NAVIGATING NOVEMBER As the calendar flips to November, we find ourselves at the doorstep of the holiday season and the much-anticipated end-ofyear rush. This final stretch of the year is often a whirlwind of activities, festivities, and a surge of work commitments. Senior students will also be contemplating the next chapter of their lives - one of our Pharmacy Students talks about what it’s like to study Pharmacy on page 3.
End of Year Hustle
The end of the year can be a busy and overwhelming time for many people, with holiday preparations, work deadlines, and personal responsibilities piling up. To manage this hectic period, it can help to establish a routine to stay organised and minimise stress.
Many pharmacy programs provide students with opportunities for hands-on learning through internships and part-time work, allowing them to apply classroom knowledge to real-world situations. James Cook University (Cairns/ Townsville/Mackay) have an extensive program for clinical placement in Cairns and our surrounding communities.
To prevent burnout, it's essential to avoid overloading your schedule. Realistically assess what you can accomplish in a day or week, and jot down your goals for added motivation. Include self-care as one of your goals, making sure you prioritize adequate sleep, healthy eating, and activities that promote relaxation and rejuvenation.
At Alive Pharmacy we love offering students the opportunity to work or engage in internships in the field of pharmacy while they pursue their studies. With 8 store locations, we can accommodate a flexible working environment so students can bridge the gap between theory and practice.
Divide tasks into smaller, more manageable steps, regardless of their size or complexity. This approach enables you to concentrate on one step at a time, keeping you on track. Additionally, utilising time management techniques such as focused intervals with short breaks can enhance productivity and alleviate feelings of overwhelm.
Internships can be especially rewarding. Students get to work alongside our team of professionals, learn about the latest developments in the pharmaceutical industry, and develop a deeper understanding of patient care. These experiences not only enhance their resumes but also help them make more informed career decisions. In this issue of our Live+ magazine we also discuss how to navigate the busy end of year period which can sometimes lead to burnout. Burnout is more than just feeling tired or stressed; it’s a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion. When we experience chronic stress our bodies release stress hormones like cortisol, which in excess can weaken the immune response. Maintaining a healthy immune system is important during the lead up to the festive season and large social gatherings. A balanced diet, staying hydrated, getting 7-9 hours of sleep, and regularly exercising all help maintain health and reduce stress. In addition, you could introduce vitamin D, probiotic, vitamin C and zinc supplements to your diet. These are all great for boosting the immune system and gut function. Wishing everyone a safe and happy lead-up to the Christmas season. Good luck to graduating senior school students who may be anticipating their university acceptances, starting traineeships, or entering the workforce. I also want to give a shout out to our current cohort of JCU pharmacy students who have worked really hard this year.

SET REALISTIC GOALS
2 DIVIDE TASKS INTO SMALLER STEPS
Did you know? THE POMODORO TECHNIQUE IS A TIME MANAGEMENT METHOD It is based on high effort work for 25-minutes, followed by a 5-minute break.
3 PRIORITISE TASKS Create a list of tasks in order of their urgency and importance. Prioritising your tasks will enable you to manage your time effectively, meet deadlines, and reduce the stress associated with high-priority items. For example, if you're aware that Christmas shopping tends to stress you out, tackle it early and check it off your list to proactively avoid additional stress. Planning ahead is a key strategy for reducing stress and staying organised. 4 CREATE A SCHEDULE Using a planner or digital reminders is beneficial for completing daily or weekly tasks. Schedule specific times for work, personal commitments, family time, workouts, and grocery shopping. Reminders are effective in preventing your brain from feeling overwhelmed. According to research and author George Miller, our central memory can retain only about 5 to 7 items. Staying organized reduces clutter and enhances mental clarity. 5 SET BOUNDARIES Learn to say no to extra commitments or responsibilities that could needlessly burden you with stress. Reflect on your priorities and conduct self-assessment at the end of the day to realign yourself with your achievable goals and intentions for the coming year. 6 CELEBRATE ACHIEVEMENTS Positive reinforcement is a powerful tool to enhance motivation and boost morale. Consider rewarding yourself once you've completed tasks on your list, especially those you might not be looking forward to. Whether it's treating yourself to a meal out or something new for yourself, a reward serves as an incentive to keep you motivated and dedicated to tackling your to-do tasks.
The end of the year is also a time where senior high school students are graduating. Good luck to all the year 12 students navigating university acceptances, apprenticeships, gap years or other pathways.

FIVE QUICK QUESTIONS WITH SHYLEE PAGLIARI Shylee is a Pharmacy Student at James Cook University, Co-Chair of the JCU Pharmacy Student Association, an Executive Director for the National Pharmacy Students Association, and is a part-time Pharmacy Assistant at Alive Pharmacy. Why did you choose to study pharmacy? A career in pharmacy is such a rewarding pathway with so many opportunities, I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to give something back to their community and improve the lives of so many people. What motivated you to pursue a career in pharmacy? I have always loved chemistry and felt very strongly about helping others and giving back to the community. Studying pharmacy allows me to have the best of both worlds as it is very academically demanding while also giving me a chance to see the direct impact I have on peoples lives every day. How do you find working and studying at the same time? Balancing full time university with a part-time role definitely keeps me busy, however I am so grateful to be working within the profession I am studying.
Being able to spend time learning and talking with the Alive pharmacists, I am able to constantly develop both my knowledge and practical skillset, which I can directly apply to my studies. Alive has always given me so much support and flexibility throughout my studies. They are always very considerate when it comes to exam time and understand that studying is a priority. What have you gained from your experience working at Alive? Working with Alive has boosted my confidence and communication skills. The day-to-day interactions with our patients and between coworkers has taught me so many lessons I will continue to use in my future practice. Do you have any fun stories or memories since working at Alive? Without a doubt! I have made so many incredible memories and friends with my co-workers, both inside and out of the workplace. Some of my favourite memories have been travelling with the Alive team to attend the Australian Pharmacy Professional Conference. It was a wonderful experience with great opportunities for clinical and product knowledge, networking with other students from different universities, and a lot of fun!

Have common sense, PICK THE RIGHT SCENT!
Choosing the perfect fragrance for yourself or as a gift loved one can be quite the handful. Literally! There’s so many to different scents to choose from, you’ll eventually narrow them down to a few and then pick a favourite amongst the crowd. Let’s get to know your scents so you have a better sense of which to pick.
Fragrance Notes (aka the scent layer) Like an onion has a lot of layers, so does a fragrance (however, fragrances smell a lot better than onion do!). The three main layers of a fragrance are categorized into: top notes, middle notes and base notes. •
Top Notes: last for 5-15 minutes

Middle Notes: last for 20-60 minutes
•
Base Notes: last for up to 6 hours
Why is this important? When you first spray a perfume, you’ll detect the top notes. These will fade quickly and linger for only a short time (5-15 minutes). These transition smoothly into middle notes, then into base notes. The perfume sinks into your skin and blends with your natural scent to create an aroma that sticks around longer. So how do you choose the right fragrance? It comes down to what fragrance note you might be interested in: floral, citrus, woody, or musk.
