HELLO! Smell that fresh air! Spring is here and we are hitting the outdoors. Whether it be beach, bushwalks or sport, the sun is out and it’s the best time of year to be out and about. The change of season brings with it a raft of skin issues that we see presented to us in your local Alive Pharmacy. Eczema, sunburn, bites/stings, rashes and fungus are common things that pharmacists and pharmacy assistants help to treat every day. One of the first things I recommend to people with skin issues is to look at the soap that you use in the bath or shower. Bar soaps are notorious for causing dryness and irritation due to suboptimal pH ranges. Fragrance is also a common irritant, not just in soap but also in washing powder. Take a look at your soaps and washing powders and review your regime – try a soap substitute such as QV Wash or Cetaphil, have shorter/cooler showers and dry yourself carefully. We are seeing increased numbers of patients visiting us in the pharmacy with sun damaged skin or after removal of non-melanoma skin cancers. It is super important that you look after your skin after excision and to prevent further sun damage. Some of the things your pharmacist may recommend here include: + Sunscreen for the face. A daily formulation for the face, at least 50+, that will sit well under make-up and will not sweat off + Sunscreen for the body. This will be selected based on individual needs – for example if it is for sport and needs to be sweat proof, for the beach and needs to be waterproof and easy to reapply or just a good all rounder for the family + Topical B3 cream has be proven to reverse and repair sun damage. SolarCareB3 is the product our pharmacist and our referring GP’s recommend. There are some great tips and tricks in this months edition of LIVE+. I know myself I’ll be cleaning/swapping out some old and dirty make-up brushes and lightening up my moisturisers for the warmer months!

Here in Far North Queensland we are fortunate enough that we don’t suffer from the stereotypical winter. Winter does still take effect, but we still can’t wait for the warmer months to come around again. Since many of us are not used to cooler and dryer weather our skin sometimes doesn’t cope very well. We opt for heavier serums, balms, and oils during the colder months. Now it’s starting to warm up its time to adjust that all important skin care routine again.

EXFOLIATE

SWAP MOISTURISER

When your skin is extra dry, we need to exfoliate to remove the dead skin and unblock pores. Use a gentle exfoliator rather than a harsh scrub. Using a harsh scrub or exfoliating too often can disrupt the skin’s protective barrier and leave you skin vulnerable especially for those who suffer from eczema. If your skin becomes vulnerable you may become prone to viral or bacterial infections. A formula with a small amount of glycolic acid will do the trick. However, for those who suffer from eczema this can be a chore to find a cleanser that will work for you. Some have found oatmeal bars work well as a gentle exfoliator.

During winter you would have been using something a little richer because you would have been feeling a little drier and itchier. Swap your moisturiser for something a little lighter. Try a water-based formula. Eczema sufferers will also find picking a suitable moisturiser a bit of a chore as people who have eczema find that their skin doesn’t retain moisture very well and dry out easily even in the warmer months. If you have an eczema flare up you may have to use a cream or ointment prescribed by a doctor as soon as it presents itself or it can lead to trauma left by itching which can result in scarring and nobody wants that! A few tips for moisturising if you suffer from eczema:

DRINK WATER You’ll be surprised at the amount of water you’ve been drinking during winter. Since it’s cooler we don’t feel the need to drink as much water. Hydration is very important for your skin. A nice little combination to drink if you want to feel fancy is water, cucumbers, lemon, and mint. This is a classic ‘spa’ water combo. The lemon and mint aid in digestion and the cucumber rehydrates as well as deliver anti-inflammatory properties.

+ Use fragrance free or dye free moisturisers + To prevent contamination, use a clean implement to remove the moisturiser from its container rather than using your hands + If the moisturiser feels ‘tacky’ do not remove the excess.If the moisturiser feels ‘tacky’ do not remove the excess and give it a few minutes to absorb into your skin. Don’t forget the SPF! Sun damage is a skin ager.

Are you sabotaging your skin? Can’t figure out why your skincare routine isn’t working as well as it should be. Don’t forget to pay attention to your cosmetic products. Make up brushes and sponges build up some hard-to-reach grime and bacteria. No matter how well you treat your skin if you apply your make up and cosmetics with make up brushes covered in bacteria, you’re fighting a losing battle. Use a gentle cleanser for washing your brushes and lay them flat to dry over 24 hours. Tip: Use Johnson and Johnson’s Baby Shampoo – it’s natural, gentle and free of many other irritants that should potentially affect your skin.

THAT PREGNANCY Did you know?

Many women actually experience a variety of skin changes during pregnancy. Anything from rashes, redness, acne & discolouration. This can happen as early as the first trimester while others don’t realise changes until their second or third. This is largely due to your hormones causing the over processing of oil making you vulnerable to heat rash. Skin tags or small raised growth on our skin is also another common during pregnancy.

WHAT YOU DO WHEN THIS HAPPENS?

