COVID-19 Response and Preparedness COVID-19 presented challenges for schools and families around the world. Mount de Sales was ready for this moment.

In preparation for 2020-2021, an Education Task Force comprised of administrators, staff, and teachers evaluated three critical areas for the new academic year: teaching and learning; health and safety; and constituent communications.

Systems already in place allowed for a seamless transition to a virtual learning model when campus closed.

Upgrades to these systems plus new technologies for the 2020-2021 school year have only boosted an already well-connected campus. Teachers trained for the use of new technology, researched ways to optimize online learning methodologies, and collaborated with each other to perfect instruction delivery.

Discover, Innovate, Serve In each issue of the de Sales Sheet we feature individuals from within the MDS community who embody the Academy’s mission to “discover, innovate, and serve.” This year we are proud to highlight three special scholarship winners and new Cavaliers who were awarded inaugural scholarships, focusing on these three core pillars.

POISED TO DISCOVER: SHAMIYA RAINES In partnership with Navicent Health, MDS established the Discover Scholarship for students who have a parent working at the hospital. This year’s recipient, Shamiya Raines, is the daughter of Ms. Shamel Ellison, a nurse at Navicent. Shamiya, 8th, previously attended Crawford County Middle School. Shamiya was drawn to Mount de Sales because of our academic focus and challenging learning environment. Her favorite subjects are language arts, social studies, and math. Shamiya is a strong student and athlete. She is a middle school and junior varsity softball player and aspires to be a part of our championship varsity softball team, as well as our basketball, soccer, and

track teams. Shamiya is liked and respected by her peers, is always encouraging to those around her, and loves to learn.

CHALLENGED TO INNOVATE: BAILEY KEEVER Bailey Keever, 8th, is this year’s Innovate Scholar, which is awarded to a student with a keen interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). During the Innovate Scholar Day, candidates spent several hours working on science concepts and hands-on experiments and projects with MDS science faculty. During the scholarship day, Bailey distinguished herself as a quiet leader as she solved problems and gave feedback on the tasks.

Bailey is no stranger to the MDS community—her parents, Cole and Sara Suchower Keever are 2003 MDS graduates, and she is excited to carry on the family tradition as a Cavalier.

Bailey came to MDS from Bonaire Middle School and enjoys reading, art, and traveling. She looks forward to participating in cheerleading, track, and the performing arts.

ADRIANNA ELMORE

Participants in the Serve Scholars Day were given a writing prompt about role models, community service, and fostering unity. Students also packed goody bags, which were shipped to families with active military personnel abroad. Adrianna likes Mount de Sales because of the small class sizes, the variety of courses offered, and winning sports program. Her favorite subjects are math and science, and she enjoys art and playing the piano.

As a Cavalier, Adrianna plans to play on the basketball team, get involved in clubs, and make a lot of new friends.

We welcome these outstanding students to the Cavalier family!

What is the Senior Capstone Experience?

From a very early age, I have known what I wanted to be when I grew up.

From playing pretend teacher with my Barbies at age seven to volunteering in a special education classroom at age thirteen, something about being in a classroom just clicks with me.

When I found out that MDS had a Senior Capstone program, I had no idea what that meant except you could miss school to do something of your choosing and that was enough for me.

After I met with Mrs. Corum, the faculty liaison, I realized the Senior Capstone program was so much more. The program would give

me professional and independent experience in a career in my field of interest. I was used to working with children with down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, and hearing impairments, but I had never worked with visually impaired children. Mrs. Corum had a connection with the Georgia Academy for the Blind (GAB), and I leaped at the opportunity to intern there.

I was excited for something new and unfamiliar. I was paired with Mrs. Amy Bardash, the ELA and study skills teacher at GAB. A few weeks later, I nervously prepared for my first day...

INTRODUCING FATHER CASEY We are happy to welcome Fr. Casey Cole, OFM, to Macon and Mount de Sales! Fr. Casey joins several other Franciscan Friars who are serving the Macon community through the St. Peter Claver parish.

