HuGE suPPORt FOR tHE CliPPER tEAMs FROM PAGE 1: The Clipper Race comprises 12 teams of amateur crew aboard identical 70ft ocean racing yachts, each led by a professional skipper. The start for the teams came after many months of training and weeks of anticipation in the Race Village at St Katharine Docks in London.

LMAX Exchange, led by the first ever French Skipper Olivier Cardin, was the first yacht over the start line. The boat was quickly followed by GREAT Britain and Da Nang – Viet Nam on this first race, a 5,186nm journey to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Race Director Justin Taylor said: “It was a good clean downwind start with LMAX Exchange and GREAT Britain well practiced when launching their spinnakers very quickly.”

The Race Start followed a spectacular Parade of Sail by the fleet of ocean racers down the River Thames. The send-off was phenomenal, with crew past, present and future, plus tens of thousands of race supporters lining the banks of the River Thames – and not forgetting everyone in the spectator boats on the water. of Sail with GREAT Britain leading the way out of its home port of London.

Amid all the celebrations and party atmosphere there was a poignant moment during the Blessing of the Fleet when the Sailors’ Society Chaplain read from a bible that Visit Seattle will be taking round the world.

This bible was a gift from Sir Robin to Skipper Huw Fernie’s grandfather before his own circumnavigation many years ago.

Now Huw and Visit Seattle have the bible on board for its second round the world voyage, as a tribute to his grandfather.

Sir Robin said: “Watching the crews start their adventure is a very special moment after all the months and, in many cases, years of training and preparation they have undertaken to get to this stage.

The challenges that lie ahead are going to test them to their limits physically and mentally, and they are going to need to work as a team to overcome everything Mother Nature will throw at them.”

It is the start of a 40,000 nautical mile global race, the toughest ocean endurance challenge, between six continents, which

will take almost a year to complete.

Following the first stopover in Brazil, the fleet will continue on via Cape Town, Albany – Western Australia, Sydney, the Whitsundays, Da Nang – Vietnam, Qingdao – China, Seattle, Panama, New York, Derry-Londonderry and Den Helder – the Netherlands, before returning to St Katharine Docks for the Race Finish on 30 July 2016.

Sadly, just days into the race, tragedy struck when 49-year-old Andrew Ashman died after being knocked unconscious by the mainsheet. He was given immediate medical assistance and attempted resuscitation but failed to regain consciousness. This was the first fatality in the history of the race but is a reminder of the dangers these sailors face. Mr. Ashman was an experienced sailor who had enjoyed sailing since joining the London Sailing project aged 16.

With boat manufacturing accounting for 29.3 per cent of the £2.93bn received by the UK marine industry in total revenue in 2014, there is no denying that these figures are encouraging signs for the industry.

A recruitment firm has reported that the Royal Navy is struggling to attract young people as they are no longer willing to tolerate the isolation of underwater life. Nick Chaffey, head of defence consulting, told The Sunday Telegraph: “The fact that you are disconnected from the world wide web and Twitter is actually a significant barrier to recruiting young people.”

GILES Scott clinched a final day Finn class victory at the Olympic Test Event in Rio while the 470 duo Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark settled for silver after a medal race mistake saw their regatta lead slip away.

World Champion Scott continued his two year winning streak by overhauling the Netherlands’ Pieter-Jan Postma on the final day of racing at the Aquece Rio International Regatta after a testing start to his week-long regatta which included a race disqualification.

Mills and Saskia Clark didn’t have the golden end to their regatta that they had hoped for. Going into the final medal race assured of a medal but intent on keeping their yellow jerseys come the end of it, the duo were forced to take penalty turns after infringing another boat at the start and were left fighting back from the outset.

The British Sailing Team ended the Olympic test event fourth in the medal table with 19 nations – almost twice as many as at the 2014 Test Event – sharing the 30 medals available across the 10 events.

RYA Olympic Manager Stephen Park admits that his team didn’t have the regatta they would have hoped for.

“I think it has been a difficult week and today was no different. We came into the day thinking that maybe even three gold medals might have been possible, two golds and a silver likely, two golds probably. We have come away with one gold and one silver, so whichever way we look at it we can not hide from the fact that that is pretty disappointing.” www.britishsailingteam.com @BritishSailing

WITH autumn approaching and the children back at school our thoughts are turning to the biggest boat show of the year - Southampton Boat Show.

I was trying to recall when I first attended this show and think it must be almost 15 years ago.

Although there are more attractions these days the boats themselves remain the stars of the show.

It is such a fantastic opportunity to look at boats of all sizes (and budgets) and stock up on kit. Our special preview guide has all the information you need including the show launches. See you in the Guinness Bar perhaps…

It might have been the wettest August since records began in 1912 but hopefully it did not put a dampener on your summer. Yes, the last day of the America’s Cup World Series Portsmouth was cancelled, yes there was a wet start to the Clipper Race and yes we were packing away our tent in the rain on Bank Holiday Monday, but fortunately I have a positive outlook.

Land Rover BAR continued their success in the next round in Gothenburg and are currently second in the overall America’s Cup World Series standings. The start of the Clipper Race drew huge crowds and the GREAT Britain team have got off to a fantastic start. However I might have to dig a bit harder in finding the positive in camping in the wet though.

Thank you for all your letters and pictures. Many of you have noticed there has been an absence of photo of the month, but it is back.

Keep sending in your photos as we love seeing them and they will be uploaded to the All at Sea website’s Readers’ Gallery even if they do not immediately make it into the paper.

IN total 74 sailors, including All at Sea’s columnist Lizzy Foreman , will be setting off on 19 September from the Bay of Douarnenez in France for the first leg of the Mini Transat îles de Guadeloupe.

Ready for the adventure, the competitors do not necessarily know what surprises will be in store for them on this one of a kind race. Here are a couple of interesting Mini Transat tales…

In 1983 Roland Jourdain sank off La Corunna. Picked by a Spanish trawler, he was handed over to the Guardia Civil in the Spanish harbour. The Spanish authorities confused the name of his

boat with that of a sailing boat travelling back from the Caribbean suspected of drug running.

It is also rumoured that, on one edition of the race in the 1980s or 1090s, on a day of dead calm, a competitor tied up to a accompanying security boat for drinks and canapés.

YOUR LETTERS Dear All at Sea I have recently acquired an old boat that is not suitable for sailing due to wear and tear. However it is very beautiful. It has hinges and is a foldable boat and also a plaque on it saying Fairey Marines Hamble Southampton. I have Googled this boat and it says they were lifeboats made in the 1950s. I just wonder if you might be able to ask your readers for any more information for me?

Hamble, I idly turned the pages of your newspaper to see Boleh in all her glory (August 2015).

I squealed with delight, much to the amusement of the German visitors on the next table.

I knew Roger and Gail Angel, father and daughter very well. In fact they bought me my first sailing bag and a little crystal boat. Roger asked me to sail in Majorca with him on Boleh; goodness I wish I had.

He returned to UK to care for Gail, and we became great friends sharing our love of live music and dancing.

Roger was always the one on the dancefloor first, definitely a free soul.

One Christmas Roger gave me the book Boleh and he wrote a lovely message in it.

Reading your article gave me quite a pang, for the loss of two angels. His grandchildren Lewis, Simone, Jordan and Naiomi, lost both their mum and grandad in a very short time.

I would dearly love to give the book to the owners of Boleh and I would also love to visit her.

