HER Majesty the Queen named Cunard’s new cruise liner Queen Elizabeth – the third Cunard ship to bear the name – at a glittering ceremony in Southampton. The naming marked another a milestone in British maritime history

as the £400 million ocean giant prepared to set sail on her maiden voyage to Madeira. The 92,400-ton vessel took two years to build at the Fincantieri Monfalcone shipyard in Italy but bookings for her maiden voyage sold out in just 29 minutes. She was greeted by a fleet of small boats and crowds lining the shore as she headed up the Solent into Southampton Water before dawn under the command of Captain Christopher Wells. Tugs saluted the new ship with

water fountains as she berthed at the Ocean Terminal. The ship will carry 2,000 passengers in oppulent art deco surroundings with exotic wood panelling, crystal chandeliers, handmade carpets and original artworks. A proud new ship THERE is something very special, and very British, about a new queen sailing sedately across the oceans. Times have certainly changed since a young Princess Elizabeth helped her mother launch the first Queen Elizabeth on the Clyde in 1938. In those days ships were named and blessed before they touched the water. Maiden voyages came much later after years of fitting out. The new Queen Elizabeth took just two years to build but little was changed with the welcome when she steamed up the Solent and Southampton water though the dawn mist after her passage across the Mediterranean and the Bay of Biscay. With her 16 decks and sumptuous interior harking back to another age of Empire she is a mixture of old fashioned pride and modern day affluence. At 964 feet long and 186 feet from waterline to funnel, she has a top speed of more than 23 knots. Despite continuing worries about the economy her arrival at Southampton and her first departure with paying passengers for southern sun reflected quiet but growing confidence, matching the green shoots that were apparent last month just along the waterfront at the boat show.

Now 40-something voyagers with young families are just as likely to be looking for full-on activity holidays with gourmet dining and top class entertainment on top. There have been plenty of new launches of spectacular ships that can be equally at home in northern

THOUSANDS of spectators are set to pack La Rochelle for the start of sailing’s ultimate solo challenge on October 17. A fleet of international ocean racers sailing high performance Eco 60 yachts are due to blast over the startline of the gruelling 30,000mile the VELUX 5 OCEANS solo marathon around the world race. Hundreds of spectator boats were expected to take to the water in the specially designated spectator area in the Pertuis Charentais outside La Rochelle’s iconic harbour walls. The starting gun is planned for 4pm and the eight ocean racers will pass the start boat, the beautiful

three-masted tall ship Belem, and embark on their epic adventure around the world alone. The first of five ocean sprints will see them battle the notorious Bay of Biscay before taking on the Doldrums and the South Atlantic en route to Cape Town, South Africa. We have the Queen Victoria and the huge Queen Mary 2 but there is nothing quite the same as a new queen proudly carrying the name of the reigning monarch. Three cheers. Run by Clipper Ventures the race is the longest running solo round the world race with 28 years of heritage as the BOC Challenge and then the Around Alone. More than 500 people have been into space – fewer than 180 have sailed round the world solo. This year marks 41 years since Sir Robin Knox-Johnston’s historic solo and non-stop circumnavigation in 1969. After setting off on October 17 from La Rochelle to Cape Town, the race will then take in Wellington in New Zealand, Salvador in Brazil and Charleston in the US before returning back across the Atlantic to France.

NEWS IN BRIEF Museum funding FUNDING of £108,000 has been given by the Heritage Lottery Fund to create new exhibitions on the Royal Navy in the 20th and 21st centuries at the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth. The grant means the museum has up to two years to submit more detailed plans and apply for the £1.1 million support they are seeking for their £4.2 million project to quadruple exhibition space by 2014.

By Sam Feasey HEIGHTS of Abraham and Grandstand Motor Sports became the inaugural Powerboat P1 SuperStock Champions at the Lymington Grand Prix of the Sea. Rupert Pugh and Dan Whapples finished second in the afternoon’s 300 Class race and rival Maurice Lacroix fifth, as Heights of Abraham powered to its maiden SuperStock Championship trophy with an overall points total of 211. After winning eight of the previous nine races, the Matlock-based team started the weekend with a 36-point cushion at the top of the standings and Saturday morning’s race cancellation ensured the UK powerboating gold would be travelling back up the M1 to the Midlands. Heights of Abraham’s delighted driver, Rupert Pugh, said: “We’re over the moon. It’s been a huge effort from the team and we’re already looking forward to coming back next year and retaining our trophy. “We’ve built up a lot of confidence between driver and navigator. It’s a tremendous privilege to be part of a championshipwinning racing team.” Double Six Racing duo Brian Caudwell and Neil Cadman took the bronze medal behind Messrs Pugh and Whapples.

Rough Cut Racing stole in to claim the final Maurice Lacroix Chronograph Valgranges prize after a timing penalty denied the boys in blue from clocking up their fourth timepiece of the season. John Wilson and Neil Scarborough’s triumph was secured despite the 150 Class frontrunners not finishing the weekend’s feature race. Grandstand Motor Sports came off second best in a nasty collision with surprise pacesetter, Aztec Racing. Jubilant Grandstand Motor Sports driver, Wilson, reflected on a sensational year for the 150 Class: “It’s been an absolutely fantastic season and to become the first-ever SuperStock Champions is brilliant,” said the winning Warwickshire-based pilot. Team Fox maintained its runner-up position in the series after crossing the finishing line in fourth place and only edged Eclipse by a mere five points as Rose Lores and John Donnelly took second on Saturday ahead of Flying Sparks, who proudly scored back-to-back podium finishes to end the season. Not to be outshone, GSS Mermaid picked up its first-ever Grand Prix of the Sea trophy as David Hobson and fiancée Kirsty Clark raced to victory after a sensational tussle with Aztec Racing and Grandstand Motor Sports in Saturday’s fast and furious race action.