Fr. Casey graduated from Furman University in 2011 with a degree in religious studies and a minor in poverty studies. He entered the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans) in August of 2011, made solemn profession in August of 2017, and was ordained to the priesthood in June of 2019. He was most recently assigned to the Catholic Center at the University of Georgia before being transferred to Macon.

Fr. Casey has published two books, Called: What Happens After Saying Yes to God and Let Go: Seven Stumbling Blocks to Christian Discipleship. He is the creator of two YouTube channels, and regularly gives talks throughout the country on evangelization and vocations.

Theology at MDS

THEOLOGY TEACHER KIM ANDREWS

Welcoming All Faiths Mount de Sales has been described as an “organically diverse” institution, where the shared experiences of students of different races, socioeconomic backgrounds, and even religions enriches and attracts all. Some are surprised to learn that 63% of Cavaliers are not Catholic, although our founders, the Sisters of Mercy, were intentional in the 1800s about educating students of all faith traditions. That legacy endures.

Today, preparing students for a mature life of faith remains a core value of Mount de Sales. Students take a theology class each year, which is framed around Catholic teachings and Christian beliefs. Classes are an opportunity for both intellectual and spiritual growth with the goal of strengthening each student’s faith, deepening their personal relationship with God, and developing a commitment to serve others.

Courses for juniors and seniors that delve into world religions and the Holocaust develop understanding and respect for different faith traditions.

No matter the course or individual religious backgrounds, the foundation of each class is the dignity and worth of all people.

“We are all children of God,” said Upper School theology teacher Kim Andrews, who believes it is important for students to discover the similarities among different faith traditions. She wants each of her students to know that God is always present and to experience a sense of community through faith. “When I have students select scripture that speaks to them on prayer or how God reveals himself to us and they share that scripture with the class, we experience many different perspectives, which ultimately deepens our understanding of God’s grace through each other.”

Robert Ochieng (2011), who teaches religion to eighth graders, sees our Middle School theology courses as critical to a student’s smooth transition from middle to high school.

“Students need to know who they are as a person of faith, and who they are in relationship to God is important to being a positive force in our community.”

Mr. Ochieng believes in inviting students to embark on an experiential journey to deepen their own faith.

He uses creative approaches such as reflection journaling, group skits, guided meditation to learn the art of being still, and mandala pattern drawing, which is a circular design that can have spiritual significance

to the individual. Mr. Ochieng also offers the opportunity to explore the deeper questions of faith and religious tradition with “open mic” days, where anonymous student questions are discussed. “I want MDS to be the light that attracts students to a life of faith.”

MDS is that light for many students.

Billy Chung (2019) started sixth grade at Mount de Sales with a deep curiosity about religion. “For a brief period of time I gave up [religion] completely,” said Billy when speaking to a group of donors several years ago. On a school service trip to the St. Francis Inn in Philadelphia, he realized he was encountering the “simple beauty of God” in every person he served. “When I came back to Macon, I realized that this beauty had been in my teachers and in classmates all along,” noted Billy. “I embraced my faith fully and accepted it as a valuable and challenging part of my life thanks to the opportunities that a Catholic education has given me to make mistakes, to adapt, and to grow in my faith and personal development.”

Why I Give Dianne Harper, MDS Donor and Past Parent

I

grew up in a Catholic family with three sisters and one brother. We were really Catholic in the early years, not so much later on. I learned charity at home, although I do not remember any verbal lessons, just examples. We put money in the plate on Sunday. As children, we were expected to save part of whatever money we acquired and to give part; so we did, a very little part.

Time and talents were also shared— as Girl Scout leader and Little League coach, through fundraisers at church, and Lion’s Club broom sales. Whatever parents did, kids did. My dad coached baseball so our summers revolved around the ballpark. I learned to count back change so they let me help in the concession stand. We shared our outgrown clothing and toys with a family in need. Things were not put in a box and dropped off at a donation center. We piled in the car and took the things to a family, which was always an eye-opener.

