The Artemis Challenge at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week has again attracted the biggest names in sailing and as the precursor to the Rolex Fastnet it looks set to be another magnificent spectacle of big boat racing in British waters.

Welcoming an impressive fleet of IMOCA 60s, Volvo 65s and powerful multihulls, the 2015 edition of the celebrated annual charity race around the Isle of Wight looks set to be the largest in its nine-year history.

The annual 50 mile sprint, which follows the original America’s Cup route west around the Isle of Wight, has become one of the pinnacle events at the world’s largest sailing regatta. The Artemis Challenge has welcomed some of the most celebrated sailors over the years.

Following in the footsteps of the great names like Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, Michel Desjoyeaux and Ian Walker, 2015 looks on course to set a new standard as a number of the world’s most decorated offshore racers will take on the Artemis Challenge including hugo Boss’s Alex Thomson and fresh from the Volvo Ocean Race, Sam Davies and Team SCA. Starting on the Royal Yacht Squadron Line on 13 August, the fastest IMOCA 60 to complete the course around the Isle of Wight (weather permitting) will win £10,000 for the charity of their choice.

THE build-up and coverage was surely unlike anything we have seen in recent time in this country for a sailing event.

If, like us, you were in Portsmouth for the America’s Cup World Series you will know what an incredible atmosphere there was.

However it was a weekend of very mixed fortunes with an incredible high on the first day of racing which saw Sir Ben Ainslie’s Land Rover BAR team finish at the top of the leader board.

The joy felt by fans soon turned to disappointment when, on day two of racing, the high winds led to the cancellation of the entire event. This left thousands of fans with no choice but to head home having seen no action on the water at all. With no racing the winners of the event were crowned based on just one day’s racing. Good news for the home team, but everyone would have preferred to see more competitive racing.

Let us hope they have better conditions in Gothenburg for the next event. However before we turn our attention to the next stage of the World Series, from 27 – 20 August, there is another home event that has everyone talking.

It is, of course, Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week, the largest sailing regatta of its kind in the world.

It all begins on 8 August when more than 8,000 sailors will be racing in a fantastic range of boats across numerous classes. We have a full

preview of the event over on page 20, plus keep up-to-date with the news as it happens at www.allatsea.co.uk.

As well as participating in or watching all the boating events we are lucky enough to have taking place this summer, we also need to squeeze in time for a holiday. This month we take a look at sailing in the Sporades, an archipelago along the east coast of Greece.

Whether sailing around the UK, the Med or further afield there are incredible places to visit. We would love to know where you are holidaying this year, and be sure to send some photos of you and your boat. We will create a holiday gallery showcasing our favourites.

Talking of holidays, are you planning a trip to Brazil next August?

Unbelievably it is just a year to go until the Rio Olympics when 10,500 athletes from 205 countries will be competing for those elusive gold medals. It all kicks off on 5 August, so put the date on your 2016 calendar. Catch up with all the GB sailing team news on page 23 as they prepare for the second Test Event in Rio. By the way, did you know it will be the first Olympic Games to take place in South America?

Anyway, back to this August and have an amazing month – whatever your plans and wherever you are. See you in September when we will have a packed Southampton Boat Show issue for you.

FROM PAGE 1: DESPITE the impending bad weather the first day of the America’s Cup World Series got off to an historic start on 23 July.

It was the first time that the America’s Cup challengers had lined up against each other on the Solent since the very first race for the famous ‘100 Guineas’ trophy back in 1851. On that occasion Queen Victoria watched the race, which was around the Isle of Wight.

Before the AC45s took to the water the famous 164-year-old ‘Auld Mug’ was displayed in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard before being paraded through the crowds along the seafront to the Fanzone Arena.

After the Cup’s parade it was the turn of the AC45s, with the Official Parade of Sail. Escorted by HMS St Albans, a Type 23 frigate and guardship for the AC45 fleet in Portsmouth, the six AC45s sailed along the packed shore allowing spectators to watch the Challengers for the 35th America’s Cup sailing together for the first time.

Each team performed a flyby, demonstrating how the AC45F’s ‘foil’ high above the water, and enjoyed some informal practice racing to give a taste of the weekend’s action to come.

Ahead of the racing Sir Ben Ainslie’s Land Rover BAR team had already been picked out by their fellow competitors as favourites.

“I think Ben is clearly faster than everyone,” ORACLE TEAM USA skipper Jimmy Spithill said, to the applause of a home crowd eager to support the team.

However it was not until the first official practice on Friday 24 July that the thousands of fans saw for themselves the AC45s in competitive action.

Sir Ben and his team did not disappoint the home crowd with a victory in the first race ahead of America’s Cup defender Oracle Team USA. The second practice race saw a change in fortunes, in lighter winds, with Emirates Team New Zealand

winning from Artemis Racing, with Land Rover BAR third.

The weather conditions, which were to plague the entire weekend, led to Friday night’s South Coast Proms Royal Marines Concert being cancelled. Tickets holders were offered a refund and free tickets to attend the Saturday evening Portsmouth Live concert.

With Saturday 25 July marking the start of official racing Sir Ben Ainslie was eager to get started: “It is so exciting to be getting into racing that counts towards the America’s Cup. We have this Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series over the next two years, we are thrilled to be starting out in Portsmouth and we can not wait to get out of the starting blocks.”

After the heavy rain on Friday, conditions were fantastic for the teams as they began the long road to Bermuda in 2017. Winds of 10 to 14 knots allowed the teams to demonstrate their skills on the new foiling class of catamaran.

With almost 50,000 fans ashore and more than 15,000 people on boats around the race course the support was incredible.

In race one Emirates Team New Zealand took the early lead, but Land Rover BAR overhauled them on Leg 4 and extended away to take the win to a thunderous reception from the crowds onshore. Oracle Team USA came through to take second, powering away from the penultimate mark at 30 knots, while Emirates Team New Zealand finished third.

In the second race Land Rover BAR were among the early leaders, but after the first mark Emirates Team New Zealand opted to sail along the shore side and picked up better wind to take a big advantage.

Groupama Team France hunted them around the course in second, until Land Rover BAR overtook them at the fifth gate mark, to finish in second. The French team held on for third.

After leading his team to a win and a second place finish in the two races Sir Ben Ainslie said: “We were blown away by the level of support. We are very proud to be based here in Portsmouth to bring the America’s Cup World Series here, and are so grateful to so many people for turning out, it means a huge amount to us.

“I have never seen anything like it in all of my sailing career, so I think we are all a little bit emotional, a little bit gob-smacked. It is just fantastic for our team – for all of our guys back at base in Portsmouth, and everyone else that supports the team, we are just delighted that so many people came out to support the event.”

Racing was due to continue on Sunday, with double points on offer for the two races. However the weather had different plans. With winds in excess of 30mph forecast, racing was brought forward to allow at least one of the two scheduled races to be completed.

However by late morning it was announced that the entire event had been cancelled. The Waterfront Festival Arena and Fanzone Arena were also closed and disappointed fans were asked to leave the venue. Refunds are available for those who bought tickets in the Fanzone Arena and Grandstand.

The day’s racing might have been cancelled, but there still needed to be a winner. Saturday’s results stood and the winners of the first event of the 35th America’s Cup were Britain’s Land Rover BAR. Ainslie and his team, wing trimmer Paul Campbell-James, runner David ‘Freddie’ Carr, trimmer Nick Hutton and bow/tactician Giles Scott, were congratulated on their win at the official prize giving by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The Royal couple were on site throughout the day and met with all of the teams, presenting the awards for the regatta.

“We are absolutely delighted to win the first Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series event here in Portsmouth.

This is a great start for us in our America’s Cup journey,” said Land Rover BAR’s Sir Ben Ainslie.

“It is a real shame we could not race today considering all the effort that has gone into the event and the support we have had from the local fans here in Portsmouth. But that is the weather and we can not control it.”

Next up in the World Series is Gothenburg from 28 – 30 August. This is the home event for Artemis Racing and the Swedish challenger will be looking to improve on their disappointing last place finish in Portsmouth.

