David notified the Board of Trustees of his decision to retire in June of 2024, at the end of the 2023-2024 school year. We greatly appreciate David’s service to the school as his love and commitment to Mount de Sales Academy is unmatched. While he has earned the right to retire, we will miss his leadership.

Mission Statement Mount de Sales Academy, an independent Catholic school, sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, is a diverse college preparatory community of learners - students and teachers alike - who are poised to discover, challenged to innovate, and motivated to serve.

In April, the Board approved a national search for our next president and engaged Partners in Mission (PIM) School Leadership Search Solutions. Kyle Pietrantonio, our partner through PIM, is working closely with us to ensure that we have exceptional candidates. In fact, he has commended our prompt response and efforts in starting this process so early. The first step was asking our constituents to complete an Enrichment Survey, and your assistance in that regard was extremely helpful in identifying the attributes that are expected in prospective candidates seeking to become the next President of Mount de Sales Academy. Kyle also visited our campus in August to speak directly with various constituent groups as he seeks to fully comprehend the Cavalier experience. Additionally, the Board has created a Search Committee which consists of a cross-section of faculty, alumni and school supporters who will help in identifying candidates for consideration. We are excited about this effort as we venture into our next 150 years. Please know that the Board of Trustees and the Search Committee are laserfocused on working diligently with Partners in Mission. THE GRIFFITH FAMILY: BETSY, WES, WYATT, JACKSON, KNOX AND “COOKIE”

THIS IS MY WHY by Laura Johnson, Director of Institutional Advancement When it comes to education choices, Betsy and Wes Griffith have the same challenge as many couples who both grew up in Macon. Betsy (’97) and her two brothers, Freddy Schnell (’94) and David Schnell (’99), graduated from Mount de Sales while Wes, his brother and sisters went to Stratford Academy. When their oldest son Wyatt was in pre-kindergarten, they began talking about where their boys would go to school. For many reasons, they agreed that St. Joseph’s and MDS were the best fit for their family. According to Wes, one primary reason was that Betsy’s father, Fred Schnell, believes strongly in a Catholic education.

“His passion for Catholic schools is strong and really paved the way for me wanting my kids to follow suit,” said Wes. “I guess you could say he’s a much better Catholic than I am a Baptist. He and his nine siblings all went to Catholic elementary and high schools, and seven of the ten went to college at Catholic institutions.” Betsy and Wes are deeply committed to the historic city center and have invested in its revitalization and growth as owners of The Moonhanger Group, which manages many popular restaurants and entertainment venues including The Rookery, Capitol Theatre, H&H, and Dovetail. They also are closely involved with Mercer

University; in fact, Wes and his partner Rob Evans manage Capricorn Sound Studios & Museum in partnership with Mercer. “We love that Mount de Sales is part of downtown Macon and close to Mercer,” noted Betsy. “The students have a unique opportunity to experience the city as they walk to downtown businesses, parks, and the library.” The Griffiths also appreciate that Mount de Sales’ is naturally diverse, and students are encouraged to accept and value differences. “Our family likes to travel and experience different cultures, so we like the diversity and the different economic backgrounds of the students,” said Betsy. The Griffiths have three sons – Wyatt, who is in the seventh grade at MDS, and Jackson and Knox who are in the fifth and first grades at St. Joseph’s.

The older boys have learning differences, and the Griffiths have found both schools to be nurturing and accommodating while also providing an excellent academic foundation. “Mount de Sales provides opportunities for students to have a lot of one-on-one interaction with teachers if needed,” noted Betsy. “I know that I was very prepared for college, and my brothers would say the same. We know that Wyatt is at the best school for him.” Wyatt is a much-loved student in the middle school. Chyrisse Smith, middle administrative assistant, shares an interest in learning German with Wyatt, which they discuss often. “Wyatt is intelligent, witty, highly focused, and a good soul,” said Chyrisse. We all are grateful to have Wyatt and the Griffiths as part of the Mount de Sales family!

WELCOME NEW FACULTY & STAFF JOUNGHWA WOO, FRENCH TEACHER JoungHwa Woo, in addition to French, also speaks Japanese and she has a goal to learn Spanish and sign language. Mrs. Woo is very excited to contribute her diverse language skills and cultural knowledge to the Mount de Sales community by prioritizing promoting diversity and inclusion for students' growth in the classroom. She is eager to foster a love for the French language and culture among her students at Mount de Sales Academy in 2023-2024.