Roger and Gail would be proud to know that since they bought that bag for me I have passed my Yacht Master Coastal Skipper theory, VHF course and ICC. I just wish I could have sailed with them.

the success of the inaugural Poole Harbour Boat Show in May has led organisers, Poole Harbour Commissioners, to confirm dates for 2016 and 2017. there will also be a third day added to the weekend’s schedule of activities. to coincide with the dates of the 2017 european Maritime Day, which includes a conference at the lighthouse, the Poole Harbour Boat Show will be held on 20 - 22 May, 2016 and 19 - 21 May 19 to 21, 2017.

PANERAI CHAMPION

After five days of racing at Panerai British Classic Week 2015 the weather sadly let the fleet down on the final day, when strong winds and torrential rain forced the abandonment of the final race of the series. With straight wins in both Class 4 and the combined Fleet races, the 1897 William Fife III designed Cork Harbour One Design ‘Jap’, the oldest boat in the regatta, was named Panerai British Classic Week Champion 2015 for the second time.

QE2’S FUTURE

A new working group has been established to examine if the world famous Qe2 cruise ship could be brought back to the Clyde and Greenock. Inverclyde Council leader, Councillor Stephen McCabe, said: “With reports that Qe2 was languishing in a dock in Dubai after plans to convert her into a luxury hotel fell apart, I wrote to the Government and national representatives calling for national support to bring her home. I am delighted that the Scottish Government has recognised that Qe2 is an important part of Scottish and Greenock’s maritime history. this support is a chance for all of the various Government agencies to work together to find out if there is a strong business case to bringing Qe2 to Greenock and the Clyde.”

French victorious in Fastnet Géry Trentesaux’s JPK 10.80 Courrier du Leon from France was confirmed as the overall winner of this year’s 603 nautical mile rolex Fastnet race ahead of the record 356-strong international fleet.

It was the Frenchman’s thirteenth race with his first attempt back in 1977. This year’s win was all the more remarkable considering the boat was over early at the windless start and took 40 minutes to restart.

Trentesaux said: “It was stupid - we were on the other side of the line eight minutes before the start and we saw the wind was better off the island so we put the motor on but we did not see how fast the tide was going. We were 100m on the right side of the line, but could not slow down. I was furious, but I did not show it…!”

Trentesaux’s team received the Fastnet Challenge Trophy at the prizegiving, an event that doubled as the 90th anniversary celebrations of the rOrC’s flagship offshore race.

Courrier du Leon is the sixth French yacht to win the rolex Fastnet (following Pen Duick III in 1967, Mordicus in 1981, Whirlpool-Europe 2 in 1999, Iromiguy in 2005 and Night and Day in 2013) and continues a recent trend of French dominance at the race.

Monohull line honours was claimed

by American Jim Clark’s 100ft Maxi Comanche, arriving in Plymouth in an elapsed time of 2 days, 15 hours, 42 minutes and 26 seconds.

Multihull line honours was claimed

by Dona Bertarelli and yann Guichard’s 131ft trimaran Spindrift 2.

British comedian Griff rhys Jones was racing a classic S&S yawl.

Griff said: “We had a really great time in the Solent - it was fun to be among so many boats. On the whole, it was great - we were threatened with a windless race and there were great lulls, but it was not as windless as I had feared. In fact, I had feared that we would be so completely out-manoeuvred as we are a heavy boat and she just does not like it when we have not got the resources. We probably should have spent more time just watching what Dorade was doing and then copying exactly what she did!”

Thanks to the ultra-light forecast, prestart expectations had the rolex Fastnet race tailenders arriving sometime in week 2. In the end, on the morning of day 7 just 5 boats remained at sea.

Fighting hard For second

ThE renovated Boathouse No.4 in Portsmouth dockyard will serve as a tribute to the crews of vessels dubbed ‘the Spitfires of the sea’ – and train new generations of shipwrights.

Boat building will return to the ground floor of the huge ship hall, where royal Navy landing craft, launches and fast boats were once either constructed or maintained.

On a new mezzanine floor there will be a free, interactive exhibition detailing the deeds of small boats from the days of Nelson to World War 2, as well as a waterfront bistro/restaurant.

The boathouse is one of the few surviving examples of 1930s military architecture in the UK. The project bringing it back into use is being overseen by Peter Goodship and colleagues at Portsmouth historic Dockyard Trust.

ThE second and final day of racing at the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series in Gothenburg produced some of the toughest conditions in the series so far, with a light and shifty wind.

There was concern that there would not be enough breeze, but two races were completed and Land rover BAr worked hard to come back from a couple of difficult starts. The team recovered to third in race 3, but had to settle for a frustrating fifth in race 4.

The results placed them third overall at Gothenburg, just behind Emirates Team New Zealand and Oracle Team USA, and second overall in the series (behind Emirates Team New Zealand).

It is all to play for going into the final event of the year in Bermuda, 16 - 18 October.

Skipper and Team Principal Ben Ainslie: “When we were at the back of the fleet the guys really dug deep. I was pleased with how we kept pushing hard, trying to get every place back. We were very close to getting Oracle Team USA right at the finish, which would have got us second place overall in Gothenburg. And although we were not at the right end of the fleet today,

overall we are on the podium and I was pleased with how the team dealt with the difficult conditions and we will move forwards from here.”

During July’s Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series Portsmouth saw spectator attendance close to 250,000 during the four day event. Now the dates for next year’s event have been announced.

Speaking about the World Series, Sir Keith Mills said: On behalf of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series, Portsmouth, we would like to thank all the spectators that came from around the world to be part of this iconic sailing event.

Despite the weather, the event delivered and the Saturday was a particular highlight, with over 60,000 people visiting the on-land spectator arena and over 22,000 watching the action from the water. The America’s Cup teams delivered spectacular racing on the water and with home team Land rover BAr winning the event making it extra special” Sir Keith added: “We are now straight into planning mode for next year’s event, scheduled to be held between 21 and 24 July 2016, and there is little doubt that this event is now a must-attend event on the British sporting calendar.”

SCOOT TO COWES

In good news for locals and visitors, there is a new foot passenger ferry service for the Isle of Wight. Scoot will be operating ferries from early in the day to late at night every day of the year. the Yarmouth to lymington route will come into operation on 1 September, connecting West Wight to the mainland with a 25 minute crossing time. this will be followed by a Cowes to Portsmouth (Gunwharf Quays) service from 2017. https://scootferries.co.uk/

RESCUED TREASURE

An incredibly rare and extremely well-preserved 350 year old wooden gun carriage has been raised from the seabed by Historic england. It comes from one of england’s most important 17th century shipwrecks the london – which lies in two parts off Southend Pier in essex. Raising the gun carriage and bringing it ashore was a pivotal moment in a two-year diving programme to discover and retrieve the warship’s artefacts before they disintegrate and are lost in the thames estuary.

Entry numbers for this year’s Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week were up from 2014 with a number of large yachts in Cowes for the royal yacht Squadron’s Bicentennial regatta and the rolex Fastnet race.

Unlike the high winds that led to the cancellation of racing at the previous month’s America’s Cup World Series, the regatta began with unbroken sunshine and a fickle breeze that saw racing postponed for two hours. However shortly after midday, once the east-south-easterly breeze in the mid-Solent had built to 8-9 knots, race officials got the start sequences under way.

In contrast to the delays on day 1 the second day delivered perfect conditions with bright sun and decent winds.

With 30-degree wind shifts at times, accompanied by big gusts and lulls, there was plenty to challenge competitors. the first start was for Sigma 33s, which used the first 5 days of the regatta as its national championship, including a 30mile coastal race that took the 14-strong fleet on a 30-mile course out of the Solent and around the Shingles Bank.

Day 3 of Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week was UKSA day, in which attention was focused on the regatta’s official charity, which uses sailing and watersports as a catalyst to transform young people’s lives. Fund-raising activities during the week included gutter boat racing and the famed Boss up the Mast spectacle. the following day, with no wind predicted for the Solent area, all classes was abandoned.

