IT’S COLD & FLU SEASON This winter is expected to bring a cold and flu season like no other. Over the past couple of years, restrictions and border closures meant influenza infections declined significantly. This year, travel is back, and the borders are open. The usual cold and flu infections are expected to sweep across the nation…and it’s already begun.

Queensland did well to reach the benchmark of double-dosed COVID-19 vaccinations ahead of reopening the state. Now Queensland Health encourages people to get their flu vaccination ahead of winter – with the peak of sickness being at the end of July. The benefit of antibodies ensures that the spread of diseases will be less severe.

If we see an uptake in flu vaccinations, it will relieve the burden on our health care system, the general population and the aged care sector.

Especially before visiting our loved ones, a flu vaccination is now essential before visiting any aged care facility to protect those with vulnerable immune systems. Socially distancing, good hygiene and wearing masks when unwell is also just as important.

You may have noticed that a ‘super cold’ is spreading around the community. Influenza, just like COVID-19, is a highly contagious respiratory infection. The flu currently going around has symptoms almost identical to COVID-19.

A rapid-antigen test can help distinguish the difference between the two.

When you fall ill, your immunity is compromised.

This makes you more vulnerable to other viruses.

Just remember, our pharmacists are highly trained to identify different symptoms and to help you get back to your full health. Our pharmacists have also dispersed hundreds of flu vaccinations in the past few months. It is great to see our community taking precautionary measures.

On a different note, a spike in scooter-related injuries has also been hitting the local community.

I’ve been seeing a lot more scrapes, grazes and abrasions. On our recent family trip to Tasmania, it was clear that the uptake of e-scooters is a huge trend across Australia. Sterilising and dressing a wound appropriately can avoid a bad infection. Check out page 4 of this month’s catalogue for some suggestions.

THEY’RE MULTIPLYING

Living in tropical Australia it’s rare to get extremely cold weather. Nevertheless, the cold and flu winter season still exists here as viruses replicate more easily in cooler environments. In the Far North, it’s also a popular time for travel and mid-year holidays, leading to more exposure among the community.

Are you catching a chill?

Often when relatives or friends come to visit, they feel the heat more than locals do. Just like our saltwater crocodiles who like to soak in the sun, many of us have adapted to the warmer weather that comes with living closer to the equator. Our constant body temperature should range between 35 – 40°. Thus, when the temperature is outside the usual range, it often implies we are unwell.

As it gets colder it’s common to ‘catch’ a chill.

Catching a chill doesn’t always warrant a cold/ flu, but it does heighten the chances of falling sick. Being cold puts stress on your body, supressing your immune system and making it harder for your body to fight illness.

It’s common to think, “I should feed a fever, starve a cold” or that “you lose most heat from your head”. Although undeniably good suggestions, your best bet is to drinks lots of fluids, eat when hungry, and wear clothing to feel comfortable.

Being warm-blooded means that we have adaptive responses (like sweating and shivering) to regulate our body temperature.

The colder we feel, the more energy we use to deploy such responses to reach an ideal temperature. Having lower energy levels means having a weakened immune system, and hence: we get sick.

On the contrary, a warm forehead probably means you’ve already caught a bug. You can buy mouth and head thermometers to keep an eye on your body temperature. A good old fashioned cool washcloth is also great to help cool hot flushes.

LATER SKATER You may have noticed the growing popularity of scooters and skateboarders around town. Alive Pharmacy stores certainly haven’t missed it. Pharmacists are being visited more frequently by injured scooter-goers. Sure, cruising on concrete is all fun and games when getting from A to B, but in the unfortunate case you do have a tumble it has proven to cause quite a kerfuffle.

By covering a wound, you protect it from infection whilst keeping it moist and warm. This is an ideal environment for a speedier recovery.

By being proactive and covering a wound with the appropriate dressing you will reduce pain and scarring. It’s normal for a scar to form when a wound heals, but it is more significant if it dries out too quickly. A hydrogel can also be helpful before dressing a wound since it is designed to help sooth the discomfort of a wound by rehydrating it. This is particularly useful for those annoying joints wounds where the skin stretches with movement (like your knee or elbow).

Promote quicker recovery Children’s bodies constantly require energy to create bone, muscle tissue, and skin elasticity.

Hence, their bodies carry more energy to heal faster and repair the damages of a fall. As adults, our bodies are not as flexible nor as quick and nifty as they once were. Injuries and falls can cause more stress on the joints and ligaments, and we tend to have a slower healing time.

Nevertheless, there are many ways to promote quicker recovery.

