One vital aspect is that you are able to be present to some of the work of the College during the day and also attend all the meetings. The 27th January 2015 marked the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Staff and students in College attended a series of assemblies presented by the History Department to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day in memory of the six million Jewish men, women and children who had perished at the hands of the Nazis.

However, it is important that we do not remember those who were murdered and the survivors of those atrocities simply as a statistic, but rather honour their individual lives with dignity and respect.

Holocaust Memorial Day is a time when we seek to learn the lessons of the past and to recognise that genocide does not just take place on its own, it’s a steady process which can begin if discrimination,

racism and hatred are not checked and prevented. At All Hallows we challenge ourselves to use the lessons of their experience to help create a safer, more peaceful future alongside our College values.

The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust (HMDT) is the charity that promotes and supports Holocaust Memorial Day. This year, the theme is ‘Keeping the Memory Alive.’ One way that we have honoured those who were murdered and those who survived is to keep their memory alive with our own College Holocaust memorial. Installed permanently within our College Peace Garden, the barbed wire fence represents persecution and victimisation. The labels represent luggage tags, with each form group retelling the journey of a victim or survivor in order to keep their memory alive.

Our Peace Garden memorial is a place where students and staff alike can reflect and pray, particularly on Holocaust Memorial Day, 27th January each year.

On Wednesday 11 February a small group of students from All Hallows Catholic College took part in ‘Travel Safe Week’, a campaign launched at Manchester Airport working with organisations such as the ‘Stop the Traffik’ charity and IJM (International Justice Mission). As a group, we handed out leaflets and spoke to passengers and airport staff in order to raise awareness about Human Trafficking. As part of the Sixth Form general RE curriculum we have been learning about different types of human trafficking and how to spot the signs and the importance of preventing it. As a year group, we have also fundraised for the charity’ raising awareness across the college, by making biscuits, t-shirts and banners.

Human Trafficking is when people are bought and sold for sexual exploitation, forced labour, street crime, domestic servitude or even the sale of organs and human sacrifice. Men, women and children are trafficked within their own countries and across international borders.

Trafficking can affect any continent, any country and any person. There are more human beings living in slavery around the world in 2015 than any other time in human history. It is estimated that 2.4 million people across the globe are victims of human trafficking at any one time, 1.2 million of which are children.

By taking part in this campaign we hoped to take a step towards increasing awareness of Human Trafficking. The key to solving the issue is for society, government and businesses to share knowledge, information and resources, gaining the support of the general public and government to build a global movement against this heinous crime.

ALL HALLOWS STUDENTS JOIN NCS SUCCESS I was delighted to attend a concert on Saturday which was organised by some of the students in Sixth Form as part of their NCS (National Citizenship Service).

Over the last two months, they have attended a variety of sessions, completed 30 hours voluntary work, including a sponsored run in Macclesfield and organising, finding acts and putting on the concert, all in aid of East Cheshire Hospice.

This NCS group (approx 30 young people, including students from AHCC) were thrilled to find that the total raised by them for this very worthwhile charity was ÂŁ1000.

They will be attending a graduation ceremony on Wed 25 March at Sandbach Town Hall.

In January this year, the music department received an email from the director of the Macclesfield Music Festival, Liz Wolski, inviting All Hallows to bring a small group and a soloist to the Thursday evening concert of the festival on the 12 February.

They gave us two slots to perform in, each up to 10 minutes in length. We suggested our Inspire choir to perform in one slot, and Joshua Mock to be our soloist. This was a brave move. Whilst we knew that Joshua was confident on the cello, we didn’t yet have a choir!

The rehearsals started in earnest. We had five weeks to successfully train a choir and the challenges we faced were huge. Not only did they have to learn to sing the music, they had to learn to listen to each other, sing as a team and make a blended sound when singing together. As the date loomed closer, the children were working harder than ever. With a week of rehearsal lost to inclement weather and an early school closure, the pressure was mounting.