“It was really unfortunate to lose a day’s racing,” said race director Stuart Quarrie, “but with no wind there was no other option. We waited until 1100 to see

if any zephyrs from the north-east might build into a sailable breeze, but they didn’t materialise.”

However it was also Liz Earle Ladies Day, which champions the role of women in sailing and celebrates the 150 per cent rise in the number of female competitors at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week over the past decade. nominees for the Ladies Day trophy included Libby Greenhalgh, who was navigator on the all-women team SCA in the last Volvo Ocean race, and All at Sea’s columnist Lizzy Foreman, who was due to race as skipper on one of UKSA’s Farr 65s that day.

Other nominees included team SCA sailors Annie Lush and Sam Davies, XOD sailor Gemma Osgood, redwing sailor Jessica Speare-Cole, First 40.7 owner rachel Mcnamara and record-breaking kite surfer Steph Bridge. the presentation of the Ladies Day trophy to the winner, Libby Greenhalgh, took place at an evening reception held at northwood House.

Libby said: “I am really proud to have received this award, following my good friend Dee Caffari last year and a long line of inspirational women who have won this trophy. It has been a fantastic evening

and I would to thank everyone involved in making this happen, including Liz Earle, Cowes Week Limited and Aberdeen Asset Management. “the Liz Earle Ladies Day at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week really helps in providing a fantastic platform for celebrating women in sailing, and by doing so, helps promote a sport which we all love,” said Libby. the following day was a beautifully warm day with a stable east-northeasterly air flow over the Solent area that mostly averaged 9-11 knots, with a few stronger gusts, making for excellent racing conditions.

It was also youth Day at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week, where the focus switched to the many crews, skippers and sailors aged under 25. this year there were 37 crews, all of whom were under 25, competing for the Aberdeen Asset Management Under 25 trophy.

By the end of day five Hugo Sloper’s Swallow Marengo was provisionally the leading boat in contention for the trophy, a large margin ahead of Ben Palmer’s Etchells Ziggy Legend. Sloper eventually took second in class (Swallow), which also earned him and his young crew the Aberdeen Asset Management Under 25 trophy. thursday saw the return of the Artemis Challenge with 16 yachts, including 10 IMOCA 60s, two Volvo 65s and three MOD70 trimarans. the race, which awards £10,000 towards the winner’s charity of choice, is an annual 50 mile race beginning and ending in Cowes, which brings together some of the biggest names in sailing from across Britain and Europe, many of whom are accompanied on-board by famous faces. this year the likes of Zara Philips, Mike tindall and Gavin Hastings took part. thunder and lightning sweeping across the Solent made for a dramatic start, with visibility closing down to a few 100 metres. the fleet started setting their giant downwind sails one minute before the start, with the multihulls opting for Code 0s, while the monohulls chose asymmetric spinnakers. the all women

crew on the Volvo 65 team SCA was closest to the line at the gun and moving faster than the rest of the monohulls, although Alex thompson’s IMOCA 60 Hugo Boss was in hot pursuit.

A little before 13:30 the first of the giant trimarans could be seen powering up the eastern Solent on the way to finishing their race around the island. Musandam – Oman Sail was first across the line, completing the race in a fraction over three and a half hours. they received £2,000 for their charity of choice, the Al Hayat Association. In the competitive fleet of ten IMOCA monohulls, it was PrB, skippered by decorated French sailor Vincent riou, who beat the world class line-up of offshore racers to claim £7,000 for the charity Action Enfance Fondation MVE. In the battle of the two Volvo Ocean 65s, the all female team SCA with Gavin Hastings onboard beat Dongfeng to claim £1,000 for Women in Sport. the penultimate day of Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week delivered more interesting and challenging racing, with most of the action taking place in a light north westerly wind. the day’s races for Black Group yachts were the last in their series for the overall prizes in the regatta while a number of classes had clear winners with a day to spare. the final day of Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week saw a return to champagne sailing conditions, with bright sun and a light north westerly breeze that swung into a south westerly sea breeze during the afternoon. the overall regatta winners were also announced – Malcolm Hutchings and Andy ramsey’s Squib Lady Penelope in White Group and Adam Gosling’s Corby 36 yes! in Black Group. Gosling also won the Aberdeen Asset Management Overall trophy for the best performance at the regatta. The ship was given to Australia as a bicentennial gift in 1988. Since then the Young Endeavour has been in service as part of a youth scheme that has taken more than 11,000 young Australians on sailing adventures.

IN the past few weeks, three serious incidents linked to the use of petrol have seen nine people needing hospital treatment, two other people injured and eight boats damaged or destroyed.

The Boat Safety Scheme is working with navigation and harbour authorities to help boaters, and especially anyone new to boating, to appreciate the nature of petrol vapour especially in the context of the bucket-like quality of a boat cabin and hull.

Petrol, when spilt or exposed to open air, can quickly vaporise into a low-lying, extremely flammable gas-cloud that can flow into the boat’s interior and pool in the lower parts where any spark could ignite it.

Ocean Youth trust South has agreed to the purchase of Prolific, which was built in 2005 as a tribute to the herring-fishing vessels in operation along the Norwegian coast during the 19th century. the ship is a hybrid of historic design and modern-day construction. Most recently she has been used for sail training with young people in Norway. Ocean Youth trust South will be seeking a buyer for their current vessel, John laing, after the 2015 sailing season ends in November.

Marinanow has been looking at the effects of the delicate political situation in Greece on the local tourism market and in particular nautical tourism. Using their partners, both charters and marinas, that operate in Greece they found that with respect to 2014, the number of bookings is stable or up from the previous year - in some cases there is even overbooking. Bart’s Bash measure the distance you have sailed and enter your details online; remember to tick the ‘Sail for Bart’ box when you enter.

Many clubs will use their normal Sunday racing as their Bart’s Bash race.

They want host venues to make it their event and to incorporate it into their schedule in a way that makes it simple for them. It is the club’s event.

To encourage people to share their stories Bart’s Bash is encouraging people to send photos and videos via the website, and there will be spot prizes for the best video.

It doesn’t cost anything to take part, but if people wish they can use the event to make a donation or to fundraise for the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation, the charity that was set up in memory of Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson. The charity already has lots of great projects underway as a result of incredible £360,000 raised from last year’s Bart’s Bash.

The first bash in 2014 saw more than 30,000 sailors take to the water at over 550 locations around the world and raise £366,391.95 for the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation to remember the tragic sailor who died in the last America’s Cup in San Francisco.

Last year the event set a Guinness World Record for being the largest sailing race in 24 hours. The aim is to make the event even bigger with a view to one day being the largest sporting event in the world.

Bart’s Buddies is the big idea behind this year’s event. It is all about getting your friends on the water. We have all promised to take friends, family and colleagues sailing in the past – and now is the chance to do exactly that.

To help with that this year, there is no minimum 25 boat requirement – you just need two boats to turn up.

They are also encouraging host venues to take part in the Bart’s Buoy race – this is a really simple concept whereby you just have to sail from the shore to a buoy and back. It is perfect for people who cannot take part in the main race – like race officers, catering staff or volunteers.

Also this year, you can ‘Sail for Bart’ outside of a racing venue. So whether you are sailing at training centre are just out for a day of cruising or even on a delivery trip, your sail still counts. You just need to

SAILING TEAM ON THE ROAD TO RIO

What a difference a year makes In this month’s British Sailing Team column, Nacra 17 sailor Hannah Diamond talks about her 2015 Test Event experience in Rio. IF I think back to where both John Gimson and I were individually last year and where we are now as a team, a lot has changed. Where I thought I would be one year out from the Games is completely different to where I am now, but I would not swap it for anything in the world.

