HAPPY APRIL! There’s so much to celebrate about April. Easter, school holidays and commemorating our wonderful ANZACs. April is also an excellent time to start thinking about your preventative health – and your Alive Pharmacist is here to help you with this.

The Alive Pharmacy Warehouse April catalogue highlights a number of preventative health checks that you should be thinking about through each stage in your life. There are some that I specifically want to highlight to you: Skin checks: Skin cancer accounts for the largest number of cancers diagnosed in Australia each year. The good news is it’s very treatable as long as it’s detected early. You should book in for a skin check once a year; a GP referral isn’t necessary.

Vaccinations: Is your vaccination schedule up to date? Are you planning on travelling or hosting visitors from interstate over the coming months?

It’s time to think about booking in for your flu shot and perhaps even your Whooping Cough vaccine.

Bone density test: Bone density testing is used to measure the strength of your bones and is especially important in women who have gone through menopause and have lost the protective effect of oestrogen. Talk to your GP about booking a bone density test and ask your Alive pharmacist about the vitamins and minerals you need to maintain bone density post menopause.

HEALTH BY MILESTONE As women age their health needs change.

Here are some general health tips women should focus on in each decade of their life.

Terrific Twenties & Flirty Thirties:

Physical activity in your twenties is important in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight, strength in your bones and a healthy cardiovascular system. While working out your muscles it’s never too early to start focusing on keeping your pelvic floor muscles healthy and strong.

Strong, well activated pelvic floor muscles help support your bladder, uterus and bowel and allow the muscles around the urethra to function properly.

Brush up on your nutrition knowledge. Eat a wide range of healthy foods and drink plenty of water.

Be breast aware. Know what looks and feels normal for your breasts throughout your cycle. Be familiar with your vulva. Let your doctor know if you find any changes in appearance or begin to experience sensations like burning, itching, or stinging.

Fabulous Forties & Nifty Fifties

During your forties, your metabolism can slow down, and you might notice changes in your menstrual cycle as you head towards menopause. Your metabolism slows as you age which can make it easier to put weight on and harder to lose it.

Along with eating healthily, being active can help you achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Besides maintaining bone mass and blood pressure, it will also help with your cholesterol levels. As you get older heart health becomes more important.

Once menopause begins, your bone density begins to decrease as your body produces less oestrogen.

You can have bone density tests to monitor your bone, especially if you have family history of osteoporosis. At this time in your life your doctor will likely advise you to have breast screens every two years, and you should start to complete a bowel cancer screening. It should be sent to you every two years in the mail when you are in your fifties.

Can I get pregnant during my period?

While odds for pregnancy are lower on the days you are on your period, they aren’t zero. Ovulation can vary based on a woman’s cycles. Some women have longer cycle around 35 days and others around 21 days.

Cervical Screening Test every five years after you turn 25.

Dental check-ups as often as advised

Eye health tests as often as advised

Can I have my blood pressure and cholesterol checked in the pharmacy?

You can have your blood pressure taken in the pharmacy by a pharmacist or pharmacy assistant. Having a blood pressure machine in the pharmacy is quite common, however checking your cholesterol requires a particular machine and not all pharmacies provide this service. It is best to contact your pharmacy first to see if they have this service available or not.

How can I remember to take my medication?

A medical check if you notice any changes in your breasts

Vaccinations as needed

A skin check

Vulva health check

Regular blood pressure and cholesterol checks

An annual sexual health check if you’re sexually active

VACCINATIONS UPDATES FOR 2021 + Annual influenza vaccination is recommended for all people ≥6 months of age. It is the most important measure to prevent influenza and its complications.

+ The seasonal pattern of influenza was different in 2020 due to a number of factors. It is not possible to predict what the 2021 influenza season will be like.

+ Influenza vaccinations must be recorded on the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR).

+ Protection after vaccination is generally expected to last throughout the year. Optimal protection occurs in the first 3 to 4 months after vaccination.

+ Administration of an influenza vaccine and a COVID-19 vaccine should be a minimum of 14 days apart. + Ideally, people should receive their annual influenza vaccination before the start of the influenza season. The period of peak influenza circulation is typically June to September in most parts of Australia.

+ Re-vaccination later in the same year is not routinely recommended, but may benefit some individuals due to personal circumstances, such as travel or pregnancy.

There are different ways we can suggest to help remember to take medication/vitamins. One idea is to take your medication at the same time each day, possibly with an activity you do regularly for example having with breakfast or a cup of coffee or tea. Dosette devices are available to purchase, many of which have separate compartments for the days of the week and separated into sections for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and bedtimes. At Alive Pharmacy Warehouse we have our own app which you can download and then manage your medication.

You can message the pharmacist directly for any requests and even book vaccinations with the pharmacy. Another idea to help remember to take medication is to have your pharmacist pack Dose Administration Aids for you.

This service allows your medications to be packaged into weekly packs which are clearly set out with the days of the week and the times to take the tablets. This makes it very easy to avoid missing doses!

RETINOL

A synthetic derivative of vitamin A. It’s considered the ‘gold-standard’ ingredient in skin care as it alters the behaviour of aged cells to act in a more youthful manner. It smooths and refines skin texture, enhances radiance, and treats aging. However, it does make you more sun sensitive so it’s important to use sunscreen after applying.

NIACINAMIDE

Also known as vitamin B3. This active ingredient has multiple benefits for skin.

It is a water-soluble vitamin that helps minimise the appearance of enlarged pores, improves uneven skin tone and strengthens a weakened surface.

VITAMIN C

Also known as L-ascorbic acid, vitamin C is an antioxidant that works to protect your skin cells from air pollution, sun damage, and other premature agers. It can brighten skin tone and reduce signs of aging. Keep in mind that using retinol and vitamin C can cause irritation and sensitivity.

HYALURONIC ACID

As we age, we naturally lose collagen and hyaluronic acid, so the skin becomes more dehydrated.

Dry or more mature skin will benefit most from applying hyaluronic acid topically. Even though the word ‘acid’ is in its name it is safe for those with sensitive skin.

POP SOME COLOUR

Feeling a little dull? A small pop of colour can make all the difference, whether it’s a tinted lip balm or a full coloured lipstick. If you have dry lips or fine lines around your lips use a balm or gloss. It’s less likely to accentuate them. Matte lip colours can make your lips look more dry and aged.

MOISTURISERS

Moisturising is important for all skin types and all ages. Moisturisers help support your skin’s natural barrier to keep it healthy and resilient to pollutants. Therefore, it’s less likely to become damaged or infected.

Even if you have oily skin and feel like your moisturiser is too much, try an oil-free moisturiser. Do not forego this in your skin care routine.

SUNSCREEN

When you’re about to step out of the house, applying sunscreen should be the last step in your skincare routine. The bare minimum you need on your face is SPF 15. The effects from UV rays can cause premature aging, worsened acne scars and increased risk of cancer. If you’re planning to work retinol into your skincare routine, then sunscreen is a must.

AVOID TOO MUCH POWDER

A common makeup mistake is too much powder. As you get older you develop fine lines and excessive use of powder can accentuate them. Also, piling on makeup can make you look older. If you have oily skin, using powder is normal to help reduce ‘shine’ however it’s important to avoid getting too carried away with it. Make sure to brush away any residue and blend out any fine lines.