Trust launches Sail for Heroes voyages INJURED serving and ex-service men and women can get on board the Tall Ships Youth Trust’s fleet of 72-foot Challenger Yachts as part of the charity’s Sail for Heroes voyages. The voyages allow serving and ex-service men and women who have been injured during service to try sailing and take on new challenges, helping them to adjust back to life at home. Tall Ships Youth Trust worked with the British Limbless Ex Service Men’s Association to run its first Sail 4 Heroes voyage last month. Nine men aged 20-50 from around the UK joined the seven night voyage in Portsmouth and were taught how to sail the yacht around the Solent.

NEWS IN BRIEF Art on ice MARINE scientists and artists taking part in the 22 – day Cape Farewell expedition to the Norwegian Arctic were trapped in ice for 40 minutes as their skipper ordered them to prepare for rescue. The Norwegian Coast Guard was alerted to the ship’s position near Svalbard by the ship’s Iridium OpenPort, global maritime satellite communications service. A helicopter was dispatched to the emergency but the ice shifted to allow the ship to reach open water. The Cape Farewell expedition provided a chance for scientists and artists from around the globe to collaborate in the climate debate.

Life saver BROADCASTER Dennis Skillicorn believes his SeaSafe Sea Trekker gilet saved his life after he fell into the sea at Hythe Marina. The BBC Radio Solent presenter was thrown out of his rubber dinghy after jumping the last few feet as the marina lock emptied. ORGANISERS of the inaugural Royal Southern Academy’s Match Race Cup are confident of a strong turnout with plenty of sailing talent entering the new competition that starts in November. The Royal Southern Academy confirms that there has already been substantial interest from ISAF Open top 100 rankers and university teams to compete in the inaugural final in March next year. With 12 teams in each round, the first three entries received are from ISAF top 100 Open Match racers including Andy Shaw, new World Student Match Race Champion and Ali Hall. ISAF has confirmed the Royal Southern Academy Match Cup as a Grade 4 event. There will be two qualifier rounds on 20/21 November 2010 and 5/6 March 2011, with 12

places available for each qualifier. The top six teams from each round will qualify for a place in the finals to be held on 26/27 March. The Royal Southern Yacht Club’s Academy is for young people aged 18-25. They race Laser SB3s including Match Racing, and IRC, and offer special coaching sessions. The Academy charters SB3s from Pelican Racing for Academy racing events, and places young people as crew on IRC boats. The Sailing Programme, running until July 2011 is aimed and devised for young people who live in the region and also those who go to local universities. GIPSY Moth IV, in which Sir Francis Chichester set the then record for the fastest single-handed navigation of the globe in 1967, could leave UK shores after being put on sale for £250,000. The 53-foot wooden ketch is being sold by her owners, the Isle of Wight-based United Kingdom Sailing Academy, because they can no longer maintain the historic vessel. They restored Gipsy Moth IV to her original record-breaking condition at a cost of £300,000. Sir Francis, then 65, sailed 28,500 miles with only one stop. The voyage took nine months and one day.

Wright on target FINN world champion Ed Wright, 32, capped an impressive 2009-10 season by clinching a nomination for the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year award, recognised as the top award a sailor can achieve in world sailing. The awards are presented each November to one man and one woman. Wright won the 2008-09 ISAF world cup title last September and began the 2009-10 season with gold at the Rolex Miami Olympic classes regatta and the Princess Sofia Trophy in Palma. He claimed the overall world cup series title for the second year in a row.

Survey skills DELEGATES from as far as Turkey and Ireland attended a course on surveying wooden boats run by the Yacht Designers and Surveyors Association at Faversham Creek in Kent. The 25 delegates also saw wooden boats under repair including the wooden Thames sailing barge ‘The Cambria’ which is undergoing complete restoration. Star of the Great River Race THE traditional rowing wherry dinghy Maggie crewed by Weybridge Sailing Club members beat more than 300 entries to win the 2010 Great River Race. Sister boat Aggie owned and built by Weybridge member Roy Hathaway and crewed by WSC members finished third overall just 27 seconds behind Leaper, a fast racing Noamho Curragh boat from Ireland. Maggie won the overall handicap trophy, the fastest four-blade boat and the cup for the first Thames based entry. The 22nd running of the race last month was a rowing marathon over a 21-mile course from Greenwich to Richmond for traditional boats from dinghies to dragonboats, timehandicapped for a staggered start. The minimum requirement is four oars and four crew on board, rowers and passengers, and the boats have to be able to weather the often quite rough water of the tidal Thames. Maggie was rescued smoke blackened and blistered after being damaged in an arson attack on the club’s boat shed four years ago. She still took part in the 2006 race finishing second. This year, with a bit more restoration, she turned on the style to finish more than ten minutes ahead of Leaper, taking a shade under three hours with the tide but wit a fresh head win on several

RNLI launches up by two thirds FIGURES issued by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution show the charity’s lifeboats launched on average 42 times every day in June, July and August – an increase of 68 per cent on the annual daily average. The preliminary figures show that RNLI lifeboats were requested to launch by HM Coastguard 3,926 times during June, July and August while the charity’s lifeguards responded to 12,911 incidents - rescues, first aid, lost and found children - across 152 of the UK’s busiest beaches – a 16 per cent increase on the same period last year. The busiest RNLI lifeboat station overall was Tower on the River Thames, launching 179 times over the summer. The busiest RNLI coastal lifeboat stations were Poole, Dorset, with 79 launches, Southend-on-Sea, Essex, with 66 launches, followed

by Eastbourne, Sussex, where the volunteer lifeboat crews launched 56 times. The busiest beaches for RNLI lifeguards over the summer months were Perranporth Cornwall, recording 561 incidents, Bournemouth, East, Dorset where lifeguards dealt with 397 incidents, followed by Gwithian, Cornwall who handled 391. RNLI Operations Director, Michael Vlasto, said: “The summer is always busy as more and more people opt to relax at the coast each summer in the UK and Ireland. “The figures show that our volunteers are called on much more during this time and the fact they respond every time the pager goes off shows just how committed they are to saving lives at sea. “Many of our lifeboat volunteers are also particularly busy at this time FOR the first time, more than 3,000 boat owners are now members of the Westerly Owners’ Association, making them the biggest yacht owning group in the world. The association was formed in 1966 with around 100 members, reaching 1,000 in 1993. By 2,000 that number had doubled and now a

