For this edition, I’ve decided to write a welcome with a difference, to celebrate the importance of number, and our recent successful Mathematics Survey report, which states: Almost all lessons in mathematics are characterised by a purposeful and productive atmosphere. Students enjoy tackling practical tasks and respond enthusiastically to opportunities to work together and discuss their mathematics. Teachers work hard to encourage a ‘can-do’ culture where students ‘take risks’ in learning. (28 January 2013) The numbers I’ve chosen here give an insight into the vibrant life of our college. Can you imagine a world where there were no numbers? How would we function, quantify our successes, measure our medicine, or interpret our world?

6 – The number of Career Academy UK students who have been allocated Partners in Business.

8 – The Year 10 boys football team reached the last eight/quarter final of the Cheshire Cup beating Tytherington High and Macclesfield Academy on the way.

10 – The number of primary schools involved in our exciting enterprise project called Time 2 Change.

14 – of February saw the Go Shop In The Pod in a loving make over, the total number of matches won by three Girl’s football teams.

15 – The

number of charities supported by the Time 2 Change project.

17 – The number of attendees at a Languages teachers conference held in the Romero Centre.

18 – The temperature in Malinitz, Austria for our Ski-trippers, the amount in pounds raised for the India appeal by Year 7 students on a Mother’s Day enterprise, the number of exercise stations which will be in our Olympic Gym.

22 – The total number of Netball matches played by All Hallows girls – of which an incredible fourteen were won by our teams!

40 – The number of days in Lent, which began with our Taizé-style Ash Wednesday Service and in which we also had services of reconciliation before started the Easter holiday.

50 – It’s fifty years since All Hallows opened and the golden jubilee is celebrated with the installation a new Jesus Cross and mission statement near the college entrance.

98 – the percentage of parents on the OfSTED Parent View survey who would recommend our college to another parent. Also the percentage of parents who agree/strongly agree that their child is taught well at All Hallows.

125 – The number of Year 9 students who took over workplaces as part of a young peoples’ Take Over Day.

300 – the number of acres the Jaguar factory covers, visited by our students as part of a STEM project.

02

410 – The number of Year 7 and 8 students who watched a play called Smashed on the dangers, myths and misconceptions of underage alcohol drinking.

500 – The cash prize won by two of our students to support enterprise activities in our college.

650 – In thousands, the population of Málaga, the place visited by languages students visiting our Spanish partner school.

Now go and read the stories in our magazine and imagine how much less sense our world would make without numbers to explain, interpret and describe things! If you have something about our college or our world that you think is best described or celebrated in numbers let me know and we may include the article in the next edition of Aspire. Perhaps this could be new regular section of our magazine?

Golden Jubilee Jesus Cross Arrives We are delighted to finally have in place this new cross together with the words of our mission statement at the front of our College. The cross design was discovered by a group of staff and students who visited a Catholic Cathedral Bookshop during a visit to the All Saints Clinic Project in Tamil Nadu, India.

The design has the name ‘Jesus’ across the horizontal beam and the middle S forms the shape of his body or ‘corpus’, making this a modern version of the crucifix – a cross with a body on it. This cross has been chosen to represent that all are welcome in Jesus’ name in our Catholic College. This cross brings together the Catholic tradition of the crucifix with the more Protestant tradition of an ‘empty’ cross with no corpus on it. Whatever your preference, the message is that all 04

Christians are united in Christ.

Surrounding the cross we have the powerful words ‘Aspire not to have more but to be more’ from the Latin American Archbishop, Oscar Romero, who was martyred because he put the gospel into action and stood up for the poor and those on the margins of society. These are words which remind us that the heart of the Gospel is about living Jesus’ ethical way of life, and becoming the best we can be in the service of God and each other. This is something we try to do everyday at All Hallows through our values of honourable purpose, respect, compassion, co-operation and stewardship, through our acts of kindness and Pay It Forward.