At some point in my teen years, I attended a meeting with my parents on tithing. The message I got was, give to God His due, His share, His ten percent, and He will protect you.

I wondered, was this where the Mob got the idea of paying for protection?

Evidently, I lacked the maturity to understand the whole story.

Once out on my own, I contributed to some charities, dropped money in the plate whenever I was at a service, but never had enough money. I began 8

attending St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in 1974. Six years later, I started conversations with a dear friend about tithing. She could talk the talk because she walked the walk. “Ten percent off the top,” she said. “It’s the first check.” I could do that I thought—the first check part, not the ten percent. Gradually my donations grew. I wondered if that was ten percent of gross or take-home pay. I kept hearing, “all things come

from God” but I thought, no! I earned this money. It’s mine. How did I earn it?

Oops, through my God-given talents and ability to work. Okay, maybe it is Yours.

Wrestling with these thoughts and many others over the years has allowed me to practice proportional giving, to keep moving toward the tithe, and to accept “no strings attached” giving.

Benefits of Giving through a Qualified Charitable Distribution Laura Johnson, MDS Director of Institutional Advancement

I have had the pleasure of ge�ng to know Dianne Harper over the last few years, and I have been inspired by her quiet generosity. When I asked what motivated her to continue giving to Mount de Sales (Dianne’s son, Matt Tisdale, graduated in 2006), she shared that she did not currently have a church home, but that she was committed to tithing.

Dianne wanted to tithe to MDS, and her reasons for doing so were numerous. Matt had been a student at other schools, but it was not until he arrived at MDS that she felt his needs as a student with learning differences were understood and met.

What have I learned? We are created to nurture and to give. Giving is part of the understanding of being “in God’s image.” Another fact, as I see it, is that humans need discipline or rules to follow. There is comfort and security in knowing the rules, and I consider tithing a biblical rule.

Who gets your first check? Financial priorities are demonstrated when we sit down to pay bills—to portion out our incomes—each month. Who gets the first check? Savings? Housing?

Food? Entertainment? Or giving back? Sharing. When God gets the first check, His work is your priority.

For me, when that does not happen, worry and doubt begin again.

Waiting to give until you can afford to is like waiting to have children until you can afford them. You cannot afford to not give. God blesses us daily with opportunities. Share your time, your talent, your treasure. Take advantage of opportunities. As you share, you grow. Let’s grow together.

According to Dianne, Matt had lost confidence, but blossomed when he came to MDS, and she credits the school with his success in college and in his career as a mechanical engineer. She also appreciated that Christian values were incorporated into teaching and that there was an expectation that students work to improve the community. Dianne is a retired teacher and believes in supporting quality education.

Recently, Dianne was able to give to MDS through a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), and encourages those who are eligible to do the same. If you are over age 70½* and must take your annual Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from your IRA or an inherited IRA, a QCD may be the most tax-efficient way to make a charitable gift.

The QCD reduces the taxpayer’s adjusted gross income, which could prevent an increase in Social Security taxation, an increase in Medicare premiums, or a reduction in deductible medical expenses, which is based on a percentage of the taxpayer’s adjusted gross income. Furthermore, these pre-tax contributions to an IRA, when directly transferred to a charity, are never taxed so the charity receives the full benefit of the amount donated, not just the after-tax amount.

Dianne believes a QCD gives donors better stewardship of their own money. “The QCD is a way to painlessly give more.” *With the CARES Act, changes were made to the age of requirement for RMD for tax year 2020. Please consult your tax advisor.

Literary Magazine

For decades, students have published a literary magazine sponsored by the Mount de Sales Academy English Department. It's name has changed through the years, among them: Inklings, Cavalier Cavalcade, The Hard Copy, and currently Page Break. The publica�on features original crea�ve wri�ng pieces in the form of short stories and poems as well as artwork in a variety of mediums, including digital drawings, photography, and pain�ngs.

