We just might surprise you!

Ella Ellis Holway played a significant role in the preservation of Sandwich. Born in 1861 to Wanton Ellery Ellis and Sarah Priscilla Story, she married Jerome Holway a direct descendant of one of Sandwich’s earliest settlers, Joseph Holway on September 30, 1886.

Having trained at Lasell University, class of 1881, Ella was a local schoolteacher and mother of four children. In her free time Ella researched and wrote extensively about historic homes in Sandwich. In 1907 she founded the Sandwich Historical Society, the holding company for the Sandwich Glass Museum today.

Perhaps her greatest gift to Sandwich was the charting and recording of all the burial stones in the Old Town Burial Ground. Ella died at the age of 56 in 1915.

Most newcomers to Sandwich think that we probably were always a farming community and not much of a business center. Well, that is not true. Upper Shawme Pond, often called Shawme Lake, was the site of various businesses.

Before the Industrial Revolution, to manufacture anything, you had to have a source of power from a natural source like water. On the upper mill dam of Shawme Lake, Samuel Wing had a cotton and wool yarn factory. This eventually became the Sandwich Tack factory owned by Jones and Heald. Closer to the village, the Bay State Tack Company created a plant at Willow Street in 1880. When the original Tack factory of Heald and Jones burned, they took over the Willow Street factory.

99 SO hu or pH pi si tn ogr y The Boston and Sandwich Boot and Shoe Company occupied a site opposite Town Hall in 1881 with twenty workers making fifty pairs of shoes a day! Then the Armstrong Braiding Company eventually filled the spot held by the shoe company.

Things kept enlarging. The upper mill dam Sam Wing cotton and wool yarn factory was succeeded by the Wing and Rogers tack factory. It seems that key figures just kept exchanging factory sites and ownership.

Fish and cranberries remained as vital businesses in Sandwich and elsewhere on Cape Cod. Many of the previously mentioned characters not only owned and ran factories but also took part in the native cranberry industry. Isaiah Tobey Jones, who owned a Tack company, was heavily involved with the Cape Cod Cranberry Growers Association founded in 1888.

So, it was not only the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company and Deming Jarves who ran a successful business in Sandwich. However, by March 1905, the fires went out for the last time at the site of the Boston and Sandwich Glass Works. All gallant efforts to save it had failed and all workers and families had to move on and leave Sandwich.

129 Main Street • Sandwich Village 508-888-0251 Sandwichglassmuseum.org The Sandwich Glass Museum and Historical Society interprets the history of the town of Sandwich, as well as the role it played in ushering in the Industrial Revolution to the once agricultural and fishing village of Sandwich. Sparked by the building of the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company in 1825, the company grew to be one of the largest glass manufacturers in the world. It left an indelible mark on the face of Sandwich, which remains today as glass studios dot Cape Cod, including some in Sandwich, and beyond.

Featuring over 10,000 pieces of Sandwich glass, daily glassblowing demonstrations, a multi-media theater experience, interactive displays and changing exhibitions, no family trip to Sandwich would be complete without a visit.

Located in the heart of Sandwich’s Glass Town Cultural District this fascinating museum features a stunning Museum Store offering exquisite locally made contemporary blown glass, reproductions, jewelry and more. 2022 Exhibit Highlights Heritage Museums & Gardens opens its season with Creating Cape Cod (April 23 - October 16). This exhibit explores how Cape Cod moved from the “Yankee backwater” that Henry David Thoreau described in 1855 to a destination that more than 5 million people visit each year. This story is revealed in Creating Cape Cod. Car enthusiasts will enjoy the exhibit From Carriage to Classic: How Automobiles Transformed America (April 23 – October 16), where we present the origin story of the American automobile through cars from Heritage’s permanent collection. On display for 2022 are twenty-one automobiles – including the recently acquired 1965 Ford Country Squire station wagon. This exhibit answers questions such as, “What were early automobiles like? How did the car emerge as a transformative cultural force of the twentieth century? Why did gasoline become the fuel of choice? What ever happened to steam engines? How did the car change the daily lives of ordinary families?” Come along for a ride from the late 1800s to the early 1960s and watch the car evolve from a horseless carriage to a streamlined symbol of freedom and independence!

This season, Heritage will also feature another outdoor installation: a full-scale reproduction of a wetu, a traditional dwelling used by the Wampanoag tribe through the late 1600s. The wetu was made by members of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, following centuries-old construction methods. Visitors will be invited to explore the wetu and to learn historical and contemporary information about the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe from interpretive signage.