Young Starship Enterprise Competition Eight teams of students from All Hallows presented 'Dragons' Den style' pitches to a distinguished panel of judges in February. The judges included David Gooda, Chair Peaks and Plains Housing Trust, Tim Pinder, CEO, Peaks and Plains Housing Trust, Greg Bones, Director of Resources, Peaks and Plains Housing Trust, Jacqui Sinnott-Lacey, Director of Operations, Peaks and Plains Housing Trust, Nigel Bennett, Assistant Director of Partnerships, Peaks and Plains Housing Trust, Matt Wakeman, Associate Director, Barclays Bank, Jon Harris, CEO, Macclesfield Town Football Club and Jan Gregory, local entrepreneur. The teams had all spent several months preparing a business plan and marketing strategy for their own business ideas. The competition was tough and all teams impressed the judges immensely. The team that finally came out on top was 'The House Rules', an enterprise idea presented by Rebecca Lynch and Jessica Ainsworth (Year 9).

The unique social enterprise idea these students came up with, is based on creating an educational resource for primary schools, to teach young children about 'safety in the home'. Their vision is to make a three dimensional, flat pack house, 'The House Rules', that can be transported to different primary schools. The house will come with a range of educational resources to teach KS1 and KS2 pupils about health and safety issues at home. Rebecca and Jessica won a substantial cash prize with ÂŁ500 going to All Hallows to support enterprise initiatives. This is only the start of what could be a bright future for these two enteprising students. Peaks and Plains hope to make their vision a reality as they now take their 06

idea through to the next round of The Young Starship Enterprise Competition to be held at Old Trafford Football Club later in the year. In this round they will represent Peaks and Plains Housing Trust and compete against other schools from across the North West of England who have won their rounds with different housing trusts in The Airport Group.

The Time 2 Change Project The Time 2 Change Project was recently celebrated in The Romero Centre with ten local primary schools sending their winning teams to compete in a 'final showdown' during Fairtrade Fortnight. The challenge set was to design a mode of transport for a named foreign country that was fit for purpose in being able to transport Fairtrade products, taking into account terrain, climate and other factors.

Teams had to purchase resources and materials using the appropriate foreign language and also redesign the country's flag to incorporate a fairtrade theme. There was a requirement that the newly designed flag should appear somewhere on the mode of transport. With each team working on a different country, pupils 08

came up with a fantastic range of ideas for how Fairtrade products could be transported including sledge-like transport and balloon powered vehicles!

Judges, Pete Pealing of Peaks and Plains Housing Trust and Tom Agar of MS Events Ltd. had a difficult job choosing a winner, as the standard was so high across all the schools that took part. In the end, after careful examination of all the vehicles, presentations from each team and some tough questioning, The 'Overall Winner Award' for 2013 went to St. Gregory's, with Gawsworth coming in as 'Runners Up' and The 'Best Team Log Award' went to St. Alban's.

As an added bonus, the competition, which started back in September 2012, raised over ÂŁ2,000 for more than 15 different charities. Year 12 BTEC Business students who judged the first round of the competition in the primary schools acted as event organisers for the Final Celebration Day. They did a fantastic job throughout the planning stages and on the day itself, gaining excellent feedback from the competitors and visitors who watched the presentations. The whole project has demonstrated how well enterprise activities work when Sixth Form Business students combine their talents with the talents of young entrepreneurs still in primary school.

Smashed!

As part of their PSME programme Year 7 and 8 students were invited to explore issues surrounding the dangers of underage drinking through participation in an interactive drama production and workshop.

The students enjoyed the play and had an opportunity to reflect on and challenge stereo types, myths and misconceptions surrounding alcohol.

A 'Valentine' Make-Over for Go Shop The student-led Management Team of Go Shop literally 'rose' to the challenge of addressing the Valentine Market by selling beautifully hand-wrapped single red 'roses' on 14 February 2013. The Pod was decorated with giant red hearts to attract the attention of students and teachers and quickly became a 'hive' of activity as the 'roses' went on sale. Half the roses sold out immediately, with the other half selling easily throughout lunch time. The Management Team are Year 13 Level 3 BTEC Business students who are studying units in Business Planning and Developing Teams in Business. They have risen to many challenges so far this year and all their efforts not only benefit students in college, but also provide evidence for their coursework. At the same time, alongside the sale of 'roses', GO-BITE, a team of Year 8 BITE students who have set up a Young Co-operative with their teacher Mr Blades sold a batch of strawberry lip balm, on a 'valentine' theme, which was hand-made using wax from the College's bees. Another Year 8 Young Co-operative sold cakes decorated with hearts. All these enterprise activities support fundraising for The India Clinic Appeal!