with their day jobs as many of them work in the tourism industry, so we are especially grateful to them in summer – and to their employers who allow them to stop work at the bleep of a pager to help others, and given the current economic climate for businesses this is a great contribution to the charity.” Local authorities make a significant contribution to the cost of wages for RNLI seasonal lifeguards while the RNLI charity funds the remaining costs, including training and equipment, and Mr Viasto added: “We are pleased too that local authorities remain committed to part-funding the RNLI lifeguard services. DISCUSSIONS are continuing between the government and the British Marine Federation on the Fuel Quality Directive Transposition, which means that all red diesel for inland waterway vessels and recreational craft when not at sea has to be virtually sulphur free by 1 January next year. Regulations on the sulphur content of red diesel used in seagoing vessels are not changing. The Federation has raised issues concerning the definitions of ‘sea-going’ and ‘inland waterway’.

MISCHIEF, the catamaran owned by a yachtsman dubbed “Captain Calamity” was destroyed while attempting to ride Britain’s biggest wave, known as the Cribbar, at Fistral Beach, Newquay, Cornwall. Retired electrician Glenn Crawley, 55, sailed his 18-foot catamaran to the Cribbar Reef half a mile offshore.The £1,500 boat disintegrated in the waves and Mr Crawley was rescued by lifeguards. In 2007 he was rescued four times in four hours by local sailors and coastguards. Paul Benney, RNLI area lifeguard manager, said: “Mischief has ended up in pieces but I doubt it will stop him sailing. He doesn’t seem the type to stop.” Glenn Crawley said: “I’m going through a never-ending learning curve. If you don’t capsize, you’re not trying hard enough. I will have a new boat after Christmas.”

Raise a glass to Nelson’s memory Following the battle the British navy was the most powerful in the world and played a major role in the expansion of the British Empire. Despite the ending of the daily rum issue 40 years ago rum blended to the Admiralty’s specification is still available for public consumption thanks to Canadian entrepreneur Charles Tobias. He obtained the Admiralty’s specification and their permission to produce the unique blend of rums under the Pusser’s brand name. In return he has donated a royalty raised on every bottle of Pusser’s Rum sold to the Royal Navy Sailors’ Fund, known as the “tot fund” which provides amenities for serving personnel. OCTOBER 21 is a day and night which will see glasses raised to history as Trafalgar Day is celebrated, especially by off-duty naval and exnaval personnel. For more than 300 years in the Royal Navy’s longest serving tradition rum was issued daily to serving sailors wherever they were around the world. The rum was known as Pusser’s rum because it was served by the ship’s purser. The tradition ceased on 31 July 1970, which is now known as Black Tot Day. On Trafalgar Day many a tot of “Nelson’s Blood” will slide down thirsty throats in honour of the memory of Vice Admiral Lord Nelson. In toasting the memory of the great Admiral, seagoing memories will be exchanged and thought given to Britain’s great seagoing heritage.

Superyacht UK, a dedicated association of British Marine Federation (BMF), represents over 170 members, working in the design, build, supply chain and service provision of yachts over 24 metres in length. There are around 3,550 people working in the sector.

New protection LOBSTER, crabs, fish and kelp benefit from a newly designated marine protected area off Flamborough Head, East Yorkshire. The North Sea’s first No Take Zone was formally established to protect marine wildlife and is the third No Take Zone designated in British waters. A No Take Zone means exactly that – you cannot remove anything from within the designated area, above or below the high tidemark including fish, seaweed, shellfish and rocks. You are welcome to examine fossils or ramble and look through rock pools but leave everything as you found it.

Global search for record breaker SCOTTISH explorer Jock Wishart has announced an international competition to find the final crew member for a pioneering arctic expedition – The Old Pulteney Row to the Pole. The Old Pulteney Pole Position Challenge will put the world’s thrill seekers to the ultimate test to see if they have what it takes to make history. They will join a remarkable mission to conquer what could be one of the world’s last true ‘firsts’ – a rowing attempt to the North Pole. In August 2011, adventurer and sportsman Wishart will lead a six strong crew through some of the harshest conditions on earth in an attempt to row to the Magnetic North Pole. In a specially designed ‘ice boat’. Jock and his crew will set off from Resolute Bay in Canada and the Pole Position winner will be given the once in a lifetime opportunity to join them. The Old Pulteney Row to the Pole is of global significance as both a pioneering maritime adventure and an environmental expedition. The voyage has never been undertaken before and is only now possible due to the increase in seasonal ice melt in

the Arctic. Wishart said: “When you’re planning an Arctic expedition the most important thing is your crew. When Shackleton asked Jock Wishart for his crew he made it clear what kind of people he needed: ‘Men wanted for hazardous journey. Small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, safe return doubtful, honour and recognition in case of success.’ “The Old Pulteney Row to the Pole will hopefully not be as dangerous as Shackleton’s adventure but there will be plenty of excitement, adventure and opportunities for the Pole Position winner to test their mettle and physical stamina. “ Old Pulteney’s partnership with Jock is rooted in the whisky’s maritime heritage and history of supporting sailing and seafaring adventure. New look for London show LONDON’S biggest boating experience will have new layout and new features when the Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show, returns to ExCeL from 7 – 16 January. Throughout the 10 day event, hundreds of exhibitors will showcase the marine industry’s finest products, services and equipment and roughly 1000 boats ranging from kayaks and dinghies to sail boats and motor yachts will be open to climb aboard, explore and trial. The new layout for 2011 will divide equipment and fittings, marine services, a retail village and holiday and watersports zone into ExCeL’s North Hall and boats of every description into the South Hall. New features will include a used boats marina for the first time with up to 70 used boats of all shapes and sizes on sale and the North Hall will feature a dedicated watersports zone full of products, equipment, training and services to meet all watersports interests and needs. A new Watersports Action Pool, measuring 70 by 24 metres will allow visitors to try stand-up paddle boarding, wakeboarding, windsurfing, dinghy sailing, canoeing and kayaking, as well

