Quote of the month brought to you by our special featured guest; Jacqui Noske, founder of Against the Ropes Boxing gym.

As soon as it came out of her mouth I knew it was going to be the intro and main theme of this article. It’s so succinct and provides such a simple (not easy) answer to so many of our human ailments.

I know in my personal life, when I start to feel a bit ‘off’, I can usually track it back to not having done any exercise lately. I can be staring at a blank screen for days trying to ‘force’ creativity which of course pushes it further away.

Switch gears, sweat it out and I ‘magically’ have the answers and flow I was lacking.

We’ll focus today, mostly on Jacqui and her two eldest boys—Abdullah (Abs) (19) and Khaled (16) as they’re the ones I spent the most time with and have the most to do with running the gym.

There are four other children that make up the family unit, each helping with the business in varying degrees.

The first part of the meeting is a tour of the premises.

As we pass by the different sections, Jacqui tells of the humble origins and how they led to the space as it is currently.

“We came here (Hervey Bay) with nothing. It was just me in the car with the kids and the dog.

After a brief stint volunteering with the PCYC boxing program which was promptly shut down due to Covid, she decided to create Against the Ropes (ATR) which started in a simple shed in Kal’ang (2021).

“When life puts you up against the ropes, figure out how to get out of it. This is true in both life and the world of boxing.”

Jacqui explains the origin of the name.

“You learn the skills, how to get off the ropes so you don’t stay there, and how to avoid getting put there in the first place.”

Having moved to the upstairs PCYC in 2022, clues to the incremental nature of the evolution included a chained hoist holding several car tyres.

We joke about it looking like a prop from a Rocky movie and she shares that they had to make

do before they had the resources to kit out the impressive setup boasted today.

We conclude the tour and take a seat near the main ring.

The conversation doesn’t skip a beat. If anything there is a surplus of information and I find myself needing to slow things down and get clarity on events. It seems each time I do, there is a hydra effect with each tangent worthy of its own article.

Boxing is in the blood for Jacqui and her family.

“I’ve been training and teaching since I could walk, pretty much.”

She casually speaks into her origins back in the Northern Territory and how her own hard work and training placed her at the Sydney Olympics supporting her team. There, she experienced an incredibly rare opportunity to meet some of the boxing greats including Muhammad Ali and Evander Holyfield.

Identifying early in her career that a holistic approach would be a significant advantage, she goes on to add health science, herbalism and nutrition to her toolkit alongside her Australian and International boxing qualifications. I’m learning not just about her story but who she is as a person.

Her unquestionable work ethic is something she’s passionate about bringing into the world especially for the youth.

We speak in length (and actually continue to return to this theme many times throughout our time together) about the monumental positive impact boxing can have on troubled youth in particular.

She goes on to share that kids that come from violent backgrounds have a lot of rage and they just want to fight and take it out on someone.

Boxing teaches them to channel this energy in a healthy way.

It teaches them to control their emotions. It teaches them discipline, restraint and self-regulation. It gives them confidence.

Most of all it gives them a place where they belong. A peer group and mentors to look up to.

“I do believe there’s some incredible kids in the bay, they just need a little bit of guidance and a little bit of time. That’s all it is. Nine out of ten kids wouldn’t end up in the wrong crowd if they had the right

The conversation moves more to the boys and their role in the gym.

You might be starting to get the picture that no free passes are given in this family or at ATR. Here, you must EARN your respect.

With the expert guidance and coaching of Jacqui’s vast experience, the boys both reached elite status extremely quickly.

From what I could gather, Abs being the oldest had to earn his stripes first and then pass that down the chain.

He was the first win state and national titles, train at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and travel abroad with the elite team.

Having the mentorship and frustratingly difficult sparring partner of Abs as an advantage, Khaled is the current Australian Champion for his class and ranked #3 in the country.

Both brothers are softly spoken and young men of few words. It seems they’re comfortable letting their actions do their talking.

“Eventually the goal is to turn pro yeah.”

Says Khaled, before going on to explain that Olympic Gold is the next goal.

Already training all over the county including the AIS in Canberra, I have no doubt this is a blueprint, not a whimsical wish.

Jacqui is quick to point out that the titles aren’t nearly as important as the proof. This proves they have a winning method in the gym.

Returning to the troubled youth situation, she shares that all the juniors look up to the boys with absolute adoration and respect. Again, not given but earned. Some of the kids are skeptical at first, then once they see Abs and Khaled train they quickly shift to seeing them as role models.

Jacqui shares how the boys’ story gives hope.

“Just goes to show that it’s possible and you can do anything with your life.

“Even if they don’t want to do boxing, the message is clear that if you work hard you can achieve what you want.” So not just for boxing per se, but a work ethic.

“The lessons you learn through training—discipline, hard work—that recipe you can transfer that to whatever you want.