Ski Trip Austria 2013 On the 15 February, 27 students from Year 8 up to Year 13 set off on a journey to Mallnitz in Austria for 6 days of skiing, accompanied by Miss Thomason, Mr Lees and Mrs Marsh.

We arrived 24 hours later on the Saturday and settled into our hotel and our surroundings. We were all kitted out with our skis, boots, poles and helmets ready for our first day of skiing on the Sunday.

Throughout the week we skied for 4 hours per day with our ski instructors Katarina, Philippe and Martin. We had some very sunny

days and some very snowy days but on average the temperature was around -18. The skiing was excellent!

In the evening we did several activities which included curling, going out for a pizza, shopping, a quiz night and going to a traditional Austrian restaurant for traditional sweets and pastries!

After our final day of skiing we all packed up, returned our equipment and got back on the coach for another long journey to return to school on Saturday 23 February.

A great trip was had by all!

Jaguar Factory Production Tour As part of a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) project at All Hallows Catholic College, a group of our Year 12 students studying Physics and KS3 Science club members had the opportunity to visit the Jaguar factory in Halewood. The manufacturing space at the Jaguar factory covers 300 acres and employs approximately 2,000 employees. The visit to the Jaguar factory was an exciting experience for our students. They took part in a tour of the production factory to see the advanced design and technology of the assembly line of robots and employees used to build a Land Rover from the very beginning of blocks of steel to the final prestigious product.

All Hallows is extremely proud of the students that attended the visit and as they were a real credit to the College. The staff at Jaguar commented on how well behaved and well mannered our young people were. We have been welcomed back anytime and we are planning a return trip for the summer term. The next trip will be aimed at science club members and triple science students. So thank you to our students for making this a great day! The trip was a great success as it has inspired our students to see the possible career prospects that they can aspire to and opened their eyes to what can be achieved by using their enterprise skills.

Call to Stewardship....

Throughout Lent, students continued their support for phase 2 of the India project raising over £2200 through form tutor collections and individual form fundraising activities including an Easter Egg Hunt, Year 5 Disco, Pancake breakfast, Cake Sales, Ice Cream stall and various Raffles. Students who made a significant contribution have been entered into a draw for tickets to the Cinema.... Watch this space... The winner could be you!

Our Ewes Are Expecting!

We hope to have lambs in our sheep paddock soon. Bilbo, our ram took quickly to his role upon his arrival in December and we hope to see lambs by the end of May. Health Advice It is advised that anyone who is pregnant should avoid all contact with sheep / lambs during pregnancy.

Students Take Over the Workplace Year 9 students at All Hallows Catholic College were recently given the opportunity to take over the workplace and work with adults for the day. In the end 125 students were involved and spent the day in a wide variety of workplaces with family members and with staff in the college; including airports, cabinet makers, residential nursing homes, hairdressers, shops, restaurants and many more.

Martin Blades, Assistant Principal, said “Students who got involved benefited from the opportunity to experience the world of work and make their voices heard, while the adults may have gained a fresh perspective on what they do. It has been very successful and the students came back to college excited about the day and wanting to repeat it again�.

Partners in Business for Year 12 CAUK Business Students The Mentoring Programme that forms part of the Careers Academy UK (CAUK) programme got off to a good start in February, with six Year 12 BTEC Business and A level Economics and Business students being matched with 'Partners in Business'. A Partner in Business is a volunteer who provides a Career Academy student with support, friendship, reinforcement and constructive examples from their experiences that can help students learn.

The Partners in Business were formally inducted into The programme with the support of Ian Nichol, Regional Manager for CAUK before being introduced to the students in The Romero Centre at All Hallows. Students have been matched with the following mentors: 20

As the relationship grows and develops, both the student and Partner in Business benefit. The student has the opportunity to reflect on the learning going on in their studies, develop social and workplace skills, and sound off to an adult that isn't a teacher or a parent! A Partner in Business has opportunity to find out more about education today, while practising and developing a set of skills and behaviours that are of professional use within their own organisation.