When our names were announced as members of the British Sailing Team for the 2015 Test Event at the ISAF Sailing World Cup in Weymouth and Portland I remember being so excited.

Obviously it is not the Olympic Games yet, but it is a step on the way and it is exactly where we hoped to be at this point.

EXPERIENCE We talk a lot about experience but John and I can only be as experienced as we are and just make the most of the skills and strengths that we have got.

The British Sailing Team has so much depth, there are many people you can have conversations with and we have the opportunity to learn from the very best and use those experiences alongside our own strengths and skills.

I was the youngest member of the Test Event Team, so I was learning so much from everyone else’s experiences of the Olympics. It is great to bounce ideas off people that have been in my position before.

Hopefully I have something to offer to other people in the team as well, although it might be something a bit different!

ONE YEAR TO GO While a year does not seem very long, at the same time you have to remember a year is 25 per cent of the lifecycle of the Nacra 17.

John and I have also been sailing together for just under a year and we have come so far in that short amount of time. If we can continue at the rate we have been working at, we have it in us to be right at the front in a year’s time. We have a solid plan of what we aim to do and how we are going to achieve it, including heading back out to Rio in September.

For us, it is quite inspiring to know what can be done in such a short amount of time, however there is much more learning still to go so we can come back next year and be really strong.

TEST EVENT It was the first Test Event for the Nacra 17 class so for many of us there were a lot of unknowns. It was good for us to remember that only a couple of weeks ago, at our World Championships, we had 10 nations in the top 10 so it was not really a surprise that the racing was going to be tough.

You get really punished for your small mistakes in Rio, the points gaps were quite small and it is important to make sure you are not wasting a single point.

We were pretty gutted to miss out on the medal race by one point, but we have taken a lot away from that experience that hopefully we can build towards next year.

We have done a lot of racing this year and we have a good training block at the beginning of the winter to make sure we can iron out some of those smaller details.

For John and me, we just want to keep doing what we are doing and work as a team in terms of boat handling and boat speed.

We need to keep pushing as no one else is going to sit back and give us an inch!

SUMMER HOLIDAYS Greek Beach cluB holiday

clubbing in greece Chris Satchwell combined his Greek Beach Club holiday with the opportunity for plenty of dinghy sailing and also gave water-skiing a shot, some 41 years after his last experience.

It was pure coincidence that a brochure for Neilson Beach Clubs dropped into my inbox when we were thinking about our usual June flotilla or bareboat week.

Neilson have a large choice of clubs but driven by our favoured destination of Greece, departure day and time and tempted by a BA flight from Heathrow we decided on Porto Marina Palace. the club is on Lemnos and only a short transfer and a pleasant walk away from the island’s capital.

We had been to clubs previously but with our family during school holidays,

so going on our own was going to be different. How would we fare?

Dinghy sailing the answer - fantastic, particularly for me from a dinghy sailing point of view and for my wife yoga, pilates and swimming. Not having 16-year-olds with sailing skills on holiday in June to spoil my regatta placing looked good to me. Competing with a large number of good club dinghy sailors across all age groups meant the best I could achieve was a second place and then only once,

but I learned to live with that. I spent most of my days sailing a Laser 1, proving that I could still cope with capsize drill, occasionally with the help of the safety boat that was always on hand to deal with injured pride.

Winds were mostly light. Regattas and daily races were put on for all levels often including young children who sailed with their club nannies. A number of new sailors had learned enough to join in the regattas too. activity choices there were many different water-based and shore-based activities to try from water-skiing and stand-up paddle boarding to cycling and exercise classes. the last time I tried water-skiing was on Guam in the Pacific in 1974. So early one morning off we went to the tow boat and the expert instructor. My wife came along as support with the ever-present photographer. Drop over the back, put on the skis and get hold of the bar I was told. I achieved it without too much difficulty. What was all the

shouting about? I did notice my wife and the lady photographer rolling about the boat laughing, I cannot think why.

It was a great experience and something I shall try to repeat in the next few months, but certainly not in the UK. Facilities For all the massive swimming pool looked to be Olympic size with plenty of room to try scuba diving, take swimming lessons or join in aqua aerobics.

Several extended families were on holiday when we were there. the children mostly went to the inclusive

clubs to be entertained. Our room overlooking the sea had a flat screen tV with a multitude of programmes in English as well as News 24, which I was allowed to watch once a day. the patio sported a hammock, table and a couple of chairs.

Evening routine was drinks at the pool bar then dinner. the food was of a very high standard with plenty of choice.

Small children can either have high tea or join their parents. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and bar service was always good - great cocktails or even a cup of tea. www.neilson.co.uk

COOKING AFLOAT ALL-WEATHER BOAT CUISINE

Gazpacho A fantastic light starter, lovely on a summer evening.

SERVES 4

Preparation & cooking time: 30 minutes

Ingredients ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

2 slices bread 450g tomatoes 1/2 cucumber 1 large green pepper 1 small onion 1 tbsp pimiento (optional) 1 squeeze garlic (or one clove) 3 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp vinegar 285ml water seasoning to taste

Method

■ Crumble bread and soak in some water ‘til pasty, squeezing it to help it along, then drain well.

■ Finely chop the tomatoes, cucumber, pepper, onion and pimiento.

■ Add olive oil, vinegar and water.

■ Mix well and add crushed garlic.

■ Add bread, stirring to mix again.

Season well to taste.

Serve cold with little dishes of extra tomato, cucumber, onion and pepper, all finely chopped, and some extra diced bread for sprinkling on top.

TELL US MORE ABOUT THE LATEST SAILBOAT, THE RS QUEST.

WHEN WAS RS SAILING LAUNCHED AND WHY?

We launched RS Sailing in 1994 after realizing that there was an opportunity to use a new generation of design and technology to bring fast and exciting sailboats within reach of most sailors, with user friendly handling and affordability. Asymmetric spinnakers and light weight construction were largely restricted to International 14s, 18ft skiffs and other more extreme boats back then.

WHAT BOATS CAN BE FOUND IN THE RANGE?

The RS range now incorporates a wide range of sailboats for both racing and for recreational/training use, including Sailability. Our smallest boat is a junior single-hander and our largest a 24ft, three-person keelboat.

It will be launched at the Southampton Boat Show (stand E045) and is a spacious and very stable dinghy in a compact 14ft size. For one to four sailors it is perfect for sailing schools or as a family boat. It will be made in rotomoulded polyethylene, so will be super-strong with virtually no maintenance needed and a great value way to get involved in sailing.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT SAILING?

Our aim has always been to create boats that will inspire a new generation of sailors and boats that make the game as good as it possibly can be for current sailors. We are all passionate about sailing and about RS’s place in it, so we work closely with key organisations at all levels. We are sponsors of ISAF’s Connect to Sailing programme, we work with many National Sailing Authorities around the world on participation and pathway initiatives and in the UK we are closely involved with the RYA and their many training centres. We have always

worked with the RS Class Associations to ensure that events are sociable and fun for everyone. The Associations are key to the whole RS scene.

The variety and the people. I love to compete – the pressure and excitement on the water followed by the camaraderie ashore. And I love to go cruising with my wife Amanda (we met sailing RS200s) and friends. Sailing seems to make the world smaller and friendlier. Everywhere we go we meet people we know and make new friends. We went on to the Bay of Islands (12,000 miles from the UK) and raced in RS Aeros against a guy who lives 2.5 miles from my home and is a mate of some of our best friends.

WHICH SAILORS INSPIRE YOU?