“At the end of the day we’re just trying to build better people.”

Movement is medicine!

So too is discipline, hard work and an inclusive environment.

A RUN A DAY KEEPS THE DOCTORS AWAY

Kitted out in her visor, sunnies, crop top and sports leggings, there’s not many people who frequent Hervey Bay’s Esplanade that wouldn’t recognise Kate McKean the ‘Happy Running Girl’.

The blond beauty runs every day, around 10km, from the tip of Point Vernon, down to Bayaroma Café where she waves, smiles and stops for a chat with fellow walkers and joggers, especially if there’s a cute puppy to pat.

There’s even a @happyrunnergal Instagram page.

Kate isn’t training for any big marathons; she runs purely for fun and good mental health, unlike her husband Tom who competes at an elite level at Triathlons around Queensland.

Kate is however partial to a good fun run where she loves hanging out with happy and like-minded people.

“Tom is graceful like poetry in motion,” Kate said.

“I’m more like an ugly duckling on caffeine, she said with her infectious laugh.

“It’s not pretty but I do it with gumption, and smile and wave at everybody because when I see people smile, that makes me happy.”

Kate comes from a sporty family with mum, dad and her three brothers all passionate about their respective sports. Having a passion for the great outdoors is just in the blood!

Running is Kate’s addiction.

“You don’t get phone calls or emails so you can just clear your mind and appreciate your surrounds. “We sometimes get so caught up with the everyday noise whether that’s work, family or whatever, and running helps you with that.

“If I need to reset, I’ll go for a run. It makes you appreciate what you’ve got.”

So, when you see the carefree runner full of enthusiasm and zest for life, it’s incredibly hard to believe that the 38-year-old came out the other side of a horrific accident that - for just a moment - took her life.

One morning in 2012 started like any other for the couple who were living a busy city life in Brisbane. A typical day started with Tom, a tradie, going off to work early and Kate going for a jog to unwind and mentally prepare for the busy workday ahead.

Then the unthinkable happened!

Kate had crossed the road and made it safely to the other side when a car mounted the curb, hit Kate and pinned her against a wall.

She was taken to the Royal Women’s Hospital in Brisbane unconscious and near fatally injured.

Kate is a member of the Baptist Church and firmly believes a higher power was watching over her that day.

“I actually died and they brought me back,” Kate said.

“It really was a miracle that I survived - I had so many broken bones and swelling around the brain.”

Kate was in a coma for the next three weeks and while she wasn’t aware of what was happening around her, one of favourite stories told from that time was Tom’s response to the doctors who tried to prepare him for the worst.

“He told them to f#@k off. She’s my wife and she’s going to get through this.

“What a man,” she said of her adored husband.

And he was right!

Kate is one tough cookie, waking up not long after and spending another two months in ICU and three months in and out of hospital after several operations, including on her throat leaving her without the ability to speak for periods of time.

The only sign left of the operation now is a husky voice. With unfaltering support from Tom and her family, Kate learnt to walk again 10 months after the accident with physio twice a week for a year, even with a 30cm titanium rod in her leg.

“My amazing husband would carry me around and carry me upstairs and just do anything for me.

“He stood by me through everything. There were so many ups and downs and he was just amazing.

“My whole family was just so wonderful. I never would have got through this without them.”

The couple made the move from Brisbane to Hervey Bay to focus on Kate’s recovery in a quieter environment which was life changing for the long-time runner.

Kate ditched the antidepressants given to her at the hospital and used Hervey Bay’s Esplanade as her medicine.

Her dad was a big motivator, heading out with her at every opportunity to walk and run about 100 metres at a time, going further and further each day.

“He’d say ‘let’s just get to that tree” then when we finally got to that tree, he would say it again and again- there were a lot of trees!

“The days that I didn’t feel so great I just went slow but I still felt strong because I got up and achieved something.

“Running is my drug. The minute I started walking, and then running, the endorphins kicked in.

“Exercise cannot be rivalled by any drug. Even on bad days, if you can get through the first 15 minutes then you start feeling good – you just must have enough strength to start!”

In November 2020, Kate started running a minimum of 5km each day and has not missed a day since with an average of 85kms clocked up each week.

Chronic fatigue still rears its ugly head but that’s not stopping her.

“I’m from a very sporty family and very competitive so when they told me I wouldn’t be able to run again, I made it my goal to make sure I did.

“Some weeks I’m more physically and mentally tired than others so I just give myself points for getting off the couch.

“If you choose to focus on the negatives you are guaranteed to have a bad day.”

Kate says being dubbed the ‘Happy Running Girl’ by those she has met on the Esplanade for the past few years really does make her happy.

She says even if she can inspire just one person to feel better about their day, she’s happy.

“My advice is don’t dwell on things.

“Find something or someone to help you take a step back and reevaluate. We can’t choose what happens to us, but we can choose how we take it.

