TIPS FOR A SWEET CHRISTMAS HOST A DIABETIC FRIENDLY CHRISTMAS POWERFUL PROBIOTICS and how they can improve your health

OUR 7 STEP HOLIDAY ACTIVITY GUIDE

DECEMBER

DECK THE HALLS! And before we all knew it the Xmas season has crept up on us again. School is ending, you can smell the holidays and the weather is heating up (I’m dreaming of a White Christmas….) Take the opportunity early to get organised and look after your mental and physical health during these busy months. Here are some helpful hints to do just that: Dietary requirements are often hard to manage at Christmas gatherings. The December edition of LIVE+ discusses how to host a diabetic friendly Christmas to help keep sugar levels stable. Remember that increased blood glucose is not just a consequence of eating sugary foods, you also need to consider foods and drinks that are high in carbohydrate such as fruit, pasta, salad dressings, soft drinks and alcohol. If your loved one is a diabetic then join/ encourage them to do some daily exercise, test their BSL once to twice daily, stock up on NDSS strips at the pharmacy and discuss diabetes management with their friendly Alive Pharmacist. The Alive Pharmacy Warehouse App is now available for Apple and Android in your App store. Just search ‘Alive Pharmacy Warehouse’ and enter the registration code provided to you by your local Alive Pharmacy to get started. This helps you manage your prescriptions, repeats and decreases wait time if you’ve got a busy schedule. Your pharmacy can message you to let you know when prescriptions are ready. The app will also ensure you are ready for e-prescriptions now that the government has started rolling these out. If you’re hosting Christmas this year make sure you visit your local Alive Pharmacy for your essentials + Hand sanitiser and liquid hand soap for your bathrooms (be COVID Safe!) + A good 50+ Waterproof Sunscreen + Insect Repellent + Headache tablets! + Last minute Christmas gifts – fragrance, Natio, Sukin, Darrell Lea etc If you can’t make it in-store, don’t forget you can shop alivepharmacy.com.au from the comfort of your own home! Wishing you all a safe and happy Christmas and Holiday Season. Bring on 2021!

INCREASE YOUR

Christmas fun NOT SUGAR LEVEL

It’s that time of year where we all become very festive and indulge in celebrations and Christmas activities. We all treat ourselves to food and drinks that we wouldn’t eat regularly during other times of the year. For some of us, overindulging in food and drinks can have serious health consequences. Diabetes is a serious and complex condition which can affect the entire body. While there is no cure for diabetes you can live an enjoyable life by learning about the condition and how to effectively manage it.

There are three types of Diabetes TYPE 1

TYPE 2

What is diabetes? When someone has diabetes, their body can’t maintain healthy levels of glucose in the blood. Unhealthy levels of glucose in the blood can lead to long-term and shortterm health complications. Our bodies convert glucose (sugar) from food into energy. The hormone called insulin is essential for converting glucose into energy. Those with diabetes no longer or do not produce enough insulin in sufficient amounts. Their bodies cannot convert the glucose in foods like bread, starchy vegetable, milk and so on into energy. Instead of being converted into energy the glucose stays in the blood and is carried around the body. Diabetes can be managed but there is potential for health complications including heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, limb amputation, depression, anxiety, and blindness. Early diagnosis, optimal treatment, effective ongoing support and management reduces the risk of diabetes-related health complications.

Who is at risk?

Chief Pharmacist

GESTATIONAL

Type 2 diabetes is increasing at the fastest rate of the three types. It is estimated that two million Australians are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is one of the major consequences of obesity. The combination of changes in diet, the food supply chain and massive changes

to physical activity are the main offenders in the increase of type 2 diabetes in Australians. Genetics also plays a part. Those of certain nationalities are at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes including Chinese, South Asian, Indian, Pacific Islander, Aboriginal, and Torres Strait Islander.

Common symptoms + Being more thirsty than usual + Passing more urine + Feeling tired and lethargic + Always feeling hungry + Cuts healing slowly + Itching, skin infections + Blurred vision + Unexplained weight loss (type 1) + Gradually putting on weight (type 2) + Mood swings + Headaches + Feeling dizzy + Leg cramps

Did you know? Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in working age adults

QUESTIONS

WITH

Nick Loukas

Pharmacist , Alive Pharmacy Warehouse

HOST A DIABETIC FRIENDLY CHRISTMAS Are you hosting Christmas this year? Have some guests with diabetes? Here are some things to consider in planning the day’s meals and drinks.

Turkey

Some of us do celebrate with a turkey even if it is more of an American tradition. When carving up the turkey consider removing the skin and dividing up the meat into lightcoloured (breast) and dark (thigh). This reduces the fat intake if your guests choose the light-coloured meat.

Dessert

No Christmas is complete without some dessert. Try serving desserts with single cream instead of double cream if you are serving a dessert that is usually served with cream. Or you can make a custard with a semi-skimmed or skimmed milk. When baking cakes or muffins try using fruit or fruit juice to sweeten your baked dessert.