as model yacht racing. The pool will combine ‘Try It’ sessions and live demos by watersports experts, including a canoe polo championship. World champions and record breakers including pro wakeboarder Matt Crowhurst, SUP distance champion John Hibbard and indoor windsurfing world champion Nik Baker are lined up to share their skills with visitors and to showcase the full range of watersports on offer. MDL Marinas has revealed the winners of its annual MDL in Bloom competition, which rewards the ‘green-fingered’ teams across its 21 marina sites. The marina teams entered a variety of garden displays and floral arrangements into the competition’s five categories. Scooping the ‘X’ Factor title and the coveted best overall award was Shamrock Quay Marina in Southampton – receiving an engraved trophy and gift vouchers for its marina team. Best borders and beds was won by Woolverstone Marina in Ipswich, best hanging baskets by Mercury Yacht Harbour on the River Hamble, and MDL’s Hamble Point Marina took the award for best tubs and containers. Regatta to remember president EIGHT yachts turned the Solent red in the Clipper Race Yacht Club’s inaugural Red Socks Regatta in memory of its late president, Lieutenant-Commander Colin de Mowbray. Activate your Lasers FOR most sailors there is no sadder sight than a boat going to waste when someone could be out enjoying it out on the water. And sadly far too many boats are hidden in the undergrowth of dinghy parks whilst their covers become covered in green moss. According to the Watersports and Leisure Participation Survey 2009 conducted by the RYA, BMF, RNLI and MCA there are more than one million adults (aged over 16) sailing in the UK and that only approximately 71,000 of these sail more than 25 times a year, that’s about twice a month. So what can we do to get these people sailing more often and more boats back out on the water? The Activate Your Laser Fleet collaboration between the RYA, LaserPerformance and the International Laser UK Class Association aims to support clubs to develop new ideas on how to encourage Laser owners and sailors back on the water and to reclaim those abandoned Lasers sitting in sailing clubs. A series of workshops have been run on and off the water and sailors have been able to share ideas and identify which initiatives they can introduce at their clubs to ‘Activate’

their Laser fleets. So far ideas have included more coaching sessions, competitions and racing for beginners. Graham Manchester, RYA Adult Participation Manager said: “The ‘Activate’ project was launched this year and we now have 50 clubs and about 100 volunteers involved in the project. “It has been brilliant to hear so many fantastic ideas coming from the clubs which are turning out to be so successful.” Glossop Sailing Club in Derbyshire, for one, has been working very hard to find ways to ‘Activate’ their Lasers and thanks to their inventive ideas and plans they have recently been crowned the winners of the first ever

Activate Your Laser Fleet Award for Innovation.” Glossop winning ideas include hosting activity, training and racing days awarding those who attend with raffle tickets and the chance to win a brand new Laser sail at the end of the season. They also created LaserBeam, a short and simple weekly newsletter and have appointed a Laser Fleet Captain. Club captain David Worth said: “There is no doubt that the ‘Activate’ programme has really created some momentum at the club and we’re sure will encourage even more participation from club members.” As winners of the Innovation Award Glossop SC will be spending a day with Olympic, World and

European Laser title holder Skandia Team GBR’s Paul Goodison who is ambassador of the ‘Activate Your Laser Fleet scheme later in the year. Another club bitten by the ‘Activate’ bug is Olton Mere Sailing Club based in the heart of Solihull in the West Midlands. After a successful Activate Your Laser workshop the club set themselves three objectives, one of which was to gain maximum enjoyment and performance from their existing boats. They arranged a dedicated club training day specifically for the Laser Fleet back in April and had a fantastic turnout of 15 boats. The day included tips on how to restore Lasers, racing tips including demonstrations of how to prepare for the start line and approaches to upwind and downwind marks. Many of the attendees of the training day returned the following week to practice their skills with less confusion resulting in tighter starts and a better understanding and application of the racing rules. So what’s next for ‘Activate?’ “We want to continue to help the existing 50 clubs which have attended the ‘Activate’ days to implement their plans such as run training days, repair old boats to get them racing again or to develop social activities

within the club,” said Graham. “Many clubs are doing this off their own back whilst others are using our Regional Club Coaches and getting help from LaserPerformance. We are also aiming to organise a further ten ‘Activate’ days across the country during the winter and spring.” The ‘Activate scheme’ has grown since it was launched and Brett Cokayne has been contracted as the new Project Coordinator. Sailing and self esteem Geoff Holt The former professional yachtsman who was paralysed in a swimming accident and inspired sailors when he became the first quadriplegic to sail the Atlantic.

THE Sailability Multiclass Regatta claims to be the biggest event of its kind in the world. First run in 2007, this year’s regatta was bigger than ever with 60 boats and more than 80 disabled sailors converging on Rutland Sailing Club. Racing took place in a selection of disabled-friendly classes which included the Challenger trimaran, the Artemis, the Access 303 (singleperson and two-person), the Laser Stratos and the Access Liberty. The only Paralympic class on show was the 2.4 metre keelboat with the SKUD 18 and the Sonar boats otherwise committed at the Sail for Gold Regatta in Weymouth meaning there were no Team GBR Paralympic squad members present to offer that extra inspiration. Apart from snow, competitors were treated to just about every other meteorological event during the three-day event. Gusts in excess of 30 knots, hail

and thunder greeted competitors one day with cold light airs and clear skies the rest; certainly conditions to test every aspect of a sailor’s repertoire. And none more so than Glen Gordon and Len Pope, two sailors with an intellectual disability who had flown in especially from Tortola in the British Virgin Islands to compete. More accustomed to sailing in tropical waters, they managed to win their class in the Laser Stratos despite being wrapped from head to foot in gloves, scarves and thermal clothing. In addition to the sailors, 85 volunteers ensured the event went without a hitch. Like all regattas, there were many complex logistics to overcome, not least shore-side accommodation and on-water race management. In addition to those challenges, most sailors with a disability needed one-to-one help getting changed into sailing gear and they need help in launching and recovering. It’s an irony which underlines the benefits of sailing that the one time disabled sailors need the least help is when they are actually sailing. Debbie Blachford, RYA Sailability Manager, said: “It is a significant operation to get everyone on and off the water as safely and as efficiently

as possible and the fact so many people are so willing to give up their time makes it such a special event. “Self-esteem is one of the biggest things the sailors get from events such as this and when you see the sailors come off the water really enthusiastic and chattering away all the effort that goes into making it happen is really fulfilling for the competitors and volunteers.” As you would expect, racing was highly competitive with Swindon based David Durston winning the Ken Ellis Trophy for the overall Glen Gordon and Len Pope practising in Tortola regatta Champion. Give your log a tooth scrub Sticky’s tips By Sticky Stapylton

