COLLEGE PRAYER

SPECIALISM SUCCESS Congratulations to all Y13 BTEC Business Career Ready students who have successfully completed 4-6 week paid internships over the summer with a range of local businesses including Astra Zeneca, NHS, Royal Bank of Scotland, Bank of New York Mellon, Peaks and Plains Housing Trust and Chrome Motors. Without exception every student received exceptional feedback. At the end of their internship they delivered formal presentations to Business Managers and Directors for which they all received high praise. Some have been offered further opportunities as a result of their successful experiences and other have decided to adapt or change career routes as a result.

Prayer for the new College year Dear Lord, Bless us as we start this new College year. Help us to make the most of every opportunity that comes our way. May we show love, respect and compassion to one another. May the new beginning of this year remind us that you always give us the opportunity to start afresh. Protect us and guide us Lord and help us to live as you would want us to. We ask this in the unity of the Holy Spirit, through Christ Our Lord.

TRANSPORT

PARENTS AS PARTNERS Welcome back and well done to all our students for a fantastic start to the year. Great attitudes, excellent behaviour and very smart uniform. We are looking forward to working with you all this year.To avoid congestion at the start and end of the day, the College would be grateful if parents could not drop off and collect children from either the bus turning circle or Brooklands Avenue car park.

The College has regrettably had to make an increase in bus fares in order to cover the increasing costs of the school bus service. As well as the contributions from parents via passes and daily fares, the College makes a significant contribution to the annual cost of the bus service. There have been a number of increases in those costs, including those arising from the mandatory implementation of the national living wage earlier this year and the College is not able to absorb all of the increase, hence the recent changes to fares.

Please note that the daily return fare on the school bus is now ÂŁ4.

A daily single fare is ÂŁ3.

OPERATION ENCOMPASS All Hallows Catholic College will again continue to be involved this year in a project that a number of schools in Halton, Warrington, Cheshire West & Chester and Cheshire East will be participating in.

The project, called Operation Encompass, is being run in partnership with Cheshire Police. The project aims to support children who are affected by domestic abuse.

Following a domestic abuse incident, the Police will make contact with the school and communicate relevant information to nominated school staff, to ensure that the school are made aware early enough to support children and young people in a way that means they feel safe and included.

Our College has staff (Mr Blades, Mrs Garvey and Mrs Shatwell) who are trained to liaise with the police, when required, whilst ensuring support is available to the child.

We are committed to working in partnership, to safeguard and protect children across Cheshire and provide the best possible care and support for our students.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS As part of our continued drive to improve student punctuality across Y7-13 we will continue to run a punctuality detention.

Any student with 2+ late marks in a week (Mon-Fri) will be expected to attend the detention the following THURSDAY in the LRC top floor. Detentions start on 15 September.

CHANGES TO ATTENDANCE POLICY From September 2015 the College changed the definition of “persistent absence” we use to include those students who are under 90% attendance. This is in line with national guidelines and increased the threshold from 85% at present.

MEDICAL ABSENCE FROM COLLEGE Whilst the College requires parents to contact us on each day of absence, school policy now requires that any student who accumulates 7 or more days of absence during the course of the academic year will be asked to provide medical confirmation of the need to be absent before any further absences are authorised for medical reasons. This is a necessary measure as we closely monitor absence due to illness / medical reasons in order that we can ensure students are supported where needed.

For your information medical confirmation does not have to be a doctor's note but can also take the form of a medical appointment card, a copy of a relevant dated prescription or evidence of medication being taken.

If no medical evidence is provided then the absence will be coded as unauthorised. Ten or more unauthorised absences may result in you receiving a Fixed Penalty Notice. This incurs a penalty of £60 per parent / carer to be paid within 21 days, otherwise the penalty will rise to £120 per parent / carer to be paid within 28 days. If the penalty remains unpaid then the matter will proceed to the Magistrates Court where you will receive a criminal record if you are found guilty.

The link between attendance and achievement is well researched and documented and students should be aiming for an attendance rate of no less than 97% over the year. Thank you for your continued support with this importance issue.

MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS DURING THE COLLEGE DAY Students must sign out at the Attendance Office before leaving College to attend a medical appointment. When they return to College the student must sign back in. This ensures registers will be accurate and we know the student is off site should we have a fire alarm.

The Attendance Office is located in an office along the RE corridor. We thank parents for making medical appointments, where possible, that do not take up a whole day of schooling. This often allows a student to have their legal registration mark for both morning and afternoon sessions and so their overall attendance does not fall.

HOLIDAY ABSENCE FROM COLLEGE Holiday absence from College - please see our website for an update on holidays regarding the recent High Court ruling.

Holidays have not been authorised since 1st September 2013 under legislation on all English schools. Requests for holidays must still be made in writing to the appropriate Key Stage leader (Mrs Garvey KS5, Mr Blades KS4/KS3), but in the vast majority of cases they will be unauthorised. CAREERS ADVICE FOR STUDENTS If any parent would like their son or daughter to have a careers interview with Mrs Pilling, our Careers Advisor, this year then please notify the relevant Year Learning Leader who can ensure names are added to the list. Mrs Pilling will prioritise Year 10-13, but students in Years 7-9 are welcome to attend her Thursday lunch time drop in. She uses the Student Support Office based next door to Music.

BEING PUNCTUAL AT ALL HALLOWS Most students appreciate the importance of being in College on time. Children who are regularly late do miss out on their education and form bad habits that will not be tolerated in the workplace.

We need to inform parents that students must be in the registration form class for the register to be taken at 8.45a.m. This means students should arrive 5-10 minutes earlier in College to be on time.

Any student who arrives after 8.45a.m. will receive a L code. Two L codes within a week will result in a whole college detention to be held each Thursday.

Any student who arrives after 9.05a.m. will receive a U code. This means they will be classed as absent for the whole morning and this may have consequences for overall attendance.

We are aware that College buses are sometimes late and we can confirm these students are not negatively marked in the register when this happens.

Thank you for your co-operation in this matter.

Gates are manned by members of staff and names will be taken of those students who are late.

JPII SPORTS FACILICTIES Macclesfield Town Football Club have embarked on a successful football academy in partnership with All Hallows Catholic College. The academy is for dedicated young players who want to continue playing at a high level whilst furthering their academic education. This new working partnership has created a special opportunity for young academy players to represent Macclesfield Football Academy & the Football Club while developing and supporting their academic and career development.

About the Academy Players can be selected to represent the programme in a number of different competitions, including firstly; British Colleges FA competition, the Football Conference Youth Alliance and ultimately The FA Youth Cup. This provides our players with a great opportunity to develop as footballers as well as gaining vital academic qualifications. The partnership has been vigilantly constructed to provide a supportive environment for players to fulfill their potential, including help and assistance for senior staff working at Macclesfield Town Football Club.

Entry Requirements: Aged 16-18 at the start of the programme to play in fixtures.

LIBRARY IMPROVEMENTS Over the summer the Site Team have worked hard to transform the library into a lighter and brighter space, with new colour walls and carpeting! I am now working on developing the role the library has in supporting our students and staff in their learning and teaching.

ROALD DAHL 100 September 13th is the centenary of much loved author, Roald Dahl's birthday. To celebrate we have a display in the library, a wide selection of books and a quiz trail with prizes.

RECOMMENDED READ Author of the Month for September is Roald Dahl.

This week's recommended read is the classic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Why not revisit this fantastic book? Join Charlie Bucket on his journey in the amazing world of Willy Wonka and his scrumptious sweets and chocolates.