Mother's Day Celebrated in Go Shop Year 7 students are following the new 'Enterprise' curriculum and one class, led by Miss L Nixon, were challenged to make handmade Mother's Day gifts to go on sale in Go Shop. This was a fantastic opportunity to put lesson theory into action and provide a trial run for their own enterprise projects, which will be available in the Go Shop towards the end of March. Large yellow flowers decorated The Pod to draw attention to this Mother's Day Venture. The effort put in by the students not only making the gifts, but also on the day was brilliant, with a great range of gifts including heart shaped chocolates, cards and origami flowers.

In total ÂŁ18.23 was raised, of which 33% was donated to the India Clinic Appeal.

¡Hola Málaga!

Students and staff of languages were delighted to visit our partner school in Malaga, Spain. For the first time, our Year 11 and A level students were able to discover the secret corners of Malaga and take part in the festivities our partner school hosted.

All the students agreed that it was a fantastic experience and highlighted how great it was to practise their Spanish in a real context as well developing knowledge of the cultural elements of the Spanish people.

All Hallows Hosts Language Teaching Development Event All Hallows maintained its commitment to supporting the delivery of MFL within the local area as part of our Language College status by hosting a dissemination event for the CfBT (National Trust for Education services) The projects that were disseminated included a MFL "spontaneous speech" project KS4-5 MFL transition project, and a project on introducing and developing language learning at primary level. Each project has involved nine months of research and planning in conjunction with other schools from the Silk Teaching School Alliance.

Miss White, Faculty Leader for MFL, also fedback the findings from the action research that she has completed as part of the CfBT project and which has been published nationally by the CfBT and the DfE. The day was attended by 17 delegates from local secondary and primary school teachers including Miss White and Mrs Humphreys from All Hallows who shared the resources and findings from their respective projects.

The outcomes of the projects will undoubtedly help to further embed the best teaching and learning practice and most importantly help All Hallows students to achieve even better results in their language learning.

Community Cohesion — Valuing Difference As part of the Sixth Form General RE programme students had the opportunity to learn from Buddhist Teacher Munisha at the Manchester Buddhist Centre. Sixth Form Students learnt about the daily practices, rituals and beliefs of Buddhism before experiencing a Buddhist style meditation.

Students are the Stars of the Annual Cheshire East Headteacher Conference All Hallows students attended the annual Cheshire East Headteachers’ conference at Cranage Hall as ‘Lead Learners’. Their mission was to show how effective teaching and learning happens in the college by sharing the principles and learning structures of ‘The Teacher Effectiveness Enhancement Programme’ or TEEP for short. Conference Chair and Head of Wilmslow High, Mrs Gill Bremner, described the students as conference ‘Stars’, commenting on how well they had shared their favourite lessons with the Headteachers’ and Principals.

Prior to attending the conference they had approached teachers for plans of favoured lessons and other resources so they could ‘deliver’ the lessons, showing in a practical way, which techniques really work well. Then student ‘stars’, equipped with laptops and other resources, gave their lessons to the Headteachers with great confidence! Chen Ji, a Year 7 student, shared her favourite Science lesson and engaged the delegates in making their very own fossils, while Alfie Tyldesley, also in Year 7, showed his best 26

Mathematics lesson teaching the Headteachers’ a key mathematical concept through a song! Meanwhile, Sixth Formers, Rachel Hemy and Ria Hubbard, who are trained Language Leaders, taught a lesson they had planned and delivered to local primary school pupils which has used the TEEP Learning Cycle.

Deputy Principal, Mrs Connor, who also works as the National Co-ordinator for TEEP, working with the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust said; ‘We could not have been more proud of our students – their enthusiasm for learning in the TEEP way was infectious and they were confident ambassadors for the TEEP development programme which is being rolled out to hundreds of schools nationally.’ Principal, Mr Billings said ‘Since the conference took place in February there have been more enquiries from schools wishing to receive TEEP training. We are passionate about this programme making a real difference to the learning lives of both students and their teachers. The next time our trainers go out to schools – they may be taking our students with them!’

All Hallows is one of only three National TEEP Champion Schools.

The TEEP programme, which was developed by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation, is a not-forprofit programme. It is based in academic research into what makes teaching and learning most effective.

The programme is helping many schools achieve the highest grades for teaching in OfSTED inspections.

Lent and Easter 2013 Ash Wednesday Lent 2013 began on 13 February with three Ash Wednesday Services for all year groups and staff.

