The Living Playground Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada The concept of the housing proposal is to challenge the notion of what is a unit, what are the private programs in the unit, and the public portion in the sharing space. Through the concept of an open floor plate as a notion of the and outdoor living room and the public space, the housing design intends to maximize the common space to create congregation and interaction between residents that are living in the units and increase the flexibility and usage of the storages area. At the same time, it preserves the private room to the residences themselves.

The Understory Location: East Harlam, NY, USA Team: Pearl Cao & Alison Huo The Understory follows the philosophy of being inclusive, accessible and able to facilitate conversations about social and environmental issues, a platform for the residence of East Harlem to raise their voices. When we look at where impactful and physical manifestos usually happen, it’s generally in civic public spaces, with large open ground such as plaza and street. When starting our design, we think that it needs to be the first and foremost a public space that can facilitate visible forms of collective action. Following some studies of existing public spaces, we have observed that parks promote environmentally friendly public space and provide an open ground space for congregations to collect and express voices for social, political, and ecological issues. Moreover, while looking into the parks around the site, we notice they are all tiny, mostly paved, fenced, and programmed for specific usage. Hence we’re proposing an urban park that is highly accessible 24/7, un-programmed, and welcomes any forms of social events and activism. At the same time, the park will also tackle other issues such as locally reducing the urban heat island effect and providing a more diverse and welcoming landscape for the residence of East Harlem.

Boundless Spectacle of Taste Siteless Spectacle Boundless Spectacle of Taste is an architectural capriccio that speculates on spaces of aesthetic judgement. It questions historical notions of judgement through the creation of a fantastical place that challenges the priority of definite conclusions. Since the eighteenth century, the concept of Aesthetics has been a subject of ambiguity. Whether it is “the immediacy of straightforwardly sensory judgements” or a collective of describable objective reasonings, the definition has never been settled. Historically, a place of judgement such as a courthouse implies a process of decision-making through the idea of reasoning, judging, and evaluating. The systems are based on certain moral, cultural, political, or religious principles, such as law and ethics. The architectural characteristic of this place of judgement implies a strong sense of authority and enforcement, in which judgements are definitive. On the other hand, the concept of Aesthetics embodies dualistic qualities of Ambiguity and ambivalence, subject to a multiplicity of interpretations. Boundless Spectacle of Taste positions itself as a satire, prompted by a desire to question the tyranny of aesthetic judgement in the contemporary imaginary. This thesis is not seeking universal approval, nor does it insist upon a singular concept of judgement itself. In an embrace of architectural fiasco, it confronts norms, biases, and assumptions embedded within the design of spaces that have traditionally structured judgement and debate and tables them for further consideration.

Scarboroughton Location: Scarborough, Ontario, Canada Team: Neha Bhargava, Alison Huo & Alex Tang What should the centre of a city look like? What is good city planning? And How should a city be built to carry its own history and reflect its identity? Scarborough’s two most iconic buildings, Scarborough Town Centre (Mall) and Scarborough Civic Centre (City Hall), are located in the heart of Scarborough and have a history of industrial employment development east and west of the city centre. After the municipal amalgamation of Toronto in 1998, development in Scarborough had slowed down due to the dispersal of municipal funding. Today, the city suffers from a lack of public safety, good air quality, and falls into the lower income area. With an intention to respect and preserve the industrial heritage east and west of the city centre, we propose to transform this 1 km by 5 km, low rise, low density and single program buildings city centre land to an urban fabric of mid- to high-rise, higher density, and mixed-use building typology with a Central Business District at the heart of Scarborough. At the same time, we seek to introduce a 5 km long urban park to create an east-west corridor that links the adjacent neighbourhoods around the city centre.

Market Place Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada The project experimented with interactions and performances between geometries in three-dimensional space. The site is located in Mimico, Ontario, situated between condos and townhouses. It serves as a market place provides indoor amenities for the locals and visitors from the adjacent neighbourhoods.

Inverse Void Non-Architecture Competition 2019 Honourable Mention Team: Ben Chang, Alison Huo, Shengjie Qiu The Inverse Void is a landscape cemetery that portrays the multiplicity of the buried dead, and the unitive nature of death itself. Beyond the conventional means of a resting ground for the dead, the Inverse Void is a cemetery for the living. Take a traditional cemetery and flip it upside-down. The result is a burial ground above and a space of ontological contemplation below. The visitors would embark on an existential journey through a ramp that descends gradually throughout the circumference of the cemetery. The Inverse Void brings the living below ground to experience the emptiness and solitude of the Void. The expansive space below is softly lit up through the array of skylights, each marking the death of an individual. The burial ground is an inverted island floating above the Void. The relationship between the living and the dead are reversed, as to reposition one’s point of view towards life and death. What bridges the two polarizing concepts is an ascending staircase from the land of the living to the dead, giving positive attributes to the nature of life and its inevitable cessation. It is a humble reminder of the Heideggerian idea of our constant being-towards-death.

Philosophy of Self Fairy Tale Competition 2018 Location: Siteless Spectacular Chapter I - The Unknown Self Time is the thief. I have known this for a long time. I have always thought that my physical body is rotting and decaying. My own spirit carries the memory and travels through time in the universe. Perhaps the time that I am experiencing right now has been encapsulated from the past. It is simply replayed again and again in different scenes and locations. Who am I? A question for which I have no answer, yet a question that repeats. My curiosity longs for the answer. I can no longer live in the midst of all this without knowing anything about myself. After a prolonged contemplation, I decided to go on a journey to find out the nature of who I am.