I FIND very often that with a boat moored in a river with a strongish tide the log becomes entangled with weed or sometimes a mollusc or two if left with the paddle wheel in place while the boat is at rest. More often than not, the discovery is made after leaving the mooring and when one is about to set the sails. So someone has to go down below, lift the sole, withdraw the paddle wheel, put in the blanking plug, clean the clogged log and then put it back in. All rather tedious, so why not remove the log at the end of a trip and this will remove the need for a clean? If you are not the only user of the boat, it is important to leave a note on the chart table to say that the log has been removed just as a reminder to the next skipper to come on board that if he wishes to navigate, the log will have to be put back in. A well found boat will have an old toothbrush kept with the log and blanking plug so that the paddlewheel can be quickly cleared of debris. I was reading of a boat owner, who, despite having a clean log with

a freely spinning paddlewheel, still found that while getting a reading on the instruments, it was clear that there was a definite under reading. On pushing out the retaining pin holding the impeller in position, the owner found an encrustation. On cleaning this off the log was found to be working correctly. For those of you who sail in the Solent and would like to carry out a check over a measured mile, there are the marker posts on the SW side of Southampton Water between Fawley Refinery jetty and Hythe Village Marina. But remember to plan your checks as near as you can to slack water and make three runs to work out your average log reading.

Steering compass On the subject of navigation instruments, do make sure that the steering compass, particularly those on a binnacle with wheel steering, are protected as much as possible from the weather. There are often four small holes in the binnacle which are there so a compass adjuster can, remove or reduce deviation by playing with some magnets. These magnets allow the compass

to be adjusted without taking the device off the binnacle. The holes are normally protected by plugs which may deteriorate over time and with salt water ingress rusting the magnets, errors can creep in. If you have a bulkhead mounted compass, you can have the same problem. If you ever have to remove any steering compass and find there is electrical wiring nearby, do ensure that the positive and negative wires are twisted together. A single DC wire creates a magnetic field which will cause deviation.

Fuel gauge I wrote some time ago of how I ran out of fuel with the gauge showing half full. And that was on the day I took the boat over! It turned out that the owner had a new fuel tank and the fitter had failed to check that the sender to the gauge was in the same position as previously. If you do not know your boat’s fuel consumption and you have an engine hours meter, it is worth while making a note of your hours run, fill up the tank(s) and when you next take on fuel make a note of the engine hours and how much fuel you put in.

If you have been using the engine normally you should get an idea of what your fuel consumption is. A motor boater’s rule of thumb is one gallon per hour for each 20hp-worth of diesel engine and one gallon per hour for every 12 -14 hp for petrol engines. Consumption will, however, depend on how heavy the helm is with the throttle, the weather and the sea state. With no engine hours meter, I keep a record in my log of engine running hours.

AS Ambassador of Ladies Day at the PSP Southampton Boat Show I was asked to help judge the Best Dressed Lady and got to meet a group of female media representatives who took to the water in some rather small dinghies to be put through their paces by the female instructors of Rockley Watersports as they competed in the Ladies Day challenge. The Ladies Day challenge saw Meridan’s TV presenter Sally Simmonds, Heart FM’s Radio DJ Jules, Tara Russell a reporter from the Daily Echo, Wessex Cancer’s representative Kim Lawford and Boat Show Sponsor PSP’s Jo Dixie on the water to learn the basics of dinghy sailing. After an hour’s expert tuition the

girls were on top form and the real challenge began. The rookie sailors were set the task of competing against each other in a race in the marina – right in front of the Platinum Lounge bar and Ladies Day delegates enjoying a glass of wine over lunch. Guess where I was! As the air horn sounded Meridan’s Sally Simmonds stole the wind from the others and got off to a flying start with PSP’s Jo Dixie right behind her closely followed by Tara from the Daily Echo. They looked like pros and I was quite glad I was not out there with them because I think they would have beaten me. The three top girls held their positions to take first, second and third podium positions. After lunch the ladies were treated to a fashion show by Rhian’s of Warsash. As the models took to the show’s main stage to display some of the latest fashions they were joined by some of the crew of HMS Dauntless.

THE launch of ‘Calypso’ at the PSP Southampton Boat Show marked the end of a challenging and remarkable nine-month project by The Green Blue and Jeremy Rogers boat builders to build a brand new greener version of the legendary Contessa 32. The idea behind ‘Calypso’ was born of a desire by the Rogers family to build a family cruising boat that would have the least possible impact on the environment. The starting point was a product called Kebony, a truly sustainable alternative to teak for the decking and interior. Kebony is made from sustainably sourced soft woods such as maple and is treated with a byproduct from the sugar industry. The process effectively turns the soft wood into a hardwood which is just as durable and workable as Teak. Encouraged and excited by the Kebony find, the Rogers looked around to see what else was out there to make Calypso green.

There soon followed a diesel/ electric hybrid engine, wind turbine, solar panel, led lights, super-efficient cooker using 30 per cent less gas, non-toxic fouling release instead of antifoul, petro chemical free wood varnish, a bilge filter and a dual purpose propeller (another way of charging the bank of batteries) to name but a few. Launch day quickly approached, and following a few late nights and nail biting moments, she was finally ready for the show. We were all incredibly proud of the finished result, Calypso attracted a constant crowd of admirers on the pontoon who looked lovingly at her classic design and were equally impressed with her new high tech sustainable features. The Calypso project provided an invaluable opportunity to explore new products and technologies, many of which can be retro fitted, and coincides with the re-launch of The Green Directory, the only online directory of greener products for the boating sector, which has been newly updated to offer an enhanced user experience.