“If I spent those years feeling sorry for myself, I’d probably still be on the couch and cranky about life.

“Every day is precious so choose not to waste it.”

Tens of thousands of Australians come together in hundreds of locations every Saturday morning, right across the world, to participate in the extraordinary community-based, volunteer-led, five-kilometre phenomenon called parkrun.

Everyone is welcome to participate – to walk, jog, run, spectate or volunteer – and it doesn’t cost a cent.

From its first Australian event on the Gold Coast in 2011, parkrun has grown to over 400 Australian locations with nearly a million registered participants.

Hervey Bay parkrun started nine years ago and averages a crowd of about 350 participants every week with a mix of locals and visitors from all over the world.

It doesn’t matter where you are from; all you need is your unique bar code to scan on arrival and you’re off and running for your 5km trek at any location around the world.

In Hervey Bay, that’s pounding the pavement of our beautiful Esplanade from the Urangan Pier for 2.5km with the turnaround point across from Seabar 469 in Torquay.

parkrun is a celebration of community and the spirit of ‘getting out there’ and meeting likeminded people which is what Hervey Bay Co-Event Directors Katie Elder and Kaliki James love the most.

Katie is a busy professional who works long hours during the week and was looking for a convenient exercise regime.

Her friends convinced her to give parkrun a go, even though she had never run or jogged before, and the rest is history.

Katie said the nerve-wracking move to sign up that first Saturday morning three years ago literally changed her life.

“When I first started, I was looking at all the people in their active wear and I had my loose baggy clothes on and you think that everyone is watching you but that’s not the case at all,” Katie said.

“I blended in with the crowd and the volunteers were there saying ‘good job’ and ‘well done’ and I thought, well this is okay, I survived!

“Then I went back the next week and shaved five seconds off my time and kept getting a little bit faster each Saturday.”

Katie said it’s a great feeling to see people progressing from a walk to a jog, from jogging to running and then eventually running the entire five kilometres without judgement and with lots of encouragement and good wishes.

“parkrun is completely inclusive, and it has been set up really well to make sure we welcome everyone.

“It doesn’t matter what you do, what you look like or what your fitness level is; just come and have a go because it’s really fun and really easy.”

While some parkrunners try to beat their best time, Katie said the social side is just as important as the walking, jogging and running.

First-timers have a welcome briefing and most have a post-parkrun cafe or meeting point where you can meet and chat with friends, old and new.

“It’s a really good way of maintaining your fitness but an even better way of maintaining your mental health.

“There’s a lot of older people that make up our population and many who still like to run and walk and for some of those people, they might only speak to others at the shops during the week, so this is their chance to come out and see their parkrun friends.

“You see lots of different friendship groups that run together or chat afterwards, so it’s just as much about the social and mental health side of things as it is about the physical side of things, and I think parkrun does that as an organisation really well.”

It’s not a race, there is no time limit, and anyone of any age is welcome to take part.

You don’t have to be a runner or run the course. You can walk every step.

Every parkrun has a Tail Walker who is always the final finisher. The Tail Walker walks the course every week, offering support, encouragement, and if you want, a good old chat.

“No one ever comes last because there’s always volunteers that come last.

“So, no matter how slow you are you can’t come last, and I think for people just mentally knowing that you can’t come last is a big psychological thing, and encourages them to participate.”

If the walking or running isn’t for you, that’s okay. There’s

plenty of opportunities to become part of the parkrun family by volunteering.

There are lots of different roles, such as Timekeeper or Barcode Scanner, cheer on parkrunners as a Marshal out on the course or support the final finishers as Tail Walker.

You can develop skills like problem-solving, public speaking, processing results, sorting tokens, all whilst socialising with new people, making friends and gaining confidence.

“We are always on the lookout for more volunteers and it’s so rewarding.

“I often say now that I can’t go out late on a Friday night because I have parkrun on Saturday morning. It’s a really important part of my life now.

“Once you start you don’t want to stop. It’s a fabulous sense of community.”

Not everyone is a morning person, but the great thing about parkrun is you don’t have to give up an evening or commit to a whole day.

Hervey Bay parkrun starts at 7am, meaning once you have finished, you still have the rest of the weekend ahead of you.

LIZZIE LEARNS TO… WINE AND DINE AT KINGFISHER BAY RESORT

Ihad to laugh as I typed out the title of this month’s column… I’ve been known to enjoy both the wine and the dine elements of many an evening. But never have I had an experience quite like the one I’m about to share with you.

Readers of my column know how thrilled I am every time I get to step out of my little office and embrace a new experience.

This time, however, thrilled doesn’t even come close to describing my reaction to being invited along to one of Kingfisher Bay Resort’s signature events.