Page Break gives Upper School students opportuni�es to see their work published, mo�vates crea�ve students, and gives them an audience for their work. Student staff members gain skills in organiza�on, management, and teamwork. They review submi�ed works and select which pieces will be published, edit wri�ng pieces, create the layout for the final copy, and publicize the magazine to their peers through videos, announcements, and flyers.

Partner in Faith Catholic NET Ministries It is estimated that more than 70% of high school graduates leave church after high school, with only half of them returning decades later. There are numerous reports as to why this statistic is so high, including relevancy in a fun and busy college/young adult life, creating a new community void of religion, and not being equipped with the tools to live a Christ-centered life with a newfound independence. In steps NET Ministries: a team of young missionaries that travel the world teaching the Gospel, studying the Word, and equipping young people with the skills to continue to grow their faith and share the Good News with others.

National Evangelization Teams (NET) was started in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis in 1981. Inspired

by Mark 1:17 which says, “Come after me, I will make you fishers of men,” NET now has more than 150 missionaries, aged 18-28, who serve one-year terms.

Mount de Sales has been fortunate enough to host a team for the past two years, leading retreats for Middle School students. Jesse Baguyo, NET team member who visited MDS this past year, got involved with NET after going through a really tough season in life.

His best friend at the time helped him get back his faith, he was confirmed, and felt called to share his very real and personal testimony with other young people. Cathy Young, another NET team

member who visited MDS, said her goal is to help kids, like the friend who helped Jesse, embrace their faith. “In today’s culture, youth grow up seeing people only take their faith seriously in their 40s and their parents’ ages,” she says. “There is a disconnect. Maybe they don’t think it’s cool; maybe they plan to ‘worry’ about it later. Our job is to let them know you can be young and cool, play sports and video games, read—you can do all of these and love God too.”

While on site at a church or school, NET is on a specialized mission for a few short days. Team members form special bonds with the students by praying, singing, and sharing testimonies, but also through skits, silly games, and working in small groups. At the end of each session they make sure to break down the messages so

According to a LifeWay research study, “young Christians are more likely to cite weightier political and spiritual concerns as pushing them away from the church, with 70 percent listing such beliefs as a reason for their departure in 2017 compared to about half (52%) 10 years before.” Jesse agrees and believes the biggest challenge is social media. “So many times, we become distracted by what is on the news or by the latest trend. We try to become someone we are not. We hear all of the bad things people say about the church and it makes young people turn away. If we can overcome what society wants us to do and listen to what God has planned for us, so many people will find a joy they have never experienced before.”

Growing up in today’s world certainly has its challenges, and NET Ministries is filling a void that many young people, Catholic youth groups, and churches are missing: energetic retreats, engaging activities, sharing of personal testimonies and experiences, and exciting praise and worship services.

NET Ministries also encourages parents, churches, and school communities to continue to work, supporting the growth of young people in their faith. Cathy suggests “ge�ng to know each student on a deeper level, using relational ministry, continuing to make the Gospel more readily available, and treating young people as equal fellow disciples of Christ.” Jesse adds, “I think if we want to have our

MARK MCMAHON AND STUDENTS COMPLETE AN AP PHYSICS LAB ASSIGNMENT; ONLINE LEARNERS JOIN IN

AP and Dual Enrollment Mount de Sales Academy’s dedication to quality curriculum and instruction has spanned three centuries. As the school advances through the 21st century, the administration has the flexibility to design a curriculum that responds to both general and individual academic needs. For example, a course in organic chemistry was added at the suggestion of alumni to better prepare graduates pursuing degrees in medicine. Furthermore, Upper School students have the opportunity to concentrate their courses and external internships to earn a diploma endorsement in one of five areas of study.