NEWS IN BRIEF HMS VICTORY

The National Museum of the Royal Navy, Portsmouth is completing a historically accurate re-painting of HMS Victory, the most celebrated ship in naval history. The repainting is due for completion in September with visitors able to witness the transformation as it takes place. It is part of the most comprehensive and forensic programme of conservation work to be done on HMS Victory since she was first installed in dry dock at the heart of Portsmouth Historic Dockyard in the 1920s.

PADSTOW RNLI volunteer lifeboat crew met the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall during a visit to the Cornish town.

THE National Museum of the Royal Navy has opened HMS M.33 to the public for the first time in her history following the completion of an extensive conservation project.

HMS M.33 is the only surviving Navy ship from the ill-fated Gallipoli campaign and has great historic importance.

This is despite the fact she was constructed and sent into service so speedily that she did not even warrant a name.

Although the Gallipoli Campaign claimed 100,000 lives of personnel from all round the world, M.33 was considered a lucky ship and, despite being showered by shell splinters, she

suffered no casualties. Visitors will have the unusual experience of descending 6m to the bottom of the dock, before stepping aboard the ship. Public access to the dry docks has previously been limited but the opening of HMS M.33 will allow the Museum to show off an 1801 dock that put Portsmouth at the centre of the Navy’s power.

The platform at the base of the dock will allow an unseen and dramatic viewpoint of HMS M.33’s bow, flat bottom and the dry dock itself.

HMS M.33 is positioned in No.1 Dry Dock at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, alongside HMS Victory and the Mary Rose Museum.

Fuel free outboard option BREAKWATER PROJECT IF you are looking for a fuel free, quiet outboard the Flover 33 is virtually silent, making it ideal for fishing and nature photography. Because there is no fuel, it is an odour-free, environmentally-friendly alternative to a traditional petrol outboard.

Weighing only 10kg, the motor is quick and simple to rig and because much of the weight is near the two-bladed 23cm prop, it is a mere 7kg net on the boat’s transom.

The Southampton-based SS Shieldhall – the oldest passenger cargo steamship still active in Europe – celebrated her 60th birthday with a cruise, following some of the route taken whilst in service with Southern Water in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

KILL CORD SURVEY

The RYA has a long-standing commitment to education about safety afloat. It has championed the use of kill cords on small open powerboats for many years. A new survey examines causes of kill cord failure other than human error.

COWES Harbour Commissioners have decided to proceed with construction of the new breakwater.

An extraordinary board meeting looked at the formal Cowes Breakwater Project review.

The review addressed the issues of changes in tidal flows and potential changes to the sedimentation regime as a result of the 2014 breakwater construction.

The commissoners unanimously agreed to proceed with the scheduled 2015 construction work and the placement of the rock armour.

They also confirmed their commitment to another formal project review and stakeholder consultation before finalising any decisions on the next phases of the project. The next phases include the dredging of the new Eastern Channel and extension

Historic junk sails again FOLLOWING a seven-year extensive restoration in Portsmouth the unique historic junk yacht Boleh is back in the water.

Boleh, whose name means ‘Can Do’ in Malay, is a 40ft wooden junk yacht designed and built after WWII in Singapore by a Naval Officer, Commander Robin Kilroy, DSC. He then sailed her back to Salcombe, Devon in 1950.

She is constructed from traditional materials to a mixed junk/Bermudan rig design with many novel features – such as portholes made from the windscreens of Japanese fighter aircraft.

Boleh has undergone a major programme of work that has seen her stripped almost bare, including the removal of her engine, deck, superstructure and

masts. Having been fitted out to the highest standards with a new deck and masts, together with an auxiliary propulsion system using the latest diesel electric technology, she is now afloat in Chichester Marina awaiting sails and sea trials.

During the course of her restoration young apprentices have been trained in traditional shipwright skills and children from Portsmouth’s Charter Academy have learnt about Boleh through the use of media technology.

Boleh is due to set sail for her voyage to Falmouth, where she will be operated by the charity Sea Sanctuary, in mid-August passing the town of Salcombe in Devon where she arrived 65 years ago after her voyage from Singapore.

WORLD VOYAGE TALL SHIP’S UK STOPOVER

ALTHOUGH the berths at Southampton’s port are usually filled with cruise liners, container ships and tugboats, a more unusual vessel has also paid a visit.

The 144ft Australian tall ship, Young Endeavour, berthed in Southampton before heading to Lowestoft, where she was built.

From there she will head to the North Sea to participate in tall ship festivals and races.

The ship was given to Australia as a bicentennial gift in 1988. Since then the Young Endeavour has been in service as part of a youth scheme that has taken more than 11,000 young Australians on sailing adventures.

This is Young Endeavour’s fifth passage in a round the world journey that began in Sydney on 22 December 2014. The ship has so far visited Cape Horn in Chile, Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, Cadiz in Spain, Gallipoli and Canakkale in Turkey.

CLIPPER CREWS GET SET

A spectacular departure is planned for the biennial classic Clipper Round the World Yacht Race from St Katharine Docks in front of Tower Bridge on 30 August.

The fleet will arrive at the marina on 21 August with the Race Village open daily from 22 - 30 August. On departure day, the entertainment will get underway at 1100 with all crews taking the Central Basin pontoon stage between 1300 and 1400.

There will be a parade for all 12 yachts going through Tower Bridge, twice.

“The fleet will slip from 1415 and parade in the Thames together with a flotilla of spectator boats,” said Race Director Justin Taylor.

“At 1530 Tower Bridge will open to let all the 70ft yachts enter the Upper Pool.

“The final parade down the Thames will start at 1600 when Tower Bridge opens again and the fleet makes its way out of London on its 11-month circumnavigation.”

The first race to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil will get underway on 31 August off Southend in Essex.

Sir Robin Knox-Johnston said: “To be able to mark our tenth edition in another spectacular start from London on the Thames is great news.

British sailing star Nick Thompson admitted he was “over the moon” to have finally sealed World Championship gold, winning with a race to spare in Kingston, Canada. Thompson becomes the first British Laser World Champion since Paul Goodison (2009) to claim the coveted world crown in the highly competitive men’s single-handed class, having won two silvers and two bronze medals from previous editions. Off to a flying start WEYMOUTH and Portland National Sailing Academy hosted the Red Bull Foiling Generation for the British qualification rounds. The global sailing series is open to talented sailors aged 16 - 20 who race the innovative Flying Phantom class catamarans.

GJW Direct SailFest, a multi-class event, this year welcomed the inaugural D-Zero Nationals and the RAF SA Regatta.

On day 1 Dan Holman took the first yellow jersey for the inaugural D-Zero Nationals with a 1st and 2nd. In the Handicap fleet things were very tight with the ISOs battling it out and John Gill and Juliet Daniels leading over night by one point.

GJW Direct SailFest Day 2 saw less sunshine but more breeze, gusting 18 kts. The breezier conditions suited the ISO of John Gill and Juliet Daniels who managed a 1,1,2,2 scoreline to increase their overall lead. Finn sailor Cameron Tweedle managed to take the other two wins

of the day to move up to second place.

D-Zero designer, Dan Holman, delivered a master class in sailing his new boat in breeze, taking all three bullets and often a leg ahead.

Competition for the next places was much closer, with Laser sailor Ian Morgan battling Contender Champion Stuart Jones.

On the final day the conditions suited the Finns, with both boats taking 1st and 2nd, and allowing Cameron Tweedle to win GJW Direct SailFest 2015.

Dan Holman continued his winning streak to become the first D-Zero National Champion with an almost perfect score, discarding a 1st and 2nd. Despite two

discarded eighth places on the final day, Ian Morgan managed to hold onto second place, with David Summerville moving up to third and also taking the Master’s trophy.

Hill Head SC, which had several members competing, including the Morgans, lifted the club trophy while the prestigious GJW Direct Outstanding Achievement Trophy was awarded to the RAF SA support team, who provided safety cover and shore based assistance.

GJW Direct SailFest also hosted the 2015 RAF SA regatta, which saw Cameron Tweedle winning from Jon Tweedle and the RS400 of Steve Bales and James Sargeant taking the third spot on the podium.