On the 12th February, 15 students turned up at Macclesfield Academy ready to perform. All Eeght primary schools joined All Hallows along with students from Macclesfield Academy.

Josh started with a brilliant performance of Brahms’ Cello Sonata no.1 and played with style and accuracy. The choir would have to be on top form to match his standard.

They walked on stage and stood, poised to perform. Mr Andrews played the first chords of the accompaniment and they started to sing. The sound was nothing short of excellent. They performed with confidence and a musical subtlety, usually only seen in performers twice their age.

Mr Richardson, our Head of Music, said: It was wonderful to see the school community in Macclesfield together for such a great evening of entertainment. Our students looked professional and very smartly dressed, and I commend all the hard work that went into the rehearsals and performance.

Mr Andrews would also like to thank the students for all their hard work and dedication, and the parents of our pupils for their continued support. An incredible result.

The Music Department

This year, All Hallows was granted funding to send staff on a French half-term course. Mr Sweeney and Miss Easter decided to immerse themselves in the French language, food and culture during a 6-day course in Rouen, Normandy. Here’s our summary of what the week was like. However, to make it a little more challenging, it’s written in French! How much can you understand?

On a appris la langue française pendant 3 heures, de 9.30 à 13.00 du lundi au vendredi.

On a fait un tour de Rouen: On a mangé beaucoup de fromage. Certains fromages sont malodorants mais délicieux!

On a mangé des escargots (snails), mais Monsieur Sweeney a trouvé les escargots dégoûtants!

On a mangé d’autres plats typiques de Normandie et de la France, par exemple, des crêpes (pour le plat principal et le dessert!) et des gâteaux: On a bu du chocolat chaud Et on a fait un cours pour faire les macarons! C’était super!

AUSTRIA SKI TRIP窶認EBRUARY 2015 Mr Keane, Miss Thomason and twenty eight students on a mountain, what could go wrong?

According to all reports it was a perfect trip. We left school on Friday 13 February and made our way down to Dover for our evening crossing to Calais. From Calais we travelled on to our destination in Austria.

We arrived in Landeck, where we collected our skis and boots before settling into our hotel. Our ski adventures began on Sunday.

We were split into three groups of abilities and had a ski instructor for the week.

Some students learned how to ski for the first time and the rest of us continued to improve our technique!

We were very lucky to have blue skies and sunshine all week with fantastic skiing conditions. We skied in two locations over the course of the week.

In the evenings we tried curling, Austrian bowling (skittles) and went out to a local cafe for ice cream.

The students finished their week with a slalom race and medals were awarded for the winners. The students were commended by the hotel owner personally and our coach drivers (who spent the week ferrying us about) on their conduct and were a credit to themselves, college and their parents.

YEAR 10 RETREAT

The weather outside might have been ‘frightful’, but the spirit inside was definitely ‘delightful’. Not even the wet weather could dampen the mood of the Year 10 students who went on their retreat just before Christmas to Castlerigg Manor in Keswick. The Retreat team commended the students because whilst in their experience, some young people complain about the walks even on gloriously sunny days, not a single moan or groan was heard from the All Hallows students in spite of some of the wettest weather ever experienced! ‘The Year 10 students were a delight to be with and we shall miss all of them’, commented Ruth Baker, the programme Leader.

Dominic Cook spoke of it being ‘an unforgettable experience ….. my faith became stronger with each day’ and Oliver Franklin remarked that he, ‘really enjoyed the friendship that grew with students he didn’t otherwise know…it was very special’.

Students enjoyed the experience so much, that many are going back for an open retreat at Easter. The Year 10 students were great ambassadors of All Hallows and on behalf of Mrs Stewart and Miss Clarke, I would like to say once again how proud of them we all are.

Unforgettable Retreat for Year 10 Students

”

‘Endless Smiles & Laughter’ on Retreat with students from Year 11 Year 11 students thought the only dunking they would be experiencing during their retreat would be that of their biscuits in mugs of hot chocolate; little did they realise that it was for some a whole body experience into a big tub of very cold water outdoors.

