Are you ready to put an extremely wet April behind you and get out into the great NQ outdoors to breathe the fresh air, enjoy the cooler weather and squeeze in some exercise? I certainly am!

This months edition of LIVE+ centres around getting physical and delves in to how your local Alive Pharmacy can support you in this.

Our staff throughout the Alive group are passionate about Sports Nutrition. Keeping your body balanced with fuel, salt and water in the NQ heat and humidity is a constant challenge and every person has different requirements. Whether you are an athlete training 7 days a week, going for a trail walk, mountain biking or heading out on the water for the day, you need to ensure that you are equipped with everything you need.

This may involve: + Fuelling up beforehand with magnesium, water or salts eg. Endura Performance Fuel + Taking portable nutrition with you that is easily absorbed by the gut while exercising eg. Clif bars and gels + Ensuring your body has all it requires to support muscle growth while training eg. VPA Whey Protein Supplement (I personally like the Rainbow Icecream flavor) + Some basic first aid requirements – particularly essential for those mountain bikers that we often have visit the pharmacy post tumble with grazes, cuts and sometimes infections

LETS GET PHYSICAL GOAL SETTING

Life during a pandemic has hit us all differently. It has affected our jobs, lifestyle, and health. Some not so positive affects and others have found new focus and purpose.

A lot of us have lost motivation towards the goals we usually set for ourselves. Some return of normalcy is on the horizon this year, allowing us to look at our goals a little differently compared to the beginning of the pandemic.

Here are some goal setting tips for those wanting to get more physical, whilst also addressing goals for studying and other work-related tasks.

Primary Goals

These concrete targets are the easiest to articulate. ‘I want to set a new bike Personal Best’.

These goals are primary or measurable goals.

It is important when setting these goals that they are reasonable and fair. Sit down and be honest with yourself.

“Are you really capable of running a sub-4-hour IRONMAN marathon if you haven’t run since last March?”

Try to land goals that fall somewhere between possibility and pushing yourself.

+ Water! We are lucky that our local councils support us with water bubblers in common walking areas. Try taking a hydration pack with you if you are hiking or biking in a location without easy access to drinking water We are so lucky to live in one of the most beautiful locations in the world, where the rainforest meets the reef. May is the perfect time of year to get out amongst it, absorb some sunshine (an important booster to Vitamin D levels) and get active!

Secondary Goals

These are also called “contingency goals”. These goals may not be your main goal, but they add to it.

“Face every challenge that comes along with calm”.

These ‘add on’ goals need two things to thrive: a plan and accountability. In the example above, to achieve ‘calm’ you could start listening to meditation podcasts to help deal with your stress.

Last-level Goals

These types of goals are not the type you always have to indulge in.

For example, “Say the wheels come off completely during your race and your goals evaporate before you”. Your ‘last-level’ goal would be to just finish – get across the line.

Write down your goals. This will help you articulate your goals and help you define which category it falls into. Whether it’s a mental goal like ‘not quitting’ or physical like ‘getting stronger or working on mobility. It is something to keep in mind if all else fails and you still want to have that feeling of accomplishment.

Hair grows naturally however some may have it in excess due to genetics, certain medications such as steroids, higher levels of certain hormones, or polycystic ovarian syndrome. There are several options available to you to remove unwanted hair.

Best for legs, arms and facial hair. However, it can cause ingrown hairs, especially in the pubic region.

Depilatory creams are better known as Hair Removal Creams, which are available for purchase off the shelf. There are various types so it’s important to read the label and ensure you are using the right one for your chosen area of hair removal.

Ingredients in the hair removal cream dissolve the hair shaft. Using it improperly, for example leaving it on the area too long, may cause skin burns. If you have sensitive skin it’s best to test the cream on a small area before proceeding with a larger application.

Laser hair reduction is one of the longest lasting hair removal options out there. It’s best to have a professional perform this procedure who is highly trained and knowledgeable. You will generally need a minimum of four treatments, four to six weeks apart.

A laser beam or light pulse works to destroy the hair bulb, which can be slightly painful during the procedure. After treatment you cannot expose the area to sun as it will further irritate your skin and impact the results. Laser hair removal is more effective on darker hair.

Treating ingrown hairs

Gently wash and exfoliate around the ingrown hair to help the hair return to the surface of the skin. You can also use a cream specifically formulated for treating ingrown hairs. Usually, they’ll help reduce the redness and irritation as well as prevent future ingrown hairs.

HOT WAXING

PLUCKING

Hot waxing can be performed at home or in a professional salon. While it’s usually a safe, efficient and long-lasting form of hair removal, the wax can be messy and harmful if heated too much. Ingrown hairs are another issue to watch out for after waxing. Waxing sensitive areas where any prescription acne cream is applied is also not recommended.

Plucking or tweezing can be quite painful and time consuming. It’s a good option if you only have a few hairs to remove.

This option is not recommended for larger areas, but is perfect for eyebrows and rogue hairs. Never underestimate the power of a good quality tweezer either. Slanted tweezers are the best for stubborn hairs, while ones with pointed tips are great for precision.

SUMMER SURF WOMENS PROGRAM 2021 The rebranded and revitalised 2020-2021 Surf Woman of the Year is a new look program aiming to provide more opportunities to both the clubs and their female trailblazers. Surf Woman of the Year is a celebration of the most passionate, talented, and hardworking women in our organisation. The program seeks to engage the most capable women from surf lifesaving clubs across Queensland and develop their skills and experience to further their future careers both within and outside the surf lifesaving movement. The program connects women from across the state to build a powerful alumni network, as well as forming some lifelong friendships.

Zara is a proud CSLSC member of the State's Surf Woman Program and an ambassador for 2019-2020. Zara was proud of the improvement in the uptake of female membership in her club, from 44% female representation to over 51%. Her integral leadership, training roles within the club and passion for the sport sees Zara presenting the club again this season.

YOUR LOCAL VOLUNTEER SURF LIFESAVERS, ON PATROL Surf lifesaving exists to save lives.

Each year our local surf lifesaving clubs provide resources and vital assistance to both local and visiting beachgoers in our community.

These selfless men, women and young people give their time freely to help maintain the SLSQ’s mission to achieve zero preventable deaths in Queensland waters.

At Cairns SLSC Palm Cove our patrols are there to help.

They provide visitors with local knowledge and safety advice of the area, warn of hazards and dangers, deliver first aid if required and are trained in beach surveillance, communications and rescue, as well as resuscitation.

Stay safe this season by always swimming between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches and following lifesavers’ instructions.

FIRST AID In the sad event that something does go wrong while you’re visiting a patrolled beach, our lifesavers are on the spot, trained and ready to assist.

Our volunteer patrol members have either their SRC (Surf Rescue Certificate) or their Bronze Medallion (as a basic requirement, many have many higher qualifications). All surf lifesavers have completed their basic First Aid Course.

First aid knowledge saves lives in everyday situations. At Cairns SLSC Palm Cove we have dedicated, highly qualified and motivated volunteer educators that provide age specific First Aid and CPR training to members of all ages.

BONDI RESCUE ‘MAXI’ COMING TO CAIRNS Trent Maxwell or ‘Lifeguard Maxi’ is the youngest ever professional lifeguard to work at Australia’s famous Bondi Beach. Starring as lovable, Lifeguard Maxi, his sense of fun and instinct to look out for others has shone through and he is arguably one of the most popular personalities on the show. Maxi is also an author releasing his ‘Maxi the Lifeguard’ fictional children’s book series for children 8 to 12 years. These books educate and entertain with a goal to saving young lives and are full of valuable lessons on water safety, heatstroke, and DRS ABCD so children can learn as they read.
