On behalf of the Alive Pharmacy Warehouse Group, we wish everyone a happy and heathy Christmas.
As we count down the days to sipping cocktails by the pool; the holiday season is upon us! The festive season is often a time when family and loved ones come together. We spend more time swimming and playing outdoors, and if we’re lucky – enjoying a gift or two.
I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge the outstanding work of all our Alive Pharmacy Staff. Their commitment to the wellbeing of patients, and contribution to community are an invaluable part of our organisation, and I look forward to seeing continued successes in 2024.
With the power to conjure merriment and camaraderie, alcohol has been a cherished part of human culture for centuries. Yet, as dawn breaks, many of us may have experienced the less charming aftermath of a night of indulgence – the infamous hangover.
This year our pharmacists have participated in the North Queensland Full Scope of Practice Pilot. We are nearly at the end of our 12-month post graduate education and training. Soon our pharmacists will be able to renew certain prescriptions and consult patients on a number of approved medical conditions. Services are expected to commence in March 2024.
A hangover is our reaction to the intoxication of alcohol, affecting various systems in our body. We may experience dehydration and nausea, aches and pains from inflammation, shakiness or dizziness due to blood sugar fluctuations, and disrupted sleep patterns are all common symptoms.
As part of the Pilot, we have been attending intensive face-to-face trainings at James Cook University (JCU). It’s been great to see the Health and Medicine sector of the university expand. JCU now offers Pharmacy courses across three of their Queensland campuses (Cairns, Townsville, and Mackay). The construction of the Cairns University Hospital is another major milestone for the region. The proposal of the new building will create a centre for clinical education, training, and research. All 8 of our Alive Pharmacy stores recently came together to celebrate the amazing year we’ve had together. Some of our staff have been with the group for over 10 years now. We had a lot of fun dressing up and presenting awards to our dedicated staff. As we venture into the festive holiday season, you’ll start to see our staff wearing Christmas shirts to work; decorations and gifts already fill the stores. This time of year, is all about coming together, creating memories, and strengthening bonds. Yummy festive treats can sometimes lead to overindulgence, remember be active, conscious of portion sizes, and stay hydrated to support a healthy lifestyle balance. Sports supplements can be used to compliment your exercise regime and help you stay full for longer. Vitamin B is another good supplement to support your metabolism and energy levels. Vitamin C is useful for combatting free radicals and support your immune system - its antioxidant properties are especially beneficial after consuming alcohol. ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS, IS A HANGOVER CURE… Though our relationship with alcohol and the dreaded hangover can be a bit of a love-hate affair, there are several strategies that can help alleviate the dreaded hangover if you choose to partake and overindulge: 1
HYDRATION
Drink plenty of water to combat dehydration. 2 REST Get ample rest to aid recovery and allow your immune system to rebuild. 3 OVER THE COUNTER MEDICATION Pain relievers and anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen can help alleviate pains, and eye drops can soothe tired or irritated eyes. 4 GENTLE EXERCISE AND HEALTHY FOOD A light walk and nutritious food can restore some balance to your routine and expedite your journey back to full health. 5 VITAMIN C This powerful antioxidant can help combat oxidative stress caused by alcohol consumption, while also supporting the immune system and overall health. 5 BEROCCA EFFERVESCENT TABLETS Offer a holistic approach to managing a hangover. Dissolve a tablet in water to replenish your energy and essential vitamins.

DEBUNKING BREAKING THE SEAL You may have heard the phrase ‘breaking the seal’, especially when it comes to drinking alcohol. This saying suggests that your first trip to the bathroom after a few drinks opens the floodgates, and there’s no turning back. Interestingly, this idea might just be a myth. However, if you’re convinced that ‘breaking the seal’ leads to more frequent trips to the bathroom, it might linger in your mind and actually increase your urge to go. Alcohol is also a diuretic, prompting more frequent trips to the bathroom. Remember that resisting the urge to use the bathroom isn’t a good idea. Being a repeat offender of holding in your urine can elevate your risk of developing a urinary tract infection (UTI).
Tips
MANAGING A UTI A UTI is caused by a build-up of bacteria in the urinary tract.
+ Drink cranberry juice, it can help prevent bacteria from adhering to the urinary tract lining
+ Always wipe front to back when using the bathroom + Vitamin C can help support the immune system’s ability to combat infection