This was the very first residential retreat for our Year 11 students and the very first at the new Soli House in the grounds of Alton Castle. Such was their experience at the Year 10 retreat at Castlerigg last year, forty seven students signed up to come this time.

In addition to old favourites, such as the trekking and adventure course, we were introduced to new activities including the dunking pond! Everybody really joined in, especially with the prayer and worship.

Here are a few quotes from George Joseph, Lydia Baggs, Sean Warren, Amy Joyce, and Patrick Bescoby, ‘Great experience’, ‘Got to know God and each other better’, ‘Found our true selves’, ‘Good chance to make new friends’, ‘Endless smiles & laughter’, ‘Fun with friends and reflective with faith’, ‘A chance to get away from ‘reality’. Once again, the Year 11 students were great ambassadors of All Hallows.

Author Visit As part of our Bookfest celebrating World Book Day we were visited by author Jon Mayhew for a day of inspirational talks and writing workshops. Students were also able to ask questions about what it is like to be a writer and get signed copies of Jon’s six books.

In the morning Jon spoke to all Year 8 students about his journey to becoming a writer. He entertained us with stories of what he was like as boy at primary school. We learnt that he became fascinated by heroes and villains through reading Marvel comics which have influenced his Monster Odyssey series in particular. It was really interesting to learn that when he fell out of love with reading, he returned to old favourites and that he tried lots of different authors and genres as he became a more confident reader. His advice was ‘Just keep reading!’

Our students felt that these talks had made them think differently about reading by saying afterwards It is important to read because it can help you in later life. There is always a point to reading and it helps you with your English.

I really enjoyed listening to a real author and finding how he began to write as a child. It made me realise that I could do something like that.

In the afternoon, Jon delivered a workshop called ‘The Art of Fear’ to two selected groups of year 8 students. The focus of which was how to create tension and suspense in creative writing. Jon looked at a range of writing techniques and our students shared their thoughts about how these techniques might impact on readers. Students then had fun creating some very spooky descriptions and many of these have been turned into short stories for a writing competition, judged by Jon, which we will be published.

Of the workshop, one student said, ‘It has been a different experience having an author talking about how to write than we would have in a normal lesson.’

Ms Sinclair our librarian, felt the day was a real success. “I believe it is really important for our students to meet authors and hear their stories: what inspired them and how they go about writing their novels. The Jon Mayhew visit seems to have motivated many of the students in both their reading and writing which is a fantastic conclusion to a thoroughly enjoyable day!”

I had a great time and found the students to be really engaged and interested in reading. I thought that their responses were thoughtful and they asked some superb questions too. In the writing workshops, the standard of writing was high and the students were engaged and involved in every aspect of the session. I really enjoyed working with them.

Staff and students alike made me feel very welcome.

SHORT STORY COMPETITON FINALISTS All Year 8 students were able to enter a horror writing competition, basing their story on inspiration from the talk and workshops given by Jon Mayhew on his visit. The idea was to use to lots of suspense and description to create a creepy opening to a short story.

AND THE WINNER IS…. AIDAN ARCH 8H Tick. Tock. The silence echoed around, absolute. On I moved, rotting leaves crunching under my feet, stumbling on tree roots stretched over the path. Gnarled stumps and trunks jumping from the gloom.

Eerie darkness split only by the moon. Something was wrong; hairs prickled on my back. A silver glint out of the corner of my eye. Something was near, tracing my steps. Something followed, quiet as a mouse. Something chased me, cloaked in darkness. My steps quickened as fear prickled my mind, sweat beading down my neck.

Escalating in speed, heart pumping, breath quickening. Now I could hear the other set of feet. Now I could feel that maniacal gaze. Now I could smell the undead presence. Suddenly, out of nowhere the ground fell away into a stream. Sprawling on the ground, the taste of dirt in my mouth, the ground shook…

The world got colder as the shadow towered over me. Worse still was the thing itself.