TRIO OF RIVAS HEADING TO CANNES

RIVA’S 88 Florida (bottom) with her poweropening cockpit roof is now on the water and has passed her sea trials with flying colours. This 4-cabin, 8-berth yacht will be one of the main attractions at the Cannes Boat Show in September.

The Riva 88 Domino (middle), the hardtop yacht from which the convertible 88 Florida was derived, has itself undergone some major improvements and is now relaunched as the Riva 88 Domino Super.

Completing the trio of newly-launched Rivas is this latest addition to the fleet, the Riva 76 Coupé (top). Essentially a 3-cabin, 6-berth (plus crew) version of the 88 Domino Super, she also features a top deck but the upper helm is an option.

WILLIAMS’ TENDER TOUCH

WILLIAMS Performance Tenders has signed a long-term supply agreement with engine manufacturer BRP. It follows the success of the Williams Sportjet range powered by BRP’s Rotax 4-TEC 150 and 200 engines.

BRP will also supply Williams with the smaller and lighter Rotax ACE jet propulsion systems for a new range of jetpowered RIBs to be unveiled in early 2016.

The agreement with BRP will see Williams continue to fit the Rotax 4-TEC 150 and 200 engines to the Sportjet 460 and 520, which were respectively launched in 2014 and earlier this year.

Expect further additions to the Sportjet line-up later this year and into 2016.

OUTBOARD FIRST LOOK AT SUNSEEKER THEFT WARNING 116 YACHT DATATAG are warning owners of marine equipment - especially outboard motors - to be extra vigilant.

Outboard theft is by far the biggest issue in the marine market and accounts for nearly 60 per cent of all marine crime. The issue is on the increase say Datatag as figures show outboard theft in the first half of 2015 has increased by over 40 per cent as a proportion of all marine crime.

According to Stolenboats.org, outboards under 20hp account for 70 per cent of outboard thefts. A sub 20hp engine is an easy target for criminals and can quickly be removed from transoms.

The effect of such crime is not limited to the cost of replacing the stolen outboard. Often in an attempt to remove the engine as quickly as possible gangs use chainsaws to cut through transoms leaving boats with irreparable damage.

Sailing into paradise Colin and Julia

Julia and i first sailed in Greece over 25 years ago and the ‘wine dark sea’ has been calling us back ever since. it was our first experience of Mediterranean sailing and the lack of tidal influence and the promise of wall-to-wall sunshine meant there was little serious argument.

Our destination in May 1983 was the Sporades, notably Skiathos, Skopelos, Skyros and other associated islands, joining up with one of the early flotilla companies who were forging a name for themselves at that time.

We continued to visit the Med for many years including Yugoslavia (now Croatia) and Turkey where we purchased three Westerly Fulmars and organised a group of uK soldiers to sail them back to France as an ‘exercise’, but that is a story for another day.

last summer we headed over with the promise of sun and afternoon winds with the added bonus of sailing with our family.

FAMILY HOLIDAY

after victualing the yacht in the village near the boat we made our way out between the island, which protects the base from the northerly winds, and the mainland, into the Gulf of Volos and then sailed away for a few days.

The waters in the Gulf tend to be sheltered with some idyllic spots to anchor for the night. it is from here that Jason is said to have set sail on the argo in search of the Golden Fleece.

The harbours and villages of the Trikeri peninsular at the southern end of the Gulf are completely unspoilt with a smattering of yachts and small local fishing boats and so often not a sail on the horizon - slightly different to the Solent and the Channel. leaving the Gulf by way of the Trikeri Channel for Orei on the northern coast of Evia, the largest of the Greek islands, we passed the little village of Pegadi, the bay where achilles is said to have set sail for Troy.

Orei was once an important maritime city, as the acropolis above the harbour reminds us, but is now a busy little village with a well protected harbour and many

ISLAND REGULARS

That first adventure to the Sporades has been in our memories ever since and we have continued to return on a regular basis, not least because our son, daughter in-law and two grandchildren now live in the beautiful unspoilt village of Milina in Volos Bay, some five hours sail from Skiathos. andrew and Christine have lived in the village for 15 years and after managing a charter operation decided to start their own business, a&C Yachting Milina. With 43ft Beneteau yachts based in the unspoilt pretty Milina harbour they have now given us further reasons to visit the Bay of Volos more often.

tavernas and cafes. it even has a small fairground with bumper cars that attract the children at weekends, not least our grandchildren. after victualing once more, from the many and varied shops in Orei, and waiting for the wind which inevitably comes in at lunchtime, the channel towards the island of Skiathos led us past a massive mountainside marble quarry and then to a long sandy beach together with a tiny harbour by the name of Koukounaries.

With room for a few kiekies for the local fishermen there is little space for a yacht, so we lay off with a kedge anchor and a line ashore which gives a secure berth particularly if the steady northerly wind should break all the rules and come in strong overnight.

NEXT STOP SKIATHOS

Next stop is to Skiathos Town which has a well protected harbour, although one of the few in the Sporades that charge for mooring overnight. The whitewashed houses with classic red tiled roofs meander up the steep slopes towards the iconic ‘windmill’ restaurant with views and a menu to die for.

Moving on the island of Skopelos beckons and with it a sail through the ‘Gates of the Wind’, so named for the formidable northerly that funnels down through the gaps in the islands, and then into the enchanting pine clad Panormos Bay where anchoring in 20m and taking a line to the shore is the order of the

day swiftly followed by swimming and snorkelling to cool down. last year we travelled in July with temperatures in the upper 30s, but normally we prefer early June or September when 25 to 30C is that bit more comfortable, but with care and plenty of swimming and a good bimini the magic of Greece always wins.

Getting to the Sporades is simple. Either fly to Volos or Skiathos direct from Gatwick using one of the many charter flights or fly scheduled airlines to Thessalonica or Athens and travel by road and ferry. Or you could do as we did last year - drive to Venice then ferry to Igonomitsa and then a marvellous drive across Greece.

ALMOST 3 million Brits take to the water in one form or other each year. You might have your sights set on a certain type of sailing - but do not rule other options out until you understand what they involve.

You will probably find no shortage of seasoned boaters happy to share their opinions - but remember everyone is biased towards their chosen craft. This is especially the case if you are torn between a sailing yacht or a motor cruiser. There is many a yachtsman who will tell you that motor cruising “isn’t a real sport”, whereas motor cruiser enthusiasts can be equally as disparaging when it comes to yachts.

Whatever type of sailing you are considering, make a resolution to book a taster session this summer. Far from being ‘closed shops’, sailing and boating clubs are extremely welcoming to newcomers who want to see what it is all about.

TIME TO TRAIN

All types of sailing involve a life-long learning curve.

Once you have got a clearer idea of what type of sailing is for you, there is no time like the present for getting that learning process underway.

Once again, your local club should be able to point you in the right direction. The RYA is the national body for all forms of boating and its website (www.rya.org.uk) features a handy search app for identifying specific courses and providers.

BUYING A BOAT

If you find yourself bitten by the sailing bug, there is a strong likelihood that you will find yourself browsing the classifieds looking for your first boat. With a new craft comes the obvious benefit of a manufacturer’s warranty and support.

With a second hand boat comes the risk of not knowing its history and, especially for novices, not being able to spot the

warning signs that a particular boat may be worth giving a wide berth. For peace of mind, consider a report from a marine surveyor. To locate one, check out the Yacht Designers and Surveyors Association.

This organisation is also a useful source of general hints and tips for boat buyers.

STAY PROTECTED

You have found the sailing niche that is right for you. You have undertaken enough training to feel confident in control of your own craft. You may even have invested in a boat of your own. So what’s left?

EVENT NEWS ROLEX FASTNET RACE PREVIEW

ROLEX FASTNET RACE The world’s largest, most diverse fleet of offshore racing yachts will set sail from the Solent on 16 August in the Royal Ocean Racing Club’s biennial Rolex Fastnet Race.

ENTRIES to this year’s Rolex Fastnet Race opened on 12 January with an expectation, following four editions that were oversubscribed, that places would go in a matter of hours. For this, the 90th Anniversary of the Fastnet Race, just 24 minutes after the online entry system opened, over 300 boats had registered. The fast pace continued and by the end of the afternoon 375 boats had signed up for the biennial event, which has been an established fixture on the ocean racing circuit since 1925.

