COLLEGE PRAYER

SPECIALISM SUCCESS Congratulations to Patrick Jennings, Y13 BTEC Business student who delivered an outstanding presentation to an audience of business mentors in The Romero Centre last week. His presentation was based on his work with The Bank of New York Mellon where he completed a six week, paid internship in the summer as part of The Career Ready programme. The quality of his presentation reflected the degree to which he became immersed within the organisation. The mentors present are partnered with students from both All Hallows and Tytherington High School. Patrick is partnered with Steven Morris from Astra Zeneca. At the end of his presentation, Patrick answered a range of questions from the audience about his experience with the bank. After the presentations, students met with their mentors for a meeting to get the new school year underway. Students will now continue to meet their mentors throughout their Year 13 studies, gaining assistance with personal statements for UCAS applications, careers advice and visits to workplaces of mentors.

RISING STARS IN MATHS A number of Year 8 students started the 'Rising Stars in Maths' programme last week, working through maths challenges and puzzles on a Thursday morning.

Next week some of our year 13 Mathematicians will be joining them to work together on the challenges!

Parents are requested to remind their children that they should make their way directly to College in the mornings and should not be gathering in groups in areas such as The Flower Pot car park.

Thank you for your co-operation in this matter, which will help both the College and local businesses/residents.

MACMILLIAN COFFEE MORNING On Friday 30 September, the Leadership Team, Associate Staff and members of Sixth Form hosted another successful coffee morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

There was a magnificent array of scrumptious cake on offer, many of which were homemade by members of staff. It was a lovely opportunity for staff to sit down, chat, relax and of course, enjoy sampling the cake.

A grand total of £356.72 (not including Gift Aid) was raised, £20 of which was donated by Sixth Form Business students who were given a 12hr fundraising challenge by Mrs Lynch.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS Over the last week of College attendance was as follows: Year 7 - 97.0% (down 0.3% on last week) Year 8 - 96.0% (up 0.4%, well done Year 8) Year 9 - 93.4% (down 1.7%) Year 10 - 93.0% (down 1.7%) Year 11 -95.8% (up 0.8%, well done Year 11) Year 12 - 98.2% (up 0.1%, well done Year 12) Year 13 - 93.2% (down 1.4%) Attendance between Year 7 and Year 11 last week was 95.0% (down from 95.7% and 0.7% lower than the same time last year). We aim for 97% attendance.

Last week GIRLS attendance (Years 7-11) was 95.1% (down 0.4%), BOYS attendance (Years 7-11) was 94.9% (down 1.1%) .

CHANGES TO ATTENDANCE POLICY From September 2015 the College changed the definition of “persistent absence” we use to include those students who are under 90% attendance. This is in line with national guidelines and increased the threshold from 85% at present.

MEDICAL ABSENCE FROM COLLEGE Whilst the College requires parents to contact us on each day of absence, school policy now requires that any student who accumulates 7 or more days of absence during the course of the academic year will be asked to provide medical confirmation of the need to be absent before any further absences are authorised for medical reasons. This is a necessary measure as we closely monitor absence due to illness / medical reasons in order that we can ensure students are supported where needed.

For your information medical confirmation does not have to be a doctor's note but can also take the form of a medical appointment card, a copy of a relevant dated prescription or evidence of medication being taken.

If no medical evidence is provided then the absence will be coded as unauthorised. Ten or more unauthorised absences may result in you receiving a Fixed Penalty Notice. This incurs a penalty of £60 per parent / carer to be paid within 21 days, otherwise the penalty will rise to £120 per parent / carer to be paid within 28 days. If the penalty remains unpaid then the matter will proceed to the Magistrates Court where you will receive a criminal record if you are found guilty.

The link between attendance and achievement is well researched and documented and students should be aiming for an attendance rate of no less than 97% over the year. Thank you for your continued support with this importance issue.

MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS DURING THE COLLEGE DAY Students must sign out at the Attendance Office before leaving College to attend a medical appointment. When they return to College the student must sign back in. This ensures registers will be accurate and we know the student is off site should we have a fire alarm. The Attendance Office is located in an office along the RE corridor. We thank parents for making medical appointments, where possible, that do not take up a whole day of schooling. This often allows a student to have their legal registration mark for both morning and afternoon sessions and so their overall attendance does not fall.

HOLIDAY ABSENCE FROM COLLEGE Holiday absence from College - please see our website for an update on holidays regarding the recent High Court ruling.

Holidays have not been authorised since 1st September 2013 under legislation on all English schools. Requests for holidays must still be made in writing to the appropriate Key Stage leader (Mrs Garvey KS5, Mrs Marshall or Mr Blades KS4/KS3), but in the vast majority of cases they will be unauthorised. CAREERS ADVICE FOR STUDENTS If any parent would like their son or daughter to have a careers interview with Mrs Pilling, our Careers Advisor, this year then please notify the relevant Year Learning Leader who can ensure names are added to the list. Mrs Pilling will prioritise Year 1013, but students in Years 7-9 are welcome to attend her Thursday lunch time drop in. She uses the Student Support Office based next door to Music.

BEING PUNCTUAL AT ALL HALLOWS Most students appreciate the importance of being in College on time. Children who are regularly late do miss out on their education and form bad habits that will not be tolerated in the workplace.

We need to inform parents that students must be in the registration form class for the register to be taken at 8.45a.m. This means students should arrive 5-10 minutes earlier in College to be on time.

Any student who arrives after 8.45a.m. will receive a L code. Two L codes within a week will result in a whole college detention to be held each Thursday.

Any student who arrives after 9.05a.m. will receive a U code. This means they will be classed as absent for the whole morning and this may have consequences for overall attendance.

We are aware that College buses are sometimes late and we can confirm these students are not negatively marked in the register when this happens.

Gates are manned by members of staff and names will be taken of those students who are late.

RESULTS Football: All Hallows played for the ESFA U14s Competition Round 2 against Failsworth High School winning 4-2. The scorers were Liam Worthington, Alistair Nickson, Zach Box and Rocco Fregepane. Man of the Match was Charles Chilufya.

Congratulations to the boys for progressing to the next round!

All Hallows Year 11 football team played at an away game against Sir Thomas Boughey for the English school cup round 2 . All Hallows won 1-0, the scorer of the goal and man of the match was Luke Boyle. There were also excellent performances from Alfie Tyldsley and James Chadwick. Well done to all boys on a great first performance this year. Good luck in Round 3!

On Thursday 6 October the away game at Brine Leas was cancelled, therefore All Hallows Year 11 football were awarded the tie and progress to Cheshire cup fixture Round 3.

Years 9/10 football played at home against The Blue coat School and lost 5 – 0, Player of the match was Jemma Davies for her debut performance who made some great saves whilst in net.

Netball: All Hallows Years 7 – 11 Netball played at home against Macclesfield Academy. Year 7 A won 17 – 0 player of the match was Aaliyah Madden. Year 7 B Won 19 – 1, player of the match was Maddie Idehen. Year 8 Lost 5 – 10 player of the match was India Wilson. Year 9 lost 13 – 14 player of the match was Molly Mcknicholas. Year 10 played Macclesfield Academy’s Year 11 and won 13 – 9 player of the match was Katie Whyatt.

UPCOMING FIXTURES Netball—All years will be playing at home on the 12 October against Tytherington High School. The matches are due to start at 3.50pm the order of play will be 1st – Seniors, 10’s and 7A, 2nd – 7B, 8s and 9s.

Years 8/9 Football will be playing an away game at Lymm High School on Thursday 13 October for the ESFA Round 2.

BUZZ BOOKS All our Year 7 students will shortly be receiving a free book from the selection offered by the Bookbuzz Scheme. The book choices will be introduced to students in their library lessons, the order will be placed and arrive in school sometime in November. We subscribe to the scheme to promote a love of reading amongst our students and it is part of our 'Reading Matters' philosophy at AHCC.
