JULY ALREADY? The year is flying by. We are at the halfway mark of 2022 and close to the end of the cold and flu season.

Since the introduction of the Queensland Government free flu vaccination programs we have become very busy in the pharmacies.

A massive shout out to our great team of pharmacists who have taken up the call to administer hundreds of flu and COVID vaccinations over these past few months.

We really appreciate your patience and understanding during this busy time for us all.

After receiving a vaccination people can feel discomfort, fatigued, and/or nauseated.

It’s also common to feel anxious about the idea of getting a needle so here are a few tips to feel better during the process: 1.

Eat something. Having something nutritious in your system beforehand can ease dizzy spells and reduce other side effects.

Choose a combination of unrefined carbs, healthy fats, and protein for extra recovery power. Afterwards, think about ginger tea, crackers, or chicken broth to ease nausea.

Hydrate. Headaches are a common side-effect of any vaccination and drinking plenty of fluids can prevent them.

Also, if you’re dehydrated it can heighten pain receptors since your body has to work harder to push blood cells without adequate fluids.

3.

Rest and recover. Some people feel the effects of a jab more than others. If you feel discomfort, you can ice the injection site.

You should also avoid strenuous activity for a day or two, sleep it off, and if required take some over-the-counter pain relievers like aspirin, acetaminophen (like Tylenol), or ibuprofen (like Chemists Own or Advil).

To deliver our prescriptions faster, Alive Pharmacy Group has been installing robotics to make the dispensing process more efficient.

This means we can optimise prescription fulfilment while our pharmacists and pharmacy assistants spend more time helping our patients and the community.

DOES MY BUM LOOK BIG in this?

Dietary fats are an essential energy source for your body. They support cell function, protect your organs, and keep your body warm. Fats also help absorb good nutrients into the body, which in turn boost your immunity.

Good fats However, there must be an emphasis on the ‘healthy’ in healthy-fats. The source and quality of fat comes in four main forms: the good (polyunsaturated, monounsaturated) and the bad (saturated and trans). Good fats are beneficial for the heart, blood and cholesterol. Think fatty fish, avocados, almonds, and peanuts.

Bad, saturated fats Bad fats on the other hand clog your arteries and increase your risk of disease. Small amounts of naturally occurring fats are okay - it’s the artificial fats to look out for. These raise bad cholesterol and create inflammation in the essential organs.

Think commercial pastries, cookies, processed snacks and fried foods.

Saturated fats sit somewhere towards the healthier side of the unhealthy cohort. While it’s fine to consume them, replacing them with alternatives can be better for your overall health.

For instance, you can swap butter with olive oil.

Boost your weight loss journey Eating a lot of fats (whether healthy or unhealthy) can contribute to weight gain because they are high in calories. Consider them a garnish. Lesser amounts still contain high levels of energy, which can aid your fitness regimen as well as digestion and weight loss.

WHAT IS IT?

TIME TO WEIGH IN

Metabolism refers to all the chemical processes going on continuously inside your body that allow normal functioning. These processes include breaking down nutrients from food and how they are used to build and repair our bodies. Building and repairing the body requires energy and that comes from your food.

When it comes to your weight loss journey there are some trends to avoid: •

The amount of energy is measured in kilojoules (kJ) that your body burns at any given time is affected by your metabolism. Maintaining or achieving a healthy weight is a balancing act. If you regularly eat and drink more kilojoules than we need for our metabolism you will most likely store is as fat.

Most of the energy we use each day is used to keep all the systems in our bodies functioning properly. This is out of our control however you can make your metabolism work for you through exercise. When your body is active your body burns kilojoules.

Cutting out one or more major food groups Replacing all food consumption with powders or supplements Short term changes to eating behaviours rather than long-term sustainable changes.

Using unproven or unsafe equipment to aid in weight loss e.g., saunas, diuretics, and body wraps.

Rapid weight loss

A common diet is the very low-calorie method using meal replacements, bars, or soups. Make sure you consider:

Metabolism rate can be divided into three components: Basal metabolism rate (BMR) Even while resting our bodies need energy. This accounts for the largest amount of energy expended during the day – 50-80% of your daily energy use.

Thermic effect of food (also known as thermogenesis) This is the energy used to digest your food and drinks you consume, and its absorption, transport, and storage. This accounts for 5-10% of your daily energy use.

Other positive steps you can take on your weight loss journey is regular physical activity such as:

Energy used during physical activity Energy used by physical movement varies depending on how much energy you use each day. Physical activity includes planned exercise like going for a run or playing sports. This also includes incidental activity like hanging out the washing or playing with the family pet. Based on a moderately active person (30-45 minutes of moderate-intensity movement activity per day) this component contributes 20% of our daily energy use.

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR SALAD DRESSING Ingredients

1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar 1 tbsp. Dijon mustard 1 tbsp. honey 1 garlic clove, minced optional 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. pepper

Method

Place all of the ingredients into a mason jar and shake for a good 30-60 seconds until combined.

It always seems to be the case that when our children get sick, we get sick.

Illness spreads quickly through schools. Typically this occurs due to the social contact pattern. Kids play together, share pencils, and may not wash their hands quite as often as they should. They spend the entire day together, day after day, until eventually the entire class is off sick.

The act of caring

The number one rule to beat the flu

Being a close contact of their peers makes them most at risk of catching and transmitting influenza. Hence, when children come home sick, their parents often catch it. Caring for someone with a cold or flu certainly increases your chances of catching it.

Don’t be too concerned; it doesn’t always mean you will catch a cold or that your immune system is weak. It’s the luck of the draw really. But always number 1: consider your personal hygiene.

Viruses are contracted through the respiratory system (coughing, sneezing, talking or touching your eyes, nose or mouth).

Spreading more than love While kids may get sick more often, they also often bounce back quicker than adults because they are resilient and full of energy. Although it’s great to see them back playing with friends, this tends to spread infection. Children like to share the love, so consider allowing your child to rest at home if you’re able to.

ROCK YOUR CRAZY HAIR During July, rocking crazy hair is an annual way to bring awareness to those suffering from cystic fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis primarily affects the lungs and respiratory system. The body has difficulty managing the production of mucus and the passageways can close.

Healthy fats are an essential part of a diet for people with cystic fibrosis. High fat diets are encouraged to increase energy and weight management. Routine is important for a person living with cystic fibrosis with treatments including physio sessions, up to 40 tablets a day and consistent exercise.

It’s important to be mindful of others during this year’s cold /flu season. Practise good hygiene and stay home when unwell.

Little Ones Healthy habits start in childhood. Children are developing long-term health conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. A survey by NSW Schools Physical Activity and Nutrition indicates more than a fifth of Australian children are obese or overweight. It can be hard to navigate the volume of health information out there to guide parents. Our advice is to lead by example and get your kids involved in preparing their food.

MAKE A MESS Getting your kids involved in their food preparation is a great way to bond. They can start helping with food preparation as soon as they can feed themselves. It will be messy and not exactly the most time efficient task, but they will LOVE IT! Stirring, chopping, and baking, all with supervision, helps foster positive relationships with food.

It will also give them a better understanding of where their food comes from.