Drink lots of water

Stick to short showers. Bathing too much could be stripping the moisture from your skin

Stick to an appropriate diet

If pimples are an issue, wash you face with a very gentle cleanser two to three times a day

Most antihistamines are safe to take during pregnancy. Sedating antihistamines, such as promethazine (Phenergan), have been recommended more frequently and so there is more research available about their use during pregnancy. However, less-sedating antihistamines, such as loratadine (Claratyne), can be taken by women who are unable to tolerate sedating antihistamines. Whilst safe, it is important that antihistamines are taken at their recommended doses for the shortest duration possible.

WHAT PAIN RELIEF CAN I TAKE WHILE PREGNANT?

Paracetamol at the recommended dosage is safe to take during any stage of pregnancy. Many over the counter products such as Panadol and Lemsip contain paracetamol, so it is important to always check with your pharmacist before taking a combination of pain relief medications. Antiinflammatories, such as Ibuprofen (Nurofen, Advil), aspirin and diclofenac (Voltaren) should be avoided.

I USUALLY USE CORTISONE CREAM FOR MY ECZEMA, AND I HAVE FALLEN PREGNANT. SHOULD I STOP USING IT? There are many different types of corticosteroid creams used to manage eczema; they all vary in terms of potency and form. Short term use of lower potency corticosteroids is generally safe to use during pregnancy. Have a chat to your pharmacist or doctor to check whether your cream is still safe to use during your pregnancy. Where possible, alternative measures such as moisturisers should be considered. Moisturisers can improve the skin’s barrier function and reduce itching; they should be applied at least twice a day, especially after a shower or bath.

We are all coming out of winter and into spring. Not to mention ISO. During winter we gain a few kilos and want to shred them in preparation for summer. Due to COVID-19 our lifestyle’s have changed due to restrictions and we are becoming less active in our daily lives. It is these small changes that can have a bigger impact on our overall health.

Skipping Breakfast

Lunch too late

Working from home means our alarm clocks go off later than usual and it can be easy to skip breakfast. The issue with this is that we fail to tap into the natural metabolic boost we will experience in the first couple of hours of the day. By opting for just a coffee we are left with an insufficient number of calories.

Small breakfast followed by multiple snacks. 12pm rolls around and you’re not that hungry. A late lunch won’t hurt, it will. As the day progresses the second half of your day becomes more calorie concentrated and you are less likely to burn through those calories. As this continues to be a habit you will be more likely gain weight over time.

breakfast or adopt a 16:8 fasting regime. This is known as intermittent fasting. A period of 16 hours of no food then 8 hours of eating. By skipping all food until lunchtime, you are adopting the 16:8 ratio of not eating and eating. This has been known for kick starting your metabolism. So, if you want to take on the 16:8 you’ll have to lose that milky morning coffee. That morning coffee replacing your breakfast could be contributing to those extra kilos.

Heavy meals at night The issue with enjoying more indulgent meals, especially at night is that they tend to be more calories per serve. Plus that sneaky wine. Most of us don’t need that many calories since we are sitting a lot more these days.

Solution + Limit high-carb, high-calorie meals to once or twice a week. Choose a lower calorie meal option like grills, salads, or soup while in lockdown.

As a Community Pharmacy Group, we take care of the ongoing health of our many different communities and cultures. We are particularly grateful and proud of our relationship with the Indigenous communities we serve. Our involvement covers remote communities like Hope Vale, Wujal Wujal, Lockhart, Coen, Laura, Cooktown, and Yarrabah. We believe maintaining these connections to remote communities through medicine and health services is important and has opened up many opportunities to absorb their culture. To mark Alive Pharmacy’s commitment to Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander culture, our Pharmacist in Cooktown, Ruth Nona Renshaw, worked alongside artist Conrad Michael to produce a traditional artwork which represented traditional medicines and health within the Indigenous community in Cooktown. The liver of the black stingray would be eaten to lower cholesterol, the yellow noni fruit used for treating diabetes and the ckuki apple leaves made into a poultice to treat scabies. The blue lines in the centre of the painting represent the wind that blows through Cooktown. We are honoured to have commissioned this beautiful artwork to be part of the Alive Pharmacy Warehouse family. Reproduced with permission from the artist.

CONRAD MICHAEL (1958 - 2019) Born + Cooktown Clan Group + Balngarrwarra Language + Guugu Yimithirr

Conrad is a Balngarrwarra Bama from Normanby River, north-west of Cooktown. His meticulous paintings and artifacts are inspired by traditional stories from his country. In his younger days Conrad was a stockman but turned to painting after collaborating with his wife and artist Helen Gordon during a holiday. Conrad realised that he had talent and from then on continued to paint. Helen and Conrad have exhibited their work in a range of exhibitions and won awards in the Cooktown area.

PREPARING &

NESTING

Bringing a new life into the world is very exciting. In the weeks leading up to the birth you can start to feel scared and overwhelmed, especially if it’s your first child. What can help is to be organised and prepared. One question that new mums are often unsure about is what to bring to the hospital. Here are some tips on what to pack in your bag.