As one of the most popular events in sailing the original limit of 300 boats racing for the overall handicap prize under IRC was increased to 340 in 2013 due to the increased demand.

In addition to this group is the ‘nonIRC’ fleet, including many top grand prix race boat classes such as the IMOCA 60s, that compete in the Vendee Globe singlehanded non-stop round the world race, and the Class40s.

Its diversity is one of the special aspects of the Rolex Fastnet Race.

At one end are the high profile professional sailing teams who come from the four corners of the globe, often with the world’s biggest, fastest state-of-the-art racing yachts.

At the other end are those taking on their own personal challenges whose training will, nonetheless, have included at least 300 miles of offshore racing (the mandatory requirement to qualify for entry).

RORC Racing Manager Nick Elliott said: “The Rolex Fastnet Race has great reverence with sailors worldwide wishing to compete in this iconic race and add it to their bucket list.”

One to watch out for, and indeed will be hard to miss, is Concise 2.

Phillippa is one of the few sailors, man or woman, to have raced around

the world in a Class40, coming third in the Global Ocean Race. Phillippa has also competed in two previous Rolex Fastnet Races.

“This race is all about trying to give girls opportunity,” said Phillippa. “The Fastnet is an incredible opportunity to experience a major offshore race and it is a fact that few girls really get the chance to do it in a high performance boat.”

Starting from The Royal Yacht Squadron line in Cowes, yachts will race a course of 608nm via the Fastnet Rock to the finish line at the western end of the breakwater in Plymouth Harbour.

As ever the course takes the fleet west along the south coast of England, across the Celtic Sea to the Fastnet Rock off the tip of southwest Ireland, south around Bishop Rock and the Scilly Isles and back east to the finish in Plymouth.

Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week is one of the UK’s longest running sporting events with a history going back 189 years. One of this summer’s highlights, 100,000 people will be enjoying the incredible atmosphere that is Cowes Week.

WIth up to 40 races every day and around 1,000 boats taking part, Cowes Week is the largest sailing regatta of its kind in the world. In total 8,500 sailors will be taking part from incredibly diverse backgrounds. While some competitors are Olympians others will be weekend sailors.

Although the regatta is over 180 years old, it is only in relatively recent times that the Week has become an integrated series of races organised by a single body. During the post-war era, each day of racing had been run by a different Cowes or Solent mainland club. then Cowes Combined Clubs was established in the 1960s to run the racing as a single organisation. there are 10 member clubs within the CCC and on each day of the regatta an individual club presents its own trophies prizes.

MIXING IT UP

Within the 40 different handicap, one-design and multihull classes races every day there is a complete mixture of classic and ultra-modern designs. Some classes were being raced over 50 years ago including Dragons, Solent Sunbeams and Redwings, while new classes are welcomed too.

Most classes start and finish on the Royal Yacht Squadron line and sail varied ‘round-the-cans’ courses designed to suit the style of boat and prevailing wind and tide conditions on each day. the sheltered waters and unusual tidal conditions of the Solent make for some interesting and challenging sailing.

LADIES DAY ladies Day will return to Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week on 11 August with a number of celebrations culminating in the presentation of the ladies Day trophy at an evening reception. ladies Day was introduced for the first time in 2006 to champion the role of women in sailing and the sheer number of female competitors racing at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week. there are some 8,000 competitors taking part in the regatta and around a third of them are female.

Feeling social?

FOR many it is about soaking up the atmosphere and making the most of the social side of Cowes Week. the Green offers a panoramic viewing platform of the yachts as they battle their way to the finish. In addition, there are opportunities to get afloat to watch the racing from the spectator boat.

ENTERING THE REGATTA

When taking part it is important to read all the regulations. For example, before entering one of the handicap classes (IRC for larger monohulls, MOCRA for multihulls or ISCRS for cruising boats) boats need an up-to-date rating. It is

possible, however, to enter before the rating is sorted out.

All entrants or their representatives must register in person at the Regatta Centre before the end of their protest time limit on the day of their first race. the Centre is also the information hub for all racing questions.

Before the regatta starts there is a briefing, which takes place on the Friday evening before the event starts.

Although not compulsory, attendance by one or two sailors from each boat is recommended.

Given the number of competitors involved it is not surprising that the Sailing Instructions for Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week are generally more complex than other regattas. It is important to read them thoroughly.

If you do not have a boat there are options open to would-be competitors.

Competing teams are often on the look-out for additional crew members.

Alternatively there are chartering options available to sailors.

A few simple checks leading up to the regatta can make a significant difference to your overall results.

It is worth investing some time in making sure your boat will perform at its best, without unnecessary breakages and with your optimum boat speeds easily achieved across a wide range of conditions. Although at this stage it is almost certainly too late to undertake major changes to your boat, do not underestimate the effect that many incremental improvements can have on your overall results. the single most important aspect is to be sure that you can have full confidence in the reliability of the boat and its equipment in any weather conditions you might encounter. Deck gear in particular needs to be carefully checked over to ensure there is no damage and should be serviced to minimise friction.

Similarly, it is worth examining sails, especially spinnakers, for the kind of minor damage that can rapidly escalate over a week of hard sailing.

Running rigging should be checked at the same time as deck fittings to ensure there are no areas of chafe

and that systems run smoothly with minimal friction.

Safety equipment is just as important as a reliable boat, so now is the time to check that bilge pumps operate properly, and essentials such as lifejackets are in good condition and recently serviced. Similarly, you need to be sure that any other equipment required by one design class rules, or Category 4 of the ISAF Offshore Special Regulations for the yachts in Black Group, is on board and in good serviceable condition.

Having repeatable settings for halyard and sheet tension is a key factor in being able to have confidence in your boat speed. One of the quickest and easiest routes to improved performance is therefore simply marking settings on as many lines as possible.

On larger yachts this approach also works on spinnaker guys – put a mark with a waterproof marker pen to show when there’s enough slack for gybing.

If you do not get them in exactly the right place the first time do not worry – it is still a big help to have a mark in approximately the right place and you can refine the settings over time.

the first race was for a Gold Cup of the Value of £100, held in 1826 for just seven yachts under the flag of the Royal Yacht Club (which became the Royal Yacht Squadron in 1833). the next year King George IV indicated his approval of the event by presenting a cup (the King’s Cup, presented at subsequent events until 1939) to mark the occasion, and the event became known as Cowes Regatta. this was run as a three-day, then a four-day, event and quickly became part of the social calendar.

“ULTIMATELY the next two years is all about winning races in Rio.” These were the words of Finn frontrunner Giles Scott after winning gold at the first Rio Olympic Test Event with a day to spare exactly one year ago.

Now as the British Sailing Team return to Guanabara Bay for the final ‘official’ warm up ahead of next year’s Games, the Brits will be as eager to lay down the gauntlet to their competitors that they will be the ones to beat in 2016.

There’s no mistaking the importance of the event in the sailors’ minds.

“It is in the venue at the right time of the year and the same schedule we expect at the Olympics so it is a dry run for the organisers but also for the sailors,” admits London 2012 470 silver medalist, Saskia Clark.

“It’s the first event where you really get that Olympic vibe and realise this is something different because the Olympics is something really special.”

RIO REGATTA

The Aquece Rio International Regatta, from 15 - 22 August, is sailing’s second official Test Event and will see 15 Brits compete against their international rivals across 10 Olympic classes in a key dress rehearsal at the 2016 venue.

With one boat per nation, per class permitted to enter, the regatta replicates Olympic-style racing where the Games will be hosted, and traditionally the sailing Test Events do provide a good indicator to form in the Olympic venue.

Ahead of London 2012, for example, Ben Ainslie (Finn gold), Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark (470 silver), Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson (Star silver) and Nick Dempsey (RS:X windsurfing silver) all won

the same colour medal at the 2011 Test Event as they did at the main event 12 months on.

Additionally, the British sailors in only 2 of the 10 classes – men’s 470 and women’s Laser Radial – differed from the 2011 Test Event and the Olympics.

Stuart Bithell won silver with Luke Patience in the 470 at London, but now sails the 49er with John Pink. He said: “We’ve had our eye on the end target, which is a medal in Rio 2016, for a couple of years now.

