REDUCING THE RISK 2-8th August 2021 is National Stroke Week which is a timely reminder to think about practical things we can do to help prevent stroke.

More than 80% of strokes can be prevented by managing stroke risk and living a healthy lifestyle.

You can assess your stroke risk with a quick test found at strokefoundation.org.au.

Some basic practical health changes can make a big difference in stroke prevention • 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity every day can decrease risk of type 2 diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol. Over half of all Australians do not do the recommended amount of physical activity to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Schedule in your daily activity to stay on track and change it up to stay motivated.

• A healthy balanced diet can also help reduce risk factors for stroke, as well as limiting alcohol intake.

While we can make healthier lifestyle choices to prevent stroke, there is also good evidence for some vitamins and supplements which can be used to lower blood cholesterol and blood pressure.

Don’t Go Breakin’ My Heart One of the most important muscles in your body is your heart.

At about the size of a clenched fist sitting front and middle of your chest, behind and slightly to the left of your breastbone, this all-important muscle pumps blood to all parts of your body.

It provides oxygen, hormones, and other components to a host of essential cells. Your heartbeat is the result of blood moving forward through your arteries. You can feel this movement as a ‘pulse’. At rest, an adult heart beats at a rate of 60 to 100 times per minute. A child’s average heart rate is higher.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) CoQ10 is an antioxidant that your body produces naturally, but levels decrease with age. There is evidence supplements can have benefits for people with cardiovascular disease, including reducing the risk of repeat heart attacks, improving outcomes in heart failure patients and lowering blood pressure.

Coenzyme Q10 plays a central role in the energy-production structures within cells and the storage of that energy in the cells.

This fat-soluble compound can be taken in your diet.

Coenzyme Q10 can interact with a small number of prescription medications. You should always check with your Alive Pharmacy Warehouse pharmacist before taking these supplements to ensure they are safe for you. You need to be particularly careful with some blood pressure medications, Warfarin, and some chemotherapy medications. There are many common herbs and supplements that interact with prescription medications so it’s best to ask before taking.

WHY DO I PEE SO MUCH? How much is too much in terms of using your bladder? It is normal and healthy to pee several times a day. A lot of us don’t know how to maintain a healthy bladder. It is important to know the role the bladder plays in your health, why it’s crucial, the different drinks and foods that are good for bladder health and what to avoid.

What does a bladder do?

The bladder is like your belly a pouch-shaped expandable organ.

When signalled, the muscles of your bladder will release your urine through a tube to carry the urine out of your body. The bladder can increase from two inches to six depending on how much liquid fills it. The organ is essential because it filters extra fluids and wastes from your bloodstream.

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) can cause temporary incontinence episodes due to bacteria.

The bacteria invade the bladder and weaken the muscles of the urethra, which carries urine from your body. UTIs affect everyone a little differently. You may suffer from the following symptoms: • Burning with urination • Increased frequency of urination without passing much urine • Increased urination urgency • Bloody urine • Cloudy urine • Discoloured urine – tea or cola-like • Strong urine odour • Pelvic pain in women • Rectal pain in men

UTI’s caused by sexual activity have commonly been referred to as Honeymoon Disease. Symptoms are the same as above. To help prevent this type of UTI, empty your bladder after having sex.

UTI’s can affect your kidneys, which can potentially be life threatening as the bacteria moves from your kidneys to your bloodstream. This can cause dangerously low blood pressure, shock, and death.

Treatment Treating a UTI will vary depending on the cause. Generally, a form of antibiotic will be involved to treat the bacteria. You can now speak to your pharmacist about options for treating UTIs without a script for medication.

Prevention is the best option when it comes to UTIs. As soon as your symptoms present themselves, there are some self-help treatments that may resolve cystitis in a few days.

• Drink plenty of water • Rest • Use a urinary alkaliniser e.g. Ural • Avoid acidic food or drinks • Take pain relief like paracetamol to reduce the pain

Fascinators are standard fashion for ladies for any race day. Originating from 17th century Europe, the sole purpose of this accessory was to give a woman an alluring air of mystery. They have become a staple for high-profile royal events in the UK.

If you’re not quite bold enough to try a fascinator, headbands are a great alternative. A simple yet dressy headband can suffice to fulfil the ‘headwear’ etiquette.

For those looking for inexpensive headwear or if you have left it to the last minute, try whipping up a beautiful fascinator that no one else will have. Your local craft shop should have most of the materials you’ll need, from feathers to material flowers and sinamay. You’ll also need to work out how the fascinator will attach to your head. Usually a headband, a thin elastic, comb, or clips is appropriate. Finally, use a hot glue gun to stick your arrangement of flowers and feathers to your headband or side comb and voilà – your custom fascinator!

USING A BUN DONUT For those not blessed with thicker hair, a bun donut is a great hack to achieve a fuller bun.

Tie hair up into a high ponytail.

Thread your hair through the donut to the base of your ponytail.

Spread your hair from the ponytail completely around the bun, hiding it under your hair.

Secure your hair with another hair tie over and around the donut.

With your leftover strands of hair style them around the edges of your bun. If you have enough hair, you can go back over the bun to add even more volume.

Secure strands with bobby pins and finish with hairspray.