CATHERINE LEWIS, HISTORY TEACHER Catherine Lewis is originally from Waukesha, Wisconsin and moved to Macon after living in Japan. Her experiences overseas coupled with her educational background will bring so much value and insight into the classroom at MDS to share with our students in 2023-2024.

CHRISTIAN BUZAS, BAND DIRECTOR

Mrs. Georgia Olson traveled for the Broadway Teachers Workshop held in July 2023. The Broadway Teachers Workshop is an annual conference designed to inspire teachers and directors with new teaching methods, enhanced production skills and an exchange of ideas with peers and professional Broadway artists behind the scenes on Broadway in New York City.

Christian Buzas is a music educator who has had the honor of conducting choirs, bands, and orchestras all across the US. He finds joy in seeing students develop their abilities and become more capable individuals through their natural talent and skills. Mr. Buzas is originally from Oradea, Romania.

Our varsity wrestling team traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana to Brother Martin High School for a wrestling camp featuring NCAA All-American athletes from Northwestern University.

Christina Sabo joins our Advancement team as the Director of Marketing and Communications. A P ERS ONAL R E F L E C T I ON: MI D D LE S CHOOL WOR K S HA R D, PLA YS HA RD Reflections by Chyrisse Smith, Middle School Administrative Assistant During the school day, not only do students work hard on assignments, electives, and extracurriculars, but middle school students at Mount de Sales Academy also have an opportunity to participate in days filled with joy. I always leave with a smile on my face. Seeing our students having so much fun is one of the best parts of my job.

MIDDLE SCHOOL RETREATS The students seemed happy to spend the day immersed in activities cultivating knowledge and learning more about the Catholic faith and how it relates to their world. I was glad to hear that they spent their time in this way because I believe it is important for the students to develop their faith and know about the world around them. I can’t wait to see how this year goes!

MIDDLE SCHOOL FIELD DAY Our middle school field day is one of the most exciting days because the students get to participate in field activities such as a 4x4 walk, tug-of-war, leapfrog, and other various races. Coach Robert Ochieng schedules the events to ensure the students make lasting memories.

This year we introduced a fun karaoke battle. What a fun time it was for everyone because our students came prepared and ready to sing their hearts out! It was a great hour of enjoyment for students including laughter for not just the students, but for the teachers -- we were all able to see the kids’ personalities. 4

MIDDLE SCHOOL SNOW DAY My favorite day in middle school is our celebrated “snow” day in February. In the morning, students are greeted with snow (fake) but nice fluffy foam blown from a snow machine. As students play around in the snow, their faces are full of glee. It’s moments in time when everyone gets to be a kid, including faculty - snow always brings out the child in all of us!

As you can see, we have a lot going on here in middle school. Don’t worry, the students are focused on assignments and buried in books during the school year - but they also enjoy moments of fun, joy and fellowship!

Paul Midkiff recently retired after 36 years at Mount de Sales Academy. Mr. Midkiff has touched the lives of countless students and faculty and his contributions leave a lasting impact. From teaching to coaching to academic support to serving as Dean of Students, Upper School Principal, and School Counselor, he’s truly done it all. In fact, he’s also been an MDS parent. His children, Maggie and Mitchell, graduated from MDS. Mr. Midkiff holds a special place in the history of Mount de Sales Academy because he was Sister Rosina Bayliss’ first hire. During his first year at MDS, Mr. Midkiff recalls teaching math, science, and religion and coaching both football and basketball. After his first year, he had many new experiences under his belt and he knew that he was at a special place, a place where he would stay for his whole career. Mr. Midkiff will spend retirement investing in his encore career - pickleball! He is the founder of Southern Pickleball, which currently manages leagues and tournaments in eight southern states. His Mount de Sales Academy community introduced him to pickleball. Mr. Midkiff shared that he was invited by former faculty members to play, an invitation that he could not decline. To his surprise, he was hooked after his first match. In this new season, Mr. Midkiff will miss his colleagues the most. “MDS is a special place. I am fortunate to be involved for 35+ years. It has impacted the way I live.” We, at MDS, have also been impacted by you, Mr. Midkiff. Thank you for your many years of service.