As a business-owning mum of two and wife of one, quiet time is in relatively short supply, so the opportunity to carve out just a tiny pocket of quiet in my hectic day-to-day was an absolute dream. Add to that, the tantalising offer of a 5-course degustation with paired wines and an overnight stay… This was literally an offer I couldn’t (and wouldn’t) refuse.

While I was going in blind as far as expectation goes, my anticipation for this assignment was high. I know what a ‘normal day’ at Kingfisher is like, so to think that there was an even more ‘perfect’ perfect day on K’gari? Well, this I had to see…

And so, the day arrived.

It was time to get rolling, and of course there was a mad dash to pack my overnight bag and scoot over to River Heads to Sealink K’Gari’s mainland reception. But what an immediate contrast for the day from then on.

With every new member of staff I encountered, I felt the tension of a hectic morning subside - I could relax knowing that everything was already being taken care of.

This time, the barge journey across the bay felt lightning fast, figuratively speaking. My mind wandered as I looked out over the sprawling ocean and pondered the evening ahead. What would it be like? Would I know anyone there? What if I didn’t know enough about wine to fully participate in the experience?

I guess the only way to answer any of those was to simply immerse in the experience.

The barge arrived at Kingfisher Bay Resort midafternoon, so there was ample time to settle in, explore and unwind before preparing for the evening ahead. I spent an hour or two taking in the scene at my favourite spot of the resort over at the Sunset Bar, and before I knew it, it was time to get all glammed up and ready for the main event - The Allegiance (Cox) Wine Dinner.

Arriving at the ballroom, guests were greeted by cheerful staff, and treated to a glass of a frankly superb glass of prosecco. As I mingled with guests I caught a similar vibe coming from many as what I had felt coming into the experience: hard-working business folk ready to press pause, step out of their busy lives and luxuriate in the sensation of letting go and having the experts take the reins for the evening. And what safe hands we were all in.

As we were shown to our seats, the striking decor was further evidence that we were very much in for a treat. At the front of the room, rolling images of the primary vineyard of our hosts for the evening set the scene. Tim and Sonia Cox, Allegiance Wines’ founders, joined us for the evening to guide us through their signature selections for each course. Joining them

Sitting back and people-watching poolside in perfect weather with an excellent coffee in hand?

Yup, life really doesn’t get much better than this.

What’s most exciting about all this, is that this event is just one of many on the dance card at Kingfisher. Speaking to Andrew Sturges, Kingfisher Bay Resort’s Director of Food and Beverage, it was clear that there’s a definite surge of excitement and unique creative energy coming from the team for all that’s to come. And what’s even better is that, while it’s always been a joy to escape to K’gari for a night or two, now there’s an even more fascinating element we’ve never had the privilege of experiencing before. Lots of surprises ahead for us all.

Packing my bags to head home, I’m met with a familiar pang. It’s always challenging to leave such a magical place. But while my departure may be tinged with sadness, ultimately, like always, I leave with gratitude in my heart, and a huge smile on my face.

at the helm for the evening was Sealink K’Gari’s General Manager, Kane Bassett.

Course by course, Kane and Tim eased us through a culinary journey with effortless charm and heartfelt storytelling. Their passion for their craft was deeply infectious, as is often the way for food and beverage devotees.

First came the fig amuse-bouche paired with more of that delectable Anna Spinato Prosecco. Then asparagus paired with a crisp pinot grigio. A shellfish bisque with chardonnay. Duck with cabernet sauvignon, Beef fillet with Shiraz. A mystery bonus wine (my favourite of the night), and finally, a dessert known only as an ‘edible garden’ paired with a syrupy semillon.

To say we’d been taken on an epic adventure of flavours, textures and artistry would be a complete understatement. The flair, passion and dedication of the kitchen team was evident throughout every dish, with such distinct attention to detail.

And of course, it’s always a joy to uncover the transformation of a dish by its accompanying beverage choices.

What I loved most about this evening though, beyond the fabulous food, the exquisite wines and the incredible service, was the camaraderie. We all came to the dinner as strangers, but thanks to the banquet-style seating and expert hosting, we left as friends, bonded over this shared experience.

As the night drew to a close, I knew I had been a part of something very special indeed. The overwhelming sensation I had from the entire experience was one of generosity - from the welcoming nature of the staff and hosts, to the expansive culinary provisions, to the sharing of wine and knowledge throughout the night.

Then of course, came the equally generous breakfast from Sand & Wood restaurant the next morning. Breakfast here is always a highlight of the Kingfisher Bay Resort experience, and this visit was no exception. Realistically, I was still pretty full up from the night before, so a simple offering was the order of the day. And then all there was left to do was continue the immersion in nature and architecture until it was time to head back to ‘the real world’.

IT’S CHRISTMAS, IT’S 80S, AND IT’S IN APRIL?

“Why do we wait to celebrate the best things in life? Why do we save the fine China for special occasions? And why CAN’T we tell Christmas Stories all year round?!”

