SHOOTIN’ THE BREEZE

We caught up with Simrad’s executive vice president, Mike Fargo, to discuss the Simrad NSX.

QTell us what Simrad’s NSX is all about? MF: The NSX is Simrad’s new chartplotter and fishfinder that streamlines and simplifies the boating experience. It is a great product for boating adventurers of all sorts to create better trips and experiences on the water.

QWho is this Simrad product geared towards? MF: The NSX is really designed towards adventurers for the water lifestyle… weekend cruising, family fishing, diving, watersports, getting to the sandbar and back - the NSX works great for all that. It comes in three screen sizes and it is really ideal for powerboats ranging from 16 – 50ft. It fills an important void for new and casual users delivering an easy-to-use navigation system. All new menus and tool sets were redesigned with the casual boater in mind, yet the experienced boater will also be delighted by all the features we have packed in.

QHow does it set itself apart? MF: It has an aesthetic design that is beautiful – refined and slim – which are Simrad hallmarks. The NSX has such a beautiful display with bright, crisp graphics and large fonts. This matches perfectly with our new C-MAP charting which allows for stunning visual charts. And all this in a small compact design. Each size is extremely size efficient with less bezel on the side which means you might well be able to fit a larger Simrad NSX on your dashboard versus other chartplotters.

QWhere does this fit in the Simrad portfolio? MF: We have really focused on making the new Simrad operating system simple. We have added more aids, wizards and presets than ever before. For casual users, they will have the sense of a guiding hand. Early testers have told us they get comfortable using the NSX very quickly. Experienced users meanwhile will appreciate the finer details like real-time visual setting adjustment – the Simrad DNA is there.

QWhich features would you especially like to highlight? MF: I have mentioned the stunning visual charts and charting capability, but the NSX is also compatible with our performance halo radars and has a built-in powerful 1000 watt fishfinder. It is, as you would expect, expandable and integrates with many of the Simrad Command boat system partners that deliver additional functions like audio and digital switching. Boaters who love the Simrad Cruise and Simrad Go family of chartplotters will be tempted to upgrade to NSX. We always aim to push the envelope, so it is no surprise that with this product we have squeezed in a lot of the functionality of our performance flagship NSS and NSO larger systems.

QSo, what is your favourite thing about this product? MF: I like that it is approachable. The most common story we hear is that a lot of boaters do not use or are not comfortable using a lot of the functionality in their chartplotters or navigation systems. When you start using NSX, learning how to operate it and configuring it for your boat, you find out that it is super easy. We focused on making that process easy and fun. We wanted to deliver better boating adventures. I love that about this product.