Stay active and rest up Regular exercise improves your general health and stamina when it comes to accidents. You’ll have a speedy recovery if you continue to do appropriate exercise. Just make sure not to cause additional pain or strain on your injury. If any discomfort occurs, stop and rest. Rest allows your body to focus on repairing damaged cells.

If it’s a deeper muscle injury, cold compresses or icepacks can help.

Girls, it’s time to get your nails in good shape! Keep them clean and tidy with all the essentials: from manicure nail files, cuticle healers, to colourful polishes.

Nail hygiene is important. Changes to your nails can be a sign of an underlying health problem. For instance, peeling or splitting around the nail implies that they are dry and/or you could be low in vitamins like iron or calcium. Moisture is stripped from your hands when you wash them often, are experiencing colder weather, and even when doing household chores.

Chemicals and water soften and weaken your nails, causing wear and tear.

LET’S TALK ABOUT NAILING YOUR MANICURE…

SHAPE

PAINT

The first step is to shape your nails. Use a nail file to achieve the ideal look and use cuticle oil afterwards. Oils will replenish moisture in the base of your nails. With time, this will strengthen your cuticles and allow them to support longer, healthier nails.

Protect you nails with a base coat. This shields your nails from stains and helps keep the colour pigmentation of your nail polish. A topcoat (after applying your colour of choice) will keep your nails strong by preventing chipping and keeping your nails looking fabulous for much longer.

TO SHAPE: hold your hand in a high five position, nails facing towards you. Use light stokes with the file on each side of each nail.

A round shape is the easiest to maintain.

Shape them to a square initially and follow with the natural curve of your fingertip.

TO PAINT: apply a light layer that doesn’t have to be neat or cover the entire nail. This gives you a good starting canvas to go over with an extra layer or two to perfectly cover the nail.

Make sure they dry completely in between coats to prevent clumps.

MOISTURISE

Moisturising will protect your nails from peeling, cracking, chipping and all the mishaps that ruin a good manicure. Although moisturising your entire hand is a good start, applying certain creams or ointments to the base of your nails can help them grow faster and strengthen them over time.

TO MOISTURIZE: apply nail cream that is formularised to suit this area. Preferably, they should contain vitamin E. Gently massage into the base of your nail to stimulate blood circulation and promote nail growth. Doing so can also soothe hangnails.

PRESS-ON NAILS Press-on nails can be a great alternative if your nails are shorter than you like or you want to give them a break from your nail polishes.

A runny nose is common during the winter season due to the cold weather and the greater spread of colds and flus.

On top of the usual winter bugs flying around, lots of travellers wandering around means exposure is more likely. Since viruses are airborne and/or contracted by fluids it’s important to address any symptoms and prevent the spread of illness.

SNEEZING

Ah-ah-achoo! Sneezing is caused by irritants in the nasal mucosa.

When you do sneeze, it expels tiny little droplets into the air. We all know it’s best to sneeze into your elbow to avoid the spread of germs but how can you prevent sneezing from ruining your day? A nifty little hack that works for some people is to say the word ‘pineapple’ aloud when you feel the need to sneeze. This supposably distracts your brain and helps the sensation fizzle away.

RUNNY NOSE

Sure, you can reach for a good old tissue any time, but have you tried other ways to relieve a runny nose? When your sinuses fill with up with liquid it’s not always the best idea to blow your nose all day long. This can put strain on your nasal passages and cause inflammation. Swollen nasal passages constricts air flow and means it might take longer for your passages to clear. Try gently massaging your sinuses to bring comfort to your nose and use essential oils (like eucalyptus) to breathe easily.

STUFFY NOSE

A blocked nose can interfere with your entire day since it places a lot of tension in your head. A runny and stuffy nose can often be treated with similar techniques. One of our go-to remedies is a nasal saline or decongestion spray. Nasal sprays will help shrink blood vessels/tissues that are inflamed in the nose, but you should only use these a couple of times for full effect. Overusing them can cause a counteracting effect. A cool mist humidifier beside your bed can also combat congestion from dry winter air or taking a hot shower and letting the steam clear the nasal passageway.

HEADACHES

Drip, drip, drip. When you feel like your nose just won’t give you a break it’s likely you’ll feel a headache coming on. When your sinus is playing up you can’t help but focus on it. This causes mental fatigue and drains your energy levels very quickly. A headache can be prevented or soothed via hydration. Drinking too much caffeine or consuming too much sugar will only elevate a headache. Sipping on electrolyte drinks will restore energy and help with focus. ITCHY OR WATERY EYES

Trust us when we say rubbing your eyes will only make it worse.

This accelerates irritation and inflammation causing your eyes to become redder and more swollen.