With the cloak of darkness gone, a giant stood before me. Its mouth stained yellow and red. On its feet it wore huge hobnail boots. Up one came, over my head.

Then all went black…

RUNNERS UP— HOLLY HOUGHTON & HANNAH ELVY My footsteps quicken. My heart starts to race. I don’t know what I am running from but I know that it is something, something lurking out there in the vast nothingness of the woods. Thick fog starts to role in, choking me from behind. My pace quickens to a run and my footsteps are echoed by snapping branches. I know for definite that I am not alone. I feel a mental clock ticking inside my head as if I am running out of time. The smell of freshly cut grass is trampled on by the stench of death. As if someone has just walked right over my grave.

Quickly, as my imagination takes over, I can picture what this something looks like: emerald green eyes, staring. Claws to scratch my eyes, sharp fangs as big as my fingers and feet that could kill a man with just one step. Fading away the picture is shattered as a shivering warm breath tickles my back. Fearing the worst I start to run again. But a hand grabs my shoulder tight. I turn to face my death but breathe a sigh of relief as it wasn’t as I pictured. I take back my relief as the creature’s eyes turn black and the claws come out…

RUNNERS UP— DARENCE CUDIAMAT & RORY LOUGHREY The rain hammered down on top of his hat. Meanwhile, Jon slowly tip towed down the rat infested alleyway. Suddenly, he hears a noise from behind him.

Someone or something was there…

In the corner of his eye he spots a black figure standing in the entrance of the alleyway. “Who are you?” said Jon. The dark mysterious figure didn’t reply. Jon turned to face him. “Who are you?” said Jon. Again, there was no reply.

Seconds later the figure said, “I have a riddle for you,” in a dark croaky voice.

“What’s the riddle? said Jon, panicking.

“What goes up a mountain but doesn’t move?”

“A path” said Jon confidently.

“You have answered the riddle correctly.”

Then the mysterious figure disappeared. Seconds later a wave of darkness ran towards him, quicker than the speed of light.

RUNNERS UP— CHARLIE MARSHALL He woke up sweating and confused. He tried to remember his name as he took in the sights around him. Small amounts of light poured in from rips in the old fabric ceiling. A ring of chairs surrounded him above a small wall, as if he was trapped in a zoon as the main attraction. A circus. Alone in a derelict circus and no way of calling for help. He decided to take a look around. “Hello?” He shouted. “Can anyone hear me?” As if to answer his question, music started playing through speakers and a mysterious voice shouted, “Welcome to Zimbo’s Circus! We hope you enjoy the rest of eternity here. You will make lots of friends, unless they kill you of course. Oh, and don’t try to escape because then we would have a few problems, wouldn’t we? I hope you have fun!” He knew now he needed to find a way out…

RUNNERS UP— ALEX INSLEY Howling split the dawn, wolves! The pack had found our sent at last. I watched as Arngran lobbed another log onto the fire sending sparks showering everywhere. He then pummelled it with his axe heating the black half up to almost melting temperature. I looked down at my blade, its scabbard rusted and dirty however, the blade itself was an iridescent red that was heated in the fires of Gnronsh! I took it out of the scabbard and followed Arngran’s example and stabbed the burning embers, then I spared a glance at Freahlaf, the mysterious, pointy eared being we had found in the deserted hull of the ghost ship named ‘Shadow Crawler’, a second but no more told me that he was still in a coma. Arngran and I stood guard of Freahlaf and the rest of our supplies and waited… waited… waited…

Fairtrade Fortnight sets aside two weeks every year in which the principles and products of fair trade are promoted and the links between consumers and producers are highlighted. Each year has a different theme. Fairtrade Fortnight 2015 is aimed to celebrate the impact of Fairtrade since it was established twenty years ago and by turning a spotlight on the fairtrade producers.

By sharing their stories in a fresh and compelling way, the aim was to remind the UK of the dramatic difference choosing Fairtrade makes and how much it is still needed. The focus this year was on a few core commodities like cocoa, sugar, and tea.