I will never forget listening to the radio as Australia II took the America’s Cup from the Americans in 1983, for the first time in its history. When I found myself sitting next to Skip Lissiman, one of the Australia II crew, in a restaurant at an event a couple of years ago I found myself feeling like a star struck teenager. Clearly that whole story had a big effect on me as a young and keen racing sailor.

SO WHAT SHOULD YOU BE LOOKING FOR? What causes flooding?

Preventing flooding

When it comes to ‘slow burner’ issues, regularly check your hull and fittings to make sure everything is a) there, b) works, this is key, and c) you have a softwood bung of the correct size attached to each skin fitting ready to use. If you spot something looking worn replace it early to stop it becoming a bigger problem.

Regular checks also mean you become increasingly familiar with what looks ‘right’ so will be able to spot smaller defects earlier.

Inspect the hull and internal structure for early signs of possible keel detachment. Check for leaks around the

toilet, keel bolts, pipes fitted to a skin fitting and skin fittings themselves.

To prevent skin fitting seizure open and close at least monthly and get the skin fitting serviced annually. Check and service the bilge pumps too.

In terms of ‘impact’ damage, not getting into that situation in the first place is the best prevention through good navigation and thorough passage planning. Know not just what is around you but underneath you. Weather forecasting is crucial too.

If you do run aground, even if it is a soft grounding, don’t laugh it off. Get your boat inspected thoroughly by a reliable surveyor.

Things like breakdown of the bond can be difficult to detect, even to the most trained eye, but they will be able to advise on possible structural weaknesses and ‘better to be safe than sorry’ action.

Of course accidents do still happen so being able to send an alert and abandon to a liferaft is essential, and ensure all on board know how to use safety equipment.

Taking water on board can come from a slow-burning, undetected leak or a significant one-off impact.

Getting grounded on Ryde Sands during the Round the Island Race, for example, may be a funny story for the bar afterwards but did you give serious thought to the damage your hull or keel might have sustained?

Repeat groundings, or even a ‘light’ grounding, like on mud or sand, can still cause major yet undetected damage to a hull and/or keel. Bonding can break down resulting in a weakening of the overall structure, which could cause a keel to become loose or even lead to a catastrophic keel detachment later on.

Likewise more ‘impact’ incidents, such as hitting an underground object or another vessel, or grounding on hard surfaces like rock and coral, risk puncturing the hull and water being taken on board.

Even leaving a hatch open at sea can result in water flooding down that hatch when waves break over the deck or in a following sea. Other factors including seized skin fittings due to infrequent operation, toilet pump failure, lack of servicing and general wear and tear can all create potential leak weak spots that could result in a much bigger issue if not dealt with early.

In the case of avoiding leaks and flooding, diligence and being aware of the things that could cause potential issues, immediate and in the future, could ultimately be a lifesaver.

There are many reasons a boat can be overwhelmed by water, creating a potentially hazardous, often unexpected, capsize or inversion. But the majority of these are preventable if you take a bit of well-spent time carrying out regular checks and ongoing maintenance.

Round turn and two half hitches - Probably the most used ‘general purpose’ knot in boating. It is one of the safest, secure and reliable knots you will ever use on the water. So how do you do it?

SOUTHAMPTON BOAT SHOW 2015

Now in its 47th year, the festival of boating will showcase the very best that the international marine industry has to offer. With so many fantastic attractions along with thousands of boats, brands and equipment to see and try first-hand, there will be something for everyone.

Things to do for free this year Make sure all these attractions are on your schedule for the day. The great news is that they are all free.

The Red Arrows will be performing their trademark combination of close formation flying and dynamic loops and rolls over the show on 12 September.

The Earl of Pembroke tall ship will take a break from featuring in blockbuster movies to allow visitors to climb aboard. The ship will be berthed along Solent Park.

At the Aquarium (stand A134) visitors can talk to the scientists and students from Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton. There will be film footage from a recent deep-sea expedition, tanks and rock pools filled with fascinating creatures from local waters and a dark-room filled with coral and anemones which will show how this beautiful marine life has a natural ability to emit fluorescent light.

On The Water invites 8 - 16 year olds to discover the excitement of dinghy sailing and Stand up Paddleboarding with Get Afloat, an attraction for younger visitors. Supported by the team at Rockley this activity lasts about an hour and is a great opportunity to have a go at sailing and stand up paddle boarding. It is first come, first served.

At the Adventure River Canoe Ride younger boaters can cruise along a winding river in a canoe. Head over to stand A133.

The Wooden Boatbuilders’ Trade Association will be displaying a wide variety of boats as well as having a demonstration area where they will be showing traditional and modern methods of construction. Visit stand A100.

Visitors to the show can experience the thrill of being out on the water with the popular Try-a-Boat feature, presented by On The Water. Whether you are a bold beginner or a sailing veteran, choose from a varied selection of the latest RIBs, powerboats and

DISCOUNTS TO LOCAL SAILING CLUB MEMBERS

As England exploded out of austerity and into the swinging sixties, the sailing scene was booming with it seeming that everyone wanted to get afloat.

One inevitable consequence of this ‘golden era’ boom was the rise of the sailing Championships venue.

As the sport grew, some locations understood the dynamics of Championships hosting better than others and started to realign their efforts towards providing the infrastructure needed to host a major event.

It was little wonder that the sailing clubs who could make the sailing week ‘happen’ the best would soon become part of an elite band of preferred venues. As a result, each year, events would rotate around from club to club, reappearing at the same venue every 4 or 5 years.

For the host clubs, the payoff for throwing open their doors was an almost guaranteed influx of funds into their coffers. However, hosting events depends heavily on the good nature of the club members, who would volunteer for all the days of hard work both afloat and ashore. However, we had been warned back in the sixties that increasingly people became maybe more money rich but certainly more time poor.

At the same time, events were becoming ever bigger and higher in profile, which would result in the rise of the super-venue, a location that was almost dedicated to the hosting of sailing events. The

best example of this would be found at the home for the 2012 Olympic Regatta, the Weymouth and Portland National sailing Academy.

WEYMOUTH’S NEW RIVAL

The Llyn Peninsular, in North Wales, has long been not only a popular sailing venue but also a highly prized spot for family seaside holidays. It also boasts two major sailing clubs that are almost within sight of each other, Abersoch and Pwllheli.

With snowdonia and so many other tourist hot spots on the doorstep, the Llyn also offers families a seaside week ashore that they will enjoy as much as the sailor does his time out afloat. Now, with backing from the Welsh Yachting Association and the Welsh Government, Pwllheli has been developed into a fantastic multi-function site that will undoubtedly challenge the supremacy of Weymouth.

For starters, the sailing waters out on Tremadog Bay are, without doubt, one of the best sailing areas to be found anywhere in UK waters.

Unlike the popular south Coast clubs, Pwllheli has negligible commercial traffic. The tidal range is also small, so the current streams don’t impact heavily on the racing.

Not only is the sailing first class, there can be few major sailing locations that enjoy such spectacular backdrops to the race course. The waters of Tremadog Bay are fringed with the wildlife

of Bardsley Island, the golden beaches of the Llyn Peninsular, then the glowering mountains of snowdonia, then the imposing fortress of Harlech. To the south, the skyline is dominated by Cader Idris. Moreover, the area is rich in wildlife, with porpoises a common sight and even turtles being seen whilst a look in the sky can show gannets, shearwaters and even puffins.

Ashore the new Plas Heli complex commands panoramic views of the sandy beach, with plenty of space provided for those who just want to sit in the sun and watch the action.

The building itself is of novel construction, resembling a large silver grey oil drum, but the modern and minimalistic design is actually very clever, as the circular floor space creates a natural meeting point.