Michael Muth will miss the daily interactions with students when he retires after eight years at MDS and a long career in education. Dr. Muth began teaching as a graduate student at Duke University and taught philosophy at Wesleyan College before coming to MDS eight years ago to teach English. “Teaching English has been fun because you get to deal with stories that talk about human life and experiences so you can get at philosophical questions through literature maybe even more than in a philosophy class,” said Dr. Muth. A true lifelong learner, Dr. Muth is looking forward to getting back into his own scholarship as he transitions from full-time teaching and plans to expand on his research into the connections between literature and philosophy. He also will teach a great books class at Mercer University and continue to help the Mount de Sales students he has taught with college essays. But, he will miss the “real joy” he found while working at MDS. “Mount de Sales has been my favorite place to teach,” noted Dr. Muth. “There is a trusted administration, collegial faculty, and the students are delightful.” True to his role as an English teacher, Dr. Muth said farewell to the faculty and students by sharing the poem, "Ithaka," by Constantine Cavafy: “I hope your road is a long one, full of adventure, full of discovery.” We wish the same for Michael Muth as he sets off on his new Ithaka. Tony Barham, our beloved “T-Bar,” served at Mount de Sales Academy for twenty-two years with the maintenance crew and finally retired this year, to his wife’s delight. Mr. Barham diligently cared for Mount de Sales’ facilities and grounds, and jumped into whatever project needed help or fixing over the years, including the construction of our wooden animals displayed during last year’s drive-thru nativity. He has an angelic voice that has entertained our community at several Music at the Mount events, and he’s forever humble about it. He was hired by Sister Rosina Bayliss on May 1st, 2001, the same year his daughter graduated from Mount de Sales in 2001. Mr. Barham started as the solo maintenance man on campus and the team grew over the years. Before his journey brought him to Mount de Sales Academy, Mr. Barham was a structural steel worker for twenty years, climbing some pretty high metal structures in his day. He worked on four nuclear power plants, twenty coal-burning plants, and many other structures over the years. He worked at Plant Schere in Juliet and Plant Vogel near Augusta. Once his daughter was born, they decided on a career path that would keep him closer to home (and on the ground). He worked at St. Peter Claver for six years as their maintenance worker before making the leap to work at Mount de Sales. When asked what Mr. Barham will remember most about Mount de Sales he said, “It’s honestly about the community and love and family I felt at Mount de Sales. When I left, it felt like I was leaving part of my family behind.” Well, T-Bar, we’re always happy to welcome you back for a visit with your Mount de Sales family. For now, he’ll happily spend more time with his grandkids and work on some personal projects around the house.

CAVALIERS ARE CALLED TO EXCELLENCE THROUGH FAITH by Lauren Deal, Director of Constituent Relations Many of our students attribute their journeys to spirituality to a common scenario: they hear a calling. "A calling" is a deeply personal and often spiritual experience. It's that inner voice, that nagging feeling, or that overwhelming sense of purpose that propels individuals to pursue a particular path or undertake a specific mission. Callings can manifest in various ways - through a religious experience, a personal revelation, or a strong desire to make a positive impact on the world. We spoke with two of our recent alumni who have listened and pursued a calling that led them to a life invested in faith. Amanda Herrold (2018) shared that when she came to school; she had a mindset that God didn’t love her. Like so many entering the middle school years, there were feelings of confusion, insecurity, and dislike for one’s self. Middle school woes coupled with her diagnosis of profound scoliosis that required surgery took a toll on both her physical and spiritual health. But what struck her around the same time was how caring and compassionate every teacher was at Mount de Sales. Every student is required to take a religion class in middle school; then the curriculum shifts to theology courses in high school. Amanda was introduced to an array of theology classes that both challenged and strengthened her faith. She took an art class in Theology that she admitted was the most fun. There was also Faith and Reasoning incorporating St. Thomas Aquinas and his five proofs of God’s existence explained in great detail. Amanda also had an independent study based on the work and lectures given by St. John Paul II’s Theology of the Body. “When I was learning more about what the church teaches in regard to the dignity of the human person I latched onto it and from that, it eventually became the focus of my studies at Mercer. It was inspiring to learn what the church taught about the human person; that they have dignity, that they matter,” Amanda said. She had an epiphany at sixteen that God loved her. Amanda’s plans to utilize her Theology degree in a potentially non-traditional way, whether as a spiritual director or counselor. Teaching is always something she’s drawn to as well!

