The year is flying by. It’s already March and Alive Pharmacies are starting to see an early uptake in immunity vitamins and supplements. Over the past year, our amazing team of pharmacists have also been working tirelessly to get locals immunised and protected against influenza, whooping cough, and COVID-19.

This year it’s even more important to keep our immune systems healthy ahead of the cold and flu season to prevent the spread of illness. Your protection after receiving an influenza vaccine is highest for 3-4 months. Consider when you might best need this extra protection. Perhaps you’re planning to travel, or you’re going to an event with lots of new people. Anyone over the age of 6 months can get the influenza vaccination.

In Alive Pharmacies we can offer flu vaccinations from the age of 10 years and up. We will open bookings for flu vaccinations in March – keep an eye out at alivepharmacy.com.au A common symptom of cold and flu virus is a cough. Coughs can arise for many reasons and come in many forms: dry, wet, chronic, whooping, or other health-related reasons.

All types of coughs can be taken care of with the right treatment. If you’re unsure how to relieve your symptoms talk to one of our pharmacists to discuss different suppressants and soothers.

The whooping cough virus is a very contagious cough, and most people were vaccinated against it as a child. The Department of Health’s advice recommends anyone at risk of exposure or susceptible to the virus should get a booster every 10 years. Alive Pharmacists can check your Australian Immunisation Register to check your eligibility and vaccine status.

COVID vaccinations and boosters are still available at selected Alive Pharmacy stores.

The Alive team has recently been participating in the vaccine roll out of primary school aged students and is happy to help all ages stay up to date with your vaccines. We now offer AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Moderna and Novavax.

As the spread of the virus continues to affect our community it’s important to consider your overall health. Watch how you’re feeling and take action as soon as you feel symptoms. Stay on top of your immunity to make sure your body is prepared for the possibility of falling sick. Check out our “Adventure through the body’” on pages 14 and 15. These could be some potential symptoms to take note of.

If you’ve been feeling tired and don’t want to get out of bed, perhaps you need to delve deeper. Although tiredness is a common experience, it’s worth checking in on how you are otherwise feeling. For instance, if you’re also experiencing dizzy spells or head spins when you stand up, it could indicate an underlying imbalance in the body.

Life shouldn’t feel like you’re constantly walking on a tight rope. The pressure of not falling off the merry-go-round when it comes to being a mum or a reliable employee may make you put your feelings on the back burner. You continue to juggle life, despite feeling off. However, having a fast heartbeat, shortness of breath, difficultly concentrating or dizziness is something you should address.

If you also notice your skin is paler, there are changes with your hair and nails, you’re feeling cold and/or experiencing headaches, it could be a sign of an iron deficiency. This is commonly known as anaemia and can be detected with a blood test.

It is most common for young women between ages 18 and 30, but men and children can also be susceptible.

An iron-deficiency can occur when blood is lost during menstruation or from surgery, during pregnancy, while having growth spurts, due to diet (commonly veganism), or from other healthrelated conditions.

When children are anaemic, they may experience similar symptoms to adults. It’s important to fuel their diet and yours with foods like meats, beans, seafood, greens, fibre, and nuts. Vitamin B-12, B6, and C can help the absorption of iron and support your body’s recovery. On the other hand, tea, coffee, and alcohol can affect iron absorption.

Separating such drinks away from iron-rich meals can help restore balance to your body.

Neglecting signals that something is wrong with your body can lead to physical, emotional, and psychological burnout. Such disruption can suck the joy out of life and leave you feeling frustrated or angry. Cases of depression have climbed threefold during the pandemic, so watch your mood and try to stay optimistic. The nitty gritty of anaemia is that iron is essential to the formation of haemoglobin – a protein found in red blood cells. Our red blood cells carry oxygen through our body and are critical for our lungs, muscles, and vital organs.

Anaemia occurs when our body doesn’t have enough healthy red blood cells and our body cannot function properly. Hence, we feel tired.