Chapter II - Let’s Unify Everything I walked through woods and crossed rivers. I arrived in a town. After a much-needed sleep, I opened my eyes. A lumpy white ceiling engulfed the entire periphery of my vision. The noise from the streets pulled me towards the window. There was an air balloon crossing the sky, and something seemed to be falling down. I decided to walk out. Flyers are dancing all over the sky. I grabbed the one that fell in front of me. An ordinary building was highlighted on the flying; it immediately caught my eye. A new building project is commencing, and they are looking for workers. For some reason that I cannot explain, I decided to join the workforce. I arrived at the construction site the following day. I noticed that all the finished structures are identical. They are all rectangular in shape with a flat roof. The ground floors are public spaces, and the private units are on top. Everything is the same with no exception. Nothing is extraordinary, yet the atmosphere is cold and rigid. It feels like me, an ordinary person. I walk into the office and ask for a job. After an interview, they decided to let me start working right away and have a new name called K12-3710. I start working at the site days and nights. We follow the same schedule every day. Works will begin in the early morning, finish in the afternoon, watch TV at the night time at home, and get up again at the same time the following day. Everything is standard; nothing can get me excited, not even the completion of the construction. I started questioning whether is this who I am? Is this who I am looking for, to follow what others have told me without hesitation or a second thought. I feel like I am becoming one of those buildings with a feeling of death and silence, so I decided to leave this place for good.

Chapter III - Walking on The Edge of Periphery I am back on my journey. After passing through a few small villages, a series of circular arches middle of the woods drew me towards them. As I approached the arches, a voice echoed in the air, “welcome traveller, you are about to enter the dream world. We welcome you to be a dreamer of dreams, a realm in which our subconscious emerges into forms. Be warned, do not lose yourself in the imaginaries.” I would like to dream. After explaining to the staff in the dream world, they lead me to a room with a helmet and bed. “Please come over, put on the helmet and lay down here, then you can start dreaming” I put on the helmet and lay down. Just right after making myself comfortable, I hear, “Three, two ...” Suddenly my body got pulled down, and I was suddenly in free fall. I noticed that I was surrounded by cloud-like space. It feels so innocent and so pure. It should be decorated. My emotions and thoughts are leaking out of my body. They solidified into tangible pathways and steps. As more and more of my subconscious thinking came out of my mind, strange and massive structures were created. They look so sculptural, but they also feel light as a feather. I wonder whether they actually carry any weights of thoughts. Probably it should be tremendous and monumental. I keep diving into my dream for a million miles deep. My body gets more robust along with this realization. I never felt so energetic; I can see things with perfect vision, my muscles are built up strongly. Everything is powering up. I feel invincible, and this is incredible. “Warning, warning. Power overflows. Warning, warning. Initiating emergency shutdown.” Unfortunately, I became so addicted to my dream that I completely ignored the warning. The dream starts collapsing, and the darkness is rapidly corroding the space. It was out of control. The last scene I could remember was I fell down from the higher up.

Chapter IV - Wandering in The Abyss I awoke on a pathway, more accurately a pathway that consists of lines. I sat up slowly and observed this space. It is beyond what I have known from the normal world. Pathways are extended along the wall and floor; the staircase leads you to the ceiling. Does this space actually make sense? I guess gravity does not apply in this dimension because I am upside down now. I keep exploring those transitional spaces; it has already been a decade. I wonder, does an object only have one single purpose? Is a wall just a partition? Is a ceiling just a rooftop for shelter? Are floors only for stepping on? There isn’t a distinct definition in this dimension; everything is ambiguous. I start to reflect, then what is the purpose of this journey, and what am I actually looking for? A name, a title or a right choice. What am I expecting for the answer? I am worthless, this journey is meaningless, or I am always living in the uncertainty of time. Those questions keep amplifying in my mind. Just another typical day, I was exploring these endless transitions one by one. While checking No. 212, I was gravitated and swollen by the entry.

Chapter V - Back to The Origin I am floating. There are fragments of memories and time are surrounded me. I see a light source in the distance. Everything started from there. Like the primordial sound of the universe, the singular point sparked with the all-encompassing potential of totality. The form is ambiguous, and its implication is uncertain. It attracts me to reach forward. I think I know who I am now. I am nothing. And for being nothing, I am everything.

Boxer Architects Professional Role: Architectural Designer June 2017 - Aug 2019 For the entire two-year professional experience at Boxer Architects, I get to circulate between projects that are at the stages from Schematic Design to Design Development, and to Construction Document. When I first joined the studio back in 2017, it was a small, five-people, newly started studio. It focused on many customized housing design projects in the early year as well as physical model studies during the design process, which enhanced my understanding of practicing architecture. I had worked on a variety of new-built residential projects or houses that required to have an expansion. From those experiences, I studied spaces for new projects, coordinated drawings with structural and mechanical engineers, listened to client meetings and prepared drawing for the City and commencement of construction. I had learned and developed design through the physical model, drawings and renderings based on studies and design intention.