THE BIG FAIRTRADE BAKEOFF

Fair trade fortnight/Bake off

As a Fairtrade school, All Hallows Fairtrade Council meets once every half term to discuss and develop ideas to spread the message of Fairtrade. This year a ‘Big Bake Off’ was organised in order to promote the use of fair trade ingredients as well as raising money for All Hallows’ India Project. Students and staff alike challenged themselves to not only bake something that tasted good, but also to research, locate and use fair trade products in their baking. The results were wide-ranging and delicious, with cakes ranging from chocolate and banana cake to chocolate crispy squares; all made and sold with a story to tell. The cakes were enjoyed by many and consequently the event raised £107 for the India Project. Ms Lawrey, a member of the Fairtrade Council, expressed her delight at the success of the event saying “it is fantastic to see the students so enthusiastic about Fairtrade”.

The Fairtrade Council is also involved in fundraising and awareness events that take place outside of All Hallows, within the Fairtrade town of Macclesfield. Year 9 students and members of the Fairtrade Council, Chen Ji and Ella Pointer, represented the school on Saturday 7 March at Macclesfield when they encouraged a wider audience to stop and think about the produce they use at the town’s annual Fairtrade Coffee Morning. The Mayor of Macclesfield, Janet Jackson, and MP David Rutley attended and were very impressed by the knowledge and enthusiasm of All Hallows students. Chen Ji said “the work we have done so far this year has been very rewarding. I think that it is really important to raise awareness of the need for sustainable development around the world and the way we promoted this was both fun and challenging”. A Fairtrade Breakfast will be held in the All Hallows Chapel on June 15 to complete this year’s events – we look forward to seeing you there!

On Wednesday 25 March, Year 7 students welcomed the theatre company, ‘Traffic of the Stage’ who performed an exciting production of ‘Shakespeare Live!’

The show provided us with extracts from a range of Shakespeare plays including Hamlet, Taming of the Shrew, The Tempest, Othello, King Lear, Richard III, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and a particularly notable version of Macbeth in eight minutes! The performance also gave us an insight into some of the historical context of Shakespeare’s plays such as staging, the lack of female actors and details about Shakespeare’s personal life. Pupils praised the educational merit of the show as well as the entertainment value.

The performance was dynamic and interactive. We witnessed members of Year 7 participate in a heated (foam) sword fight; another donned Bottom’s head and wooed the fairy queen; Caliban and Ariel were energetically portrayed and an Oscar was awarded for the depiction of Macbeth’s dying words.

The whole experience was full of hilarity and enthusiasm on the part of the students and the actors. One student commented, ‘it was like they were performing with us, not to us!’

After the production, the actors invited a Q & A session which allowed the Year 7s to ask some very thoughtful and insightful questions about how long it took them to rehearse and how they remembered lines.

The English Department would like to thank the PTA who kindly donated the funding which allowed us to host this successful event.

FAIRTRADE finds a Hero at All Hallows.

All Hallows hosted the final of the Time to Change Competition on the 7th March where seven schools were asked to design a ‘super hero’ to promote Fair trade products. The teams were given the difficult task of designing a logo and ‘catch phrase’ which perfectly captured the terrain and climate of the Fairtrade products.

The 'Overall Winner Award' for 2015 went to Hollinhey, with St Paul's coming in as 'Runners Up' and The 'Best Team Folder Award' went to St. Gregory's. The Awards were presented by Hannah Bristow from All Hallows (Y12), who is a World Championship Sailor. As an added bonus, the competition, which started back in September 2014, raised over £1,000 for more than fifteen different charities.

This year All Hallows Business students judged the first round of the competition and acted as event organisers for the Final Celebration Day. The students did a fantastic job throughout and received excellent feedback from the competitors

and visitors who watched the presentations. The events allowed the students an opportunity to show their management potential and engage with other schools in the area. Congratulations to all students involved.

ALL HALLOW STUDENTS OVER THE MOON WITH ECLIPSE Staff at All Hallows made a special effort to help students safely experience the 87% eclipse we witnessed on the 20th March.

