SPECIALISM SUCCESS Linguists across all Key Stages in the Languages Department use www.memrise.com to consolidate and extend their learning of key vocabulary and phrases.

Teachers can monitor the progress of each student and each class has a leader board. Whilst once a seemingly laborious task for the students, the new interactive method and the element of competition has made vocabulary learning extremely enjoyable and teachers are seeing the benefit in classwork and especially in the most recent assessments. www.memrise.com is a free tool with a handy app, why not give it a go in your subject?

PARENTS AS PARTNERS OUTDOOR WEAR Now winter is here, we ask for the support of parents in ensuring that College policy is carried out regarding suitable black coats and scarves. Coats must be a black rain jacket that can be worn over a blazer and embroidered with the College badge for all Year 7 - 10 students. Smaller jackets or hoodies are not allowed.

Scarves must be dark, plain, functional and not a fashion style scarf. Students should not wear scarves and coats in the main College buildings during the day

MEMORIAL MASS All are welcome to attend a Memorial Mass for Mr Dave Hall on Wednesday November 30 at 3.00pm in the Main Hall, followed by refreshments.

Prayer on Youth Sunday, Feast of Christ the King May our Lord bless and protect our young people, our children. May He always guide and protect them so that they will not fall into danger. May He protect their steps, their studies, their play, and their travels. May the Holy Spirit guide their minds and their hearts, so that they grow in knowledge and wisdom. May Jesus stand as their light and way of life, with His gospel as their guide. May their parents and the adults in their lives be right and worthy examples of Christian life. We ask all this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

FAMILY HOLIDAY ASSOCIATION Family Holiday Association – Holiday Grant (UK) If any parents believe they are entitled to the grant below then please speak to your child's Year Learning Leader and an application will be made on your behalf.

Statement from the FHA The Family Holiday Association (FHA) has announced that its funding programme open for applications. Through its funding programme families on a low income, that have not been on holiday for the past four years and have at least one child between three and 18 years of age can obtain financial support for a break during 2016 and 2017.

The FHA can only accept applications from referring agents (such as a teacher, social worker or health visitor, etc) and not directly from families.

The holidays provided in the UK. Holidays breaks include free accommodation, linen rental, entertainment passes and holiday insurance (subject to medical conditions). FHA may also make a contribution towards the family's holiday expenses. To be eligible families must be on a low income (household income must be less than £24,000), not be going on holiday this year and be unlikely to afford a day out.

Thus, the Obote family lost their mother after a long illness…It was such a painful experience for Dad and the two children, Odean and Ida. Thankfully, the Family Holiday Association was able to offer the family a much-needed break, and time to come to terms with their bereavement.

Christmas shopping trip Thursday 24th November to the Trafford Centre and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the Lowry Theatre are now available on Parent pay. Harry Potter World trip will soon be on sale - please see Mrs Heaton for further details.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS Over the last week of College attendance was as follows: Year 7 - 96.1% (up 0.5% on last week) Year 8 - 95.0% (up 1.6%) Year 9 - 95.6% (up 2.0%) Year 10 - 95.6% (up 3.2%) Year 11 -97.7% (up 3.6% and the best attendance of any year group since week 2 in September) Year 12 - 95.9% (up 0.9%) Year 13 - 95.4% (up 1.8%) Attendance between Year 7 and Year 11 last week was 96.0% (up 2.2% on last week and exactly the same % as the same time last year). We aim for 97% attendance.

Last week GIRLS attendance (Years 7-11) was 96.2% (up 2.5%), BOYS attendance (Years 7-11) was 95.7% (up 1.9%). Since the start of September Year 7-11 girls attendance is 96.1% and boys attendance is 96.2%. The gap between girls and boys is 0.1%.

CHANGES TO ATTENDANCE POLICY From September 2015 the College changed the definition of “persistent absence” we use to include those students who are under 90% attendance. This is in line with national guidelines and increased the threshold from 85% at present.

MEDICAL ABSENCE FROM COLLEGE Whilst the College requires parents to contact us on each day of absence, school policy now requires that any student who accumulates 7 or more days of absence during the course of the academic year will be asked to provide medical confirmation of the need to be absent before any further absences are authorised for medical reasons. This is a necessary measure as we closely monitor absence due to illness / medical reasons in order that we can ensure students are supported where needed.

