Intergenerational Transfer in Action: “Carriers
of the Torch” with a Storied Statesman
As part of its milestone 25th Anniversary celebration, the Fellowship Open proudly welcomes Ambassador Andrew J. Young for “Carriers of the Torch”—an intimate, nextgeneration confabulation and reside chat that honors legacy while lighting the path forward. A lifelong advocate for justice, peace, and opportunity, Ambassador Young brings a profound and enduring presence to this year’s festivities.
Renowned for his towering role in American history and global diplomacy, Ambassador Young was a key strategist and trusted advisor to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the height of the civil rights movement. His moral courage helped shape some of the most pivotal moments in the nation’s march toward equality. Later, as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, he became a trailblazer on the world stage— championing human rights, economic development, and peaceful international cooperation.

Now, at a time when the need for generational dialogue has never been greater, Ambassador Young returns to Milwaukee to share his re ections with emerging leaders and changemakers. “Carriers of the Torch” will o er a rare and personal opportunity to hear from a statesman whose life has exempli ed conviction, compassion, and public service.

This moment aligns seamlessly with the mission of the Fellowship Open—to elevate those who lead with courage and to equip young people with the tools to build a more just and inclusive world. As Ambassador Young engages in this reside conversation, his voice will echo not only the struggles of the past, but also the possibilities of the future.

In honoring Ambassador Andrew Young, the Fellowship Open continues its tradition of bringing legendary leadership into real-time connection with the next generation—ensuring that the torch of purpose is not only passed, but carried with vision, strength, and unity.

Hall of Fame Tradition Continues with Olympian Homecoming
As the Fellowship Open celebrates 25 years of legacy and impact, this year’s Silver Anniversary marks a special chapter in its Hall of Fame tradition— welcoming back three legendary Olympians for an unforgettable homecoming. 2019 Honoree Jackie Joyner-Kersee, 2022 Honoree Dr. John Carlos, and 2018 Honoree Tommie Smith will return to Milwaukee not simply to be recognized, but to engage in a powerful Olympic Symposium at the historic Pettit National Ice Center.
Widely regarded as the premier site for Olympic training in Wisconsin, the Pettit Center has long been a cornerstone of U.S. athletic excellence as all of the American speed skaters who have competed in the last six Winter Olympics have trained or competed there. With the ice set to host trials for next year’s Olympics at Milano Cortina, the venue sets the stage for a confabulation of global icons whose stories have shaped both sports and society. The three athletes—each a trailblazer in their own right—will headline a conversation on the intersection of athletic excellence, activism, and legacy. Their presence re ects the continued mission of the Fellowship Open: to elevate and empower the next generation of leaders to e ect real change in their communities.
Over the last 25 years, the Fellowship Open has grown into a distinguished family reunion of impact-makers and roll call of Hall of Famers across nearly every sport. From NFL greats like Jerome “The Bus” Bettis and LeRoy Butler, to baseball icon Hank Aaron, and basketball legends like Oscar Robertson and Bob Dandridge, the list of honorees underscores a powerful truth: excellence is not just achieved by medals or retired jerseys, its measured by a heart for serving those around you.

The Olympian homecoming is more than a celebration—it’s a call to action. As the Fellowship Open continues its commitment to youth mentorship, educational advancement, and community development, this Silver Anniversary reminds us that the torch of leadership is best passed hand to hand, from generation to generation.

Jubu Smith to Close Out Fellowship Open’s Silver Soiree with Legendary Sound
As the Fellowship Open celebrates its milestone 25th anniversary, the Silver Soiree will close with a performance from internationally renowned guitarist and vocalist John “Jubu” Smith—bringing decades of musical mastery to the grand nale of a historic weekend.

An acclaimed sideman and bandleader, Jubu began his career as a harmony vocalist in his father’s Oakland gospel quartet before picking up the bass and guitar. By age 19, he was playing guitar for the iconic R&B band Tony! Toni! Toné!, whose front man, Raphael Saadiq, was a longtime childhood friend from the Bay Area quartet circuit. His soulful playing helped de ne the band’s signature sound.
Smith spent a decade with Tony! Toni! Toné! before joining Whitney Houston’s touring band, and for the past 15 years, he’s performed internationally with Maze featuring Frankie Beverly. In between, he lent his unmistakable guitar work to artists like Luther Vandross, Mary J. Blige, Boyz II Men, Toni Braxton, George Duke, and George Benson. Jubu’s artistic prowess can be recognized on global hits that have been played across the world, from the iconic opening ri of Anniversary by Tony! Toni! Toné! to the famed live guitar solo on Maze’s Golden Time of Day.
With a career that spans gospel roots, R&B royalty, and global stages, Jubu Smith is the perfect artist to bring the Fellowship Open’s Silver Anniversary to a powerful, soul- lled close—reminding us that music transcends time and continues to inspire.
Thank you to Attorney John Daniels Jr. and Mrs. Irma Daniels for underwriting the Silver Anniversary Celebration’s Entertainment lineup.

