HELLO! COVID waves and winter be gone – it’s spring time! Time to embrace the outdoors with fresh air and sunshine. How good does it feel when you spot the first Jacaranda flowering for the season, or the wispy flowers popping up across a cane paddock… until you feel that sneeze start to brew. For some of us, spring is tied to asthma and allergy. Many of our southern states experience peak pollination in late spring, Brisbane in January/February and tropical northern Australia, our driest months anywhere from June to September. These are the times when we see asthma and allergy sufferers visit their local Alive Pharmacy for advice on how to get rid of the symptoms associated with these annoying conditions. The first week of September is National Asthma Awareness week. This is a good reminder for asthma sufferers to update their Asthma Action Plan with their GP, go over medication with their pharmacist and look at lifestyle improvements to prevent triggers and continue to manage their asthma. 80% of asthma sufferers also have allergies, and symptoms can present in a number of different ways, varying from person to person. It’s important that you discuss your symptoms with your Pharmacist so that they can offer the best treatment to ensure that allergies and hayfever don’t affect your day-to-day life. Some of the things your pharmacist may recommend include: + Oral Anti-Histamines - fantastic for quick, short term relief. Available as tablets for adults or liquid for children. Examples are Claratyne and Zyrtec. + Decongestant Nasal Sprays - super effective and FAST working. Great for short term relief but can only be used for 3 days in a row. + Steroid Nasal Sprays - great for seasonal allergies and can be used ongoing as a preventative. Examples are Nasonex and Rhinocort. As a side note, best wishes to the riders participating in the Cardiac Challenge this month. Spring is in the air! The new season also means pollen is in the air, which for a lot of us triggers all those annoying allergies. Pollen is just one trigger to an allergic reaction. There are different types of allergies and different triggers for different people. But what exactly is an allergy? It is an immune defence response to a foreign substance that is typically not harmful to your body. The foreign substance is referred to as an allergen. Depending on the allergen, your body’s immune system will attack it. The response may be inflammation, sneezing or other symptoms. Your immune system attacks what it thinks could put your body in danger.

Many of us experience seasonal allergies which are commonly known as hay fever. The more scientific name is allergic rhinitis. This affects around 18% of Australian children and adults and it generally occurs around certain times of the year, usually spring as there’s an increased amount of pollens in the air from wind-pollinated plants, such as trees, grasses, and weeds. Seasonal allergies are less common during winter, however, it is also possible to experience this type of allergy all year round. Allergies are common and usually not harmful, but there are severe allergies that can be life-threatening. Severe allergies can cause anaphylaxis which can occur within seconds or minutes when exposed to an allergen. For example, peanuts or bee stings. If this ever happens seek immediate medical assistance. Most people who are aware of their severe allergy will generally carry an EpiPen in case of emergency. This will counter the allergic reaction until medical help arrives. Food allergies trigger a different response in the body. A food allergy will trigger swelling, hives, nausea, and fatigue, unlike seasonal allergies which commonly cause sneezing and watery eyes. A lot of us do not realise we have a food allergy until we consume it and discover we may be affected by the allergen. In recent years there has been an increase of nearly double hospitalisation numbers related to the exposure to a food allergen which presented in a severe allergic reaction. The general public have been putting off seeking advice about potentially severe allergies which has contributed to this increase in allergy related hospitalisation. A response in your skin may also be a sign or symptom of an allergy. It may also be a direct result of exposure to an allergen. For example, if you eat food that you are allergic to you may experience a tingling in your mouth and throat and develop a rash. Direct skin contact with an allergen is referred to as contact dermatitis. This could happen if you touch something you are allergic to like a plant or cleaning product. A rash isn’t the only type of reaction to skin allergy. Your skin can react with eczema, hives, itching, swollen eyes and more. Many allergies can be treated with medications like antihistamines to control the symptoms. More often than not the medication can be purchased over-the-counter. Depending on the severity on the allergy, a doctor’s prescription may be necessary. 1. Bees and pollen can cause allergies.

