How is it November already? The kids are in the final stretch of the school year and Christmas holidays are just around the corner. Our fabulous Alive Pharmacy team will be helping to keep you healthy in this busy final stretch of 2022.

Summer is coming, and so is the heat. Our stores from Cooktown to Townsville recently experienced a heat wave that affected most of north Queensland.

The start of summer is usually when we see people getting back into their fitness regime. If you want to be active outdoors, my advice is to choose an activity within your ability and comfort zone.

It’s important to stay within your limits to avoid dehydration, heat stroke, or injury. Exercise in the morning, before the heat rises, and stay sun smart during the hotter times of the day. Check the UV Index before heading out. When it’s higher than three, always wear sunscreen. Be conscious of changes to your skin and book a skin check to assess any abnormalities.

Last month, the State Government announced the North Queensland Community Pharmacy Scope of Practice Pilot will go ahead late in 2023. Pharmacists will undergo 12 months of extra university training so that they can treat patients for everyday health conditions. This could include moderate acne, impetigo, ear or skin infections, and atopic dermatitis. This is a great step for patient care in our community. Our team is excited to be part of this trial, bringing Australia in line with many other countries.

The Pharmacy Assistant National Conference was held at the end of last month. Attendees heard from motivational speakers and met suppliers from many different companies. This trade expedition is just one of many that showcase the latest innovation in products and services to our pharmacy staff.

November 26th will see the start of school holidays, and December will see an influx of visitors. Keep your family healthy and vaccinated this summer. Bookings for COVID, flu, and whooping cough vaccinations are open online, and walk-ins are welcome in selected stores.

Summer is almost here, so you might be thinking about getting back into shape or smashing some personal goals. It can be hard to find the motivation and methods that work but there’s lots of advice online and plenty of supplements to choose from.

An oldie but a goldie – Endura Rehydration

We’ve talked a lot lately about the importance of hydration. It’s getting hotter, so we lose electrolytes much faster when we exercise. During the marathon and cycling season, we see a lot of uptakes in our rehydration supplements. You can use them before, during and after exercise to refuel your energy and lost essential vitamins. Depending on your preferred intake, you can add a powder to your water to accelerate rehydration or munch on a jelly-like liquid. Endura Hydration is an old favourite.

PROTEIN SUPPLEMENTATION (WPI)

Active people who exercise regularly will often have increased protein requirements that can be tricky to meet from a general wholefood diet. That’s where whey protein isolate (WPI) comes into play.

It’s a dairy-based protein supplement that has been filtered specifically to isolate the whey protein in dairy products. WPI products have a high percentage of total protein with a low carbohydrate and fat content, making it a perfect recovery tool to supplement wholefood diets.

The nutritional value of a protein source depends on its amino acid content, with WPI considered one of the best. WPI contains high amounts of essential amino acids, enhancing our ability to create muscle.

And it’s a convenient way of increasing protein intake.

Look for a WPI product with a high protein percentage in the ingredients list.

Above 90 per cent is best.

Current research tells us when we have protein is jus as important as how much. A 20-30g source of protein every three hours, or within one hour of exercise can increase our ability to recover or build lean muscle mass.

It’s important to recognise that the need for protein supplementation is based on several factors, including training load, general dietary intake, daily energy and protein requirements, and body composition goals.

It’s important to work with an accredited practicing dietitian to determine if you need a protein supplement like WPI and how to safely incorporate it into your diet.

Fragrances

Choosing the right fragrance for every occasion is a lot like selecting a wine. You match them to mood, occasion, time.

Fragrances are complex things, their scent changing through the day as you move and sweat. Changing your scent for different events can enhance the experience. Here’s how you match a fragrance with an occasion.

FOR THE DAYTIME

It’s good to have a signature scent, something you wear every day. It becomes part of your identity, gives you confidence, and reminds people of you. No need for a showstopper. Choose something simple and light that makes you feel good. An Eau De Parfum has more fragrance oil, so it will last longer, up to about ten hours.

An Eau De Toilette is lighter, gentler on those around you, and lasts around six hours.

Think: floral, citrus, or earthy.
