SPRING IS HERE! September is my favourite month of the year, the sun is shining, the birds are singing and the ocean is great for swimming. It’s time to have fun in the sun and enjoy everything nature has to offer … … Until you feel that sneeze start to brew. For some of us, spring is tied to asthma and allergy and in northern Australia, our driest months of the year are from June to September. These months are when we see an increase of asthma and allergy sufferers visit their local Alive Pharmacy, seeking help for the symptoms of these annoying conditions.

Our feature article this month focuses on one of the more serious allergic reactions known as anaphylaxis. This severe reaction can be life threatening and needs to be treated as a medical emergency. Specific symptoms have been highlighted in our article, however, anyone with difficulty breathing or swelling of tongue and throat should be identified immediately as a potential sufferer. This is especially important if the person’s come into contact with an allergen known to trigger this condition.

Adrenaline is the first line of treatment for anaphylaxis. The good news is sufferers now have a choice of treatment available with the new ‘Anapen’ released this September. Those who have had to use an Epipen or carry it around ‘just in case’ will be pleased to know the Anapen has a longer expiry and an easier activation of the adrenaline shot, only requiring the push of a red button to use.

In conjunction with World Pharmacist Day on 25 September, it is great to see COVID-19 vaccinations able to be administered in all our Alive Pharmacies. For many years pharmacists have consistently been named among the five most trusted professionals. Their ability to provide front line advice and immediate response to health issues is a true testament to the pharmacy spirit. All pharmacists receive the same training as your local GP or nurse to administer COVID-19 vaccinations.

It’s that time again! The flowers will be in bloom, along with pollen, and those seasonal allergies. There are various types of allergies and different triggers for different people. For most, these allergies are harmless. There are also those who can react in a more severe way with potentially life-threatening allergies. This is called anaphylaxis. Here are some ways you can recognise anaphylaxis, what the first line of treatment is, and how to manage it.

Symptoms Anaphylaxis should always be treated as a medical emergency. The reaction occurs after being exposed to an allergen like certain foods, insects, or medicines.

Symptoms of anaphylaxis can include any of the following: +

Difficult or noisy breathing

Difficulty talking or a hoarse voice

+

Wheeze or persistent cough

+

Swelling of the tongue

+

Swelling or tightness in the throat

+

Persistent dizziness and/or collapse

+

Pale and floppy body (young children)

The Cause It is important to help identify the cause.

Writing down a list of foods or medicines consumed that day would help along with any exposure to insects. This will also help exclude conditions that can sometimes be confused with anaphylaxis. If an allergy is suspected, it may be followed by an allergy test like a blood test that is allergen specific.

Treatment Adrenaline is the first line of treatment for anaphylaxis. Adrenaline works to rapidly reverse the effects of anaphylaxis.

Autoinjectors of adrenaline contain a single, fixed dose of adrenaline. They have been designed so that

LIVING WITH anaphylaxis Having anaphylaxis doesn’t mean your life is over.

Many people impacted have close to normal lives, even if they have a life-threatening allergic reaction. You may feel alone, overwhelmed or even angry when first diagnosed. There is help and support available.

When you have a dry scalp, your skin becomes irritated and flakes off. Whereas dandruff causes too much oil on your scalp, and this causes skin cells to build up and then shred.

Dirty hair does not cause dandruff – But if you don’t wash it often enough the oily build up will contribute to the flakes.

Dry scalp can be caused by cold, dry air, contact dermatitis caused by a product like shampoo or styling product, or older age.

The main cause of dandruff is seborrheic dermatitis. This turns skin oily, red, and scaly.

Often a fungus called malassezia triggers dandruff. This fungus usually lives on your scalp, however some people have too much of it.

You can ask your pharmacist for advice on which product will best suit your dandruff condition.
