TIS THE SEASON! It’s that time of year again. School is finishing, holidays are upon us and just like that we have cycled through another 12 months. Our fabulous Alive Pharmacy teams have been busy helping keep you all happy and healthy during 2021 and will continue to be there for you in 2022. December’s edition of Live+ covers many topics and products which you will find handy over the Christmas and NY period. We specifically delve into prevention and treatments for heartburn/ reflux, summer skin care tips, and our own unique version of the Twelve Days of Christmas. You might find these ideas help throughout the busy holiday season. Eat a healthy breakfast Don’t skip your morning meal! A strong, nutritious breakfast is vital to keep our digestive and immune system supported throughout the holidays. Eating well during this time can also help fight off any weight gain that may occur, reducing the risk of overindulging on all the sweet treats around. Drink plenty of water Dehydration is common during the holiday season with all that socialising, swimming, heat, travel, (and sometimes alcohol consumption). A touch of lemon, lime, grapefruit and mint in your water can encourage you to drink the minimum 2L per day. Exercise No matter how hard we try to avoid it, it is essential that we make exercise part of everyday life – even when we are on holidays! Remember to keep active on your days off. That doesn’t necessarily mean you have to hit the gym – bike riding, swimming, SUP and hiking are fun alternatives you might enjoy. Sleep Getting a good night’s sleep is fundamental to keeping our immune system healthy and happy. It keeps everything from weight gain to skin damage and stress levels right down, which all leads to a healthier body overall. Keep your hands clean We are exposed to much more germs during the holiday season compared to any other time of year and we often forget they can be harmful to our health. With borders opening up, it’s even more important to get into the habit of regularly washing our hands. Wishing you all a safe and happy Christmas and Holiday Season. Bring on 2022!

Love ya guts THESE HOLIDAYS It’s the season for food, drinks, and celebrating with friends and family. We can get a little carried away and consume more than we normally would. Then we start to feel that burning sensation in our chest along with a bitter taste in our throats. You guessed it: heartburn. Let’s not let it get in the way of festivities. What is heartburn? Heartburn is commonly described as a burning sensation in your chest, accompanied by a bitter taste in your mouth or throat. These symptoms can worsen after a large meal or when lying down. You can generally treat these symptoms at home. If heartburn becomes frequent it can make it difficult to eat or swallow. This could be a sign of a more serious medical condition.

Causes Typically, when the contents from your stomach come back up into your oesophagus it causes heartburn. Your oesophagus carries liquids and foods from your mouth to your stomach. There is a ring of muscles that connects your oesophagus to your stomach. It is referred to as the cardiac or lower oesophageal sphincter. When the sphincter is working correctly it should be closing when food leaves the oesophagus and enters your stomach. When the lower oesophageal sphincter becomes weakened, this can lead to your stomach’s contents leaking back into your oesophagus. Stomach acids can irritate the oesophagus and cause the symptoms of heartburn. Heartburn is common during pregnancy due to a hormone called progesterone which can cause your sphincter to relax. Other lifestyle choices can worsen heartburn symptoms like smoking, being overweight, consuming caffeine, eating spicy foods, or lying down straight after eating. Some medicines can worsen heartburn symptoms like aspirin or ibuprofen.

+Quick fact Peppermint may soothe an upset stomach, but can also make your heartburn worse. It’s a bit of a catch-22.

When should you seek professional help about heartburn? It is relatively normal experience heartburn on the odd occasion. However, if you experience heartburn more than twice a week or it doesn’t improve with treatment it is time to seek professional help. Heartburn can occur alongside other gastrointestinal conditions like ulcers.

Heartburn is NOT associated with a heart attack People with heartburn may be concerned they’re having a heart attack as the symptoms can be similar. If you’re having a heart attack, check if you have the following: • Severe chest pain • Difficulty breathing • Jaw pain • Arm pain

Treatments The most common treatment for heartburn is antacids, to reduce your stomach’s acid production. Antacids can have a side effect of constipation or have a laxative effect. Be sure to use as directed on the packaging – you don’t want to have any back door mishaps on top of dealing with heartburn.