“We set out building blocks on the way and performing at ISAF World Cup Weymouth and Portland was one of them and getting selected for the Test Event was one of them so arguably everything’s going to plan, which is brilliant.”

SELECTIONS MADE

The British Test Event selections were announced after ISAF Sailing World Cup Weymouth and Portland in June.

Here Britain’s sailors picked up six

medals in five of the Olympic classes, including golds for Scott, Mills and Clark and Dempsey. In addition, Britain’s Paralympic sailors claimed a further five medals, including gold for London 2012 2.4mR champion Helena Lucas and Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell, who won 2012 bronze.

There’s no official Paralympic Test Event currently scheduled but the pressure is already off for Lucas who was named as the first member of the Great Britain team in any sport for Rio 2016 in April (see All at Sea July 2015). Sailors in the other two Paralympic classes, SKUD and Sonar, continue to battle it out to get the final nod for Brazil.

While the 2011 Test Event team comprised more sailors who had been to previous Games – 10 Olympians compared to 6 newcomers – the trend this year is reversed. With selections for the Laser and RS:X women still to come, 7 of the current Test team haven’t been to a Games before, compared to 6 that have.

One of the unique things about Test Events is not only do they provide sailors with the chance to further familiarise themselves with the venue and racing format and lay down a marker to their rivals, it is also one of the only times they will experience the dynamic of being part of such a small team.

WORKING TOGETHER

The 2014 Rio Test Event certainly produced some good omens, with the Brits medalling in 8 of the 10 Olympic classes.

Laser Radial sailor Ali Young was one of these, winning silver. She believes Rio has the potential to be one of the great Olympic sailing venues.

“Rio’s a fantastic venue, there’s a huge variety of conditions,” she explained.

“You have got swell outside of the bay, choppier in the harbour; you have got tide, topographic effects; I think it is a fascinating place to sail. I am looking forward to any challenge the venue throws at us.”

As Team Manager Stephen ‘Sparky’ Park concludes: “It is going to be important for all of our sailors and support staff to really get stuck in and to learn from the opportunity this year’s Test Event offers, recognizing we’ve still got a further 12 months to be able to step the game up a little bit more and put those lessons into practice for the Games itself.”

The British team has always had a reputation for its close-knit, supportive nature and it is at these events it is carefully fostered and honed to ensure that come the Big One the sailors feel comfortable, relaxed and supported to perform at their peak.

Team veteran Dempsey, a silver and bronze Olympic medalist aiming for his fifth Games at Rio, knows how invaluable that ‘bubble’ is.

“It’s the only time in the whole Olympic cycle the team becomes so small, with just 15 sailors,” he explains. “From my past experiences once you get that really small team, the team comes together a little bit more to bond a little bit better.”

For first-timers like Nacra 17 pair Hannah Diamond and John Gimson it cannot come quickly enough. The partners only teamed up in October 2014, but between them have a Worlds silver medal and a bronze from last year’s Test Event. Getting the chance to shine in Rio a year out from the Games is huge.

Diamond said: “We’ve both had a tough 6 months; we’ve worked really, really hard to get to the level we need to get to, so the feeling of being selected is all that

USING MOBILE DEVICES AT SEA

GoinG moBiLe Paul Cuss, from marine logbook app WaveTrax, explains how a mobile device can enhance your boating experience.

Personal mobile devices, with their increasing number of apps, can now replicate much of the navigation, mapping and tracking functionality that until recently you could only get with a complicated on-board device. The technologies of cellular data and Wi-Fi mean that being tied to the chart table down below every time you need to perform a simple task at sea is no longer the case. apps are increasingly taking advantage of not just their own built-in technologies, but in future they will integrate in a more connected way with the boat’s own systems, increasing the range of what you can do with an app whilst out on the water.

navigation apps mean that passage planning and navigation en-route can now be done from a tablet and journeys shared between the boat systems and the device itself. simple and useful apps that help sailors with training, learning knots, navigation aids, flags and so on, are very accessible and there are many specialist apps for tasks such as weather forecasting, finding marinas, aIs, racing and the recently-launched WaveTrax app for making a comprehensive marine logbook.

Here are some tips for using your mobile device at sea: 1. Battery Life: take aLL necessary steps to conserve power and reduce Battery drain. navigation using GPs and cellular data is a drain on the device’s battery reserves. For most coastal trips and short passages a full charge will be enough for use of most apps, but the following measures will help maintain the charge level: only use your device when you have to, do not keep the app on ‘display’ all the time, shut down non-essential apps, dim your screen, keep

tasks to a minimum, connect to a suitable charger whenever you can, use battery life extender units and use a good solar charger where possible and safe.

2) Gps reception: consider a BLuetooth Gps receiver on the water, a good GPs signal is normally found when your device is receiving a good cellular signal from your network operator or roaming provider.

When out of reach of a cellular signal, the Wi-Fi and cellular models will eventually make a reasonable to good GPs fix. all models can also connect via Bluetooth to a Bluetooth GPs receiver such as the Dual XGPs150. For minimal outlay, this offers increased choice when looking to obtain a good GPs signal.

3) ceLLuLar service offshore: rememBer that the ceLLuLar siGnaL wiLL fade further from Land Cellular coverage will weaken faster in coastal areas where there is poor coverage even on land. However, in most locations you could expect to pick up a cellular signal offshore until about 5 – 10km out to sea. It is a good idea to make a cache (stored map) of the area you are planning to be in as, for apps that do not store maps in the device memory, you will eventually lose map visibility. When outside of cellular coverage, apps which sync data back to a server will only sync

back the saved data when the device is receiving a 3G/4G signal or is connected to Wi-Fi and the Internet.

4) compLementary tooL: do not reLy on apps as suBstitutes for the primary on-Board systems although tablets and smartphones are fast becoming a standard part of the boater’s toolkit, they are complementary in nature and must not be substitutes for the primary navigation, weather, radar and other communications systems on board. By virtue of their primary task of being a communications device, however, they should always be present as safety coverage in the event primary boating systems become immobilised.

5) personaL safety: do not aLLow the use of any moBiLe device to interfere with safety on Board In difficult conditions or heavy seas, it is better not to be distracted by continually using your mobile device. If heading into rough weather, place your device in a safe and dry place, such as the cabin, where it can still receive a reasonable GPs signal and power.

6) damaGe or Loss: protect your moBiLe device when at sea Taking an expensive device on the water is always a risk for damage or loss so consider appropriate insurance. In any event protect your device by use of a waterproof pouch.

Lizzy, 24, has been sailing since she was three and hopes to one day compete in the Vendée Globe. This autumn she takes part in the solo transatlantic yacht race, the Mini Transat.

TAKING ON THE MINI TRANSAT

HIGH TEA ON THE HIGH SEAS With just over a month to go until the start of the Mini Transat, Lizzy is already packing her picnic bag.

GOOD nutrition plays a huge part in race performance. Without it sailors lack energy, concentration and motivation, which are all vital to staying competitive and safe while offshore.

It is quite common for competitors to lose between 3 and 5kg during the Mini Transat race. This is most probably due to a monotonous diet, harsh weather conditions and budgets limiting the skippers to packets of instant noodles, which do not quite cut it on the nutritional front.

I plan to eat up to 3000 calories a day, depending on the conditions while offshore.

This will mean eating four main meals roughly every six hours (breakfast, lunch, dinner and midnight) with various snacks in between.

SPORTS KITCHEN I have chosen to take a number of Sports Kitchen ‘QSM’ meals. Between 300 to 350 calories, these meals have a 1:1 ratio of carbohydrate to protein and come pre-

packaged in a plastic pot (fork included).

Only boiling water and 5 minutes of patience is required, resulting in a delicious meal. The flavours vary between chicken, chilli and beef on a rice or pasta base, and can be followed with a guilt free rice pudding dessert.

Breakfast wise, I am a huge instant porridge fan; Sport Kitchen also do a fantastic selection with banana, chocolate or raisins, or a fruit berry muesli.