Dressed in their HBCU pride, the Fellows cheered from the stands while engaging with alumni and supporters who champion the legacy and impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
Saturday was a full day of action and ser vice. Aaron Lee: A Leader on the Rise

We are proud to recognize Aaron Lee for his selection as an Ambassador for the My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) Alliance—a prestigious honor that celebrates his leadership, purpose, and commitment to advancing equity for boys and young men of color.
Launched by President Barack Obama, the MBK Alliance unites leaders, organizations, and communities to close opportunity gaps and improve life outcomes. As an ambassador, Aaron joins a national network of changemakers working to create a more just and inclusive future.
Aaron’s journey has been been nothing short of transformative. He had the honor of representing Morehouse College as a student speaker at the Thurgood Marshall College Fund’s DevCon in Atlanta, addressing more than 500 students from across the country. His words of a rmation and encouragement re ected the power of purpose and the importance of representing something greater than oneself.
Just days later, he competed in the ScholarPitch competition at the HBCUniverse Brunch ATL, where he boldly shared his vision—and walked away with a $5,000 scholarship. More than a win, it was a moment of validation that preparation, passion, and opportunity can open doors to meaningful success.
From thought-provoking conversations to lasting connections, Aaron’s belief in the brilliance and boldness of the next generation of HBCU leaders was rea rmed. As he continues to pursue his mission of building a future where technology and aviation create new paths for underserved communities, we are proud to support and celebrate his journey.
Sidbewendein Bouda: Greener Future, Smarter Farming
As an MKE Fellow and a third-year Medical Engineering student at the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay, Sidbewendein Bouda is combining technology and sustainability to address one of agriculture’s most pressing challenges: water scarcity. With a deep passion for developing practical solutions to real-world problems, Bouda introduced a groundbreaking Smart Irrigation System in 2024 designed to optimize water usage while increasing crop yields—particularly in arid regions.
His innovative system stands out with its thoughtful integration of features that support both precision and convenience.
Key capabilities include:
Real-time monitoring and graphical display of soil moisture levels
Alert noti cations for excessive moisture
Manual and automatic control of the water pump
Customized irrigation schedules based on crop growth stages
Weather-based scheduling to reduce unnecessary watering
Live updates on pump activity (e.g., “Water pump turned o for upcoming rain!”)
Farmers using Bouda’s system report healthier crops and larger harvests, a testament to the system’s e ectiveness in conserving water while enhancing productivity. His work not only addresses a critical global issue but also lays the foundation for a more sustainable and tech-forward future in agriculture.
Sidbewendein Bouda’s journey as an innovator is just beginning, and his contributions already demonstrate the impact of combining engineering with purpose-driven leadership.

Isaiah Ezemba: Strengthening A Financial Future

With a natural gift for public speaking and a deep sense of compassion, Isaiah aims to uplift others, helping them realize and reach their full potential.

When Milwaukee Youth Change History: A Moment of Pride, Purpose, and Power
The Philadelphia Inquirer highlighted an extraordinary achievement by students from the Sports Analytics Club at Golda Meir High School. These young scholars played a pivotal role in helping legendary baseball player Dick Allen receive long-overdue recognition as an inductee into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Their work went far beyond numbers. By combining advanced metrics, historical comparisons, and cultural context, the students told a powerful story—one that had been overlooked for decades, and built a compelling case for Dick Allen’s legacy.

This project was more than an academic exercise; it was an assignment in building and preserving legacy. It re ects the mission of the Fellowship Open. empowering young people to take the lead in shaping history and uplifting their communities.
Dick Allen was not only a great player, but a champion during a time that required unwavering determination. The students at Golda Meir understood this and made sure the world did too. Educators and mentors at the school created the space for brilliance to thrive, and the SACP scholars seized the opportunity to make a lasting impact.

Milwaukee continues to raise voices, shift narratives, and build bridges, one brilliant mind at a time—a powerful reminder to never underestimate what youth can achieve when given the tools and trust to lead.