The Green Directory, a partnership between The Green Blue and Sailing Networks, was developed to provide a route to market for the suppliers and manufacturers of greener boating products. Users can add their environmentally friendly products for free and these are viewed by thousands of boaters via the Sailing Networks website and The Green Blue’s Facebook and Twitter pages. Visitors to The Green Directory will experience a great new look, easier navigation and more information than ever before, whilst for companies with listed products, a brand new Green Directory ‘listed’ logo will be available to use alongside the products on their own websites. THE word ‘free’ and ‘yachts’ are rarely found in the same sentence. But Weir Quay Boatyard is so keen to introduce yachtsmen to the wonders of the Tamar estuary that it is offering up to six months of winter mooring without charge.

To encourage people to explore the upper reaches of the Tamar, the yard is offering 18 months of sheltered moorings for the price of 12 months to anyone who signs up now. That means you don’t pay again until April 2012 and you won’t be affected by the VAT increase in January 2011. Proprietor Mike Hooton said: “Most yachtsmen turn around at the Tamar Bridge. Little do they realise that just two miles further on there are fully serviced moorings and superb yachting facilities in a beautiful and tranquil environment of international importance”. “Where you keep your boat is very important to most people – it’s often like a second home,” said Mike. “Our customers really appreciate

the remarkable landscape as well as the sailing opportunities and they explore the local footpaths and pubs and get to know the local community.” The upper tidal reaches of the Tamar River are part of the Devon and Cornwall Mining Landscape World Heritage Site. They are also a European Special Area of Conservation, Site of Special Scientific Interest and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The River Tamar is also renowned for its wildlife. It is a winter home for avocets and little egrets and it is currently jumping with salmon and otters and seals are in residence. Winter sailing is also easy with plenty of protected water to explore and easy access to the sea when the weather is fair. Peter Charles who keeps his 35-foot ketch on the Tamar said: “I have had some of my best cruises in January. You have the seas to yourself and the ports and harbours are free and warmly welcoming, so I always keep my boat afloat in the winter.” As part of the special offer, the boatyard lifts out, cleans the boat and provides storage ashore for as long as is needed. Rigging and all the safety systems are checked annually and tradesmen are on hand to service engines, make running repairs and to carry out re-fits. There is a chandlery and store with provisions and newspapers, as well as hot showers in a new luxury facilities block with complimentary espresso and free wi-fi.

Bucking economic trend THE yard’s engineering department is helping it to buck the economic down-turn, said proprietor Mike Hooton. “They have established a very high reputation for their knowledge, care and attention to detail – that is our hallmark.” To help share the workload marine engineer and electrician David Pascoe has been appointed a full-time member of the team. He started working part time in April 2008 while completing his BTEC National Award in Marine Engineering and a City and Guild Level 2 in Small Craft Maintenance at the Falmouth Marine School, achieving the highest marks awarded for both courses. With the support of the yard, he obtainied further City and Guild Level 2 and 3 qualifications in Electrical Installation

Engineering and a Foundation Degree in Electrical Engineering and Renewable Energies from the University of Plymouth. Dave joins Spencer Hamlyn, Head of Engineering during the yard’s busiest year. “Our main job is to make sure that the engines and systems of 100 yachts are performing as well as they can but the demand for our expertise means that we are increasingly taking on work from boats kept anywhere in the Plymouth estuaries and marinas,” said Spencer. This year the team has installed six new diesel engines and managed the re-building of numerous others. They have installed gear and equipment for three boats preparing for trans-Atlantic crossings and fitted heating systems, plumbing, charging systems, navigational and electronics equipment.

Home from home DESPITE living in Leicestershire – a 250 mile and four-and-a-half hour drive away, John Chadwick has been mooring his vessels at Weir Quay for more than 15 years. His 36-foot cruiser Stromboli has taken John and his wife Sue on numerous long voyages, including an 18-month trip to Gibraltar and the Caribbean and a 14-month round-Britain cruise in 2004-05, which was documented in his book Stromboli Goes Forth.

But he always looks forward to returning. “However long we are away, Mike Hooton always keeps our mooring open for us,” said John. “He will even leave a dinghy on our mooring in anticipation of our arrival, which really makes us feel welcome. “We stumbled upon Weir Quay and the Tamar by accident and we just fell in love with the peace and beauty of the place,” said John.

The Tamar becomes a wide expanse of tranquillity at Weir Quay before it bends sharply and starts to wind between steep treelined hills and through a rural landscape occasionally marked by a haunting relic from the industrial past. “Compared to being jammed in a marina – which is essentially a car-park for yachts – we go to bed with the sound of the tide gurgling around the boat and the moon lighting up the water,” said John. The standard of marine service coupled with having access to all marine trades in one place also keeps John coming back to Weir Quay. “It’s reassuring to know that my beloved boat is entrusted to experts who care for her as much as I do,” he said. Far away at his home, John can alo rest assured that Stromboli is regularly checked and monitored on her mooring by staff who know the yacht intimately. “We’ve come to the conclusion that we can’t bear to take her away from our beloved Weir Quay, which really is a home from home”, said John. The solution? They have decided to bring their home a little closer and have bought a cottage close to the boatyard instead!

Despite opening with grey skies and bouts of inclement weather during the week, 122,106 visitors frequented the SBS which was a marginal increase on last year and an excellent result for the show. Andrew Williams, Managing Director of National Boat Shows said: “We’re delighted to have gained such a strong attendance at the show and have delivered such a spectacle from both the outstanding products and fabulous attractions for all to get involved with. We’ve hosted more exhibitors and 70 more boats on the marina than last year.” With the economic climate having forced many into cautionary mode, exhibitors may have been forgiven for being slightly apprehensive about

the number of sales to be made. Worries were quickly put to bed however as bullish show goers followed up their enthusiasm with their cash, creating a collection of success stories from many of the exhibitors. Lombard Marine Finance had a particularly lucrative show with business up by 53 per cent from last year, reflecting green shoots in the market. Fairline also reported a steady flow of sales. Miles Moorhouse, marketing director, said it was what the company had expected: “We’ve had a steady flow of sales not just in the small boat range but sales have extended across all models. “We’re also expecting to confirm a new dealership in California which is really exciting news for Fairline.”