When a more hearty meal is required (generally in the evening before the night sets in), I will be eating my way through a number of Expedition Foods ‘wet’ meals. With a higher calorie count (450 plus), these meals come in foil pouches that are left to heat up in boiling water.

These are quicker to cook than rehydrated meals and are a little easier on the stomach. I favour the potato based meals that come with either fish or scrambled egg.

PERFECT SNACKS With regard to snacks, I prefer to take items with more protein or fruit. Ration type foods tend to be very carbohydrate based (to supply enough energy), but after a number of days these can get a little hard, and boring, to digest.

Babybel cheese, tinned tuna, Peperami sticks, apricots and custard desserts are all going to be stashed away on the boat; washed down with a strong mug of Dorset Tea. When I need an instant energy boost, I will be tucking into a Bounce Energy Ball – at 200 calories these little protein balls pack a punch.

With my food all ordered, I am now sailing back to France from Newlyn, Cornwall. I made a short pit stop following the JP Morgan Asset Management Round The Island Race to finalise the designs for my Transat race sails. I will soon be back to get them stitched together.

BRITISH SAILING TEAM FOLLOWING THE BRITISH TEAM ON THE ROAD TO RIO

On top of the world!

In this month’s British Sailing Team column, Laser star Nick Thompson expresses his joy and relief at finally winning the World Championship title.

After four previous Laser World Championship medals, I have finally got the colour I wanted and am over the moon to be able to call myself World Champion!

I feel like this win has been such a long time coming. I’ve come so close before with bronze medals in 2009 and 2014, and silvers in 2010 and 2011 – but the gold had continued to pass me by. to finally win the Worlds – and do it the year before the Olympics when it really matters – is just fantastic, and I will be heading to this month’s rio test event confident that all the hard work is on the right track and starting to pay off as we head into the final year’s countdown to the Games.

I have been close to winning a few events recently. I so nearly won the Miami World Cup, but broke some kit and that cost me that event. I came close again at the Hyeres World Cup but did not quite do it there in the medal race.

I was starting to question a little bit whether I could win one. But at the Worlds, held at the 1976 Olympic venue in Kingston, Canada, I kept digging away and kept sailing each race as it came and did not really worry about the end result at all, until the penultimate night when I was a little bit stressed about it. I did not sleep very well that night, but it all came good, in spite of a three-race final day in difficult offshore conditions.

TEAM SELECTION Straight after the World Championship I had confirmation of my selection to represent the British Sailing team at the Olympic test event in rio, which is where I am now. Although I was not surprised to get the nod given my recent form, it is never an easy road. the younger British guys are improving all the time and Lorenzo Chiavarini in particular

has had two solid World Championship results back to back now, finishing 10th this year and 11th in 2014. Nothing is a foregone conclusion as far as selection is concerned, and there is no room for complacency. this is now my sixth trip out to rio, which is quite impressive given how far away it is and how tricky it is to get out there and get

quality training. the main thing I am looking forward to is getting some proper, solid, competitive racing on the Olympic waters.

We have had a few regattas in rio now, but apart from the ‘test’ test event in 2014, there has not been anything that has been a really similar test to the Olympics itself, so that is really what I am looking forward to.

the focus and I will be trying to get fired up for this event as if it is the Games. With just one boat selected in each of the ten classes, I think this year’s test event will really start to have that Olympic vibe about it and I know we are all looking forward to learning more about what it takes to win in this intriguing and challenging venue

PRACTICE RUN As a team I think we are doing a great job of trying to treat this as an Olympics. We will be spending a similar amount of time out in rio with a similar build up to it as if it were the Games. Obviously I have not been selected for the Games itself yet, but I think it is a good idea to do a practice run as if it were the case.

So I am going to try and build up to it as I would an Olympics. that has obviously been tricky with the Worlds being quite close to this test event, but for now rio is

BOATING PEOPLE Q&A WITH PETER THORNTON, SKIPPER IN THE 2015-16 CLIPPER ROUND THE WORLD RACE BEFORE THE CLIPPER RACE, WHAT OTHER EVENTS HAVE YOU TAKEN PART IN?

WHEN DID YOU FIRST GET INTO SAILING?

Other than searching for giant congers using dinghies with the mighty Gorran and Mevagissey Sea Scouts, it was really when my father took me ‘propa’ yacht sailing for my 14th birthday in the middle of the Baltic Sea (although apparently it was not quite the middle, more like ‘just off Denmark’).

Around my shipping career, I have participated in hard fought Solent racing series on Sigma 33s and Beneteau First 40.7s. This is in addition to Cowes Weeks, Round the Islands and Taittinger’s Cups on HOD 35s and Beneteau First 40s. Plymouth, Fowey and Falmouth have also featured heavily in my racing development on yachts and keel boats such as a great Ballad 30, a J24, a Projection 7.62 and a Melges 30. I have also particularly enjoy racing with the Falmouth Working Boat Fleet, which is something I want to continue for as long as I can. Outside the UK I have skippered and taught racing on 40.7s and a Macintyre 55 on the eastern Australian coast including two Sydney to Hobart Races.

I took a risk and arranged to sign off my previous yacht, flying from San Diego to London hoping to be successful at interview. Two days later I found myself in rainy Gosport in front of the Race Director. Before I knew it, the following day I was on the water starting my three day skipper trial and in midFebruary the email arrived to say I had been selected as one of the 2015-16 Clipper Round the World Race skippers.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO START RACING COMPETITIVELY?

WHAT WILL THE ROLE OF SKIPPER INVOLVE?

Going to sea as an 18-year-old Deck Officer in the Royal Fleet Auxiliary I experienced navigating the world’s oceans, which in turn fuelled my interest and desire to apply that knowledge to the art of sailing yachts.

HOW DID YOU GET TO BE A SKIPPER IN THE CLIPPER RACE?

My role is to lead everyone in my team, both afloat and ashore to enable them to have the most amazing experience of their lives, ‘so far’! They want to learn to sail and race at the same time, so that is what I plan to give them.

TELL US WHAT IT WILL BE LIKE TAKING PART IN THE CLIPPER ROUND THE WORLD YACHT RACE. That’s simple to answer, it will be like nothing else matters.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WANTING TO FOLLOW IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS?

Have a plan. Qualifications open doors, which in turn enable you to discover other incredible adventures that people will need help with. Ask questions of the ‘old sea dogs’ and never be pretentious.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT SAILING?

Standing at the stern, holding a steaming mug of proper coffee at first light with sails set and the boat stomping through the water at full speed in the right direction.

DO YOU HAVE ANY AMBITIONS YOU STILL WANT TO FULFILL?

Sail in the Arctic Ocean – it is the only ocean that I am yet to sail in either on a ship or sailing yacht. Oh and round the horn under sail.

WHAT’S THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR?

Too many to label just one, but let’s say it is the look of the crews’ faces after we were out in that late SW storm that blew through early May while we were riding it up the channel putting one of the 70s through her paces, surfing regularly at 20kts+ during a level 3 training session.

Learning how to handle a vessel in challenging conditions is a core part of any powerboat or RIB driver’s progression. Yet keeping the boat as safe as possible when stopped in the water is critical.

BUOYANCY AND STABILITY

Understanding your boat’s buoyancy and stability is essential in understanding the risks of a given situation.

When a boat is at rest and its Centre of Buoyancy is acting directly through its Centre of Gravity it is stable. When it heels, the CoG remains the same but the CoB moves. The offset between the two creates a ‘righting force’ or ‘lever’, which returns the vessel upright and maintains stability.

However if the boat heels to the extent that the CoG and CoB move but are in line, there is no righting force, putting the boat at risk of capsize. This is called the Angle of Vanishing Stability.

The build-up of water in the bilges and on deck that is unable to drain rapidly can have a devastating effect on stability, as can the movement of people around a boat or heavy objects that have not been safely secured. If any additional weight moves the CoG to the point where the AVS is reached, a vessel is at a great risk of capsize.

STABILITY AWARENESS

When loading up kit and passengers on your boat, think about how to maintain a stable profile in the water. An outboard engine will present a significant weight on the transom, so considering where other essential kit should be stored is important. Think carefully about where to place any heavy equipment in order to try and even out the weight distribution, keeping heavy objects close to the deck level.