In the end, the most crucial factor of any location hosting an event has to be the people and here Plas Heli scores highly. The new site is essentially Welsh, right down to the authenticity of the “bora da” welcome. The staff at Plas Heli really do extend a truly warm welcome to their visitors.

North Wales may be the land of rain as well as the land of song, but it really is now the land of great sailing opportunities.

Plas Heli in North Wales is an attractive alternative and with everything from the IRC classes to the single handed solos already scheduled for 2016, it seems certain that we will be writing about events there in the years to come.

Whether you want to sail single-handed or multi-person is an important decision

WHEN you are still new to the sport and maybe just completed your RYA Level 1 and 2 or have spent time on a friend’s yacht and tackled your RYA Competent Crew, how do you know what is the right type of sailing for you?

Single-handers, double-handers, dinghies, keelboats, multihulls, yachts (cruisers and racing), the opportunities are so varied that even if you are at the point you are considering buying your first boat, it could all be a bit overwhelming.

Thankfully there are heaps of ways to ensure you make the right decisions for you.

HERE ARE FIVE TOP TIPS TO MAKING THE BEST SAILING CHOICES. 1) KNOWLEDGE IS POWER If you want to start taking sailing seriously, you have probably done a course or two, maybe joined a club and have spent a bit of time with people whose passion is sailing. These folk are your best first source of advice. If you have done formal RYA training or learned informally with friends, ask your instructors or pals what they did when they started or what local clubs they would recommend. They will also have an idea of you as a person, your skill level and what you may enjoy and would suit you.

2) TAKE YOUR TIME Research and visit local clubs or centres and see what their popular boats are.

Some will be more specialist or lean towards certain ‘classes’. A ‘class’ is the name of a particular design of boat and can be defined as being more suitable for beginner, intermediate, expert and highperformance/professional sailors as well

Once you know the boat you want to sail you can start thinking about buying one

as there being junior and youth classes and boats more suitable for people with disabilities.

Some clubs have big fleets of different boat types, such as multihulls/single or double-handers or classes. You do not want to join a club whose most vibrant fleet is GP14 multi-person dinghies, for example, only to find you prefer sailing single-handed and your opportunities at the club are limited.

3) CLUBBING TOGETHER By joining a club you can see if you like the atmosphere and what kind of boats are popular, complete with a ready-made pool of advice from club members only too pleased to share their knowledge and experience. It is very common for members to happily let newcomers have a go at crewing for them, sometimes even in club races, so you can get a flavour of what certain boats are like.

RYA Club of the Year 2014, Staunton Harold SC in Derbyshire, has no fewer than

14 classes listed on its non-exhaustive ‘recommended’ list including double and single-handers and even windsurfers. As the club’s Training Principal, Liz Simons helps newly-qualified RYA Level 1 and 2 students choose their first dinghies.

She explains: “Choosing a class with a regular following is very important as you immediately join ‘the community’ of that class, you can get advice and support from existing class members. There is a range of second-hand boats, bits and sails if yours need replacing, and if you want to change your boat, you should find a good second-hand market.

“Students get a presentation of the dinghies typically sailed by members and are introduced to our fleet captains.

Sessions are arranged after completing their courses to try a range of dinghies and talk to regular sailors of these boats for their insight.”

4) TRY BEFORE YOU BUY There are commercial RYA Training Centres and clubs that run successful ‘pay-and-play’ schemes where, providing you have attained certain competency

and/or RYA course levels, you can sail their hire fleet boats either as a way to sample various classes before joining a club or to get to regularly sail different types of boat on a more casual basis, without the commitment of joining a club.

Introduced in 2002, up to 200 people can take advantage of Queen Mary SC’s ‘pay-and-play’ Select package for sailing and/or windsurfing each year.

There are two options; the full package, incorporating all boat hire and tuition including advanced RYA courses such as sailing with spinnakers, performance sailing, Start Racing and multihulls, or a ‘Select Hire’ version for people already at an approved level who just want to sail different boats. QMSC now has a widerange of some 60 single or double-handers to hire, while a new Youth Select (U16) option arrived this summer.

Vicki Thurston, Assistant Manager and Sailing Principal, Queen Mary SC, says: “Because many of our hire boats are classes raced at the club there are good routes into competitive racing as providing a Select member has achieved a certain level or done an RYA Start Racing course they can use boats to participate in club racing.

Our hire fleet is kept in good condition and we try to reflect the popular classes being raced at the club, so our newest addition is an RS400.

“We want Select members to learn so

we have Hire Assistants who help teach them rig the boat they are using outside of formal tuition, and because it is a 12-month membership we offer things like keelboat tuition and race training in the winter. Whenever the water is open there is safety cover and some people just like the hassle-free approach of prebooking a boat and going sailing with no commitment.”

5) TAKING THE PLUNGE Once you know the boat you want to sail your thoughts will inevitably turn to buying one. Clubs and centres often have Classifieds/For Sale noticeboards, a great way to buy as you can see the boat and chat to the person who has been sailing it.

The annual RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show and the Southampton and London Boat Shows are a perfect showcase to see all the latest boats and kit, and you can also speak to the class associations. There are plenty of websites and magazines with classifieds too, but be careful. Ask around for which are reputable.

The beauty of sailing is nothing is set in stone; you could start sailing yachts and end up racing state-of-the art Moth dinghies. Yet getting your first boat right is key in enjoying sailing and developing the passion to explore the opportunities it offers. EXPERTS’ FORUM ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY HULL CLEANING

LESS IS NEVER MORE IN THE HULL CLEANING GAME Most boat owners have a fetish about seeing their bottoms - they just can’t get enough of it! Richard Bayley, managing director of Sealift2 International, says take a regular look below the waterline.

ALl sailors know that if barnacles and weeds are allowed to take hold of a hull this can seriously damage the gel coat, which in turn dramatically increases the cost of servicing.

Couple this with the reducing effectiveness of antifoul paint as the

ecology lobby continuously forces the removal of copper and other growth inhibiting additives and the need for more frequent hull cleaning becomes apparent.

The problem is that the very high cost and time taken to haul a boat out on to hard standing means that most owners very rarely get to inspect the state of their boats below the waterline – once or twice a year at best – and this puts their hulls at risk.

Conversely, if a hull is regularly pressure washed – say three times between each annual antifoul service – the result is that when it comes time to antifoul, most of the previous antifoul coats will already have been removed. This dramatically speeds up the antifouling process as there is no buildup of layers of antifoul paint and so there is no need for heavy sanding and priming prior to applying fresh antifoul.

Of course the other benefits are that the boat sails much faster and for motor boats there can be a reduction in fuel

consumption of up to 20 per cent. The challenge is to find a service provider which can provide a package of services aimed at maintaining your boat in tip top condition throughout the year.

After struggling under sail and power against wind and tide a bottom clean gave us an extra 1.5 knots – more than 20 per cent extra boat speed.

That impressive result, especially after cleaning barnacles from the prop shaft and propeller, was thanks to the team at Sealift2 based at Haslar Marina at Gosport, minutes away from Portsmouth Harbour entrance.

Judging by our experience of jet wash, antifoulding and polish of the topsides, the boat, which is nearly

30 years old, looked better than I can remember.

Most important, thanks to the expert and friendly Sealift2 team, the whole operation took less than six hours. It seemed so much easier than the usual lift-out, scrub, transporting to hard standing, block off for antifouling.

And there was no need for a reverse procedure days later for re-launch. That can take days rather than hours.