Our summer 2022 special exhibit, “The Road to Revolution on Cape Cod” will be on display in the Welcome Center from June through October. Most guests can expect to spend about an hour exploring the property, but you are welcome to stay as long as you like. The Nye Museum is a non-profit organization.

This year’s outdoor art exhibit is Treasured Trash (April 23 - October 16). Placed throughout the gardens and grounds, this exhibition brings together five artists from the Northeast region of the United States who all create work from recycled and repurposed materials. Made from salvaged fishing gear, cardboard, plastic bags and bottles, beach trash and more, these large-scale outdoor sculptures and installations shine a light on the challenges of waste management and pollution—two major issues facing our coastal communities.

As one of the region’s most innovative art museums, the Cahoon Museum of American Art is a fun and inspiring place to visit.

The Museum presents contemporary art exhibitions in a spacious modern gallery, as well as in the historic 1782 Crocker homestead which serves as its home. Visitors of all ages are welcome to learn about art and art history, to enjoy family-friendly events and participate in creative programming. The 2022 season presents the exhibits, Action/Abstraction Redefined, a look at contemporary Native Art and Scrimshaw: The Whaler’s Art, presenting the story of scrimshaw, the nautical art form created by whalemen during the international whaling trade of the 19th century.

The museum has an extensive gift shop and offers docent tours. Programs include artist receptions, the Art Cart, open houses, special events for children and families, lectures, demonstrations, and art classes. Information on all the Museum’s activities is available at cahoonmuseum.org.

Dexter Grist Mill On Shawme Pond, Water Street (Rte 130) Sandwich Village 508-888-4361 The Dexter Grist Mill is one of the most photographed sites on Cape Cod. The mill overlooks Lower Shawme Pond and is bordered by the Town Hall, herring run, picturesque colonial homes, and a cemetery with gravestones dated back to the 1600s.

All the mill’s machinery is the earliest type used in this country and is driven by water power from the Shawme Pond. Freshly ground cornmeal packaged in old-fashioned cloth flour bags can be purchased and includes the mill’s popular recipes.

The Hoxie House 18 Water Street, Sandwich Village 508-888-4361 Take a trip back in time. The Hoxie House (circa 1640) reflects life in the town of Sandwich in the 17th-century. High on a bluff overlooking beautiful Shawme Pond in its original location rests the Hoxie House. The famous house was acquired by the town of Sandwich and in 1959 was fully and authentically restored.

A brief, narrated, hands-on tour gives visitors a chance to experience the fun and hardships of life in the 17th-century. Visitors learn unique facts about settlers’ life experiences, including many which have found their way into modern times. Many present-day sayings, including “daylight robbery,” “sleep tight,” “Tying the knot,” and “the upper crust,” have their origins in 17th-century life.

Motor coach tours are welcome by appointment. Narrated tours are available to meet your time scheduled. Parking is provided.

Wing Fort House 69 Spring Hill Rd, East Sandwich (off Rte 6A ) • 508-833-1540 wingfamily.org Originally built in 1641, Wing Fort House is the oldest house in New England owned and occupied continuously by one family. Stephen Wing, one of the earliest settlers of Sandwich and son of the Reverend John Wing and Deborah Bachiler, was the first to live here. Wing descendents made it their home for over three centuries. Now restored, it is furnished almost entirely with Wing family antiques honoring different periods of its long history. It was the private residence of Cora Wing until 1942.

The House is now a museum and shared with visitors by a dedicated caretaker-guide and volunteer members of the Wing Family of America. Receiving no funds from state or federal governments, the House is maintained solely by membership dues, visitor fees and donations.

Where Art, Culture & History Meet!

The Glass Town Cultural District had a very busy year that saw the fullfillment of the long-term goal of presenting Public Art in Sandwich.

A Call to Artists went out last spring and our own Michael Maygar’s work entitled “Glass House: Past and Future” was chosen with the help of a design review panel. Grants from Massachusetts Cultural Council, Sandwich Cultural Council, The Fund for Sandwich, The Visitors Service Board and help from Sandwich Community Television and of course, the Town of Sandwich made this possible.