There are many shared symptoms between an allergy and the common cold. Deciphering the difference between the common symptoms can be difficult. However, there are different symptoms of the condition that will help you distinguish the difference. Allergies can cause rashes and itchy eyes which is not a typical symptom of a cold. If you develop body aches and a fever you are more likely dealing with a cold. Sneezing and a runny nose is a common allergic reaction, however if you are producing a thick, yellow discharge from your nose, you’re probably dealing with a sinus infection rather than an allergy.

Prolonged periods of allergy related symptoms can impact your immune system. When your immune system has been compromised you are more likely to pick up viruses when you encounter them. This includes the common cold. A stubborn cough can be a symptom of an allergy which is a result of the body’s overreaction to allergens. This type of cough is not contagious and usually linked to seasonal allergies. If you are still unsure if you are dealing with an allergy or a cold seek advice professional medical advice from your Pharmacist or GP.

WHAT IS AN ANTIHISTAMINE?

Antihistamines block histamine release from mast cells, thus reducing allergy symptoms. Both sedating and non-sedating antihistamine tablets are available without a prescription. Antihistamine nasal and eye sprays can also be used for more localised symptoms, and when an antihistamine alone doesn’t give sufficient relief. Corticosteroid nasal sprays such as Nasonex or Rhinocort are effective for treatment of moderate to severe allergic rhinitis when used correctly. Combination therapies (Intranasal cortisol steroid spray and antihistamine) are used for treatment of moderate to severe allergic rhinitis and offer the advantages of both medications. Additionally, certain strains of probiotics work on T helper cells in the gut to balance and reduce immune reactions thus helping allergies such as Inner Health Hayfever Relief.

WHY HAS MY ANTIHISTAMINE STOPPED WORKING?

Many people use the same antihistamine successfully over long periods of time, then they find it no longer relieves their symptoms. This can be due to your body not reacting to the medication in the same way, or the worsening of your allergic symptoms. There are many medications to choose from and your Pharmacist can assist with finding a suitable alternative.

September 1-7 is National Asthma Awareness week. Those who have allergic rhinitis aka. Hay fever are three times more likely to have asthma and more than 80% of allergic asthmatics have allergic rhinitis.

ASTHMA TRIGGERS CAN INCLUDE:

Asthma is a medical condition that affects the airways. From time to time, people with asthma find it harder to breathe in and out, because the airways in their lungs become narrower – like trying to breathe through a thin straw. There is no cure for asthma, but it can usually be well controlled. Most people with asthma can stay active and have a healthy life. Asthma is a significant problem in Australia. We have a high rate of people who suffer from asthma compared to other countries. Some asthmatics can have their asthma triggered by allergens like dust, pet hair, high levels of pollen or exposure to mould. It can be hard to manage asthma if your allergies are not managed well. It is possible to reduce the affects of asthma by avoiding or reducing exposure to certain allergens that act as triggers. Your GP will be able to identify possible triggers and perform allergy tests.

There are two main allergy test types – skin prick and blood tests. These identify antibodies specific to allergens. Sometimes an alternative testing method is used, called scratch testing, used when greater sensitivity is needed. This action pushes gallons of blood to every part of your body. Your blood carries oxygen, hormones, other compounds, and a host of essential cells. Your heart has a never-ending workload, so your heart’s health is very important to living your best life.

The working function of your heart can be brought down due to poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, infection, unlucky genes, and more. The most common cause is the accumulation of pockets of cholesterol-rich gunk inside the arteries called plaque. Your body naturally produces this cholesterol-rich gunk, but when you have an unhealthy lifestyle your body produces more than it needs, resulting in high cholesterol levels. This limits the blood flow that nourishes the heart. This condition is referred to as a coronary heart disease. In Australia, approximately 443 hospitalisations per day are due to coronary heart disease.