Driving into the floating dry dock was simple. We motored into the padded stocks with no need for strops to lift us out with crew aboard. After securing fore and aft lines the boat and crew

went up in the world in minutes with the lift completed by buoyancy alone as the dry dock broke surface With the boat trapped in the stocks and secure on its keel a handy fixed ladder to climb down meant we could watch the team at work without the need for a block off or cradle. We left them to it to go for a coffee, a pint and lunch. The only downside might be the related expense of a trip on the Gosport ferry to the shops in Portsmouth’s Gunwarf Quays, which, depending on your crew, might prove more costly than the wash and brush up itself!

Relaunch also took only minutes as

the dock sank below the keel followed by a return to the nearby pontoon to complete topside polishing where the boat had been secured in the stocks.

The financial costs of the wash-off compared favourably with a traditional lift-out. Time saving was the particular bonus especially when your own time is factored in - and remember you get a professional job.

Racers on the way to the start can get that extra speed from a one-hour quick jet wash. The weeks before the Round the Island race are particularly busy for Seaflift.

For more leisurely, time-poor boaters, the added benefit of the top-of-therange paint and polish is that the package price can include several lift

and wash-off treatments through the year.

Sealift2 can handle sail or power craft up to 65-feet. The cost for a typical 35foot yacht is around £170 plus vat and the Total Care/AF package is less than £650 plus VAT, plus the cost of paint but including three lift and wash-off treatments.

The Sealift2 kit must be cheaper than the capital and running costs of traditional cranes and lifts. The system is environmentally-friendly with the product of the jet wash recovered for disposal and the water ‘washed’ before return to the sea. Less stressful for the owner, it is certainly customer-facing in terms of time. Every marina should have one.

These should not be the typical budget ‘lift and hold in slings services’ which leave strop marks and can cause stress to the hull. They should be a proper hull cleaning service with no strop marks and a free anode check.

If a boat owner is prepared to commit to a full antifoul and hull polishing service, in return the service provider should be prepared to provide two extra lift and clean services at a nominal rate of say less than £1.50 including VAT per foot, per lift. THE South Coast’s most productive fishing port fills up the western corner of Tor Bay, sheltered by its long breakwater, nodding over to the resort town of Torquay, with its stylish old villas punctuating the cliffs and an hourly ferry connecting the two.

We arrive and are shown to a visitor’s berth at MDL’s marina. They also own Torquay Marina, so you can decide which suits your needs, or wind direction.

However, I want to get over to the huge fish market, built some five years ago and dominating the right hand side of the harbour where the trawlers and smaller fishing boats take pride of place.

We arrive early so head off to find a decent cup of coffee having been tipped off that there are at least 3 good independents. Closest is Millie and Me, then the West Country Deli or the newer kid on the block, but a bit further to walk, is Bay Coffee & Cake Company.

MILLIE AND ME

Sophy runs Millie and Me, which is in King Street conveniently tucked behind the recently refurbished New Quay Inn, overlooking the harbour, but bizarrely not open until 5.30pm. Locals tell us it is a good stop off for a pint or glass of wine before heading over the street to Simply Fish for supper.

We share a bacon butty and I try the flat white. Sophy and a friendly couple at the next table put me straight about where I should head next.

But before I hit the deli I fancy the walk out past the marina to Berry Head as it is still early and a glorious sunny morning. Brixham has some lovely

Did you know? The Berry Head Hotel was built at the start of the 1800s as a military hospital, serving the Napoleonic forts at Berry Head. We rounded Berry Head, passing the somewhat squat Lighthouse before wending our way back into Brixham, bacon butty walked off, but too early for Berry Head high tea, served between 2.30 and 6.30.

Back in Brixham the dilemma is lunch. I have three recommendations; Simply Fish, at the base of Fore Street, across from Millie and Me, Bistro 46, family owned and producing some creative and unusual cooking from a tiny kitchen, but I am whizzing along to Mitch Tonk’s Rockfish.

smugglers’ alleys and we sneak along Newquay Lane walking along the quay, past the marina and straight into an RNLI fundraising day.

On to the little beach, with immaculate Ikea photo fit flat pebble discs, the most perfect skimming stones ever, before climbing the concrete steps up to the street that is signed Berry Head and Shoalstone Lido, which I have been watching on Twitter.

A fabulous local project to update one of our rare seaside swimming pools, with gorgeous retro imagery and a cracking view as you plough up and down to keep warm. Yes, it is refreshing and I note it is the hardy mature mermaids in their cossies and the kids in wetsuits.

BERRY HEAD HOTEL

Berry Head Hotel beckons as I pass some intriguing new builds on my left that would not make Kevin McCloud blush, and along the lush drive to the hotel, which has magnificent views out to sea and over Tor Bay to Torquay.

This makes a delightful lunch or dinner date, as you have walked just far enough to tackle the local Moules Mariniere, or possibly the smoked haddock and Applewood Cheddar fish cake whilst enjoying the Mediterranean view from the terrace.

This lovely light barn of a room, with open rafters and gleaming copper bar is my sort of a place.

The big deck wraps round the building, so plenty of room, choice of sun or shade and looks out over the fleet of working boats to the heritage sailing trawlers, ferries and leisure boats. A feast for the eyes, but what shall I choose for my plate?

Gosh - Rockfish Fritto Misto - red gurnard and monkfish filets with calamari and prawns too? Delightfully and lightfully battered and unlimited fresh cut chips to go with the tartare.

Then I saw tempura fried oysters and by now you might know that I have to have these little crisp gobbets of sea fresh phlegm whenever I see them on

the menu, which is rarely, but Rick Stein often complies.

Rockfish serve them sitting atop their shell which is filled with a vibrant green cucumber relish, which really works and is fresh, not fiery and also good with the chips. My pal has a very generous portion of super fresh, nice and plump, cod goujons with the same unlimited chips, for just £7.95.

FISH MARKET

Now back to the fish market. I had thought I would be able to go in and look round the morning catch as you do in every French town that has a daily fish market, but no, the only glimpse I get is through a little side door halfway along the building where a man is collecting his purchase.

On questioning further I am told I need to return for Fishstock in September, when they open it up to the public.

Now I still need to visit West Country Deli and am so glad I did as I load up with local cheese and eggs and have a quick cortado whilst reading the menu.

This is a great quick lunch stop and the platters look tempting.

A very friendly couple Jo and Mark run this outfit and have chosen their own blend of organic, fair trade and Rainforest Alliance Certified beans. Give it a try.

a cruiser Who enJoys racing Peter Dickens is a retired GP and keen sailor. He has been a berth holder at Eastbourne Marina for ten years and in the midst of a busy season we find out more about this “cruiser who enjoys racing”. people away. I prefer cruising but I also race as it gets us all out on the boat during the week. The Sovereign Harbour Yacht Club races on a Sunday and Wednesday. I would say I am a cruiser that likes to race rather than a racer that cruises!

What type of boat do you oWn? I have an Elan 37 Racer cruiser yacht, which I have had for around four years.

This will be my third boat at Eastbourne; I seem to go up in size each time. It has got far more volume inside, with plenty of accommodation, so I can take up to 8

What is your sailing experience?

I was a short board windsurfer in my twenties to mid-thirties sailing in Bermuda, Maui and South Wales. I have also mono waterskied in Bermuda where I worked for a year and windsurfed in Barbados, Tarifa, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Greece, South Africa and Minorca.

Following 2 knee operations and a slipped disc I took up sailing, predominantly larger boats, and in 1990 when I moved

to Eastbourne with my small children I switched to dinghy sailing. If you add up various trips over the past seven years I have sailed and crewed on other boats from Eastbourne to Gibralter.

your sailing highlights?

I have crossed the Channel on numerous occasions and crewed for both the Round the Island and Royal Escape race twice.