Vegetables

They are low in calories and help you feel fuller for longer. Boil or steam your veggies over frying.

Drinks

We all like to enjoy a drink or two for Christmas. Give your guests the option of some sugar-free or diet drinks. Juices tend to be high in sugar so don’t let that be your only option as a mixer for your alcoholic beverages. Alcohol can sometimes lower blood glucose levels which may sound like a good thing, but this increases the risk of hypoglyceamia (when blood glucose levels fall dangerously low).

MY PARENTS HAD DIABETES, WHAT ARE THE CHANCES THAT I WILL HAVE IT AS WELL?

Type 2 diabetes has stronger links to family history and genealogy than type 1 with studies of twins showing that genetics play a very strong role in the development of type 2 diabetes. Ethnic groups can also play a role. Along with environmental factors and lifestyle choices. Obesity tends to run in families, and families often have similar eating and exercise habits. You can reduce your chances of getting type 2 diabetes with the right lifestyle choices.

WHAT IS THE NDSS PROGRAM?

The National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS) is an initiative of the Australian Government administered with the assistance of Diabetes Australia. The NDSS aims to enhance the capacity of people with diabetes to understand and self-manage their condition. Diabetes Australia also seeks to support people with diabetes by providing timely, reliable and affordable access to NDSS services. Registration with NDSS is free and open to all Australians who are diagnosed with diabetes. All Alive Pharmacy Warehouses are NDSS agents

I HAVE GESTATIONAL DIABETES, HOW LIKELY AM I TO BE DIAGNOSED WITH TYPE 1 OR 2 DIABETES?

Gestational diabetes (GD) is a type of diabetes that only happens when you’re pregnant. However, all types of diabetes mean that sugar levels build up in your blood. Your blood sugar levels are usually controlled by a hormone called insulin. If you don’t have enough insulin, or if it’s not working properly, you can develop diabetes. Gestational diabetes happens during pregnancy because your body needs to make extra insulin. GD goes away once you’ve had your baby.

PROBIOTIC

Power No one wants an upset tummy over the Christmas period. Discovering Power Probiotics could be your game changer this festive season. Taking care of the bacteria inside your digestive system could be all it takes for you to not have a bad stomach interrupt your holiday celebrations.

Good bacteria

Probiotics vs Prebiotics

The bacteria in your body outnumbers your body’s cells 10 to 1. Most of these reside in your gut. The majority of the bacteria in your gut are harmless. If anything having the right gut bacteria can have a number of health benefits such as:

Probiotics can be confused with prebiotics. Prebiotics are dietary fibres that help feed the friendly bacteria already in your gut. The most common groups of probiotics include Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. Each group is comprised of different species and each species has many strains.

+ Weight loss + Improved digestion + Enhanced immune function + Healthier skin

Flora

Did you know?

The community of micro-organisms in your gut is called the gut flora or microbiota. The activities of the gut flora resemble those of an organ. They perform many functions that are important to your health like manufacturing vitamins, including vitamin K and some of the B vitamins. They also turn fibres into short-chain fats which feed your gut wall and perform many metabolic functions. Your gut flora is very sensitive to your diet and studies have shown that an unbalanced gut flora is linked to numerous diseases like:

The average adult has between one to two kilograms of bacteria in the intestine at any one time

+ Obesity + Type 2 diabetes + Metabolic syndrome + Heart disease + Colorectal cancer + Alzheimer’s + Depression The gut flora sometimes referred to as the ‘forgotten organ’ when in correct balance stimulates your immune system and strengthens your gut wall. This helps prevent unwanted substances from entering your body and provoking an immune response. Keep that gut flora happy this festive season. It’s working hard to keep your body going strong!

PROBIOTIC RICH FOODS Probiotics contain the friendly type of bacteria that can provide health benefits when taken. Probiotics are also present in foods that are prepared by bacterial fermentation. These foods include:

1.3kg

1.5kg

Collectively the weight of your probiotic bacteria found inside your body weighs more than your brain

Stylish SCENTS Perfume - or as men like to refer to it cologne - is one of the top gifts for Christmas. It can be hard to buy the right scent for someone else or even for yourself. It can be a bit overwhelming. Sometimes the best thing is to use the KISS approach. Keep it Simple, Stupid! Perfume echoes FASHION! If you’re buying for someone else, you will generally notice how that person dresses. This will help with your approach to picking a perfume as a gift

THE CLASSIC LOOK

THE FLOWER POWER LOOK

THE DISCREET LOOK

Classic, timeless, chic and elegant style

Macro-flower fabrics, bright colours

Pastel, simplistic

This style includes classic suits, tweeds, trench coats, blouses, pencil, or ballerina skirts. The fougere family of fragrances suits the ‘classic look’. This family of fragrances has a sweet topnote with the scent of lavender flowers. Lavender is particularly fashionable these days. Pleasant for both women and men.

A more powerful hyper-floral fragrance will suit i.e. heavy floral. Their personality may be more on the dramatic side. Aside from a flowery dress style they like to express themselves through bright colours, sharp lines, and larger scale accessories. For a not so ‘hyper’ but still floral style fragrance a rose-based fragrance is more suitable. Or an orange-blossom based scent will also do the trick.