Your doctor will advise you the best way to treat low iron levels, but often over-the-counter iron supplements are recommended as well as eating red meats, leafy-greens and increasing your intake of vitamins like B and C.

Your brain is constantly monitoring your breath.

Our brains habitually take in oxygen for us, so it’s one less thing on our plate to remember to do. Although breathing is taken care by our brain, we can still control our breath.

Practising control of our respiratory circulation is beneficial for our health.

There are so many different types of coughs.

Here are just a few:

Deep breathing helps ease stress and tension in our bodies. When we take deep breaths, our lungs expand further than our automatic breath and it drives more oxygen through our body. This help cleanse our blood and regulate blood pressure. Try to breathe deeply for a few minutes every day to improve your mental wellbeing and improve your physical health.

INTERRUPTION Your breath can be interrupted by a cough. Coughing is an essential reflex that protects your airway and lungs against irritants. People can experience a cough for different reasons. Typically, it’s a symptom of a cold or flu, but it can also occur with allergies, asthma, smoking, and/ or other conditions.

Nowadays it’s important to protect others from a cough by wearing masks. It’s also important to be sympathetic of those experiencing a cough, as it can be quite uncomfortable and cause strain on the throat.

Despite the discomfort of a cough, sometimes people can develop a habitual cough. Also called a ‘psychogenic cough’. This is when coughing becomes a repetitive behaviour or a tic. Someone might develop this condition after an infection or other health related issue. It’s often triggered by stress and is more common for children.

It is sometimes misdiagnosed as asthma.

There are so many different types of mascaras to choose from, so it can be a little confusing.

Short lashes? Try a lengthening mascara. T hin lashes? Try a thickening mascara. Straight lashes? Try a curling mascara. All three? Try a volumizing mascara.

Then there’s colour. Black mascara can give a dramatic frame to the eyes, whereas brown mascaras can give a more natural look.

Light shades are great for fairer skin tones.

Brush shape makes a difference, too. Use thick bristles for dense lashes, skinny for greater coverage, curved to lift your lashes, and an hourglass shape to help open your eyes.

HEAD

Top to toe. Let’s start with the scalp.

This one mostly affects the kiddos, however, don’t be fooled! Adults can still catch niggly nits. You’ll notice an itch and the feeling of creepy crawlies on your scalp. Head lice can be easily treated with hair shampoo, conditioner, and a lice comb to remove them.

CHEST

Shortness of breath can hit you like an unexpected gust of wind. You may have difficulty while breathing and a tightness in the chest. Sometimes this can simply be due to a lacking lung capacity – the amount of air our lungs can hold. You can build the stamina of your lungs by practicing mindful breathing. Remember to breathe, and to breathe deeply every so often.

HANDS

Got cold feet? What about cold hands? Hands don’t only go cold if you’re in chilly temperatures, but if you have poor circulation too. When blood doesn’t efficiently reach your fingers, your hands may feel cooler than usual. Wear clothing to keep yourself at a comfortable temperature and try doing gentle exercise, like fist clenches or palm massages, to improve circulation.

KNEES

We need knees to walk, climb and move. If we wear them down, we can lose range of motion in this joint.

With age, knee pain can appear out of the blue and affect your quality of life. If you’re feeling weak in the knees its important to keep flexibility in these joints by gently keeping them moving.

Squats, knee extension stretches, walking and biking can be a great way to keep your knees active.

SHOULDERS

A stiff neck and shoulders are all too common nowadays. Crouching over our laptops, hunching over our phones, and lounging while watching TV. Stiffness can make you feel uncomfortable, especially when you have loads of things to do. Try rolling your shoulders clockwise and anticlockwise to loosen these muscles. Then gently rotate your neck to get better flexibility. Be careful when it comes to releasing this muscle tension and be gentle.

Also known as the large bowel or large intestine. If your lower belly feels swollen or you have some gas, call on your colon.