Automatrics, based in Solent Business Park, Hampshire, were encouraged to promote a much needed marine security theft location finding service by Insurance loss adjuster Peter Clark from C Claims, who describes some areas of marine theft as ‘now reaching pandemic proportions’.

One boat yard owner who visited Automatrics at the show, explained criminals’ ingenuity when they simply bypassed the standard site security systems, including CCTV, intruder alarms, locks and security fencing, all rendered useless by a gang who made off with several large outboards valued at over £120,000. The highest theft risk assets as detailed by the Stolen Boats website,

www.stolenboats.org.uk, are identified as outboard engines, jet skis, rigid inflatable boats, narrow boats and trailers with a theft totals now over 2,500 reported incidents. The true scale of marine theft though is generally accepted to be even higher as many crimes simply go unreported. The new Mtrack Boatwatch theft finding service is the first in the world to boast a 24/7 monitoring certificate from the acclaimed standards house Thatcham Quality Accreditation (TQA®). Thatcham, a name synonymous with international safety and security standards has recently expanded services to encompass the after theft recovery needs of the marine industry. The Thatcham certification process concentrates on verifying the supplier’s quality in the manufacture, designs and service performance. Tests are performed against predefined criteria, with rigorous examination of quality systems and manufacturing process controls, the certificate is intended to give confidence in service performance capability for end users and insurers. The Norwegian designed and FG certified technology used in Mtrack Boatwatch has proven to work in the harshest of environments, including

outboard engines. The service boasts up to three different location tracking technologies, GSM (Global System for Mobile), GPS (Global Positioning Satellites) and RF (Radio Frequency). This variation of technology combined with a two to four year self powered battery in one small waterproof package ensures maximum recovery capability. Automatrics Director Richard Taylor described how four years experience of after-theft finding services to plant, car, truck and caravan owners, achieving a 98% per cent recovery rate, was now being expanded to help protect and secure marine assets. Marine insurers will have lower theft risk from clients who select the 24/7 alarm monitoring and theft protection tracking service. In return Insurance underwriters can consider supporting owners with reductions in premiums.

There was also Calypso, an eco boat that fits within the Contessa 32 class and incorporates a hybrid marine engine, solar panels and wind turbines, fuel cell technology, lithium ion batteries, and a whole range of energy saving ideas. Arriving somewhat indiscreetly on the first Sunday afternoon, the Royal Navy’s newest and most advanced warship, HMS Dauntless, paid a three-day visit to the show. More than 4,000 visitors took the opportunity to explore the

impressive Type 45 Destroyer. At any major show it’s inevitable that the high profile prestige brands vie with each other to gain maximum exposure for their opulent products. They draw crowds of people eager to see what they could buy should they win the Euro Lottery. But the joy of a show with the status of Southampton is that there is also a chance to see truly beautiful yet affordable boats. A host of interesting and tempting offerings lurked in the Dinghy Park. For those who appreciate traditional

craftsmanship the Mallard 12-foot sail dinghy from Lakeland Wooden Boats looked almost too good to risk afloat as did the delightfully crafted eight-foot dinghy from Nestaway Boats. Remarkably this dinghy is also available in a stacking version, in two halves. For those who like to boat quietly Kittiwake Boats of Macclesfield showed a really tempting 16-foot Kittiwake yacht. Just a few yards away was the EzyBoat; a modern triumph of original thinking and

More innovative craft took the form of a delightful traditional Dutch style dayboat from ABC Marine, the first 5.2m RIB from Excel, and a most unusual sit-on sports boat from Yellowfin. And diversity was the secret of the show. Even a brief recce around the pontoons revealed a host of craft built for a multitude of roles. There was a floating office, a Fleming passage maker, a delightful Levi Corsair traditional style sports cruiser, a new centre console from Pirate Boats, and the first Capelli without tubes to come into the UK. The rather stylish craft was bought by a gentleman as a birthday present for his wife and the first she knew of

their transoms. Mariner and Yanmar also had their customary stand right by the pontoons, with several Genesis RIBs and Sun Sport inflatables to choose from. BHG Marine, just a few miles from home, occupied their traditional spot offering a whole range of family boats from brand leaders such as Linder, Avon, Ribtec and RibEye. to just over 1,000 visitors enjoying the benefits of the Platinum Lounge and their time on the water.”

The SBS had set their sites this year on getting more people out on the water and providing a more interactive experience. The show achieved this aim by getting people afloat aboard a RIB, powerboat or yacht with the Try-ABoat experience, hosted with On the Water (www.onthewater.co.uk). The Suzuki RIB Experience was also a huge success and managed to get more than 1,500 people on the water while raising more than £1,000 for the Sea Cadets, according to Gareth Lumsdaine, of Suzuki GB. Ladies Day The third annual Ladies Day had promised to be the best to date - and did not disappoint. With plenty of exciting events happening throughout the day from a sailing challenge, to fashion shows and prizes for the best dressed lady, there were many opportunities to take in the action and also contribute to the Wessex Cancer Trust – the event’s official charity. The Ladies Day ambassador was naturally none other than All at Sea’s columnist ands powerboat racing champion Shelley Jory-Leigh. Read her report from the show on page 17. Check the weather IS it raining or will it rain later – oillies ready? It’s sunny now but look at the black clouds in the distance – T-shirts on, jumpers on stand-by? It’s a little bit windy now but how windy will it be tomorrow – hold on to your hats? Before you go out boating it’s always important to check the weather and see what it will be like when you’re out on the water, that way you can make sure you’re properly prepared – sun hat, swim suit, waterproofs, wellies…

Can I just look outside? It’s not always as simple as having a look outside the window because the weather can often change pretty quickly. You can impress your parents by having a look at the weather forecast on the internet, which is always updated really quickly. Try visiting the Met Office website where you can even swot up on the weather forecast for the following few days!