These were the thoughts that crossed Tim’s mind as he considered his riskiest proposal yet… an allnew musical for Accent Theatre’s 2024 performance season – VHS Christmas Carol: an 80s Yuletide Rewind.

Tim Holstein is the Co-owner and Executive Producer of Fraser Coast’s very own Accent Theatre Company. He has made a career of experimenting within the arts and pushing the bar when it comes to expectations, and when Tim has a strong idea there are few who can rival his zeal.

“Imagine one of literature’s most famous stories – A Christmas Carol – but told through a lens of neon. Throw in an 80s inspired soundtrack taken straight from a cassette at the bottom of an op shop bargain bin… Oh! and for pre-show we’ll host an 80s themed gameshow!”. Tim hilariously recalls the expressions of bemusement and concern spreading across his fellow committee members faces as he described his proposed Easter holiday production.

“I get it - on paper, a Christmas show outside of the Christmas season seems downright absurd” Tim then described the maelstrom of questions that followed. “What about July? Why April specifically? Why 80s?” This was followed by a simple resolute response “…well, why not?”

It was a simple sentiment, but it rang true. Why not indeed?

You see, although Accent Theatre is a relatively new company to the local theatre scene, their message is clear “Theatre should be for everyone” and Tim was right, the time of year should hold no bearing.

Unsurprisingly, VHS Christmas Carol isn’t about Christmas, but the SPIRIT of Christmas. Much like its 19th century inspiration, its themes of redemption, family, responsibility, and transformation aren’t limited to the Christmas Season either, so why not enjoy it any time of the year… just like the Fine China. PROMELIUS: FOR IMPROVEMENT

If there is one thing all parents can agree on, it’s that we worry about our kids- constantly.

From the moment of conception, we watch to make sure they are growing and developing as they should be, and whilst we all know the range of ‘normal’ is broad in terms of milestones, at times some children need a little more help than others in reaching their full potential. Spotting a motor delay in our kids can be understandably worrying and sometimes we don’t know where to turn to get the help they need.

Often a child’s developing brain simply needs a little extra help to develop new pathways in order to grasp and continue developing certain fine and gross motor skills, and this is where Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI) therapy has proven to show amazing results.

Allan Villappaly, owner of ProMelius saw a need to help these children, “Previously parents with children that needed this service were travelling to Brisbane, which affected the whole family. I saw a need to bring these specialised services to Hervey Bay.”

Allan has completed his Masters Degree in Sport Physiotherapy and another Masters degree in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy. Adding DMI therapy to his list of qualifications, Allan is currently the only practitioner of DMI between Brisbane and Townsville, treating children from as young as 6 months up to 8 years old.

This has prompted him to also complete a Basic and Advanced Paediatric Physiotherapy from Monash University and enrol in a Masters degree in Paediatric Physiotherapy in order to fill the gap in treating our younger population in the region.

Like so many of us who find ourselves on the Fraser Coast, Allan never planned to come and live in Hervey Bay but upon arriving for a 3 month working holiday in 2019, he automatically fell in love with our beautiful

beaches and way of life, forgoing his plans to move to Melbourne.

Now based in a new beachside clinic, ProMelius is getting busier by the day as word gets out. With four other therapists, the ProMelius team is equipped to take on clients of all ages and needs, senior Physiotherapist Alex also being the only Cardio Respiratory Physiotherapist in Hervey Bay.

Not one to sit back and see a need unfulfilled, Allan is a part of the External Advisory Committee for UniSC (University of the Sunshine Coast), who are working on bringing Physiotherapy to the Fraser Coast campus in 2025.

“Currently kids leave school and go down south to study at university, and then don’t want to come back to Hervey Bay. If we can deliver this course in Hervey Bay, you’ll notice a lot more will stay back here and help the community, and that is our vision.”

Intent on making positive change, he sponsors a wide range of teams and local groups, as well as collaborating on his latest project bringing U-Beach (Universal Beach) to Hervey Bay; an initiative launched by CQUniversity to allow people of all abilities access to our beautiful beaches.

“Launched in Bundaberg, they have community beach days, with mats and wheelchairs. So we joined hands with them and thought why not bring this to Hervey Bay. We are in talks with the council and a few community stakeholders and with their support, we will be launching this in the future. Our goal is to sponsor at least a few wheelchairs in the Surf Lifesaving Club for anyone to use.”

MORE THAN A WALK IN THE PARK

In need of some bush medicine? A good hike or walk in the bush might be just the cure to all that ails you, or at least offer a moment in time to be present to wonderous natural beauty and forget the “busy-ness” of life. Whether it be a sense of achievement, the smell of the native flora, or revelling in the beauty of the natural landscape, for many, a walk in the bush becomes their happy place.

