Kickstart your child’s health with this month’s Live+ edition. We delve into the topic of motivating children to adopt positive dietary habits and incorporate beneficial routines into their daily lives. On pages 14 and 15, you’ll find a plethora of invaluable advice from Health Management Dietitians. Remember, food is fuel, and it forms the cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle.

Healthy eating during childhood can help reduce the chances of developing health problems in later life. It is important to encourage kids to consume a balanced diet that includes foods from all the food groups. This will help them develop healthy habits as they grow older.

Given the increasing number of people choosing dairy-free alternatives, it is important to ensure that children do not miss out on essential nutrients such as calcium, protein, and vitamin D. These nutrients are crucial for building strong bones and reducing the risk of chronic diseases in later life. Similarly, the elderly community should also be mindful of this. They may be lacking certain nutrients due to throat or taste concerns, feeling unmotivated, or experiencing limited mobility.

As we head into peak cold and flu season, it’s important to take preventive measures. It all starts with practicing good hand hygiene. Always remember to wash your hands with soap and running water after using the bathroom, before and after meals, after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose, after touching pets or animals, and whenever your hands appear dirty.

Hand hygiene is one of the quickest and easiest ways to reduce the spread of infectious diseases. Additionally, it is important to avoid sharing cups, utensils, and other personal items to minimise the risk of infection. When coughing or sneezing, remember to cover your mouth and nose with your elbow. Dispose of used tissues in the bin and immediately wash your hands afterward.

On another note, we have observed a noticeable increase in the number of young adults expressing interest in gaining work experience, which is a positive trend. We collaborate with Vocational Partnerships Group (VPG) to provide opportunities for youths who wish to explore the retail and health industries. Through this collaboration, they have the chance to shadow experienced pharmacy assistants and acquire hands-on experience in performing daily procedures. In some instances, this experience has even resulted in employment opportunities within our group.

Childhood imagination is often encouraged through play, books, music, and education. Children are constantly surrounded by creative tools and toys that spark their imagination, fostering a sense of creativity and an adventurous spirit.

Technology now plays a significant role in the ways we explore education, entertainment, and stimulation. AI technology is leading us into a powerful transitional phase, where our children will have smart technology to assist their learning, support them academically, and provide access to endless resources.

In pharmacy, a great deal of research and technology is involved in the creation of vitamins and supplements. For instance, multivitamins are designed to provide the essential vitamins and nutrients that your body cannot produce on its own or consume (in sufficient quantities). If you are able to obtain all the necessary nutrients from your diet, taking a multivitamin may not be necessary, or alternatively, a specific vitamin could prove beneficial.

CHILDREN’S IMMUNITY

The immune system is a complex network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to protect our bodies from foreign invaders, such as bacteria, viruses, and toxins. Key components of the immune system include white blood cells, antibodies, lymph nodes, and more. They are supported by specialised cells and organs like the skin, mucous membranes, respiratory system, and gastrointestinal system, all working to maintain the body’s defense against pathogens.

The human immune system consists of two primary components: the innate immune system, which is present from birth, and the adaptive immune system, which develops as a result of exposure to foreign substances. Both play crucial roles in initiating an immune response when encountering pathogens. Various types of immune cells, such as white blood cells, work together to protect the body from harm and enhance its immunity against invaders.

The innate immune system begins to develop in the early stages of pregnancy however, it takes time for it to mature and become fully functional. From the moment a baby is born, their immune system starts working and continues to develop as they are exposed to pathogens and toxins.

Babies, infants and young children have highly active immune systems with a specialised set of cells that provide protection against infections. However, due to their immature immune system, they may have a higher susceptibility to certain infections compared to adults. As we grow, our immune system undergoes maturation and acquires the ability to recognise and combat various pathogens and toxins.

It is widely known that daycares, schools, and young children can serve as breeding grounds for infections and illnesses, so what can we do to help our little ones fight off illness and strengthen their immune system? While it is important to note that individual immune responses may vary, there are several measures we can adopt to promote overall health and support a robust immune system.

5 TOP TIPS FOR A HEALTHY IMMUNE SYSTEM

HYGIENE

We hear it time and time again, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, but hand hygiene is key to preventing exposure and spread of pathogens. Regular and effective hand washing does reduce your risk and is worth teaching children proper technique.

HYDRATION

It may sound simple, but drinking enough water each day will ensure that your body is hydrated and able to work effectively at mitigating infection. When we are dehydrated, our body is forced to work harder and can even be a breeding ground for infection.

REST

Adequate rest and good quality sleep are key to a strong immune system. We are more likely to get sick when exposed to a pathogen when our body is fatigued or stressed. Make sure you and your little ones are getting enough rest.

HEALTHY DIET

A healthy balanced diet with 2 serves of fruit and 5 serves of vegetables daily is key to maintaining healthy function and getting all your essential nutrients. Aim to eat a wide variety of fresh produce, and instil those habits in your children.

EXERCISE AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Keeping fit and healthy through regular movement and physical activity enables your body to function at its best and help fight off infection. Aim for at least 30 minutes daily, to get your heart rate and blood pumping.