On September 23, 2021 “Glass House” was unveiled at an event at the Dunbar House Tea Room & Wine Bar. The seven foot tall obelisk pays homage to the history of Sandwich by incorporating glass factory remnants on two sides and looks to the future by displaying contemporary glass sourced from around the globe on the remaining sides. During the day the colorful, dynamic glass catches the light and it is lit by solar power at night.

The “Glass House” is home– on the grassy area next to the Grist Mill.

In celebration of Sandwich’s public art, the Committee commissioned Mr. Magyar to create a small decorative obelisk. Each handmade by the artist, these are a numbered limited run. Introduced at the Shop Sandwich First Holiday market run by the Sandwich Chamber, the obelisks sold out its initial 50 of a 200 run.

These are available for purchase at the Glass Studio of Cape Cod, as well as, the Sandwich Chamber of Commerce.

Our committee was so honored to present Public Art to the town of Sandwich. “Glass House: Past and Future” is of Sandwich, by Sandwich and for Sandwich! Future projects include some educational offerings related to Glass House as well as future Public Art for our Town!

A 2.8-mile loop -- marked by signs and sharrows -takes cyclists from the Cape Cod Canal into historic Sandwich village. Start at the eastern end of the canal path next to Sandwich Marina and ride down Freezer Road and make a right onto Tupper Road.

Take care while making a left turn at the stoplight onto Route 6A, and take a right at the next light onto Jarves Street toward the heart of the village (or take a left for a detour to the town’s iconic Boardwalk). While on the way to -- or while within -the village cyclists may stop at any of a number of eateries for refreshment.

From Jarves Street the signed route continues right onto Main Street. While the route leaves Main Street at picturesque River Street, first take a slight detour to the end of Main Street, where riders will find a park with bike racks, seasonally available restrooms, and benches across from destinations such as Sandwich Town Hall, the grist mill and an artesian well -- reachable via a crosswalk -- where riders can fill their water bottles.

Those wishing to return to the canal can backtrack up Main Street to River Street and reconnect with Tupper Road via the signed route for the return trip.

Bike racks have been placed at key locations around Sandwich: At beaches, public buildings, parks and the Sandwich Welcome Center on Route 130.

More bike racks are being added around town annually.

For mountain bikers, Shawme-Crowell State Forest has an extensive trail network well worth exploring. Several new trails have been added recently within Maple Swamp Conservation Area on Service Road – including a panoramic lookout platform atop Nye Mountain that affords visitors a view of Cape Cod Bay. BMX riders will also want to visit the new Cape Cod BMX track off Quaker Meetinghouse Road between Cotuit Road and Route 130.

Sandwich’s Bikeway & Pedestrian Committee is focused on accomplishing a designated route to connect the village with a planned off-road path along Service Road, which eventually will connect to the Cape Cod Rail Trail to the east. The committee in 2018 completed a town-wide master plan for biking and walking improvements, and is working toward safer on- and off-road connections between the town’s commercial centers, recreational areas, neighborhoods and schools. 51 51 ip ss SA i ttiiiinnee gg SA hchc ttooii ppvv p Visiting Sandwich as a fisherman or one who likes to go home with a “one that got away” story then you’re in the right place. Sandwich has great fishing opportunities for a salt or freshwater angler. I’ll spare you the agony of reading my “one that got away” story and point you in the right direction to write your own. Best saltwater spot is The Cape Cod Canal which offers shoreline fishing for several miles with walking access along its seven-mile run and there is plenty of parking available as well. The canal is home to a wide variety of fish like Striped Bass, Sea Bass, Mackerel, Tautog and sometimes Pollock. The Bulkhead of the Sandwich Marina is probably the greatest spot for targeting these multiple species. If you would rather surf cast, then Town beach or our East Sandwich beaches are the place to go. There you will find Flounder, Fluke, Sea Bass and perhaps a nice big Striped Bass for your fish story.

If you are a fly fisherman and hitting a 20 lb Striped Bass is on your bucket list, than many of our salt marsh estuaries are waiting for you.

These areas are at the towns historic Boardwalk and Scorton Creek.

For the freshwater angler Peters Pond is stocked heavily in the spring with Trout making it a great location. In the surrounding areas of town there are many ponds, Shaume, Mashpee Wakeby, Lawrence, and Spectacle to name a few are where you’ll will find a variety of Large and Small Mouth Bass, Perch, and Pickerel.

All of these locations have boat launch areas and plenty of shoreline access. Best of luck writing your “one that got away” story or perhaps you’ll have pictures and bragging rights to bring home.