Being a crew member is easy, you can just turn up and it is the owner who has to do the preparation - which I quickly learnt when I went sailing with my two small boys. In the end I had to engage a teenager from the yacht company as charter boats always require two people.

What sailing adventures have you got planned?

In August I sailed a 40-year-old wanderer in Salcombe and was asked to crew on a boat headed to the Canaries from Gibraltar. In early September I planned to go to Dieppe - the first channel crossing with my son before going off to university. I have also been invited as a guest in November to cruise on the Panama Canal in South America which will be very interesting.

What do you do at your Marina?

I am a full time member of the yacht club but they also do a social membership at a much reduced price. It does try to offer a lot – with two floors, it can be rented out for social dos, it holds RYA training courses and they also have a big plasma screen.

What Would be your perfect trip?

I would like to sail on a classic boat off the Scandinavian Coast. I have also never sailed off the coast of Scotland. That would be completely different, with its rocky coastline and would be nice to go with crew.

Who do you tend to sail With?

FOX’S MARINA & BOATYARD

FOX’S Marina is a small, friendly, privately owned marina located in an area of outstanding natural beauty on the banks of the River Orwell.

ACCESS

Fox’s has excellent road and rail connections and offers 24-hour unrestricted access to the River Orwell, Harwich harbour and the sea.

LOCAL EATERIES

Fox’s Yacht Club provides a very friendly welcome to visiting yachtsmen and serves reasonably priced food and beer – opening times vary depending on the season.

The Oyster Reach is a traditional pub overlooking the marina. It is open all day and serves good food and a range of local beers. The adjoining Premier Inn provides good value accommodation if you need extra beds for visiting guests during your stay.

A short walk down river takes you to the Suffolk Food Hall – 2015 winner of the best Local Food Venue in the UK - which has a fantastic café and restaurant with

views over the river and is a wonderful place to stock up with local produce and meat from the farm. Its ‘jumping pillow’ provides hours of free entertainment for children young and old.

A longer walk along the river (or short RIB trip) takes you to Pin Mill, where the Butt & Oyster, one of the best-loved riverside pubs in Suffolk, is renowned for its good beer, good food and great views.

Associated with and famously featuring in Arthur Ransome’s novel “We Didn’t Mean to go to Sea”.

The Ipswich waterfront has many restaurants and bars, whilst within a 10 mile radius there are numerous fantastic country pubs and restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets.

The marina is an easy 90-minute sail or motor up the River Orwell from Harwich Harbour. The River Orwell and its approaches are used by commercial shipping, and yachts must keep to the correct channel in the entrance to the river whilst navigating Harwich Harbour and maintain a listening watch on the VHF at all times.

By road, Fox’s Marina is just two minutes from the A12/ A14 intersection, with direct routes from London and the Midlands. The Ipswich mainline rail station is just 10 minutes by car/taxi while London Liverpool Street is 60 minutes by train. For those arriving by air Stanstead Airport is 60 minutes away by car.

Fox’s was expanded significantly to its present size in 1985. The marina operates 2 travel lifts and can lift vessels up to 70 tonnes and 26m LOA. As well as walk aboard berthing there is fresh water and 220v power on all berths.

CRUISING

Located on the stunningly beautiful River Orwell, but within easy reach of numerous scenic destinations, Fox’s makes a great base from which to explore the east coast.

The River Orwell estuary marks the southern most point of the beautiful Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The estuary is specially protected because of its national and international importance for wildlife. Many thousands of wintering waders and wildfowl depend on the food and habitat provided there.

Among the sea lavender and common reed can be found redshank, lapwing, knot, curlew, dunlin, avocet, grey plover and many more birds that favour the salt marshes. The Orwell’s mud flats are an important habitat

THINGS TO DO

In past centuries, Ipswich and its river were famed throughout the world for the innovation and quality of its shipbuilding, with such famous designers as Sir Thomas Slade, the naval architect of Nelson’s Flagship, HMS Victory, who is buried in St Clement’s churchyard in Ipswich. In 1797 Lord and Lady Nelson moved to Ipswich, and in 1800 Lord Nelson was appointed High Steward of Ipswich.

Ipswich’s reputation for quality and skilled shipbuilding had already been established in past centuries such that many of the Admiralty-commissioned wooden warships were constructed here. Since the early days of yachting for pleasure, this same tradition of invention and world-beating revolutionary new design flourished and continues to flourish in local boat yards such as Fox’s today.

Ipswich is one of the Haven ports and is still a working port, handling several million tonnes of cargo each year. Prior to decommissioning, HMS Grafton was a regular visitor to the port and has special links with the town and the county of Suffolk. HMS Orwell, named after the river, is also closely linked with the town.

One of Ipswich’s most famous sons, Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, was born in Ipswich around 1475. One of Henry VIII’s closest political allies, he founded a college in the town in 1528, before

Between December and March the mud flats get very busy and, as a result, the bird watching is well worth travelling for.

The adjacent River Stour is particularly scenic, with numerous anchorages. The Walton Backwaters are made up of numerous creeks, inlets and islands to explore, including the beautiful sandy spit and lagoons at Stone Point.

To the south, the Colne and Blackwater estuaries offer varied sailing, while heading north takes you to the River Deben where you can cruise upriver past Ramsholt (The Ramsholt Arms, a great riverside pub, is well worth a lunchtime stop), passing Waldringfield and on to the pretty town of Woodbridge, with its numerous facilities, pubs and restaurants. From

There are many miles of scenic footpaths along both sides of the Rivers Orwell, Stour and Deben and throughout the Shotley Peninsula. A public footpath passes through the marina, which links to the coastal path along the River Orwell.

The South Suffolk cycle route can be joined a short distance from the marina and includes signed leisure routes through some of the prettiest villages in Suffolk.

Woodbridge it is a short taxi ride to Sutton Hoo, home to one of the greatest archeological discoveries of all time.

A little further up the coast is the River Ore/Alde and the ancient riverside port of Orford with its unique shingle spit, the largest in Europe, and on to Aldeburgh, a gem of a seaside town on Suffolk’s Heritage coast and close to the famous Snape Maltings concert venue, made famous by Benjamin Britten.

For those wishing to head further afield, Holland, Belgium and France are all within easy reach, Ostend is only 79 miles from Harwich.

ORFORD NESS: An internationally important nature reserve with a fascinating 20th century military history, this remote shingle spit, the largest in Europe, can only be reached by ferry from Orford.

CHRISTCHURCH MANSION: This beautiful Tudor mansion is the jewel in the crown of Ipswich’s historic past boasting over 500 years of history.

LANGUARD FORT: Languard Fort, standing at the mouth of the River Orwell, is the site of the last opposed seaborne invasion of England in 1667 and the first land battle of the Royal Marines. The current fort was built in the 18th century, and modified in the 19th century with substantial additional 19th-20th century outside batteries.

BERMUDA RUM

Gosling’s Black Seal rum from Bermuda is at the show again along with Gosling’s own brand Stormy ginger beer for making its trademarked Dark & Stormy cocktail. “If it is not Gosling’s rum it is not a Dark & Stormy,” they proclaim at their colourful pop-up stand near the Princess footbridge from the Holiday Inn area to Mayflower Park.

Gosling’s is Bermuda’s oldest commercial company, founded in 1806 by Englishman James Gosling and still in family ownership. Not surprisingly, Gosling’s has been appointed official partner of the 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda in 2017 and for the whole of the preliminary Louis Vuitton World Series, which began with July’s event at Portsmouth.

Black Seal is a traditional dark rum with intricate hints of butterscotch, vanilla and caramel. The Beverage Tasting Institute recently awarded it their highest level Platinum Medal. It