Every MDS student is presented with a rigorous curriculum that prepares them for the next step of their education. Today, academic rigor is quantified by the number of Advanced Placement (AP) and dual enrollment courses a school offers. MDS currently has 21 AP and six dual enrollment courses in addition to 19 honors level courses, and a complement of highinterest elective courses across the disciplines. For a school of our size, we offer a very robust and rigorous curriculum.

So how does a student choose between AP and dual enrollment courses as they plan their educational path? There are similarities—both are college-level courses, which can be valuable in preparing a student for future academic challenges and even earning college credit hours. There are some important differences, however.

As Emily Brown, MDS college counselor, said, “This decision, like the college selection process itself, is not about what everyone else is doing. It’s about the right fit for the student and their educational goals.”

AP courses are yearlong classes that follow a national curriculum developed by the College Board, which is appealing to highly selective colleges and universities because they can objectively assess the rigor of the course. At one time, students took AP courses primarily to earn college credit—if they scored at a certain level of proficiency on a national exam.

Today, AP courses also are taken to build a student’s resume for college admissions. For example, 95% of students who are accepted to Georgia Tech have taken AP Calculus. Colleges also have full discretion over whether and how they offer credits for AP courses once a student is enrolled.

Dual enrollment courses are semesterlong college classes, and students are dually enrolled at MDS and the college

offering the course, which is Wesleyan College in this case. While students at other schools might go to the college to take the course, MDS is committed to providing each student with our complete high school experience.

Therefore, our faculty members, who are adjunct professors at Wesleyan and have advanced degrees in the field of study, teach the courses on our campus, so that the student does not have to leave school. A student earns college credit throughout the course, and the grade they receive in the class is entered on a college transcript and becomes their initial college GPA. Students can graduate from high school with up to 18 college credit hours that are paid for by the state, thus reducing future college tuition expenses. Typically, this option is best for students who are not interested in a highly selective college as these colleges do not have an objective way to measure the rigor of courses offered through different universities.

The administration believes a firm foundation is important to successfully take on challenging college-level work.

The freshman year is spent in our regular curriculum courses as students become acclimated to high school-level work and responsibilities. Students can then take one AP course in the 10th grade and the remainder of AP

and dual enrollment courses during their junior and senior years. Students sign up for AP and dual enrollment classes after consultation with their faculty advisor. Although prerequisite courses and grades are recommended, we encourage our students to challenge themselves and customize an educational path that meets their interests and academic goals.

Beau is an excellent example of a Cavalier who had the courage and commitment to find the right fit for college. Beau is starting his freshman year (virtually) at Grinnell College in Iowa, and is the first MDS student in recent history to attend the college, which was ranked by U.S. News & World Report as #11 on the nation’s best liberal arts colleges.

Beau and his father discovered Grinnell when reading The Hidden Ivies college guide. They subsequently visited their top five favorites, and Beau felt most at home at Grinnell. He was drawn to the overall atmosphere of the school and the flexibility of the curriculum that allows students to explore their unique interests. In fact, Beau, who enjoys reading graphic novels, takes classes in Japanese science fiction and Chinese languages as a freshman.

Beau credits his MDS education with teaching him how he thinks and learns so that he can strategize on class selections and mentally prepare for exams. When he suffered a concussion and was out of school for several weeks, he appreciated the flexibility to retake exams and adjust the workload while he recovered. “The teachers understood what I was going through, and MDS handled my situation like a caring family.”

Leaving a Legacy The Mount de Sales family wishes well Suzanne Webb, who retired after the 2019-20 academic year.

“At MDS I stepped into my dream job,” remembered Suzanne Webb, who retired after ten years of teaching at Mount de Sales, the last four spent leading the Upper School performing arts program. “No matter how tired I am from teaching, I come alive when I’m on stage directing.”