In speaking with our alumni, a common theme was shared in both stories: the impact our teachers have on the students at MDS. What we’ve learned students remember most are the relationships they build with their mentors during their time at MDS. Amanda stopped in to see Mrs. Liza Sumowski when she was on campus towards the end of last year. “I was super impressed with her,” Mrs. Sumowski stated. “She seemed so mature and confident. Her eighth-grade year was tough. She missed some school due to surgery. I was excited to see her and to see her doing so well.” Kevin Braski’s (2014) spiritual journey was foundational to his current position. He is currently studying to be a priest and is in his sixth year in seminary at Notre Dame in New Orleans. When Kevin was eight years old, his father Pat commented after Mass one Sunday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, “Wouldn’t that be cool if I one day called you father?” That statement affirmed a calling to the priesthood that Kevin was already feeling. His father went on further to say to the rector of the seminary, “Kevin’s a gift and it’s my job to get him back to his Father.” Kevin attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and continued his Catholic education at Mount de Sales Academy. Sacred Heart encouraged him to live his faith, and he was inspired by Mount de Sales teachers who genuinely enjoyed teaching. “MDS cares about its students. Teachers knew where to draw the lines too; you had to work hard and study hard to make good grades in classes,” Kevin said. He participated in youth group and football while at MDS which reinforced the community aspect he would lean on during an unexpectedly difficult time for his family. While in high school, one of Kevin’s four sisters was diagnosed with a brain tumor that resulted in several visits to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, which tested his faith. Kevin credits David Held with providing support, as he checked in with Kevin throughout his year during his sister’s brush with death. “Mr. Held emailed me to say that he was there whenever I needed anything.” Kevin recently returned from Portugal’s World Youth Day where he and other Mount de Sales alumni from Sacred Heart’s congregation, joined 1.5 million people in attending Mass together. The students enjoyed connecting with other Catholics from around the world, where they traded country flags, pins, and even wooden shoes from Holland. He shared several key takeaways from Pope Francis’ homily: The only time you should be looking down at someone is when you’re pulling them up. Look up and follow Jesus; He doesn’t go away. From Pope John Paul II, it was reiterated, “Do not be afraid. Do not settle for mediocrity. Jesus’ greatness comes from us following Him.” Kevin Braski will have his diaconate ordination at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Macon on June 15, 2024 at 10:00 AM. All are invited to attend and celebrate with Kevin and the Catholic community.

Monsignor John Cuddy Scholarship Fund

The Knights of Columbus Council #925 established the Monsignor John Cuddy Scholarship Fund in 2004 to honor Monsignor Cuddy and his ministry by providing financial assistance to a deserving and practicing Catholic family.

The Jeff Dobias Scholarship

Established by the Lasater family in honor of their beloved track and cross country coach, the scholarship assists one graduating senior and track or cross country athlete with college expenses.

Annual Fund gifts of all sizes make up the difference between tuition and the real cost of education. Donations to the annual fund sustain Mount de Sales as a premier academic institution by enhancing our technology, programs, and campus facilities used by every student, every day. The Spirit of Mercy Annual Fund starts on July 1 each year, and gifts may be made by June 30 of the following year.

Established in 2014 to honor the legacy of long-time coach and athletic director Mike Garvin, the scholarship is awarded to an outstanding scholar athlete.

The Goizueta Foundation endowed this fund for Hispanic/Latino students.

James 1:27 Scholarship Fund

The Murphey family endowed this fund to ensure that students who have lost a parent can complete their education at Mount de Sales.

Isabel Meath McKenney Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Established in 2012 through a bequest from Isabel McKenney's (’22) son Frank McKenney, the fund provides scholarships for Catholic students.

Joseph F. & Sarah T. Moran Memorial Scholarship Established in 1997 by the Moran family, the fund promote Catholic education and provide students the opportunity to benefit from the special faith-based environment and support provided by Mount de Sales.

SISTER MARY FIDELIS, 17 YEARS AS PRINCIPAL AT MOUNT DE SALES ACADEMY

WHY I GIVE: SISTER MARY FIDELIS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ENDOWMENT A new endowment in memory of Sister Mary Fidelis is being established to honor her 17-year career as Principal of Mount de Sales Academy during the 1970s and 1980s, a pivotal time in the growth and development of the school. Born in Savannah in 1925, Nancy Marie Barragan attended high school at St. Vincent’s Academy and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree at St. Agnes College followed by a master’s at Catholic University. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1943 and made her vows of final profession in 1949 as Sister Mary Fidelis.

Sister Fidelis served as principal at St. Vincent’s for 10 years before joining the faculty at Mount de Sales in 1970. In 1971, she was named Principal and remained in that role until her retirement in 1987. Expecting the best from herself and the faculty she worked with during her years at Mount de Sales, Sister Fidelis oversaw growth in both enrollment and physical facilities, including toward the end of her tenure the addition of middle grades to what had previously been a high school. One of the high school teachers that Sister Fidelis mentored at Mount de Sales was Sally Ryals, who taught high school math during the 1970s fresh from her bachelor’s degree at Mercer University.

