INTRODUCTION The “No Man’s Land” competition seeks a design for a refugee respite centre at the Eagle Pass-Piedras Negras International Bridge. The respite centre must accommodate a minimum of 1,500 individuals, with an average stay of one to two months.

This centre features three key areas which are: community, services, and accommodation.

“Home Away From Home” is a respite centre that aims to draw attention to itself. The bridge has been redesigned to go around the building. This is done with the intention that those who pass the respite centre will be curious about its purpose, and learn more about the political issue surrounding the large number of Hispanic people seeking refuge in the United States.

With more awareness and education, comes an opportunity for the issues in their home countries to be addressed for future generations.

An element which is valued in Latin culture, the respite centre will be focused on community spaces and encouraging relationship building between residents.

In line with the concept behind the centre, the form is based on a central focal point.

Due to the centre’s location, view points from all angles will be optimised.

Building a respite centre of this size is not common; it is important to give refugees a sense of being human.

Suites must be adaptable to different family or group sizes.

- Cars and pedestrians who pass the structure will be intrigued, look up the purpose of the building online,and be encouraged to find out more about these issues - Bring attention to the underlying issue of why large numbers of Hispanic people seek asylum in the United States so that the issues in their home countries may be addressed

The form resembles a curving snake and Aalto used its many curves to optimize the accommodation spaces.

From the beginning, he saught to maximize the view of the river for every student - making an array of unique suites. It is said that one could live in these dorms during their 3-4 years of university and have a new experience each time they switched rooms.

This project was chosen for Aalto’s use of space to create functional living spaces in small areas, as well as his concept of providing each student with a view of the river; these are qualities that I seek to replicate.