For those who have a more discreet way of dressing. They lean towards wearing pastel colours and soft half-tones. They express themselves with a feminine style using soft fabrics that drape over their natural shape. A softer, more ‘powdery’ floral fragrance would be more suitable. They are softer and more delicate. A fragrance that is not overpowering, that is gentle and leave a romantic scent of soft and sweet scents.

They wear more darker tones. They appear to have a rebellious side. Expressing their need to be unconventional and non-conformist. A chypre or woody fragrance would suit those with this dress style. Fragrance is a part of them making a statement. They like their scent to be sweet and playful with an edgy leather scent.

A woody and aromatic fragrance would suit those with this relaxed dress style. Fresh, natural, and simple. Notes of zesty citrus and lavender, sweet spices, and oriental woods. Cedar, patchouli, pine, and sandalwood are more scents that suit this dress style. Sometimes they may go for scent body lotion instead as it is less overpowering than wearing a perfume.

Christmas Holidays GAMES & ACTIVITIES

HOLIDAY PHOTO CARD

Leading up to Christmas all the kids have finished school for the year. Now all you have to do is keep them entertained before they drive you CRAZY! Spend a fun afternoon getting into the Christmas spirit and make some homemade Christmas cards. Break out some paint and glitter! It may get a little messy, but it will keep the littlies occupied and happy.

Take action+ Find an afternoon that you can take some nice photos of the family to add to your homemade Christmas greeting cards.

There are a lot of people in the community who like to deck their houses out in Christmas lights. Who doesn’t enjoy looking at the pretty Christmas lights at night? Most communities arrange a night where you drive around to look at all those who have decked out their houses in Christmas lights. This is a fun evening for people of all ages to enjoy.

Take action+ Why not be a part of the action? Deck the outside of your house with Christmas lights and have the Cavalcade visit your house. Use some solar powered lights that way it won’t hike up your electricity bill.

GINGERBREAD DECORATING

The Christmas season calls for GINGERBREAD! Decorating a gingerbread house is a fun way to get a Christmas day dessert ready prior to the day itself. Gingerbread house decorating has become a common activity during the Christmas holidays and pre-made kits can be purchased from the supermarket. Or you could go that extra mile and make the gingerbread house from scratch before decorating it. This is a good option if you want to control the amount of ginger flavour inside the bread.

Take action+ If gingerbread house decorating is a little too much, there are also gingerbread men decorating kits available. This is good for those who have younger children or aren’t a big fan of eating gingerbread but want to still part take in the decoration activity.

CAVALCADE OF LIGHTS

WATER GUN FIGHT

Most of us have experienced quite a hot Christmas Day. While cranking the air conditioning is an option, most of us don’t want a huge electricity bill as a result. A fun activity for all ages is a good ol’ fashion water gun fight! It’s a great tradition to start where everyone can get involved and stay cool for a portion of Christmas Day.

Take action+ You can find water guns in most retail stores that sells toys, and they can be reused year-after-year. You can also make up buckets of water balloons. That can be a bit messy afterwards with the leftover balloons left all over the backyard. Have a reward at the ready for those who pick up the most leftover balloons at the end of all the fun.

TREASURE GIFT OPENING

With all the excitement around Christmas, kids can get a little amped up over their gifts. We’d like them to enjoy the excitement a little longer as they open their gifts Christmas morning. You can turn present opening into a game.

Take action+ Purchase at least two pairs of oven mitts. Have a race to see who can open their present first. You’ll be surprised at how hard it is to unwrap gift wrapping while wearing these, and how funny it is to watch!

ICE SKATING

Ice skating seems a bit far fetch in Australia, doesn’t it? This time of year, ice skating rinks tend to pop up as ice skating is a typical activity associated with Christmas for those who live in a country where they experience winter during December. A winter feel for Christmas is created with temporary ice skating rinks and is a novelty for us Aussies who have Christmas in Summer.

With the remaining milk heat in pan over medium heat. Add heated milk slowly to earlier mixture. Constantly whisk until smooth and well combined. 3. Transfer combined mixture into another saucepan and cook over low heat, while stirring, until mixture thickens. Stir through maple syrup then transfer to a bowl.

Take action+ Check out your local shopping centres and see if they have a pop-up ice-skating rink planned. They generally aren’t available year-round so it’s a great time to take advantage of it and beat the heat.

FACETIME

Due to COVID-19 a lot of us aren’t able to spend time with our loved ones who live further away. Thanks to technology we can still connect with them over the holiday season and on Christmas Day.

Take action+ Set up a time when everyone is available for a video call. Remember to take into consideration time differences. If you’re wanting to connect with multiple people at once an easy way to do it is to utilize Facebook’s messenger video call option. As long as you’re friends on Facebook you can video chat with up to 6 people.

CALORIE FRIENDLY CHRISTMAS TRIFLE 9g sachet low-kilojoule raspberry jelly crystals