For me, there’s no greater remedy for stress than a bush wander. From a mountainy ramble to a rainforest trek or an expansive desert expedition, bush walking can bring a glorious sense of awe for you to immerse in. Let’s not forget, it’s also good to get the heart pumping!

The natural world is always on hand to offer us adventure, so grab your sneakers, your childlike sense of exploration and let’s take a look at five of our region’s nature walks for you to tick off your bucket list! (P.S don’t forget your water bottle!).

1. Cania Gorge National Park

With over eight different walking tracks, you’ll uncover towering cliffs, ancient caves and sheltered gorges adorned with Aboriginal free-hand art. A sandstone wilderness with stunning backdrops, Cania Gorge National Park makes for a pleasant all-day weekend hike.

Take a leisurely stroll by the creek or push your fitness boundaries with a strenuous climb to the Giant’s Chair Lookout. If you’re looking for stunning views, then you can’t go past Castle Mountain Lookout, a 22km return track for the more experienced trekkers, it offers breathtaking (if you have any breath left after the hike) views of Lake Cania.

2. Mt Walsh National Park

Just outside of Biggenden, at the end of National Park Road, is where the summit tracks for Mt Walsh begin. As a warm mountain welcome, you’ll enjoy a lighthearted stroll, through bush with a well-defined trail. The real fun begins as you ascend the mountain. Be prepared to climb over rocks and through tight crevasses. No ropes are needed but hand over hand climbing is required for the last part and although a smidge tricky is well worth it. A paradise to natural beauty, even more visible from the flat mountain top, the summit can be explored quite easily and from this vantage point it’s possible to see out to the ocean and the entire area.

Allow a good half day or full day if intending to hike in surrounding bushland.

3. Tin Can Bay Foreshore Bird Walk

Running from Norman Point to the end of Toolara Rd, this 4km stretch of easily accessible Tin Can Bay

foreshore (wheelchair and stroller friendly) meanders between lawns and beneath shade trees just above the intertidal zone, making it a pleasure for keen and casual bird watchers, as well as for families out for a leisurely stroll or bike ride. With a list of 140 species sighted, it is becoming quite the talk of the town in avid bird watching circles. There are public toilet facilities at each end, and Norman Point has a cute-as-a-button playground, picnic/BBQ facilities. The path is also dotted with picnic shelters and water fountains along the way.

4. Mary Valley Trail

A great way to take in the picturesque countryside of the Mary Valley, the 5km Mary Valley Rail Trail, mainly through state forest, embraces all fitness and skill levels.

Following the old railway corridor, the trail is relatively flat despite the hilly terrain it carves its way through. You can start the trail at either end, and return via the same route. From open grassy woodland, Hoop Pine plantations and rainforest to farmland, the landscapes you’ll encounter are diverse. One of the highlights of the trail is the Bellbird colony that resides permanently in the middle section of the trail. You will come across a world of hidden wildlife, old gullies, water crossings and road crossings while seeing parts of the former railway that once serviced the line. The trail has unique interval markers along the way, to allow you to work out where you are on the trail, which, if you’re like me, can get lost in a brown paper bag, is very handy indeed!

5. Sharon Gorge National Park

Located just 10 minutes outside of Bundaberg heading north on Bundaberg Gin Gin Road you’ll uncover the tranquil, lush green and somewhat tropical rainforest feel that is Sharon Gorge - quite a juxtaposition of being only metres from a main road!

Just under 1km in each direction, you’ll follow the path amidst the wide diversity of plant life down to the Burnett River. The mostly dirt track with a couple of board walk sections, ends with a welcoming bench seat and viewing deck, under the gum trees to sit, watch the water and be treated to the dulcet tones of native wildlife.

So, whether you’re an avid outdoor enthusiast or need a break from the “great indoors”, why not take a hike this weekend and explore the natural landscapes of the Wide Bay Burnett Region.

EXPLORING THE HUMAN AURA

Welcome to April’s edition of The 6th Sense. In this column I explore some of the questions mystically minded readers may have about the spiritual realms.

Today I’m delving a little deeper into the human aura. If you caught last month’s column, you’d have read that the aura is another word for the energy field that surrounds us.

Since we’re comprised of molecules and atoms whizzing at incredible speeds, it’s not surprising that we produce an electromagnetic field. This layer of our aura is called the etheric body, and it can be seen as an edge of energy that follows the outline of the body. When we first see auras, we usually notice this layer of clear, flowing energy.

What makes auras so interesting is that they are more complex than just the electromagnetic field around our physical body. Since everything is energy, and energy can never be destroyed, our feelings and thoughts are also stored in our aura. The aura is like our record keeper. Information about our life’s lessons and even other lives can be gleaned from the spiritual layers of the aura by talented psychics and mediums.

