WELCOME AUGUST! It’s August, and your family’s health couldn’t be more important. The cold and flu season may have come to an end, but there are still many cases of influenza and COVID-19 strains going around. .

Children are sneaky culprits when it comes to spreading viruses and they can sometimes be the ones most at risk. Along with vulnerable communities, newborns and young children can easily be susceptible to illness. Its important to take general steps to protect our community, like taking care of children and wearing masks when exposed to direct contacts of illness.

Being a father means you play an important part of your family’s team and looking after your children. Father’s Day is coming up, and if you’re looking for an activity to do with Dad this year, getting active and participating in a community event can be very rewarding. Alive Pharmacy proudly supports several health and fitness events around the area, one being the Cardiac Challenge.

The adventure of the Cardiac Challenge takes you through the rainforest of Atherton Tablelands, down the Savannah and onto the shores of the Cooktown over three days – one of my favorite destinations! I’ve been riding this event for over 10 years and met many great people along the way.

This event is not about cycling but rather about people meeting through a passion for fundraising towards a good cause and looking after their own health.

Although this activity may seem like one for the older kids, it’s not the case. Anyone can participate, with under 14s and 14 to 16-year-olds categories taking place alongside the main event.

The Cardiac Challenge is brought to you by the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation and raises money for the Cairns Hospital’s cardiac unit – which ticks a lot of my boxes.

On another note, hemp has become all the craze in health and beauty. These products and other plant-based treatments can be super valuable as they’re full of healthy fats and fatty acids.

Hemp in skincare can treat acne and it is antiaging. It’s compounded into an oil for skincare products, which makes it ideal for irritated and dry skin. A WARM WELCOME Being a parent is a learned skill. Sometimes things don’t go as planned or as expected.

It’s a completely new world delving into parenthood and the guidance and support of midwives, paediatricians and community health workers can take a lot of the pressure and stress off.

Interesting FACT

All newborns’ bodily systems must work in synchronism after birth in a completely independent way, since they are no longer reliant on their mothers’ nutrients for survival. When a baby experiences some trouble during the transition, a health assessment is required to detect underlying complications.

When there is a complication at birth, or when a baby is born prematurely, they go straight into special care or a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Since babies do not hold onto much body fat - especially when born prematurely - they have trouble controlling their bodily temperature. In most cases, newborns are placed into heated cots or covered incubators. These methods keep them comfortable and warm to reserve their energy and assist in the recovery to full health.

Newborn babies lose heat nearly 4 times faster than an adult.

Early intervention programs aim to minimise the impact on a child’s health and ongoing risk factors. The very early stages of life provide a unique opportunity to influence the development of their specific needs. We are very fortunate in Australia that Medicare provides a safety net financially, helping with the costs of specialist and intensive care unit services, as well as GP visits.

Approximately 40,000 babies are admitted to special care each year in Australia.*

RED NOSE DAY FRIDAY 12 AUGUST Red Nose Day is a global movement raising money for the prevention of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), where a baby passes away in its sleep. Since it began in 1988, there has been a huge 85% reduction in sudden deaths, saving more than 11,000 babies. That’s because research the fundraiser has paid for has led to the development of six steps parents can take to reduce the risk of their baby dying in their sleep. As well as continuing to fund research into SIDS and stillbirth, donations also help provide support services for grief-stricken parents.

The cardiovascular system is made up of your heart and bloods vessels.

During exercise, the heart rate increases, and the arterial blood pressure elevates. When you exercise regularly, your body builds a tolerance and stamina and improves oxygen circulation to your heart.

Target heart rate: the fitter you become, the harder it is to reach your target heart rate. When your fitness improves your heart works more efficiently and you can start to move with less effort.

Resistance training can help improve your endurance, which is great to promote lean body mass and basal metabolism. Increase both repetitions and load levels for stronger and more durable muscles and bones.

Your body will begin to change shape when you exercise. You’ll lose fat and gain muscle, adding to overall improvements in your physical, mental and social health.

Bike for Life Walking, swimming or cycling are all great ways to keep you physically active. Alive Pharmacy is involved in a number of cycling events during the year. It’s a great low impact workout that’s good for increasing strength and stamina. It’s also a fun way to get fit. Cycling is very social, it’s full of adventure and being outdoors is great.

Cycling mainly provides aerobic benefits, which means it’s great for you heart, blood vessels and lungs. It is ideal for increasing cardiovascular fitness and reduces the risk of a heart attack. People experiencing cardiovascular health complications can suffer from heart failure, heart attacks, strokes or cardiac arrest.

Get amongst the energy and get involved. Cyclists will ride from Cairns to Cooktown over three days to raise money for the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation.

It’s a sporting adventure for enthusiastic cyclists but anyone is encouraged to support the event by cheering them along.

The course winds through Atherton Tablelands, across savannah lands to Cooktown.

PART OF THE TEAM Growing up and having reliable and supportive parents is ultimately what children need. Dads play an important role in a baby’s health and development.

Here are a few ways Dad makes a difference…

PLAYMATE Research shows that fathers are likely to become a baby’s primary playmate. About two-thirds of young babies choose their dad when it comes to play time. When a baby is born, they already have a connection with their mother and their fathers are more of an unknown to them. A newborn will start to notice mum is protective and calming, whilst Dad is more playful and physical. They start to realise that mum will pick them up when they chuck up a fuss, and that dad will tickle them or lift them in the air.

2 BUILDING TRUST During the first couple of years of a child’s life they learn to trust and distrust others. The reliability and quality of their parent’s time will give them the first taste of it all.

Early bonding between dads and their babies can be enhanced by skin-to-skin contact. Holding a baby close and spending time with them encourages facial recognition and builds their social confidence. By giving them your time and being kind and gentle, you will encourage healthy trust development.

LIVING APART If your family isn’t the traditional nuclear arrangement, considering a father figure could be a good idea. A male role model is positive for a baby growing up so that they are familiar with different social interactions.

If a father lives away from their children, or if a male role model isn’t in the direct household, writing letters, phone calls or video calling is good for the child to know that they care. Sometimes it’s more about quality than quantity too. Being flippant with your interactions only has negative impacts on their development.

TEACHER Playing with children is one of the best ways to kick-start a baby’s coordination, problemsolving, emotional management, self-confidence, concentration, balance, trust, creativity, and the list goes on. Nurturing a child whilst playing can help them pursue goals without distractions and stress.

If Dad is present in playtime it will contribute to your child’s physical, intellectual, and social development.

BUILDING STRENGTH

When a mother breastfeeds, she may hold her baby resting along her forearm, like a holding a rugby ball. This is quality bonding time for them.

Tummy time is an alternative to the football hold.

Dads can lay on their back and place bub on their chest, providing benefits of eye contact and close physical touch while building the baby’s strength and co-ordination. Massaging and talking to them is also a good way to connect and stimulate brain development. Aim to reach an hour of tummy time a day.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS Research shows fathers can sometimes have greater impact than their mothers when it comes to language, perhaps because children are less familiar with their fathers, so they tend to be more intuitive to what is being said and done.

Talking about their skills, hobbies and likes can enrich their children’s language skills, which correlates to their academic success.

FATHER’S DAY ACTIVITIES

Girls look up to their fathers and will learn qualities from them subconsciously. If a father shows their daughter what a healthy relationship looks like, she will grow to look for those qualities in others. By giving her love and displaying chivalry when you’re around her, she’ll attach to others who do the same. By giving your daughter validation it will give her more self-confidence growing up.

It’s important for men to show their approval and their respect to their sons to give them confidence.