DANGERS WHEN STATIONARY

Broaching can occur when wave speed exceeds vessel speed. The wave lifts the stern and turns the boat broadside to the waves, increasing the risk of waves coming over the beam. If a boat isn’t moving any waves, therefore, pose a potential hazard.

It is the distance between waves that is most important here in terms of how much a boat is able to ‘right’ itself before the next wave hits and exacerbates the problem.

The ability to clear water rapidly from decks through elephant’s trunks, open transoms, bilge pumps and bailing is essential. However, boat modifications, engine position and human behaviour all have an impact on a boat’s stability.

Outboard engine shafts vary in length and it is not uncommon for people to buy a new boat but keep the same engine

only to find when the engine is attached the leg does not sit low enough in the water and so they cut a bit out of the transom. When the boat is moving ahead, water won’t come in. But once stopped the lower the transom, the higher the risk.

Be mindful that bathing platforms with doors at the back of the boat can provide an area of vulnerability should it be left open at sea.

BALANCING ACT

Having an understanding of the particular characteristics of the boat you are driving, how it handles and the basic principles of stability can go a long way in avoiding a capsize.

If you rush to the back of the boat to address a stall, and you have passengers onboard, get them to safely move further forwards. Or if you are part of a safety team, always consider when someone is being rescued, some of the crew remain on the opposite side to keep the boat as flat as possible, to mitigate the free surface effect of any trapped water.

Solent based dinghy sailor david henshall is now a well known writer and speaker on topics covering the rich heritage of all aspects of lesiure boating. even in Portsmouth, where the wider maritime heritage surely has its heartland, the growth in numbers is plateauing and, more worryingly, showing the first signs of downturn.

However, move away from the high profile centres such as the Mary Rose and HMS Victory and the environment is far harsher. Look at the nearby Portsmouth and Southsea Castle museums which have suffered a 20 per cent loss in visitor numbers.

However, in theory at least, the history of sailing should be safe, thanks to the designated National Maritime Museum, but this is located down in the far South West of england at Falmouth. This sounds reassuring, but rather than the classic museum mind-set of ‘protect and preserve’, Falmouth is first and foremost a tourist attraction. The title ‘maritime museum’ is taken fairly loosely, with

The media spotlight that has recently been focused on the sport of sailing, thanks to the prospect of a competitive bid for the America’s Cup, is a timely reminder of the enduring sail boat racing heritage that exists in the UK. We may never have won the ‘Auld Mug’ – the slightly irreverent name for the America’s Cup - but sailors from the UK have won just about everything else in sailing that could be considered worth winning. Nor is this incredible record of success only expressed out on the race course, for the UK has been one of the greatest powerhouses in terms of design and innovation.

For more than a century now, Great Britain has exported sailing expertise and excellence out across the world, though as with football, cricket and rugby, all too often we have subsequently been overtaken by younger and more agile nations.

This is very much an issue ‘now’, as so many of the sailors, sail makers, boat builders and designers who were at the vanguard of that world beating crusade are elderly. Sadly, many of their stories have already been lost, leaving unfillable voids in the narrative of just how so many of the developments in the sport took place.

It is not just their stories, but the pictures and artefacts that can tell so much, a great example of which is where one of the great innovators of the day has a comprehensive filling system that contains so much forgotten detail.

PRESERVING HISTORY Yet the richness of this heritage faces a very real risk of lacking a fairy tale ending, as a number of pressures suggest that the ‘history is bunk’ mind-

set is increasingly prevalent. Where heritage is being preserved, in the many museums that are such a part of UK life, the numbers of people coming in through the doors is showing a worrying downward trend.

A £12m outlay for the BAR HQ is just the starting point for a high profile, but also high cost America’s Cup campaign. A very small percentage of that outlay would go a long way to preserving the heritage of the UK sailing scene

their remit being pretty much anything to do with boats, rather than on any particular focus on the UK’s sailing heritage.

Although heavily funded by Lottery money, Falmouth also recognises the need to generate income. It is to be expected that, along with every other public service, the heritage sector will face cuts in financial support from central government funds.

With the existing museum structure facing the issue of fewer visitors at the same time that their funding is being slashed, a sailing museum that would become the focal point for the history of sailing is a big ask; little wonder then that the story of sailing could sink without trace.

THE BIG MONEY Yet, at the same time where life is getting so hard, a waterfall of money is pouring into the a few selected elite pinnacles of the sport. The Portsmouth based headquarters of Ben Ainslie Racing are a testament to how, with the right backing, substantial sums of money can get targeted into the sport.

The Team GBR Olympic squad want for nothing in the search for more Great Britain golds, with the youth squads (there are lots of them) being equally well supported.

And yet, even if our sailors return from Rio with a sackful of medals, an achievement that is then trumped by Team BAR defying the odds and winning the America’s Cup out in Bermuda, the value of these amazing results will be cheapened if we cannot show that British success is far from being a flash in the pan, but the culmination of over 150 years of history.

Cowes Week racing

WE followed the glorious Js into Cowes as they entered the Solent to dip their formidable masts to the Royal Yacht Squadron in its Bicentenary Year.

I came via the jolly Red Jet, passing Elenaora as we docked and reveled in the news that five Js will be seen racing here this summer.

Many of you will have your favourite haunts in Cowes, built up over years of fun, and I am not going to begin to rate the many yacht clubs in Cowes but just list the Best Bites top mouthfuls.

This should be Hop’s heaven as I love a good bakery and to enjoy a decent coffee (they import Noble Bean) whilst sampling their Vienoisserie should be my Nirvana - but it seemed hot and bothered, and I did not linger as I had not reached my second favourite yet.

MESS CANTEEN

TOP FAVOURITES

Coast Bar and the Mess Canteen: I started at Coast Bar, passing a busy Tiffins on the way as I wanted to see how many people were eating breakfast at 10.30 in the morning - the lucky skivers!

I was not disappointed; two families, a couple of single gents checking the papers and a table of French yachtsmen filled the charming open room with its long bar, fresh flowers and open brickwork that holds a huge blackboard with the breakfast specials marked up an impressive list.

Breakfast is an important meal, but in Cowes it could well be the yard stick you are measured by, that grinding and spinny flying being hungry work.

The Coast Full English at £6.95 is top dog here with good local bacon and sausage, mushrooms plus black pudding.

Eggs Benedict at £6.50 and eggs anyhow on toast at £4.95, toast and jam £2.50.

Jam is by Tiptree and the coffee by Hampshire based Mozzo.

It has a delightful ambience and a helpful, friendly team. I will be back to check out the wood fired pizza oven and to see the lunch specials - these guys get through a lot of chalk!

Above Coast Bar is one of Cowes’ favourite Italians, Tonino’s. It is traditional and reliable, but we did not want to go there. Instead we passed Tiffins again, with more people on the terrace enjoying their Lavazza and bacon baguettes. I noted they do crew hampers. On a mission I passed the Well Bread Company. Attractive, large

Mess Canteen is a welcoming tunnel of a café with cosy seating in the snug at the back and a convivial team smiling at the counter. Blackboards abound here too, and as the specials run out they get wiped out. There are no microwaves used here, just stuff cooked fresh and when it is gone, it is gone. Local producers are listed and tea and coffee is from Clifton.

The girls in the AAM Cowes Week Office love this place, and I see Matt & Cat’s bright green sticker on the window for further reassurance.

Best Bites here include the tempura soft shell crab burger (when they can catch the little nippers), the fish cakes and for a quick lunch the Croque Madame.

Iced coffee and I am happy here.

MOOCOW

I needed to visit Moocow, just off the main drag and with its own Greek Island style bright white sparkle, a sunny terrace and all shiny orange, super clean calm inside. I wanted to try the vegetable tempura here as I have heard it is fab, but in a moment of terrible judgement I went for the aubergine and halloumi stack.

It looked fantastic, but sadly tasted of very little and the generous slices of cheese were too thick to crisp at the edges, so made for some energetic chewing. A shame, but my fault probably; it was just too healthy for me and I looked longingly at the calamari and baked fish in paper. I am going to go back with a small gang of grazers and work through the menu as it all reads and looks a dream.