Auras are seen or sensed in different ways. I see them objectively, with my eyes open, and also subjectively, in my mind’s eye through clairvoyance. Some psychics sense the colours of an aura, and the emotions they carry, without actually seeing them.

Once you have practised observing auras, you may see flashes of colour, particularly around the head, shoulders and upper torso. This means that you are tuning into the emotional layer of a person’s aura, and the colours reflect what the person is feeling.

Bright, vibrant colours such as red and orange signal passion, energy, and if in excess, even anger. Colours like blue, green and yellow suggest the person is feeling calm and happy, although too much deep blue can indicate depression. There is no easy way to read a person’s emotional state just by looking at the aura, as it is the overall balance and quality of colours that is important.

Because our emotions change frequently, the colours in this auric layer also change. They reflect our thoughts and feelings in the moment. That’s why they ebb and flow, rather than remaining constant. If a person is worried or spending too much time ‘in their heads’, the energy around their head may seem a little fuzzy or dull. A dull patch can also signal a headache or confusion. Be aware that the colours you are wearing will also create colours in your aura. For example, dark blue clothing creates a warm orange energy in the aura.

Beyond the emotional and mental layers of our aura are the spiritual layers. One of these is known as the causal body, and it is believed memories and patterns of other lives are stored here. Our spiritual

colours reflect our soul’s vibration and are less likely to change much over one lifetime. This is because significant spiritual advancement occurs over a longer period than the span of one life. Deep purple in the aura signifies a person with a keen commitment to their spiritual growth, while yellow or gold indicates teaching and learning. Red, in the spiritual layer can also indicate the gift of mediumship.

Next month, I’ll explore how our relationships affect our auras and why it’s important to protect our energy fields. There really is so much to share about this subject.

THE 6TH SENSE

ACTIVE FISH ARE FEEDING UP

April is a fantastic month of fishing as the inshore and offshore scenes fire for those targeting reef fish along with the bay for pelagics. The creeks and Sandy Straits also see some great fishing. Something for everyone!

BURRUM

Plenty of Bream, whiting and flathead have been reported out at Burrum Heads along with some nice grunter and Barra .The mud crabs are still running in the river so throwing a few pots in will also be worth a go.

POINT VERNON

Around Gatakers squire, sweetlip, blackall and grunter have been taken on soft plastics and cut baits fished into the reef. Early mornings have been the best with most fish being landed just before the sun comes up.

WIDE GROUNDS

Out towards the fairway plenty of mac and longtail tuna can be found along with trevally and queenfish around the beacon. Soft plastics worked around the bait schools have been getting plenty of attention as well as surface poppers. Out wider the southern gutters were a little hit and miss over the Easter break with parrot, grass sweetlip, hussar and coral trout being the main catches. Over towards Rooneys and the coral patch a few early snapper have been reported, along with nanygai and a few grass sweetlip, but the sharks particularly in the coral patch area have been horrendous.

PLATYPUS BAY

their run, along with big golden trevally and a few broad bar and spanish mackerel. Sharks are still a problem and targeting the smaller schools of tuna. Heading away from the main action will improve your chances of landing a few fish.

On the deeper reefs around the bay, schools of queenfish have started to move in along with big golden trevally. Targeting areas holding good amounts of bait will be the best way to find these great sport fish. Using 5 inch jerkshads worked through the bait schools is a deadly technique along with blades and soft vibes like thready busters.

LOCAL REEFS

On the Arty some squire size snapper often start to move in during April. Fishing around the wrecks with soft plastics is a popular technique along with good old reliable live bait. When fishing for snapper, fish as light as possible with lightly weighted lures and baits will see great results.

SANDY STRAITS

In the Mary and Susan River systems a few smaller Barra and Threadfin continue to be caught around the lower reaches, working the rock bars and drains has been a successful technique with the ever reliable gold bomber nailing a few fish. Flathead and grunter have been good targets for the bait fishos, the grunter have been responding well to live prawns with a few flathead coming in as a welcome bycatch. Along the western side of the Island the creeks will still produce some mangrove Jacks and can also hold some good grunter.

STRENGTHENING THE SOUL A

ctive, one word that has the ability to define the course of your life, and the strength and ease in which you will sail through, yet the outcome has nothing to do with how many pushups you can do, or how far you can run, no my friends, staying active builds strength in all areas of your life.

Now don’t get me wrong, staying strong, and caring for the vessel in which our soul resides is of utmost importance- for how are we to navigate through life if we are not doing everything we can to cherish and nurture all that we are in our physical form, yet there are so many other ways in which we must actively build strength each day.

Our conscious evolution sits at the top of the list, for we are here for only one reason- to grow and evolve. It is up to us each and every day, to do all that we can to keep a grasp on our emotions and move past the conditioning that has shaped us, moving through each day with a focus on kindness, love and compassion. Always easier said than done, our number one life lesson to learn; being love.