“Those years at Mount de Sales were the foundation for my 30-year career as a math teacher, thanks largely to the guiding hand of Sister Fidelis. It only seems fitting to return some of what the school invested in me.”

“In her memory, my husband and I are establishing the Sister Mary Fidelis Professional Development Endowment, which when fully funded will support current faculty members in enhancing the quality of their instruction.” - Sally Ryals Burran

Sally and her husband Jim recently revisited their estate plan and their bequests. During that process, Jim, who retired from a career in fundraising, said, “If you are going to leave something in your will, let it be to the one who brings tears to your eyes.” They agreed that Sister Fidelis and the experience Sally had working at Mount de Sales, was the right choice. Sister Fidelis died in 2014 and is buried in Savannah.

The Class of 2023’s Valedictorian, Kovin Batten, is grateful that Mount de Sales holds students to higher standards than other schools thus preparing them well for college. Kovin will continue his education at MIT majoring in biology and chemistry to prepare for medical school. He plans to become a pathologist. Kovin certainly thrived in a rigorous academic environment, but he was also an active participant in campus life. He was the percussion section leader of the marching and concert bands, secretary of the Beta Club, and treasurer of the National Honor Society. In addition to playing lacrosse, Kovin was on the Mock Trial team and a member of the Helping Hands and Diversity Awareness clubs. At MDS, Kovin says he met interesting people from all walks of life and found the school a welcoming place for all. He also appreciated the caring faculty, many of whom became his mentors. “My teachers were always available for extra help, and I felt like they really wanted us to succeed,” noted Kovin. Upper School Division Head Emily Brown said that Kovin can only be described as exceptional. “Whether speaking about his intellect, inquisitive nature, or work ethic, teachers and community members alike cannot help but admire him,” Mrs. Brown noted. “At Mount de Sales, Kovin was a positive force in the classroom, modeling for his fellow students a nearly unmatched enthusiasm for learning. His insightful questions and unassuming leadership made each classroom that he was in a better place.”

Marion Clark

Class of 2023

“All of us are leaving Mount de Sales as above-average, brilliant scholars, taking with us not just core knowledge that we’ve been encouraged to nurture along the way. More than that, we’re all leaving richer in our personhood. After Mount de Sales, we are better friends. We are more kind, more considerate, and after many joining along the way, we are more welcoming of a new friend.” This is an excerpt from Marion Clark’s salutatorian speech to the 2023 graduates and guests at graduation. Marion is grateful for an educational environment that nurtured a love of learning and for classmates who were competitive enough to push her to excel. Marion’s love for Mount de Sales is infectious and she delighted in sharing the school with prospective families as a Cavalier Ambassador, a role she hopes to continue to have at the University of Georgia. Marion earned a Zell Miller Scholarship and plans to study biology or physics with the goal of going to medical school and becoming an anesthesiologist. She is appreciative of the help she received from College Counselor Kari Alderman who Marion said spent many hours helping her decide her educational and career path. “Marion is a brilliant young woman passionate about learning and succeeding,” said Mrs. Alderman. “She applied that same passion to her activities, clubs, and cheerleading here at school. Whatever she did, she was ‘all-in’ with enthusiasm and excellence. Beyond her natural leadership and academic gifts, she also has a passion for service and is a truly kind soul.” Marion follows in her father’s footsteps. Chris Clark was salutatorian of the class of 1990 (her mother Jenny Dunaway Clark was also a member of the class). In his graduation speech, Chris noted, “The memories, memorizations, and understandings with which we leave Mount de Sales are meaningless unless we use them to expand both our own and the world’s horizons…The competition, the love, and the influence of every one of you has made me a more complete person.” Those sentiments were echoed in Marion’s speech.

Josh Alantar

Class of 2023

The Monsignor John Cuddy Spirit of Service Award honors the senior who most exemplifies the same gentle nature, admirable courage, and deep religious commitment of the late Monsignor Cuddy. The recipient shares Monsignor Cuddy’s legacy to open the doors of faith for others and reach out to those in the local community. Josh Alcantar believes that having a strong faith means being in a relationship with God through genuine prayer and that spending time with God leads to service to others. He credits his youth group at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with forming his faith. “After going on a youth retreat, I became more involved in my church and began taking my faith more seriously,” said Josh. His youth group experience culminated in a trip to Portugal this summer to join other Catholic teens in World Youth Day, and Josh is looking forward to seeing the Pope in person. Josh’s faith continued to be developed at MDS, particularly through his connection with Reeves Coates, his theology teacher and cross-country coach. “Coach Coates was very inspiring, and I could always talk with him about my faith, my spiritual life, and my goals.” "Josh is a most worthy recipient of the Monsignor Cuddy award,” noted Mr. Coates. “Josh exhibits both a humble spirit and unparalleled dedication towards not only his personal growth but also in building, supporting, and respecting his relationships with his classmates and teammates. His deep faith, and commitment to living and spreading the Gospel message in his daily interactions has been a blessing and gift to everyone who has had the opportunity to have known him." The desire to continue his faith journey informed Josh’s decision on where to attend college. “I chose Ava Maria College in Naples, Florida because I want to grow in my faith alongside other Catholics. When I visited, I saw a chapel filled with students praying, and I like the idea of ‘peer pressure’ to be a good Catholic. It doesn’t hurt that the school is located in a great vacation spot in Naples, Florida either!” Josh cherished his time at Mount de Sales and said that one of the most important lessons he will take away from his high school experience is to enjoy the moment.