Britain was plunged into darkness by a breath-taking celestial event as a near-total solar eclipse almost entirely blocked out the light of the sun. The eclipse was the first in Britain this century. It was particularly effective as it coincided with the moon being at its closest approach to the earth, an event called a Super moon.

A solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and the earth, casting a shadow on the planet.

Eclipses happen on average every 18 months, but at different points on the Earth’s surface. The last total eclipse visible in the UK, which was a total eclipse in Cornwall and around 95% here, was in 1999.

Why the big fuss? Although there have been five eclipses over the UK since they have never been anywhere near as full and our weather has blocked many from view. In 1999 at the time of the last big eclipse even our oldest students would have only been two, so none of our current complement (or some younger staff) will properly remember it.

Whilst eclipses are fantastic events that some people find very dramatic, emotional and awe inspiring, they are quite dangerous. Without proper filters and glasses we could not look at, photograph or video the eclipse. Even though the disc of the sun appeared smaller, its intensity is enough to damage the retina, or a camera sensor. For this

reason we needed to make sure students could experience the eclipse safely.

Initially the moon moved across from about 8:45am here; by 9:15am it was very close to being as full as it would get and staff moved their groups outside and various ways of viewing the eclipse took place. There were many pairs of eclipse glasses and some staff used binoculars to project an image onto card. The Great British weather tried to spoil the event and there was high wispy cloud covering the sun.

With astounding luck there were enough gaps for us to see the sun and project its image. The Eclipse reached its height here around 9:30am.

It was 87% of a full eclipse, so whilst it wasn’t fully dark, several things happened. The usual call of birds around the site stopped, the light went to how you expect it to look at dusk, and there was a drop in temperature of 6 degrees measured.

Most groups then headed inside quickly to watch the live feeds on the internet in the Pharoe Islands and saw the total eclipse happen there.

We also looked with students at how attitudes to eclipses have changed over the millennia.

From being seen as harbingers of doom and signs of ill omen, they are now used to date events from history, test scientific theories and measure space. Our understanding of how they work now seems to have another effect; they cause awe and wonder and help people think about our place in the universe.

Friday 20th March was a fantastic day, experienced by us all as a community. The eclipse brought the college together for a shared life and learning experience.

AHCC National Citizens Service Graduation On 25 March 2015, the NCS Spring 2015 graduation ceremony took place at Sandbach Town Hall. There were three groups split into Crewe, Sandbach and Macclesfield sites. The NCS included a residential trip, a series of skills workshops and a social action challenge. In total, during their social action challenge, they raised over £1700 for their chosen charities. The Macclesfield group, with many All Hallows students, raised over £1000. Well done to all involved.

Since 2008, All Hallows has raised over £40,000 for All Saint’s Health and Community Centre in Manalathu.

From then the centre has built two new community rooms, toilets and a dependable source of clean, safe water. As the second largest state economy in India, why does the state of Tamil Nadu need your help?

The state has the largest number of business enterprises in India which contributes to 9.97 per cent of the total employment in the country. Tamil Nadu is the third most developed state in India with a promising future ahead, yet the literacy rate is still only 80.33%.

Unfortunately, even with a building economy, the state is still susceptible to the temperamental weather of a tropical monsoon climate. Farmers and civilians alike are reliant on monsoon rains to grow crops and feed their families. In times of drought farmers are flung into poverty and have to take desperate measures such as, selling land or finding other work, in order to survive. This can lead them to take up dangerous occupations in the informal recycling sector, where people are paid to sort through hazardous waste for recyclable materials. Drought may also cause people to become pickpockets, prostitutes or a trader of black market goods. All of these jobs leave the population vulnerable to disease and organised crime Another issue the people of Manalathu have to face, as well as the majority of India, is disease. Due to a shortage of education and treatment, there are 5.7 million people living with HIV/AIDS in India. However, a problem that is a specific problem to the people of Tamil Nadu is the dengue virus. Dengue is spread by infected mosquitoes. An infected human is bitten by a mosquito; the infected mosquito then bites another human, and the cycle continues. This is more common in Tamil Nadu as the county is littered with mountainous heaps of waste that attract mosquitoes. The disease means that children have to stay home and take care of parents instead of attending school, which limits future job opportunities.

