rich Bergen is talented. He can act. He can sing. He can dance. And we’re almost certain he can conduct. We’ll see him do all of these on stage today at the 34th Annual Pops by the Sea. Erich has an impressive resume. What struck us the most about him is not his list of IMDB credits, but something less eye-catching. In recent years, Erich has parlayed his fame and success into trips to our nation’s capital to advocate for more music and arts education in our public schools. Admittedly, Erich was not the best student, but not because he lacked intelligence or drive. “Because I knew exactly what I wanted to do in my life,” he told us. While some children may be like Erich and have their careers and lives mapped out at a young age, most do not. Exposure to the arts doesn’t always offer that kind of clarification, but what it does do is something far more important. On a practical level, it allows children to develop creative problem-solving skills; provides differentiated instruction for children to learn artistically; and helps children improve their motor skills and their ability to communicate and make decisions. Through the arts, children connect with others and are able to better understand themselves and the world around them. Since last fall, the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod (AFCC) has been focusing on ways we can enable all children, regardless of socioeconomic background, to experience the power, wonder, and beauty of the arts. Through AFCC Access, we’ve been able to connect 23 local children to creative outlets at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, the Cape Cod Theatre Company, and more. These are children facing a variety of obstacles hindering their ability to access artistic opportunities. One’s family was on the brink of homelessness, another was being raised by her grandparents, and a third had recently moved here from another country. Your presence at this year’s Pops supports children like these. And it will allow us to expand our efforts to help even more students this coming school year. While we applaud Erich for his advocacy efforts, we also applaud you. What happens on stage may attract the most attention, but it’s the behind-the-scenes efforts that matter the most. Honorary Chair Michael Lauf PRELUDE TO SUMMER
“ HOW CAN WE SIT AND GATHER as a society to help these kids find creative outlets that will allow them to develop more emotionally, intellectually? Allow them to be better people?” Cape Cod Healthcare CEO Michael Lauf asked the nearly 200 people attending this year’s Prelude to Summer. “That’s what our future should be about.” The AFCC recognized Lauf as this year’s honorary chair for the annual event thanks to his support of AFCC Access, a program launched last September which connects economically disadvantaged children to artistic and cultural opportunities in the region. Cape Cod Healthcare has committed to supporting the first two years of the program. “If just one [person] can look back in 20 years and thank this program, then we’ve done our job,” Lauf said. Cindy Horgan, executive director of Cape Cod Children’s Place, a community partner which identifies local children that would be a good fit for AFCC Access, spoke about the importance of expanding access to the arts. “We need to figure out how to make the arts a place for every child, whether it’s through their hand, their feet,

or their music,” she said. “That is what Access has done— it has taken away the barriers and made it so that we can start healing children who are really broken.”

few weeks ago, Erich Bergen started filming the final season of “Madam Secretary,” the CBS drama where he has spent the past six years playing Blake Moran, the executive assistant to Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord (Téa Leoni). When asked his thoughts on the popular show ending its run, he laughs, “My accountant will be upset,” before turning more serious. “It is so rare as an actor to get to be on a long-running show on a network. Those things just don’t happen anymore… As an actor, I’m the luckiest guy in the world to have been given the greatest job with the greatest group of people on a show that is beloved by people all over the country and all over the world.” Despite his affinity for the show, there is no sense of trepidation for what is next in his career. “I’m not in any way sad this is ending,” he says. “I’m looking forward to the future.” It’s a reaction that is justified; Erich has carved out a 25-year career in the entertainment industry. A New York City native, he was discovered in an after-school theater program at the age of nine. A year later, he started acting in off-Broadway productions and TV commercials, doing voiceover work, and modeling. “I’ve been kind of doing the same thing since I was 10 years old. It’s been all across the board—sometimes musical theater, sometimes television, and sometimes in a recording studio doing voiceover or animation,” he says. His talent would eventually land him on stage at the age of 20, playing Bob Gaudio of the Four Seasons in the national tour of the Tony-winning musical “Jersey Boys.” “It was the most exciting thing that ever happened in my life,” he says. “Nothing compares to getting that first call to do your real first starring role.”

