WELCOME TO COUNTRY Tangalooma - Brisbane Queensland - Where The Fish Gather Located on the eastern shoreline of Moreton Island, the Tangalooma Resort is a significant environmental and urban landmark of the Brisbane coastal area. The site was established as a whaling station in 1952 until the practice in 1963. The site was later renovated as a marine education and conservation centre promoting environmental awareness. ALL THE ELEMENTS: Tangalooma as an environment is characterised by interactions between different forces and elements: Urban, geographic and organic. Its position on the coastline influences the organic development of the native flora as much as the presence of artificial construction. Similarly the growth vegetation ultimately dictates the countrous in the environment over a period of time.

Although clearly definied, the distict elements of Tangalooma each interact with each other to form the diverse, dynamic environment the site has become so famous for.

The organic elements of Tangalooma consist of swamps; heathlands; and open woodlands dominated by Scribbly Gum and Pink Bloodwood trees. Salt-resistant ground-cover plants play an important role in protecting the sand dunes by trapping and binding the sand, which allows other plant species to thrive.

PROCESS OF DEVELOPMENT Step 1: Download LiDAR data from ELVIS Geoscience for the location.

Step 2: Merge Multiple LAS files in CloudCompare. Trim the specific area.

Step 3: Extract seperate data sets based on each classification. Assign a layer for each

Step 5: Merge each data set together to form the combined model.

URBAN:

LANDMASS:

The urban elements of Tangalooma are primarilly concentrated around the resort area. Outside of residential accomodation, the prescence of artificial structure is relatively minor with access to the facility being primarilly achieved via ferry rather than road.

The physical landscape of Tangalooma is composed entirely from dunes formed by natural process of erosion, accretion and stabilisation by vegetation. The only rock on Moreton island is located kilometres north at the headlands of cape Moreton.

The location and concentration of urban developments at Tangalooma are heavily influenced by the contours and composition of the landscape. As demonstrated on the adjacent diagrams, the majority of urban development’s appear to concentrate around the medium altitude upon areas of consistent level.

This is an understandable correlation, as these areas are the ones most likely to provide the ideal conditions for constructing buildings. As the soil towards the lower altitudes of the region is less stable due to its high sand concentration, any structural developments would have to take place in areas that can provide a more stable foundation.

The organic vegetation of Tangalooma forms an interesting relationship with the contours of the landscape. Due to its proximity to the ocean, the soil composition of the region consists mostly of sand, meaning that concentrations of soil are likely to shit over time. However, the region has also cultivated a significant population of flora which cover the landscape. The roots of these plants are ingrained deeply into the landscape and are preventing the erosion of the soil allowing the landscape to maintain its natural contours.

In the adjacent graphs we can see how the concentration of vegetation correlates with the altitude of landscape. However unlike in the previous example where the contours of the landscape were dictating the location and concentration of urban developments, in this scenario the roles are reversed: the concentration of vegetation is dictating the contours of the landscape.

PROCESS: Step 1: Run Cloth Simulation Filter on original modelto generatre mesh.

Step 2: Extract all ground level data from the original model. Rasterise the extracted data set.

Step 3: Using the resulting ground mesh, compute the distance between the mesh and the data above ground level.

Step 4: change the colour pallete of the original mesh to viridis (or whichever is prefered.

Step 5: Change the scalar field of the extracted data set to “C2M assigned distances” Change its colour pallet to ‘Blue Green Yellow Red’.

ORGANIC LIFE: URBAN/ENVIRONMENT: Despite being relatively minor, the presence of urban elements at Tangalooma has had a noticeable effect on the growth of vegetation. As demonstrated by the adjacent graph, the density and height of the local vegetation is inversely paralleled with the location of buildings.

In contrast, the aquatic environment of Tangalooma has been greatly enhanced by the prescence of artifical structure, with the establishment of an artifical reef greatly increasing marine biodiversity in the area.

The Tangalooma coastline boast an aquatic environment rich in biodiversity courtesy of the adjacent artificial reef established in 1980.

As an extension of Moreton Island, Tangalooma shares a fragile ecology with vegetation communities including swamps, heathlands and woodlands.

Tangalooma is home to various species of both terrestial and aqautic wildlife, including 14 species of mammals, 11 species of amphibians and 16 types of reptiles.