Suzanne’s career at MDS began as a language arts teacher in the Middle School, where she also directed the middle school plays and musicals. “I started with Shakespeare, but only the funny ones,” said Suzanne. She used Shake Hands with Shakespeare, a resource that breaks the complex plays into manageable pieces for younger students and helps them to enjoy classics they might otherwise have assumed were boring.

In fact, Suzanne often selected plays with students in mind. When directing Upper School theatre productions, she chose plays to showcase especially the senior actors’ strengths and talents, which helped those students who were

hoping to earn scholarships to study performing arts in college.

“It is always about the kids, and what experience the kids have. I often divided parts and lines so that more students could act.” Her philosophy with theatre productions is inclusivity, which she sees as living out Christ’s teachings. Suzanne believes that every child who wants to participate should be able to, and only rarely did she cut a student from a production. According to Suzanne, theatre teaches team building, and everyone—whether the job is set design, lighting, or acting —must work together and rely on each other. “Everyone learns they are important to the production.”

Former student Molly Craig (2020) notes that Suzanne has been more than a teacher but also a close friend.

“I have never met someone who is as invested in her students and totally dedicated to each individual student because she truly loves them, not just a teacher-student love, but something deeper,” said Molly. “From staying with us in the theatre until 11 o’clock until we got the choreography down, or using her free period to give me and my friends college application advice, she fully gave herself to her profession.

woman and has lived her faith during her time at Mount de Sales. I am forever grateful for Mrs. Webb as an educator, director, and friend. Because I knew her, I have been changed for good, and Mount de Sales will be a better place because she has been there.”

Prior to teaching at MDS, Suzanne worked at Sacred Heart Catholic School and then in Houston County Public Schools, but she wanted to return to Catholic education since she was educated at Catholic schools and believes in the mission. In fact, she hopes to deepen her commitment to Christ’s teachings in retirement and feels a call to serve the less fortunate and address the manifestations of hatred in our world. Suzanne also looks forward to continuing her involvement in community theatre and to supporting Georgia Olson as she begins directing productions for MDS. “I will really miss the students and the friendships with colleagues at MDS.”

FACES Class of 2020

STEPHANIE PIERSON

The Sisters of Mercy Award is given to the senior who most demonstrates the values of the Sisters of Mercy by reverencing the dignity of each person, creating a spirit of hospitality, and pursuing the integrity of word and deed in his or her daily life.

As an 18-year-old, Stephanie Pierson describes herself as a “really curious” person, which has prompted many of her MDS and life experiences. Stephanie ran cross-country for five years, participated in Model UN, Mock Trial, and the Environmental Club. She graduated with highest honors and as valedictorian.

As the child of an educator and a pastor, Stephanie’s love for learning led her to take twelve AP classes and several independent studies including African American Studies, Eco-Theology, and AP European History. These three classes helped develop Stephanie’s passion for defending vulnerable populations. Coach Duane Hunter, who taught Stephanie in three AP classes, noted that Stephanie’s questions and insights in class were stimulating and perceptive. “She kept teachers on their toes because she so enjoyed social studies and was always reading. Stephanie sees things that she believes need change and works to bring about that change. She is not going to sit by idly waiting for other people to act.”

One of Stephanie’s most well-known accomplishments came outside the classroom when she was chosen to participate in Teen Jeopardy in the summer of 2019. According to Stephanie, she tested for the show three times before she was chosen for an interview which led to her ultimate selection as a contestant.

Stephanie spent significant time this summer attending Black Lives Matter protests in Macon and Atlanta as well as time in nature, hiking at places such as Amicolola Falls and Providence Canyon. Stephanie attends the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is a member of the Honors Program. She plans to major in history, minor in Spanish and philosophy, and eventually attend law school and work in public service.