Erich would reprise that role in the Clint Eastwood film version of the play, which was released in 2014. Last year, Erich made his Broadway debut in “Waitress,” and in June, he returned to the production to once again play the character of Dr. Pomatter. A multi-faceted entertainer, Erich has also achieved success as a singer, having released two singles and regularly performing cabaret-style shows throughout the United States. At this year’s Pops, Erich will put his talents to the test, when he pulls double duty—a first for the summer concert—serving as both the guest conductor and the guest performer. “You know, there’s nothing like performing with an orchestra. There’s nothing like that power and energy and force behind you. It’s something that is addictive,” he says. “The few times I’ve had the opportunity to perform with an orchestra, I jumped at the chance. Of course, the Boston Pops is the best of the best. To get that phone call was extremely exciting, and we get to do it on Cape Cod.”

Pops T-Shirt Designer Rediscovers Himself Through Art HE’S NOT MACGYVER, BUT TIM CONVERY CAN HOLD HIS OWN, especially when it comes to duct tape. It is that miracle material which has allowed the Truro-based Convery to reinvent himself professionally as an artist. “I feel very lucky being able to have this as a second career,” he says. “It is so much better than my first… It is almost like what I was meant to do is create this world for people.” He set off on this new path over a decade ago as an escape from New York City where he last worked as the creative director for a major cosmetics firm. He left that life for a more exciting, rewarding, and fulfilling one on Cape Cod. Here, Convery has rediscovered himself through art. And it all started with duct tape. “The tape is the genesis of it all,” he says proudly. Twenty years ago, he would use it to creatively wrap gifts for friends; it was an instant hit. It wasn’t until Convery moved to the Cape that he would find out just how popular the adhesive was. Based on the urging of a friend, he started using all sorts of tape colors to create letters, designs, logos, and images that formed the basis of his company Tim-Scapes, a retail store on Commercial Street in Provincetown. Selling everything from T-shirts to mugs to prints, the shop has allowed Convery to display his creativity using duct tape as a template for his digital-based art. “It is almost like blocks in a way,” he says, noting his pieces have a 60s- and 70s-era aesthetic with its “very clean, hard lines. I love the clarity of it, but my work is cryptic at the same time. You have to look at it to understand the typography, but then the image helps you do it… It is like these weird hieroglyphics that people love to decipher.” His latest design is featured on this year’s Pops by the Sea T-shirt. “I was thrilled when they asked me to do one for the Pops,” Convery says. “I love that I can make a difference with organizations like the AFCC by giving them these great graphics.” Convery’s story is a reminder for all artists that it’s never too late to pursue one’s passions. “I just felt, for me, the other thing about getting older is, ‘When am I going to do this, when I’m 80?’” he says. “If you don’t push yourself at all, you’re never going to get anywhere.”

FOOD NOURISHES. It brings people together. And it stimulates conversation. In many ways, food is not unlike art, making it the perfect fit for this year’s Winter Art exhibit at the Cotuit Center for the Arts. A total of 40 artists from around Cape Cod took this year’s theme – “Bon Appetit” – and cooked up delicious offerings of creativity that allowed visitors to think about their own relationships with one of life’s necessities: food.

hen it comes to economic challenges for students, there may be no school on Cape Cod that faces more of them than Hyannis West Elementary School. Over 10% of its student population is homeless, roughly 40% speak English as their second language, and 90% are eligible for free or reduced lunch. Even in the face of these hardships, there is one thing that is constant—each one of its students loves making art. “It’s a form of expression,” says Jessica Sassaman, the art educator curriculum coordinator for K-7 arts in Barnstable Public Schools. “Art is something that represents them and speaks to their individuality.” Thanks to a grant from the AFCC, the students will have a new way to express themselves this fall when the school welcomes a new kiln to replace one that was more than 60 years old and had stopped working. In her classes, Sassaman likes to connect students with contemporary artists, bringing them in to “show kids they can have this as a career path.” Because she does pottery, she will be able to showcase her own art for the children this coming school year. “I think it is going to be magical for the kids to bring in my own art,” she says. Hyannis West now joins Barnstable-West Barnstable and West Villages as the three elementary schools in the district with working kilns. Sassaman believes the tactile experience of working with their hands will give her students an even greater joy, freedom of expression, and confidence as they create everything from pots to vases to coffee mugs. “It’s important for me to connect something that is hands-on for them,” she says. “For some of the students, I think it will be therapeutic in a way.”