Help! I can’t get on the internet. If you can’t get on the internet don’t worry! There are loads of other ways to see what the weather will be like. You can try looking in newspapers, tuning into the radio and even looking at the noticeboards in your sailing club/harbour house. Keeping one step ahead of the weather really couldn’t be easier!

But what does the forecast actually mean? Ok, so you’ve now found the weather forecast, but here’s the tricky bit – what does it all mean? Luckily, we’ve put together a short guide on what some of those confusing terms actually mean…… High Pressure: This means the weather will be settled, so you can expect it to be dry and the winds will be light. Low Pressure: This is the opposite of high pressure, so the weather

will be unsettled. So remember the waterproofs because it could get wet and windy! Imminent: The weather to expect within six hours. Soon: What to expect between six and 12 hours. Later: What the weather will be like after 12 hours. So make sure you check the weather before heading out to sea and be prepared. Sample a strongbox of fortissimo flavours

TIME was when pub choices were pretty basic and a ‘strong’ beer usually meant a barley wine. Working fishermen in the ‘Harbour Lights’ fortified it further with a whisky and old folks liked it for the lower volume for the same result. Fair enough, but now there is a different reason to sample the strong beers we find on offer – I’m talking over six per cent abv, with distinctive meaty flavours. Sailing visitors to Ostende will know of the famous, strong, Belgian Trappiste-type beers, but there is a growing offering from UK brewers in the over six per cent category. Once the summer has gone and thirstquenching is not the priority, winter brings the pleasure of switching to the ‘strongs’ for contemplative sipping in a cosy pub. Brakspear Triple, 7.2 per cent abv, is a bottleconditioned ale, so a bit of ritual is required to

pour it gently. It is given two fermentations in the brewery to get the strength up, then the in-bottle conditioning is counted as a third – hence the name claim ‘Triple’ – and that is what produces the full malty flavour. With about 60 per cent stronger than a session bitter but with only an 18 per cent price premium, sip and save instead of quaffing. Marstons, known for Pedigree and Old Speckled Hen bitters, offers Strong Pale Ale at 6.2 per cent. Slow fermentation gets the strength up which is not hugely obvious and the excellent taste makes it dangerously drinkable. £2.12 at Waitrose for a full 500ml bottle. In Scotland, Innes & Gunn have borrowed a few tricks from their whisky-making expertise. Innes Gunn Original is aged in oak casks for 77 days, they claim, to both draw and develop the flavour. The result at 6.6 per cent abv is a lightly oaked taste, mixed with malty honey and vanilla and rich golden colour. In 330ml bottles, at about £1.79 in Waitrose. Even more special is their Rum Cask version which, as the name says, is matured in rum

casks for 107 days. The result is unusual, dark brown, fruity, spicy, full-bodied and with a punch at 7.4 per cent abv and a small premium price of £1.99 per 330ml bottle. Belgium, though still sets the strong beers benchmark with its famous Trappiste brews Chimay ‘Pères Trappistes’ is at the top of the abv league at nine per cent, Fresh, fruity and very fizzy with a strong white head it is £2.45 per 330ml bottle and very distinctive. Duvel is very popular at our yacht club. Light colour and a refreshing hoppy flavor, bottle conditioned and, at a fat 8.5 per cent does in a half what a pint of regular bitter can do. I found it at a bargain price of £1.25 for 330ml at Sainsbury’s. Leffe is found on draught in smarter, trendier pubs. This is a sharp-flavoured beer, quite manageable at 6.6 per cent also in a 330ml bottle at about £1.53. Italian Peroni lager is often seen at regattas around Europe. Waitrose stocks its Gran Riserva 6.6 per cent special, a malty lager with fine flavor. At £1.69 per 330ml bottle, a good lager entry to our strong box.

Yacht saved from sandbank PORTHCAWL RNLI volunteers were paged on the night of 2 October to a Mayday distress call. A yacht was drifting on to the Nash sandbank and was hit by large breaking waves. The young crew of the yacht, bound for Llanelli, were unsure of their position, were experiencing engine failure, and were being pounded by breaking waves. The lifeboat launched and searched the sandbank using direction finding equipment and eventually located the yacht. Crew members went aboard and discovered that one of the young sailors was suffering badly from sea sickness. They towed the yacht back to Porthcawl harbour where the crew of the yacht were met by local coastguards and paramedics.

Devon lobster alert THE crew of the Ilfracombe RNLI all-weather lifeboat launched on 4 October to aid a local lobsterpotting boat. The vessel had suffered machinery failure 14 miles west of Ilfracombe when returning from Lundy Island. On arrival the lifeboat crew passed a tow to the casualty vessel and best speed was made back towards Ilfracombe. Due to the large swell the tow parted after five miles but was re-attached.

Lifeboats head to pier blaze VOLUNTEER crew members from Hastings RNLI lifeboat station were called out in the early hours after the town pier caught fire. The lifeboat crew were tasked to ferry fire fighters afloat to tackle the blaze. Crew members were paged at 1.15am on Tuesday 5 October after the Coastguard requested assistance from the station’s all-weather lifeboat and inshore lifeboat. The crew launched both lifeboats, taking fire fighters with specialist equipment aboard the larger, allweather lifeboat, Sealink Endeavour, to enable them to tackle the blaze. Although the pier has been closed to the public for some years, it was originally feared that there may have been people on the structure. Fire fighters used the lifeboat as a platform to operate thermal imaging

cameras to check for signs of life on the pier. Once it was deemed that there was no one on the pier, fire crews then used specialist pump equipment to tackle the fire with sea water. Clive Mayhew, volunteer press officer for Hastings RNLI, said: “Hastings RNLI has trained for an eventuality such as a fire on the pier. The pier has been closed to the public since 2006 so obviously there was the potential for it to be used by vagrants or targeted by people with a more sinister motive. “In recent years several other famous piers have burned down so the lifeboat crew and the fire service had actually previously discussed how we would react to such an incident. “A fire on the pier is not something the RNLI would automatically be involved in – only if there were a