The Monsignor John Cuddy Spirit of Service Award honors the senior who most exemplifies the same gentle nature, admirable courage, and deep religious commitment of the late Monsignor Cuddy. The recipient shares Monsignor Cuddy’s legacy to open the doors of faith for others and reach out to those in the local community. This year’s recipient is Sarah Breitenbach, the youngest of five sisters, all of whom attended Mount de Sales over the past thirteen years. Sarah was voted “Most Friendly” by her classmates and has made a positive impact on the MDS community as an athlete, musician, and dancer. As a senior, Sarah led the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, cheered, and continued her dance career at Madison Dance Studio three to four times a week.

Sarah was especially moved to receive this award as her first memories of Macon include Monsignor Cuddy. The Breitenbachs moved to Macon from Ohio in 2003. Monsignor Cuddy served as a greeter at St. Joseph Catholic Church and was one of the first people the Breitenbachs met as new residents of Middle Georgia. Sarah eventually started first grade at St. Joseph’s Catholic School and became a Cavalier in seventh grade.

Mrs. Georgia Olson, Upper School faculty, describes Sarah as one of the kindest and most positive, spirited students she has ever encountered. "Sarah truly embodies the values of the Sisters of Mercy. Sarah always had a smile on her face and gave her best, no matter what challenges she faced. She always showed true kindness and respect to all others she encountered, and was a joy to have in the classroom.”

Sarah is a freshman at Georgia Tech, where she plans to major in business administration. She continues her passion for dance and school spirit as a member of the elite Goldrush Dance Team.

BENJAMIN SMITH

The Chester W. Pierce Distinguished Service Award is given to the senior who is dedicated to the Academy's mission, generously gives freely of his or her time, and motivates others to make significant commitments to the school.

Benjamin Smith was this year’s recipient, and he said that receiving the award was “extra special because I got to know Coach Pierce from his time as a substitute teacher and my work as a Cavalier Ambassador.”

Benjamin Smith’s name is practically synonymous with recycling on the MDS campus. He was a founding member of the Eco-Team and helped spearhead campus recycling efforts over his four years in the Upper School. Benjamin raised awareness about the impact recycling can have on the environment and credits this passion to Mr. Paul Midkiff. This passion translated to an internship with the Macon Water Authority during his senior year.

Mr. Midkiff said Benjamin always made time to stop by his office just to check in. “I was always appreciative of those visits; I was always in a better mood after talking with Benjamin.” As an alum, Benjamin remains in contact with Mr. Midkiff—emailing and checking in on the newest volunteers’ recycling efforts.

In addition to helping the MDS community, Benjamin served on two mission trips in high school: one to the St. Francis Inn in Philadelphia with MDS and one to Puerto Rico with his youth group from Vineville Baptist Church.

Benjamin was an active thespian, securing a role in every spring musical and participating in two of the One Act competitions. Benjamin played varsity tennis for five years and was partnered with his twin brother for doubles matches.

Benjamin attends Mercer University and plans to major in biology or environmental science.

The Medal of Honor is the highest award given to a senior. The recipient epitomizes the spirit of Mount de Sales in his or her daily life and demonstrates a sense of compassion, mercy, and justice at the school, at church, and in the community.

Sydney Iuliucci attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School for elementary school and is a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. It was here that she met Mr. Patrick Tunnell, who at the time led the youth group and is now an Upper School theology teacher. “Sydney really deserved the Medal of Honor because she is the model of what it is to be a Cavalier,” said Mr. Tunnell. “She goes beyond being just a good student, she is actually the model of a really good person. Sydney is going to do really great things for this world and for God.” One of the defining experiences of Sydney’s high school career was serving on a week-long mission trip at St. Francis Inn in Philadelphia. According to Sydney, volunteering at the inn opened her eyes as she saw people struggle more than she could have ever imagined. She specifically recalls meeting several patrons who told her not to forget about them, and she hasn't. That week of volunteering became one of the most memorable weeks of her life.

Sydney was a three-sport athlete for most of her time at MDS; she played volleyball, soccer, and basketball and loved being part of a team, engaging in competition, and seeing people in the stands. Sydney began playing soccer at age three and credits sports with breaking her out of her shell freshman year.