We have not been put here to experience life on our own, so it is important to remember that we are more than just ourselves. We are the family, friends and the community that surround us. Strong communities thrive, and being active in helping and supporting one another each and every day creates a ripple effect that flows out to the world. We all have our personal struggles, but kindness goes a long way to ease the pain.

Whilst we will never know for sure exactly WHY we

are here, having this human experience, we must dig deep and search for the answers whilst finding peace in the unknown, this is how we grow. If we were meant to know, we would have been given a manual upon entry, however the excitement in living comes from the search for answers, as we grow we understand more. Keep searching and hold on tight to what resonates for you, for that is an answer enough.

Blind faith will lead you nowhere. Question everything; it is time for us all to stop blindly walking through life, believing what we are taught as the only truth. There may be comfort in what is familiar, but the world is such an exciting and interesting place when we realise that there are more questions than answers in our every day. Actively do your own research; you may just surprise yourself with what you may find, and how much wider your world will open up when you do.

And so my friends, the greatest revolutionary act we can do is to break free from the shackles and do all that we can to move through life with strength and determination to grow as strong as we possibly can. As our modern world continues to stifle, distract and disconnect us, now more than ever it is time for us to come back to whom we are, and reconnect with the deepest parts of ourselves- we hold so much more power than we are told.

Enjoy the simplicity of the everyday, and actively move through each day with an intention to grow and evolve into the best human you can be no matter how hard that may feel at the time. You got this!

Let’s take this month’s theme of “active”, and add a slight twist. Introducing the word “proactive”. Being proactive is the ultimate in self empowerment! To be proactive is to embrace the driver’s seat of your life, steering it with purpose rather than simply reacting to external circumstances. Dare to take charge, to anticipate, to actively seek out opportunities for growth, and to shape your own narrative, because, in the realm of proactive living, the possibilities are boundless!

For some reason I want to say this month, smile, and the whole world smiles with you! April has the potential to be a great month. If you are a creative, there are no bounds to what you can achieve, so get those creative juices flowing. If you have been experiencing a downer of late, this is your reminder to find the fun and positivity in life.

Aquarius Jan 20 - Feb 18

Aquarius, you are such a generous soul, and I feel you are being paid back for this generosity. Also, know that, all the efforts you have been putting into something will now reap rewards. So, enjoy this new found positive energy and abundance. You are indeed worthy!

Pisces Feb 19 - Mar 20

Change is in the air for you , Pisces, and this could be an opportunity for you to shine. I feel you have kept your beautiful soul under wraps, and it is now time to believe in you. Time to grab that steering wheel and zoom forward in your life! You’ve got what it takes. Good luck!

Have you been feeling trapped of late Aries? Perhaps you have not had the confidence to break free of others’ opinions. Again, the word proactive is relevant for you. What do you want to do, to set your heart free?? Perhaps you need to surrender old hurts, and then work on discovering you, and your truth? Go on, you’ve got this!

I’m feeling you have had some conflict recently Taurus, and your cup is full, leaving you feeling exhausted. This month, please just cruise along. There is no need to take on any new battles, or get involved in an old one.. My advice for you is time out! Allow this time to recharge your body battery, and find some peace.

Gemini May 21 - June 20

Ok Gemini, it is time to start finishing up those things you have started, and tie up those loose ends. Before the new chapter begins for you, the last one has to be tied up. Say goodbye, to things that no longer serve you, and those unfinished projects. Only then, will you feel accomplishment, and be able to start anew. How exciting!

Cancer June 21- July 22

This month is not ideal for sitting on the sidelines about something. It is time for you to stand up for what you believe in and be heard. Sometimes this may feel almost impossible to do, but I know, you do have the strength to believe in you. Don’t stand back and wait, You’ve got this!

Leo, I talked about being proactive in my blurb. That little message is totally for you. Yes, embrace the steering wheel in your life and drive, because you have so much potential to shine! All it takes is for you to muster up some courage and throw caution to the wind. In other words, just do it!

Virgo Aug 23 - Sept 22

I feel you may have been burdened with some stress of late. Hanging on to stress contributes to overwhelm and burnout, and this doesn’t help anyone. As much as we want to control outcomes, often this is out of your control. This month is a great time to release and hand over that stress to the divine/universe. You will feel so much lighter.

Libra Sept - 23 - Oct 23

Personal growth is highlighted this month. If you have been through some life lessons of late, pat yourself on the back, well done. Through every life experience there is personal learning, and through this learning wisdom is gained. Embrace the positive and believe you are always heading in the right direction.

Scorpio Oct 24 - Nov 21

Have you been a bit hard on yourself lately, Scorpio? We are often our own worst critics. Instead of being a critic, change up your perspective and be your own cheerleader. This may seem overwhelming to do, but treat and talk to yourself like a small child. Speak gently and kindly, nurture and love yourself. It is about time!