But one of the most restrictive aspects of life for the people of Tamil Nadu is the caste system. Caste is a hierarchy in Indian society which determines what occupations you can pursue, along with who you may marry and how much you earn. Originally, the system wasn't to have a hierarchy based on occupation or birth but purely on personality; however this has been skewed somehow over time. Now caste is dictated by the occupation and caste of your parents. The rigidity of this system means it’s hard for people to move into a different caste. The lower castes or ‘untouchables’ have little chance of ever moving up in society.

Even with improved access to education the prejudices instilled by the system heavily limit the potential of lower caste areas like Tamil Nadu.

Even as India develops into a stronger, modernised country, the people are still pawns of fate. Only those lucky enough to be born in a climatic, clean area have a real chance to improve their quality of life. That is why we are striving to promote education and sanitation in villages like Manalathu. To make sure more people grow up with the opportunity to change their area for the better and sustain themselves for the entirety of their lives, regardless of location or weather.

Keep on giving and achieving to support those reliant on luck for living. Each charitable action is an opportunity for someone to live their life freely and without restraint. Please continue donating and making a change to give someone a bit of the luck you were born with.

Dear Mr Billings & Mrs Garvey and Students, Greetings to you from Ahalya Health Centre, Manalathukudisai, India.

We are happy to present to you three months (Nov, Dec, Jan) Report of our Activities in Varusanadu.

We began Phase III project in the month of November 2014. We purchased education materials such as LCD Projector, HP Note book, Tripod stand with the Screen, Amplifier with speakers, and microphone with the stand, Sony digital Camera.

On 25th November Mr.Raja trained our women leaders on the impact of early child marriage. Early girl child marriage is a serious social problem which is prevalent in many of the hamlets in Varusanadu. At the age of 12 or 13 in order to have safety and security for the girl children the parents get their children (girls) married. It has many side-effects. They become school drop outs, physically and mentally not ready to take up family responsibilities so suicide or divorce. We felt that the parents need to be trained and educated. So we educated the parents on this issue.

PRESENTATION DAY CELEBRATION

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION Children performed cultural programme, (dance, drama and songs). Children and their parents enjoyed the day with a colorful and meaningful cultural programme. We distributed prizes and sweets to all, and wished them Happy Christmas and Happy New Year 2015.

EVENING TUITION CENTRE Children are given special coaching classes in the evening, from 4.30 - 6.30pm in the training hall. They extended their gratitude to you dear friends for providing them with safe and comfortable place to study and to do their home work.

On 26/12/14, 27/12/14 a topic on ANATOMIC THERAPY By Total cost is 92,962/ equaling €1000.

Mr.Baskar was explained to the women leaders through video show. We had two days training programme on nature cure treatment. Nature cure- a drugless therapy, healing comes from within the body itself. That is to say, there are self-curative forces which are inherent in the human body working towards health and healing. 50 women participated and they found the training very useful and informative.

Adolescents Life skill training was conducted in Jeevan Jyothi Hospice by a Resource team headed by Mrs. Sumathi for two days (28th & 29th December 2014). 50 Adolescents boys and girls from 10 villages in and around Varusanadu participated. They were taught how to cope up with life difficulties. The Resource team dealt with many topics such as Personality development, Capacity building, Self Esteem, Self confidence etc. The participants were so delighted and grateful for the wonderful training.

So far we have given training to women and children. We are planning to educate the youth on “ill effects of Alcoholism” and to have a meaningful women’s day celebration on 25th March.

Cultural team will be invited to give awareness programme on Alcoholism”. On that day Human chain will take place to protest against liquor shops.