Sydney attends the University of Georgia and is a member of Delta Zeta sorority.

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Citizenship Award recognizes and rewards individuals who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism in their homes, schools, and communities.

This year's recipient is Roman Vadini, who considers good citizenship to be important, and he hopes to remain a lifelong learner and find ways to do something good for others each day.

Roman came to MDS in the sixth grade from St. Joseph’s Catholic School, following in his sister Aurora’s (2013) footsteps. While at MDS, he especially enjoyed STEM courses, so it is no surprise that he is a freshman at Georgia Tech. Roman is studying mechanical engineering and hopes to pursue an integrated bachelor’s and master’s program.

“I loved mathematics, physics, and computer science, but my favorite teacher at MDS was Mr. Patrick Tunnell,” said Roman. “I took his Faith and Reason course and participated in an independent study in my senior year, where we went in depth into early Christian ethics and metaphysics. Wondering about the mysteries of life was awesome.” “Roman is a gift to anyone lucky enough to be around him,” noted Mr. Tunnell, Upper School theology teacher. “I have no doubt that he will make a huge impact on the world, and I count myself blessed to have been a part of his story.”

Roman distinguished himself academically as well as in extracurricular activities while at MDS. He was captain of varsity wrestling, leading the team to multiple state competitions. Roman also was involved in student council and National Honor Society; he earned the rank of Eagle Scout and continues his commitment to scouting as scoutmaster for Troop 10 in Macon.

Caroline LaBorde (1972) retired after 35 years of teaching special education in Bibb and Monroe counties in Georgia. She volunteered for 20 years as a local coordinator for Special Olympics; she continues volunteer work as the local coordinator for Special Olympics Georgia Sailing.

Caroline also volunteers with a school in Trouin, Haiti, teaching English and training teachers.

Tara Thomason (1977) has been employed by Nassau County School Board in Florida since 1988. In 1995, she started a therapeutic program

for Severely Emotionally Disturbed (SED) students. The program served all SED students in Nassau County.

For eight years, she was the program coordinator for what became Students that are Responsible, Respec�ul, and Successful (STARRS). For the past 15 years, she has taught middle school Emotionally Behaviorally Disabled (EBD) students. Tara has been recognized as Teacher of the Year once and nominated twice. She is also a youth mental health first aid instructor. She plans to retire in 2023 and to enjoy life on Amelia Island!

ust before Thanksgiving of 2019, the Mount de Sales community received sad news. One of their beloved family members had died. Michael Vullo left this world peacefully in the early morning of November 25, 2019. Within hours, social media was abuzz with fond reminiscences from friends, classmates, students, alumni, faculty, and former colleagues.

Students will remember Mr. Vullo’s tradition of strolling through the library on Halloween, smiling jovially, while passing around a basket of trick-or-treat candy. It was the only day the strict “no Michael Vullo graduated from Mount de food in the library” rule was waived.

When Michael retired from the Mount de Sales faculty in 2014, the Father John Cuddy Middle School building was just before opening. Here students, faculty, friends, and all others who visited the school could learn from the plaques and pictures there about this treasured member of the MDS family. Appropriately, his own favorite quote from Chaucer is among the wall hangings.

The Mount de Sales family will miss the “personal” icon who “would gladly learn, and teach.” Michael Vullo’s quick wit, his unending patience, his thorough explanations made him a beloved teacher and colleague. His memorable responses, his slow, precise, sonorous voice, and infectious laugh are never to be forgotten by those who knew him. Quiet and kind, Michael Vullo’s intelligent influence will continue among us. He was, indeed, the finest of gentlemen.

St. Joseph’s School, recognized as the first unit of the public school system in Bibb County, was established in 1872 when the Sisters of Mercy worked with the newly formed Board of Education.

Today, the school is also recognized as the first parochial school in Macon.