CLOTHES FOR YOU & BABY

Bring a few changes of clothes for yourself. Something comfortable, soft, and easy to breastfeed in if you plan to do so. A dressing gown and comfortable PJ’s are also handy if you’re spending a few nights in hospital. After birth you will be very tender and tired below (ice packs may be helpful here!). Large comfy underwear that will hold a pad are important. After giving birth you won’t feel like bending over to put on your shoes. A comfy pair of slip ons are preferable to shoes with laces, buckles or zips. Thongs are perfect here! Bring a few changes of clothing for bub. Onesie jumpsuits with long arms and legs (hospitals can get cold!), cotton singlets, and soft warm hats are recommended.

BREAST PADS & NIPPLE CREAM/SHIELDS

Leaky milk makers mean a wet mess, so breast pads are a post pregnancy essential. They will save many of your tops being stained with milk. Disposable nursing pads are simple to use, relatively cheap, and convenient, while reusable breast pads keep cost down, and have less of an environmental footprint.

TOILETRIES, MATERNITY PADS & NAPPIES

Bring along your toiletries like soap and toothbrush. Regardless of the way you deliver your baby, you’re likely to experience some vaginal bleeding for up to a few weeks post birth. Tampons and menstrual cups are not recommended for six weeks postpartum. You should pack a good maternity pad, with wings and extra length to help manage until your bleeding eases and you can transfer to a regular pad. A whole pack of newborn nappies and baby wipes. You’ll be surprised as to much stuff can come out of a little new human! Better to have too much than not enough. Don’t forget a good nappy rash barrier cream to protect your little one.

For breastfeeding mothers, nipple shields can protect your nipple from the probability of soreness and pain. If you are not comfortable using shields and prefer to feed baby directly from your nipple 100% pure lanolin creams help with sore/cracked nipples and is safe for your baby. It is also suggested that using your own breast milk and massaging it into your nipple regularly will help his from becoming an issue.

WATER BOTTLE & SNACKS

Keeping up your fluids is super important post-partum. Always have your water bottle filled up and by your side so that you don’t forget to have your required daily intake. Giving birth and breastfeeding requires an incredible amount of energy and burns through the calories. Make sure you have some snacks close by to keep your blood sugar levels up.

TREAT YOURSELF

Did you know? Only 5% of babies are born on their due date.

Most importantly don’t forget to splash out on you in the last few weeks. Treat yourself! Book into the hairdresser, get those nails done, get a facial or even a massage. Enjoy the freedom and fulfilment these little luxuries bring. They will make you feel good and ready to embrace this exciting next chapter of your life.

Now you’re bringing home a new baby from the hospital. There is plenty of tips and advice out there on the basics and how to be prepared. Truthfully, you can never be truly prepared. You don’t need everything at once, but here’s a few things to get you started.

CLOTHING AND BLANKETS

Newborn babies will need several changes of clothing a day thanks to spitting up and nappy blowouts. The following is recommended + Short- and long-sleeved onesies + Nightgowns for use until the umbilical cord falls off + One-piece sleepers—choose ones with zippers to save yourself time and effort! + Socks or booties + Scratch mittens (so baby doesn’t scratch his face with his new little nails) + Light blanket + Dressier outfits (optional, but nice to have)

MEDICAL CARE SUPPLIES

These are some basic infant supplies that you should keep on hand

+ A bulb syringe will help suction out mucous. + Baby scissors or nail clippers will prevent your little one from scratching their face. + An eyedropper or syringe and baby paracetamol + A forehead thermometer on head to keep track of your baby’s temperature and symptoms so you can respond quickly if he or she is sick.

FEEDING & CHANGING NAPPIES

If you choose to breastfeed nursing bras and a nursing pillow are nice conveniences. If you are bottle feeding, you’ll need bottles, teats, and formula. Make sure to check expiration dates on the formula. Follow the formula instructions when making the formula and have a cloth handy for when you burp baby. Baby’s weight can vary quite a bit so you may want to have newborn and infant nappies handy. You’ll need baby wipes, sorbolene (babies skin gets very dry after birth) or baby rash cream in case of nappy rash e.g. Sudocrem.

SLEEPWEAR & PLACE TO SLEEP

The safest place for baby to sleep is in your room, not in your bed. You can choose a crib or a bassinet. The bed will need to be free from fluffy crib bedding and stuffed toys these may pose a danger to your child’s breathing. A onesie pyjama outfit so baby feels snug like in the womb and a light sheet or blanket , temperature dependant is recommended

+Random fact During a Baby’s first year they will go through around 3360 nappie & will sleep for 5400 hours on average!

LOOK AFTER YOURSELF

To care for your baby, you also need to care for yourself. The first few weeks are brutal, compounded by sleep deprivation. Here are a few tips to look after yourself at home with your new baby + Pear juice is important to prevent constipation post-partum. It should be used for up to a week after giving birth + Pre-prepare some frozen meals to take the pressure off having to shop or cook + Schedule grocery home delivery to coincide with your arrival home from hospital