Kim Watson

Class of 2023

The Medal of Honor is the highest award given to a senior. The recipient epitomizes the spirit of Mount de Sales in his or her daily life and demonstrates a sense of compassion, mercy, and justice at the school, at church, and in the community. Kim Watson was in shock when she heard her name called to receive the Medal of Honor at graduation. “I transferred to Mount de Sales as a sophomore during Covid, so I wasn’t able to get involved initially or connect with anyone while learning online,” noted Kim. But that changed quickly, and Kim became a true Cavalier esteemed by teachers and peers and elected to leadership positions in Beta Club, Diversity Awareness Club, National Honor Society, and the cheer team. She also was nominated for a Golden Eagle award in citizenship. Kim’s authenticity and compassionate nature set her apart. “Miss Watson embodies our Cavalier charism of works of mercy and kindness and does even the little things at an exceptional level,” noted Mr. Carsten Franklin. “She brought a grace and genuine sincerity with her every day in a world in much need of kindness and sincerity.” Kim credits her teachers, especially Mr. Franklin and Mr. Todd Freeman, with modeling these traits. “Coach Freeman cares about everyone and has an energy that makes us smile, and Coach Franklin treated our class like family. I learned about caring relationships with adults from interactions with my teachers.” In Kim’s experience at other schools, the faculty were not nearly as caring as she found at MDS. “I made a power point presentation for my parents with a list of reasons why they should send me to Mount de Sales. I have been extremely happy with the decision I made.” Kim will pursue a degree in biomedical sciences at the University of Alabama, Birmingham with a goal of becoming a dermatologist.

Ella Hawkins Class of 2023

The Sisters of Mercy Award is given to the senior who most demonstrates the values of the Sisters of Mercy by reverencing the dignity of each person, creating a spirit of hospitality, and pursuing the integrity of word and deed in his or her daily life. Ella Hawkins said she was extremely honored to receive the Sisters of Mercy award. “I’ve been inspired by Catherine McAuley and the legacy of the Sisters of Mercy organization she created,” noted Ella. “I love their charity and perseverance. Whenever they faced difficulties, they trusted God in everything and found compromises for the greater good.” Even before teaching Ella, Ms. AnneCarter Stowe could sense that there was something particularly graceful and kind about her. “Ella has a unique, generous, independent, and insightful spirit,” said Ms. Stowe. “She brings all of these qualities to the classroom, to the writing that she generates in my class, and even to ordinary passing "hellos" in the hallway. Ella simply is the person she is: honorable, trustworthy, and kind, and you can't really help but pick up on it and appreciate it.” Ella credits MDS with instilling within her a love of learning, integrity, and respect for others. In the spirit of the Sisters, it has been important to Ella to give back to the school community that she feels has given her so much. She is particularly passionate about protecting the environment, also one of the Sisters critical concerns, and has been a leader in the environmental club to encourage school-wide recycling. At MDS, Ella also discovered an interest in technical theatre and was instrumental working behind the scenes of recent stage productions. In her senior practicum, Ella worked with Macon Little Theatre and realized her career aspiration is to work in theatre so she will pursue a bachelors of fine arts in technical production at Shenandoah University in Winchester, VA.

LITERARY MAGAZINE For decades, students have published a literary magazine sponsored by the Mount de Sales Academy English Department. The publication, which has had different names through the years, including Inklings, Cavalier Cavalcade, The Hard Copy, up to its current masthead, Page Break, features original creative writing pieces in the form of short stories and poems as well as artwork in a variety of mediums, including digital drawings, photography, and paintings.