At Hyannis West, art serves a vital purpose, as it gives students “an outlet no matter what is going on in their lives. They’re able to sit still and express themselves at some point in the day and connect with others through art,” Sassaman says.

Arts Matter to Erich Bergen ERICH BERGEN IS PASSIONATE ABOUT THE ARTS, not just for himself, but for everyone. That’s why for the past two years he has made the trek to Washington, D.C. to convince lawmakers to increase federal funding for music education in public schools and to advocate for full funding for the Every Student Succeeds Act. “I am an advocate for it because I know it works for me,” Erich says. “The idea that when we have budget cuts, the first thing to go is the arts is completely backwards to me.” The arts, he stresses, are less about being a catalyst to make a living and more about creating a well-rounded person. “Arts education is not about how to become a musician professionally or learning how to become an actor professionally,” he says. “The evidence is there that proves kids who study music education do better overall in school.” He notes just how influential the arts can be in the formative years of a child. “As toddlers, you learn the alphabet from a song,” he says. “You learn basic life lessons from early children’s television, like Sesame Street and cartoons… How much has happened on television that has changed the way we view the world? “All you have to do is go to a concert and look around and see all these people who showed up to the concert, not because they had to, but because the music being performed on stage is so moving,” he continues. “We learn about ourselves and others through art.”

That changed this year when artist Joyce Utting Schutter created “Sea Harp,� her stunning piece inspired by the sea and music. Unveiled in April at the Cape Cod Theatre Company in Harwich, the sculpture was auctioned off in June at out Prelude to Summer.

ridget has never been much of a performer. “She’s never been able to dance or sing or anything like that,” her mother Caroline says. “So to see her do that performance, it brought tears to my eyes.” That performance was a full-scale musical production of “Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr.” featuring Latham Center students held this past May at the Brewster Baptist Church. Funded in part through a grant from the AFCC, the show allowed young people like 17-yearold Bridget—she sang two solos and was one of the leads—to shine on stage. This is now the second straight year that Latham has put on a spring production for its students. The nonprofit is a year-round residential school that currently serves 47 children between the ages of 8 and 22 with complex social needs. Roughly 60 percent of its student population has PraderWilli syndrome, a genetic disorder which manifests itself through intellectual and developmental disabilities as well as hormonal symptoms which lead to an insatiable hunger. Latham also serves children who have experienced significant trauma in addition to their intellectual and developmental challenges. “People with Prader-Willi syndrome are at risk of eating themselves to death,” Director of Development Heather Kelsey explains. “Imagine the hungriest you’ve ever felt; they never ever feel full… All of them require 24/7 monitoring.” The students face so many obstacles that getting them to act, sing, dance, and perform in front of others is seemingly impossible. But somehow, through the magic, power, and beauty of art, it happens. This spring, it elicited similar reactions from audience members that included parents like Caroline and Latham staff like Heather. “I find it

so unbelievably moving to see kids I know who really struggle with a lot of behavioral challenges kind of tilt their heads back and sing with all their heart,” says Heather. “Anybody who needs to know what the arts can do for human beings should see these children who are saddled with very difficult burdens, sing with a look of pure joy on their faces.” Talk to any of the students, from Chloe, 13, to Chris, 20, to Gabby, 20, and you’ll hear what the experience meant to them. “For me, it meant I got to perform with all my other friends and it made me feel happy,” Chloe says. What do most of us want from life? To feel a connection with others and to experience joy. At Latham, Instructor of Performing Arts & Wellness Sarah Jane Mason is responsible for providing these moments, overseeing two talent shows a year, a holiday concert, and a spring musical. Then there are the weekly arts classes and the performing arts club, Stars on Stage, where children get to play guitar, sing, drum, act, and perform. But they’re doing more than that. They’re building confidence, developing social skills, working on their fine motor skills, and improving their ability to communicate with others. This year’s spring musical was a showcase of just how much the arts matter at Latham. “Just to see them beaming and so proud of themselves makes my heart smile,” says Sarah Jane. “This show, it gave them confidence. Out in the real world, some of our students don’t have a lot of people who believe in them like we do at Latham… When they were standing there, doing it live, to hear the applause at the end and see what they accomplished, it meant the world.”