For your information medical confirmation does not have to be a doctor's note but can also take the form of a medical appointment card, a copy of a relevant dated prescription or evidence of medication being taken.

If no medical evidence is provided then the absence will be coded as unauthorised. Ten or more unauthorised absences may result in you receiving a Fixed Penalty Notice. This incurs a penalty of £60 per parent / carer to be paid within 21 days, otherwise the penalty will rise to £120 per parent / carer to be paid within 28 days. If the penalty remains unpaid then the matter will proceed to the Magistrates Court where you will receive a criminal record if you are found guilty.

The link between attendance and achievement is well researched and documented and students should be aiming for an attendance rate of no less than 97% over the year. Thank you for your continued support with this importance issue.

MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS DURING THE COLLEGE DAY Students must sign out at the Attendance Office before leaving College to attend a medical appointment. When they return to College the student must sign back in. This ensures registers will be accurate and we know the student is off site should we have a fire alarm. The Attendance Office is located in an office along the RE corridor. We thank parents for making medical appointments, where possible, that do not take up a whole day of schooling. This often allows a student to have their legal registration mark for both morning and afternoon sessions and so their overall attendance does not fall.

Holiday absence from College - please see our website for an update on holidays regarding the High Court ruling earlier this year.

Holidays have not been authorised since 1st September 2013 under legislation on all English schools. Requests for holidays must still be made in writing to the appropriate Key Stage leader (Mrs Garvey KS5, Mrs Marshall or Mr Blades KS4/KS3), but in the vast majority of cases they will be unauthorised. CAREERS ADVICE FOR STUDENTS If any parent would like their son or daughter to have a careers interview with Mrs Pilling, our Careers Advisor, this year then please notify the relevant Year Learning Leader who can ensure names are added to the list. Mrs Pilling will prioritise Year 10-13, but students in Years 7-9 are welcome to attend her Thursday lunch time drop in. She uses the Student Support Office based next door to Music.

BEING PUNCTUAL AT ALL HALLOWS Most students appreciate the importance of being in College on time. Children who are regularly late do miss out on their education and form bad habits that will not be tolerated in the workplace.

We need to inform parents that students must be in the registration form class for the register to be taken at 8.45a.m. This means students should arrive 5-10 minutes earlier in College to be on time.

Any student who arrives after 8.45a.m. will receive a L code. Two L codes within a week will result in a whole college detention to be held each Thursday.

Any student who arrives after 9.05a.m. will receive a U code. This means they will be classed as absent for the whole morning and this may have consequences for overall attendance.

We are aware that College buses are sometimes late and we can confirm these students are not negatively marked in the register when this happens.

Gates are manned by members of staff and names will be taken of those students who are late.

MACCLESFIELD AND DISTRICT COUNTRY COMPETITION There was the Macclesfield and District cross country competition last Wednesday in which we had teams from Years 7,8,9,10 and 11 entered.

All students gave 100% on a tough course which was very muddy underfoot with a few lost shoes on the way, therefore for all of them to complete the course was a great achievement.

The following students represented All Hallows from the different year groups in which a high proportion received letters on the day to go to the next stage of the competition. This will be as an individual over in Warrington in which we wish them the best of luck.

All our Year7 students will soon be receiving their Bookbuzz choices. We subscribe to the scheme to promote a love of reading amongst our students and it is part of our 'Reading Matters' philosophy at AHCC. ACCELERATED READER A reminder for parents of Year 7 & 8 students.

Our KS3 students all use the Accelerated Reader Programme which involves the completion of a reading test to establish a reading level so that students can read appropriate books. After reading the books students can complete a quiz on the book to assess their knowledge and comprehension of the story. Students collect rewards for quizzing and the number of books they read, as well as progress made.

If students read their own books or borrow them from a public library, they can check the level of the book and if it has a quiz attached by entering the details on http://www.arbookfind.co.uk/UserType.aspx If you have any questions about the reading programme, please feel free to contact the Librarian, Ms Sinclair or your child's English teacher.