Carpet may feel cushy under your feet or work as an interior design choice, but in the bedroom where you spend around eight hours of sleep, carpet is not the best choice. Carpet can be a haven for dust mites and if installed over concrete the carpeting can interfere with the evaporation of moisture. This contributes to more dust mites and mould, which both thrive in high levels of humidity and even more so in our tropical environment. Choose bare floors or area rugs. Rugs can still house dust mites, but a better option to fully carpeted floors. Vacuum at least once a week, but if possible, daily. 3 HOUSE PLANTS? THINK AGAIN.

Indoor plants are great for cheering you up on a dreary day and can improve your air quality but can be surprisingly irritating. Many indoor plants are the culprit for mould spores that live in their warm and wet dirt. Avoid overwatering them to keep the mould away. Keep an eye out for rotten leaves as it can be a sign of overwatering or disease. By the way, fake or silk plants are not a good substitute as they are notorious dust collectors.

TURN ON YOUR AIRCONDITIONER

Running your air-conditioner is a great way to prevent pollen from entering your home, as long as your filter is clean. Airconditioning benefits allergy sufferers by reducing the humidity in your house while keeping allergens out. The filter rating on an air-conditioner will give you an indication as to how well it will trap particles. Filter values range from 1 to 20 and trap particles from 0.3 microns to 10 microns. The higher the value, the better it can trap smaller

particles. However, a lot of us are concerned about the electricity costs associated with running air-conditioning for long periods of time. Another option is to at least leave your windows closed until the afternoon. Pollen is often at its highest levels in the morning. Avoid using the fan as it blows any pollen around the room.

AIR OUT NEW PURCHASES

Like that new smell? It might trigger your allergies. Packages for your new TV or computer can emit chemical fumes causing runny noses and itchy eyes. Most irritants given off new products will fade over time. Breathing low levels of these fumes over long periods of time can increase the risk of health problems. It is best to take new products out of their packaging to allow them to air out. Air them out in your garage or a well-ventilated area before you bring it into your home.

SCRUB YOUR BATHROOM

You know that green stuff in your bathroom? It gives off spores that become airborne causing sneezing, wheezing and other allergic reactions. Give your bathroom a good scrub with a combination of a cup of bleach to 4 litres of water. This will remove the mildew from surfaces. Other damp places in the bathroom also develop mildew like your bathmat. We recommend that after use, hang your bathmat over your shower rod to dry and wash weekly. Besides scrubbing your bathroom and making sure you dry your bathmat, make sure your exhaust fan works and change the air filters regularly. This will help improve the conditions in your bathroom to stop mould growing in the first place.

EXERCISE LATER IN THE DAY

You are a morning person and like to get your exercise out of the way for the day, but your allergies act up during your work out? Between 5am and 10am is the prime time for pollen counts to be at their highest. Consider moving your work out to later in the day to avoid the flowering plants that would aggravate your allergies.

KALE, SWEET POTATO & BEETROOT HEART HEALTHY SALAD LEAVE YOUR SHOES AT THE DOOR

Serves 4

‘These boots are made for walking’ and tracking in pollutants, allergens, and toxins into your home. Allergy sufferers should keep their shoes in the foyer, garage, or laundry after you have wiped them briskly on a mat. This will help keep the spores that would otherwise be brought in with your shoes. Also, if you store you shoes in a closest with coats and jackets you may want to reconsider this as pollen can spread to your coats as well.

GIVE TEDDY + FRIENDS A BATH

Your child’s favourite teddy might be harbouring allergyproducing dust mites. If you can manage to get Teddy away, you can eliminate the mites by washing your child’s teddy weekly in hot water. You could always spot clean or freeze clean. Spot cleaning is difficult, but you can kill off dust mites by using laundry detergent with warm water and wipe down the plush toy. It’s best to place the toy in the dryer for a few minutes, preferably in a pillowcase to get rid of any mites still hanging out.