Fine Arts Work Center
very year, the Fine Arts Work Center welcomes 20 fellows from around the world to Provincetown. Over the course of seven months, these emerging written and visual artists not only have the opportunity to immerse themselves in their craft, but to use their talents to make an impact on the lives of others. Through the Community Arts Partners in Education (CAPE) program, fellows can design a creative writing or visual arts workshop for students at Provincetown schools or for senior citizens through the Provincetown Council on Aging. The AFCC has funded this initiative since its inception in 2006, understanding that you empower artists and strengthen communities when there’s a relationship between the two. Fellows are not required to participate in CAPE, but for those that do, it is often as beneficial to them as it is to the students and the seniors they are teaching. “The students will often inform the process or the vision of more senior artists,” says Richard MacMillan, co-executive director of the arts center. In recent years, workshops have touched upon everything from the etymology of words to creating garden signs after learning about food and gardening. At the senior center, Director Chris Hottle says the classes taught by fellows have been particularly meaningful. “It is one of the most exciting partnerships,” she says. “I’m always so inspired by their proposals. They are really kind of out-ofthe-box creative and put so much time into their proposals. It’s always something new and not something we’ve ever offered before.” Both years that poet Philip Matthews was selected as a writing fellow, he jumped at the chance to take part in CAPE. This past year, he worked with Jennifer Paine’s fifth grade students, using poetry, collages, and creative writing as tools for children to better understand themselves and their relationship with the world around them. Matthews says the experience was a way for him to give back and help shape the minds of the

next generation. “More and more I’ve been drawn to working with young people, especially in public schools,” he says. “I am very concerned about the disinvestment I see happening in public education. I went to public schools which had a really rich literature and music program that shaped who I am as an individual.” He says there is a tangible Philip M benefit to programs like atthews CAPE, especially for children. “I think it is important for young people to have exposure to working artists to understand it is a viable role of who you can be in society,” he says.

hat was once a one-day conference became a 9-episode podcast this year, a shift made to expand the reach, impact, and accessibility of the Creative Exchange. Launched in 2016, the Creative Exchange was a way for artists; patrons of the arts; leaders of cultural institutions, museums, and nonprofits; and business owners to connect with one another while empowering people who work in arts and culture so they can continue to grow. This spring, AFCC Executive Director Julie Wake was determined to breathe new life into the annual event and find an easier way for it to attract a larger audience. “We decided to do a new medium for the Creative Exchange because we wanted to cast a wider net to reach more people, specifically those who might not be able to attend the conference in person,” Wake explained. And so the podcast was born. Co-hosted by Wake and Amy Davies, executive director of Provincetown Community Television, the first season focused on the creative process. The podcast’s 11 guests covered an array of backgrounds, from live storyteller James Barnes to visual artist Joe Diggs to Chris McCarthy, executive director of the Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM). The season concluded at the end of May with a live panel discussion at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, allowing the public to hear from many of those who appeared on the show. “I’m fascinated by the creative process that everybody here has,” Barnes said during the event. “My process was so different…and

also this is not my livelihood so for you to be creative and have it be your livelihood, that’s the ultimate in storytelling.” Wake is hopeful that people will be able to find similar inspiration when they listen to episodes of the Creative Exchange at home, in their cars, on vacation, or elsewhere. “One of the things I enjoy from the conversations is the takeaways, the things I can implement in my own life and my own work,” she said. “I hope listeners can be inspired by some of the conversations to start connecting with other creative people and pursuing their passion projects.”

Keith Lockhart Reflects
ext year will be a momentous one for Keith Lockhart. The second-longest tenured conductor in Boston Pops Orchestra history will celebrate his 25th anniversary leading the famed music ensemble. “I don’t spend a lot of time looking back, but when I do think about it, it’s kind of amazing that when I took this job in 1995, it was kind of a long-term commitment, a career-setting kind of move,” he says. “You don’t become the conductor of the Boston Pops and think, ‘Gee, what am I going to do next?’ It’s a terminal position, but I couldn’t have imagined at the age of 35 being almost 60 and still doing this and still loving it.” It’s been a career that has witnessed him conduct nearly 2,000 concerts that admittedly all seem to “blend into one big concert.” That’s not to say there haven’t been moments where he has had to pinch himself as a reminder of how fortunate he has been. One of those happened to be his first 4th of July concert in Boston on the Esplanade. “It really struck me how big a deal this orchestra was and how many people cared about this, especially when I stepped on stage and there’s a sea of people in every direction as far as the eye can see,” he says. In his early days, he was able to work with legends in the business—Mel Torme, Rosemary Clooney, and Debbie Reynolds—who are no longer around. His list of celebrities, which range from Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler to cellist Yo-Yo Ma to jazz pianist and composer Dave Brubeck, number in the hundreds. Perhaps his greatest thrill happens every summer in North Carolina before Lockhart heads to Cape Cod to conduct the Pops by the Sea. Over the past 12 years, Lockhart has served as the artistic director for the Brevard Music Center Summer Institute and Festival, a summer training program for more than 500 students from high school to