Page Break gives Upper School students opportunities to see their work published, motivates creative students, and gives them an audience for their work. Student staff members gain skills in organization, management, and teamwork. They review submitted works and select which pieces will be published, edit writing pieces, create the layout for the final copy, and publicize the magazine to their peers through videos, announcements and flyers.

MIDDLE SCHOOL HONORS The Middle School Honors Program is a day, usually at the end of April, where family, parents/guardians, friends and students recognize the accomplishments of middle school students. Staff and faculty gather together and present the students with certificates, medals and trophies for their outstanding work in service clubs like Student Council, competitive activities like Quiz Bowl and academics like Junior Beta and Top Honors for Algebra, Religion, PE, Chorus and top honors in academic subjects. The honors program encourages all of our Middle School students to grow into outstanding Cavaliers. We are all learning what it means to be a Mount de Sales Cavalier! The top awards for the Middle School for the 2022-2023 school year: DAR AWARDS The DAR Citizenship Award is given to one student in each grade who best exemplifies an understanding of what it means to be a good citizen; they follow school rules, they are positive classmates and often serve the school in a significant manner.

The DAR American History Award is given to an eighth-grade student who demonstrates a genuine interest in American history and government. Citizenship-6th Grade: Jackson Attaway; 7th Grade: Aniya Scott; 8th Grade: Edward Massey American History-8th Grade: Savannah Durden ARDMORE PUBLISHING AWARD The Ardmore Publishing Company Scholarship is given through the generosity of Susan Crawford, a 1963 MDS graduate and faithful supporter of the Academy. The scholarship program encourages, and rewards student literacy talent as exhibited in exceptional knowledge of grammar and mastery of the craft of writing. Eighth graders and Upper School students are eligible to receive an award. Students must submit pieces of original writing.

UPPER SCHOOL HONORS THE CUM LAUDÉ SOCIETY The Cum Laudé Society was founded in 1906 to recognize the scholastic achievement of seniors in secondary schools, and the presence of a Cum Laudé chapter at a secondary school is an indication that superior scholastic achievement is valued and recognized by the institution. The Mount de Sales Academy Chapter is the only Cum Laudé society in Middle Georgia. This distinction is therefore one of the highest academic honors Mount de Sales Academy can bestow on its students. WRI TI NG ACROSS CURRI CULUM by Eileen Carlson, English Teacher Our English faculty hear a familiar refrain from alums who come back to campus to visit during their college breaks: “All those papers you made us write really helped.” “I help my college friends with their papers.” Mount de Sales boasts a strong tradition of preparing students to be competent, thoughtful writers. In the 1990’s, my former colleague and mentor, Sandra Tate, created and implemented a program she called Connect Write to give students writing experience beyond, but connected to, their English classes. Over the years, inspired by Mrs. Tate’s vision and passion for teaching writing, we have offered a myriad of opportunities and incentives for our students to write, forging connections between disciplines and between people.

IN THE CLASSROOM

WHY DO OUR STUDENTS WRITE?

Students write to learn. Our teachers understand the value of writing to learn. In Theresa Mosbrucker’s Spanish class, students summarize complex stories and thoughts into accessible Spanish words, drawing from multimedia forms— movie clips, short stories, and books. Sarah Corum’s math students write their own work problems for classmates to solve and express mathematical processes in sentences to clarify and justify their work. A favorite math project in Mrs. Corum’s class invites students to explain a mathematical concept in the form of a popular song lyric, creating a music video.

Each year at Mount de Sales, students write essays and research papers, progressing from exposition to argument to analysis and synthesis, until they leave MDS well prepared to write college level papers. Beginning in sixth grade, Katherine Smith teaches her students to compare and contrast academic concepts in their writing. Building on this foundation, Martha Barrett guides middle school writers through increasingly complex and varied writing, introducing research skills, descriptive and narrative writing, and literary analysis. Students write to express their ideas and beliefs. Emma Butler challenges ninth graders to identify and share their passions in This I Believe essays, and theology teachers ask students to reflect thoughtfully on their community service work, on their faith or their doubts. Students write to explore and confirm their strengths, talents, and goals. My 11th grade students write their first college essay as an English assignment, then collaborate with their college counselor and senior English teachers to revise and rewrite these vital documents. Students write to prepare for college and career success. Among our many AP course offerings are classes which focus on specific writing skills, including AP Language and Composition, AP Literature, AP World History, AP U.S. History, AP Seminar, and AP Research. In AP classes, students develop the critical thinking and analytical skills, manifested in writing assignments, which propel them to excellence in college classes. DE SALES SHEET FALL 2023

All students are expected to communicate their acquired knowledge and skills through writing. Across the curriculum, semester examinations contain sections requiring written expression. Seniors who participate in the Senior Practicum maintain a blog describing their unique experiences and accomplishments.

EXTRACURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES TO WRITE We are grateful to our generous alumna, Susan Crawford (’63), who sponsors the annual Ardmore Scholarship for student writers. Ms. Crawford motivates and inspires creative writers to submit poetry, stories, and essays, rewarding the best with MDS scholarship funds. Our school literary magazine, Page Break, offers students an opportunity to see their creative writing published. I invite you to view the student work in Page Break by turning to page 12 and scanning the QR code to see shining examples of poems, stories, and essays showcasing the work of our talented students. Student writers also compete in the GISA Literary Competition each spring, crafting personal, argumentative, and rhetorical analysis essays. We believe that strong writing skills will allow our graduates to flourish in their college studies, their professional careers, and their adult roles as active, informed citizens. A schoolwide focus on writing challenges MDS students to learn, discover, create, and persuade, forging ever deeper academic and human connections.

CELEBRATING CAVALIER SCHOLARS by Maggie Gerwig, Director of Enrollment & Career Discovery MDS has a variety of merit-based, needs-based, and qualification-based scholarships. In fact, MDS is one of the few schools in the middle Georgia area offering such a wide array of scholarship opportunities. Celebrating our students is an important part of what it means to be a Cavalier and we are highlighting a few of our many outstanding scholars.

Brittany Cardenas, Monsignor John Cuddy Scholar Brittany is a senior at Mount de Sales Academy. She joined our Cavalier community in 9th grade from St. Peter Claver Catholic School. She stays very involved at MDS participating in student council, cross country, soccer, and the annual trip to St. Francis Inn. She also regularly serves as an altar server and lectern at St. Peter Claver, her home parish. Her favorite memory from last school year was helping with the confirmation class. Brittany hopes to volunteer with younger children at church again this year. She is enjoying her time at MDS and plans to soak in one last year. When asked what she likes best about the school, Brittany shared that she loves the courses offered, and the diversity of the student body, and sees this education as a huge opportunity for her. Brittany and her family will have much to celebrate come May as she will be the first from her family to graduate from high school and, eventually, college. When reflecting on what it means to be a Cavalier, Brittany says it means “to be open-minded to others’ opinions, show respect towards others, show mercy toward, and to help even when you aren't told to and without expecting anything in return.” Monsignor John Cuddy Scholarship Fund The Knights of Columbus Council #925 established the Monsignor John Cuddy Scholarship Fund in 2004. The purpose of this fund is to honor Monsignor Cuddy (Honorary Alumnus '04) and his ministry by providing financial assistance to a deserving and practicing Catholic family.

Carter Sparks, Mercy Scholar Carter is a part of the Mount de Sales Academy junior class. He attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School and transitioned to MDS in the 7th grade. He stays very involved at MDS as a member of the wrestling team and football team. Before sports became his main focus, he also enjoyed participating in the robotics club as a middle school student. He regularly serves as an altar server at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, his home parish. Additionally, Carter is a Boy Scout and has a goal of becoming an Eagle Scout. When reflecting on what he likes best about MDS, Carter said that he loves “the challenge of the classes and finding a way to balance everything.” Carter also said that he particularly enjoys his physics and chemistry classes. During his time at Mount de Sales Academy, Carter has learned that Cavaliers are “hard-working and dedicated” and they “help others without being asked.” Mercy and McAuley Scholarships Rising 9th grade students are eligible to receive a 4-year renewable academic-based scholarship.

Zion Jones, Mike Garvin Scholar Zion Jones is new to Mount de Sales Academy this year and joins us from Sacred Heart Catholic School. When reflecting on his time at Sacred Heart Catholic School, which prepared him so well for MDS, he said, “It’s a really great school that I attended. The staff is amazing, and the school hosts a lot of fun events.” Zion is a member of our 9th grade class and is excited about his new adventure at MDS. He plans to keep an open mind, especially when choosing his extracurricular activities. When asked what he would like to try, Zion said, “I don’t know yet as there are so many options but, whatever they want me to do I’m gonna keep an open mind about it and give it a chance. If I don’t like it I’m gonna go to the next thing they want me to do and be positive about the whole situation.” He cannot wait to get to know his classmates, teachers, and coaches and hopes that the MDS community becomes his home away from home. Mike Garvin Scholarship Fund Established in 2014 to honor the legacy of long-time coach and athletic director Mike Garvin, the scholarship is awarded to an outstanding scholar-athlete.