These Three months 471 poor patients from 3 villages were treated free of cost, with the money sent by you for medical purpose, through our health centre.

Hello! Since I was appointed Librarian in November 2014, I have been thoroughly enjoying the challenge of my new role at AHCC. I have been made extremely welcome by all students and staff and am trying my best to get to know as many students as possible, not just the library regulars. The library will soon be undergoing some exciting changes to make it the C21st century facility our school community deserves. I am extremely proud to be closely involved in this development. In the meantime, I am working hard to make sure that our current library is an interesting, well-resourced and organised place to read and research.

Hostage Three by Nick Lake (Suitable for Year 9 students upwards.)

The team won against Fallibroome Academy in the Cup Final on the 25 March 2015. With an amazing result of 7-3 the team were rewarded with District Cup medals and enjoyed the win!

Nominated by the sports support team and fellow players the Man of the match was given to Zachary Box who played terrifically and scored two fantastic goals for All Hallows! Goals also scored by Worthington (3), O’Connor (1) and Speed (1). Well done to all the players on a great season!

RUGBY SUCCESS AT ALL HALLOWS This year All Hallows entered sides in the U15, U13 and U12 age groups. Students competed against other schools from across the North West at Winnington Park Rugby Club.

The U15s, in their final Emerging Schools Competition, competed well against schools from winning one match, drawing two and losing to the eventual winners to finish third in their pool. They showed excellent commitment particularly after two key losing players to injury. The most valuable player was Dominic Waite, in his first ever game of rugby! The local schools development officer, Julian Guilding, was particularly impressed at how much the boys had improved since their first tournament back in year 7. A core of players have been hugely committed to rugby at college and deserve special recognition for their perseverance. They are Ethan Hardman, Chris Rigby, Tom Coates and Fred Marshall (who missed the tournament due to a series of unfortunate injuries). We look forward to the boys continuing to develop in senior rugby.

The U13s took a mixture of year 7 and 8 students to their tournament. The boys played five games on a glorious afternoon that was made for running rugby. They made excellent progress during the day, culminating in a stunning win over the Grange School at the end of the day. The boys played some excellent rugby and have laid the foundations for a good season next year. Special mentions for attendance at training throughout the year go to Harrison Waddington and Alistair Knight who have barely missed a session all year, rain, shine or snow.

An inexperienced year 7 side competed well in their Emerging Schools tournament. The boys showed excellent commitment throughout the day, especially as they were missing players due to a clash with the District football final. Many of the boys were playing in their first ever competitive rugby match and acquitted themselves well. The day ended on a real high with the boys scoring in the last minute of their last match to level the score and the game ended in a hard fought draw. The boys have the nucleus of a very good side and we hope to see them develop further over the coming year.

GSCE PE WEEKEND AWAY

Another really successful trip for 35 GCSE PE students to 'High Adventure' in Yorkshire.

Students participated in Orienteering and Mountain Biking as part of their GCSE PE programme. They obtained some excellent grades and had a great time.

It was a cold and snowy weekend but it did not stop them taking part. There were many comedy falls in the Mountain bike group - especially from Mr Slobodian!

On the Friday night, students completed the 'Labyrinth' (an underground maze) and Saturday and Sunday were filled with activities where students were learning new skills in either Orienteering or Mountain biking.

The overall attitude from the group was excellent - well done!

YEAR 10 SUCCESS Congratulations to the Year 10 students who have recently completed an ASDAN Level 1 Qualification in Sports Leadership in college through the Skill Force project. MACCLESFIELD DISTRICT TRAMOPLINING CHAMPIONS Congratulations to the Girls' Under 13 Trampolinists who won the Macclesfield District Competition yesterday at Macclesfield Academy.

Overall individual 2nd place was awarded to Rebecca Mooney in Year 7 (captain).

Our Under 15 Girls also achieved 2nd place in their competition and did really well as a team.

Well done to all girls involved. They were an absolute credit to the PE Department and Mrs Ellicott was really proud of them all!