This year the liturgies all had a unique international flavour using candles, icons and the simple songs or ‘chants’ developed by the monastic community of Taizé.

We entered a candle-lit, darkened College hall, and listened to the words of scripture: "Even now, come back to me with all your heart. Fast, cry, and be sad." Tearing your clothes is not enough to show you are sad; let your heart be broken. Come back to the Lord your God, because he is kind and shows mercy. He doesn't become angry quickly, and he has great love and compassion.” (Joel) We received the ashes on our foreheads in the sign of the cross with the words ‘Turn away from sin and believe in the gospel’.

Then we reflected on where we go wrong, our need for forgiveness and our commitments for Lent, using small pieces of ‘sack-cloth’, recalling past-times when people wore sackcloth and ashes, as a sign of sorrow. We removed a strand of the cloth representing our Lenten promise and placed it onto the cross on the sackcloth asking Jesus to stay close to us during Lent. Everyone placed the piece of cloth in their blazer pockets, to stay there throughout Lent. The Liturgy was very moving with the Worship Music Group leading us beautifully and helping to create a very reflective atmosphere.

Reconciliation Services At the end of Lent, on Maundy Thursday, which was our last day of term, we gathered again; this time for our Reconciliation Services. We were delighted to have the support of local priests to hear individual confessions. Mrs Garvey led a reflection on the Samaritan Woman at The Well and showed a contemporary You-Tube poem-clip which imagined how the woman must have felt when she encountered Jesus, who said he would give her ‘Living Water’. All students and staff were greatly blessed by the opportunity to share one thing for which they would like to be forgiven, through the ministry of the priests acting in Jesus’ name.

Recommended Reads KS3 ’Gone’ by Michael Grant is a book I would definitely recommend. Sam is an ordinary boy who loves surfing with his mate Quinn. However, all the adults on the earth unexpectedly disappear and a wall is formed around Perdilo Beach, the town Sam lives in. This new age is called the FAYZ: Fallout Alley Youth Zone. Sam is made a leader of the new town, but he holds a secret that no-one else knows about, that will only reveal itself when he becomes angry. But what Sam doesn’t know is that he isn’t the only one with special powers…

Patrick Penny, Year 7 KS4 ’The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ is an emotional and moving novel that should be read by everyone. The main character is a young boy called Bruno who lives in Berlin, Germany, during the Second World War. One day Bruno’s family move into a new house and he meets a very unexpected next door neighbour. The book has a particularly dramatic twist in the tale and I guarantee you will not want to put it down!

Olympic Legacy Outdoor Gym We are delighted to announce that work has begun on our new Olympic Legacy funded Outdoor Gym. When completed this facility will provide another teaching space for physical education - with 18 exercise stations and an extended area for exercise markings. Eventually we hope to have an outdoor cover over the area to make it useable in all weather! If you or anyone you know would like to make a donation we would be very pleased to receive it. We are getting costings for the project and think we will need to raise around £20,000. This would make a great alumni fund-raising project for anyone who has fond memories of their PE at All Hallows! We are also hopeful that the PTA will be able to make a contribution.

Mr Billings, Principal said; “It is great to have work started on this project, the gym will be a great asset to our College and will also be used by the wider community to compliment a whole range of sporting events as we develop our facilities to include a 3G pitch, a new Cricket wicket and a changing pavilion.”

The College’s new Outdoor Activity Gym will be ready by the beginning of May. A full report in next issue!

Year 10 football Congratulations to the Year 10 Football Team who have just finished their best season yet. The boys should be proud of all their performances this year.

The team reached the last 8 (quarter final stage) of the Cheshire Cup - a fantastic achievement with over 40 schools entering. Unfortunately, they 34

were beaten by a very strong team from the Wirral. They also reached the final of a very competitive District Cup competition beating Tytherington and Macclesfield Academy on the way. Unfortunately they were beaten by a stronger Wilmslow side on the day following a very competitive match. We'll go one better next year!!

Year 10 Students Lead Year 7 Basket Ball Club Chris Sibbett, Sam Guillon and Ed Taylor Brown in Year 10 have been assisting the coaching of Year 7 students at the Monday lunchtime Basketball Club. Girls Football This year the girls' football teams took part in a tournament against other schools from the Macclesfield area. The girls have played some very exciting football and have done the college proud. Well done girls!