Note: Ladies Night 13 August, DJ and cocktails on the terrace, but closed 14 and 15 – it is great for private functions.

BACK TO COAST

On my re-visit to the Coast Bar, the place was full with both rooms buzzing and the terrace full. Happy eaters and drinkers, the pizza oven was delivering beautifully charred bottoms in minutes.

Best Bites choice pizza comes with garlic & thyme slow roast mushrooms, prosciutto cotto and mascarpone, followed by lemon posset. Other favourites are the pan fried sea bass and the meatballs were flying out of the kitchen too. There is a good wine list; the Chablis on the blackboard was perfect.

Breaking news: Harbour Kitchen has just opened next to the Food Hamper, the second string to the Coast Bar. They will serve less formal, faster street food.

The marina can accommodate small super yachts up to 50m long. There are 260 fully serviced berths. The berths are on finger/floating pontoons.

There is a 30 ton hoist, a 15 ton mobile crane and a two ton Hiab crane.

In terms of facilities, the marina has toilets, showers and laundry.

The many commercial tenants within the marina include chandlery, leisure clothing, hairdressers, boat sales, sail repair service, engineers and electricians.

The nearest chandler is Fynn Marine (www. fynnmarine.co.uk) and they are on-site. They offer a range of products including International Paints at Internet prices. You can also buy cold drinks and ice creams during the summer.

There is a wealth of food and drink options here, many of which are more than happy to prepare packed lunches and ready meals for hungry sailors.

The nearest supermarket is Sainsbury’s, which is on the High Street behind the marina. A new Marks and Spencer’s Simply Food is due to open in time for

Cowes Week. This will be a two minute walk from the marina.

The marina office can also provide ice for scorching summer days, any toiletries you might have forgotten and can even provide power leads if you need one out of hours.

DESTINATIONS

Yarmouth, Poole and Lymington are easily accessible to the west and going east Chichester and Portsmouth Harbour are popular.

The marina has recently joined the TransEurope Association so members can not only use their membership at Cowes Yacht Haven, but also voyages to Royal Clarence in Portsmouth Harbour and Birdham Pool in Chichester Harbour.

Cherbourg, the Channel Islands and the West Country can easily be accessed within a week.

Beaucette Marina in Guernsey is a part of the TransEurope Association too, so annual berth holders can get up to 50 per cent off their berthing rates there.

ACCESS

The marina is accessed from Cowes High Street. It is next to the Red Funnel Red Jet terminal, which provides a high speed ferry service between Southampton and Cowes for any visitors from the mainland.

The Isle of Wight is situated off the south coast of England and is separated from the mainland by the

Solent. The Solent can be entered from the west via the Needles Channel and the North Channel and from the East via many channels near Nab Tower.

The construction of a breakwater has caused certain changes to tidal flows within Cowes Harbour.

Visitors should check www. cowesharbourcomission.co.uk for the

latest observed changes to the tidal system. The Solent is a busy shipping lane and there are frequent ferries on approach to Cowes Yacht Haven.

Bramble Bank should also be noted.

All approaching yachts should maintain a listening watch on the harbour channel 69 for commercial movements. Visitors should also call the marina on VHF channel 80.

DEVELOPMENT

During the 1970s visiting boats would moor in the harbour mouth, up the Medina river and along Cowes Green.

A working boatyard, Groves and Gutteridge, set on the site of what is now Cowes Yacht Haven, was under pressure to provide berthing and lifting and repair services to all the visiting boats and eventually started to form what looks like the modern day marina.

Esta Cooper: “I just wanted to send you an official thanks for your support for this year’s J-Cup which was an extremely enjoyable and successful event. Without the use of the Cowes Yacht Haven we really could not run the event. We had great feedback from a number of our competitors who thoroughly enjoyed themselves, with the convenient location of the Yacht Haven being within a few minutes walk to town and the Island Sailing Club and of course winning the prizes at the end of the regatta.”

The Cowes Waterfront Trust bought the marina in 1993 and it became Cowes Yacht Haven.

Since the early 1990s the marina has undergone a considerable facelift.

The Trust installed the iconic front of the marina’s offices, and in 2001 a £2.1 million facelift saw significant redevelopment of the North Basin, installation of 3,000 sq/m of hard standing and upgrading of the mooring facilities.

HISTORY

Cowes Week has played a key part in the British sporting summer calendar since 1826. Outside of Cowes Week, the Solent is hugely popular with cruisers and racers alike.

The Royal Yacht Squadron, founded in 1815, is one of the most prestigious and exclusive yacht clubs in the world. It can be found just around the corner from Cowes Yacht Haven in Cowes Castle.

ATTRACTIONS

Not far from Cowes you can find historical attractions such as Osborne House, beach and gardens, the magnificent country retreat of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, and the well-preserved Carisbrooke Castle, which dates back to the 12th century.

The Isle of Wight is also famous for its stunning and sometimes dramatic coastline, with Compton Bay recently being voted one of the top 50 beaches in the world by Sunday Times Travel. The Needles at Alum Bay is also a quintessential Isle of Wight site.

LOCAL TRANSPORT

Cowes enjoys fantastic transport links to the rest of the island. Buses

run every 10 minutes from just outside the marina to Newport, where you can catch a connecting bus to near enough every corner of the island. The Isle of Wight is best known for its cycle network, gaining it the title of ‘Cycle Island’. Car and bike hire is available close to the marina at Top Gear.

When abroad, sailing or land-born, always try a local rosé to build up some benchmarks for your taste palate. Many of the local vineyards close to the Mediterranean Côtes d’Azur coastline make rosés to meet domestic holiday demand.

On one trip travelling by road to sail a St Tropez regatta, we stopped a few miles inland at the Campaux winery. Their rosé is a stunner. Once found, we noticed it on many local wine lists but none is exported, not even within France.

Colour is a good starting point. Generally the paler the colour the better and dryer the wine will be and the delicate pink lighter rosés are good on their own as an apéritif.

A good way to make your choice is to follow the grape varieties the wine is made from. Rosés use the same core range that well known reds or whites use. If you have a favourite red or white, a rosé from the same grapes may well suit you.

From Italy, the aptly named Italia brand range is a reliable, moderately priced brand quite widely available. They offer a straightforward Pinot Grigio Rosé, a gentle summer-time wine 11.5 per cent at £5.59 a bottle.

If you like Spanish Rioja, try Muga rosé. A robust 13.5 per cent, it uses the classic Rioja varietals, Tempranillo, Garnacha and Viura grapes, producing a full-bodied wine good for barbecues rather than as an apéritif. The price of £9.99 a bottle puts it in a higher price range but this is more of a sipper to savour rather than a quaffer.

Here are a few I ran past my tasting panel.

From France, Esprit de Buganay is a good example of the blending of local Côtes de Provence grapes, picked in the early morning before the day heats up. A blend of the traditional provençal grapes Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah, plus in this case a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon for flavour reasons. Pale pink, fresh with cherry fruity aroma and a respectable 13 per cent abv at about £8.24 per 75cl bottle at Waitrose.

IT is sailing regatta season and bottles of pale pink rosé in a cooler on the club terrace or deck are a common enough sight. The third colour choice is often available at a party or barbecue too.

Time was that rosé did not have a popular following in Britain with only a couple of brands the norm on supermarket shelves. Last month I counted no fewer than 33 different rosés from all the main wine-making countries occupying a whole four-tier shelf run at my local Waitrose.

Rosé, it seems, has become a summer wine of significant volume so how to select the one that suits you?

Prosecco fizz has already enjoyed its own surge in popularity. Enthusiasts should also try Prosecco Rosé Italian San Leo Rosata, 11 per cent and very reasonably priced at £7.79 per bottle.

For Spanish fizz, Cava long-since established its credentials in the UK as an acceptable (even preferred) reasonably priced sparkling alternative.

Codorniu make a rosé version from the same traditional cava grape varieties, principally Macabeu and Parellada. Very reasonably price at £7.86 for the 75cl bottle, 11.5 per cent and made according to the traditional method with the second fermentation producing the bubbles in the bottle. Dropping a fresh cherry in each glass adds to the summer party atmosphere.