post-graduate. His relationship with the institute dates back to the mid-1970s when he spent two summers there as a student. “It actually affected my life choices and my decision to get into music,” he says. Now he is paying it forward to those with similar aspirations. He acknowledges that not everyone who attends Brevard will pursue a career in music. And for him, that is perfectly fine. “What I do hope is that everybody leaves there very much in love with whatever they decide to do in life,” he says, noting that for some that may mean “being a great CEO or great doctor or lawyer or someone who plays in an amateur orchestra or is an enthusiastic audience member or is a board chair who rescues an arts nonprofit or a director of the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod. There are equally valuable ways to show your love for your profession.” And for those who choose to follow a path similar to his, he says, they must “desperately love being a musician and want to perform in front of people.” Nearly 25 years after he first stepped on stage at the Boston Pops, Lockhart still has that desire. “This is a fantastic place to be with a great orchestra and a great chance to make music for all sorts of people,” he says. “What else do I want out of life?”

Patterns are everywhere—in nature, in society, and in art. THESE PATTERNS REVEAL SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL about our world: we are all connected to one another, from the microscopic to the cosmic. It is that simple but powerful concept that has long served as a major theme in Joyce Utting Schutter’s work. “Often when creating a piece, I attempt to capture some of what I see as the visual music of the world around me, synthesizing a harmony of natural and human design,” she explains. That is the approach that Joyce took when creating “Sea Harp,” this year’s Citizens Bank Pops by the Sea commemorative artwork. It marks the first time in the 34-year history of the Pops that a sculpture has served as the creative representation of the Cape’s preeminent summer concert. Using all-natural materials, Joyce was able to design a magical work of art that is an amalgamation of a ship and a harp, perfectly blending ocean colors to evoke the region’s proximity to the water. “I was inspired by the sea and by music,” Joyce said at the unveiling of her piece in April. Born and raised in Guilford, Connecticut, she spent two decades in the Midwest where she balanced her work as an artist and an art professor while raising a family with her husband, James, who currently serves as a hospice chaplain in Southeastern Massachusetts. They have two daughters, Judith Bernhardt of Seattle, and Johanna Schutter of New York City. Joyce, who holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Iowa, says she has always had a passion for the arts. “I never really considered anything else,” she says, noting that her initial work was focused on drawing and sculpting people. It was when she was studying for her master’s degree that she began experimenting with an entirely different subject matter-nature--which has since served as the focus of her work. It fit in perfectly with a new method of sculpting she started developing around the same time, a labor-intensive process that incorporates either sprayed or hand-applied plant pulp. “I love looking at the cross sections of plants, even down to their cellular structure,” she says of her interest in the natural world. “In my studio, you’ll see books that have many electron microscope photos of different plant parts, just fantastic stuff. That is where the inspiration comes from.” Along with plants, Joyce’s work draws heavily from the intricacies of bones, seeds, feathers, roots, thorns, and similar items found in nature. The connection goes even deeper. All of her art is made from all-natural materials. “If you put one of my sculptures in the Earth, it is just going to break down again,” she says.

Having moved to Sandwich with her husband in 2006, she now plies her craft in a studio she built behind her home. It is there that she combines her talents with her passion with repeated practice, following the advice she used to give to students when she was a teacher. “I always recommended people find what they love no matter what it is,” she says. “One of the things I found difficult is the idea it is all supposed to be fun, because it is a lot of work. It’s the love that gives you the wherewithal to follow through.”

2019 Fellows In 2015, the AFCC established its Fellowship Program, a concerted effort to support a range of artists— photographers, singer/songwriters, painters, sculptors, writers, and more—in the pursuit of their passion. “Since we started this program, our goal has been to identify individuals in our region who are creating meaningful art and to empower them to continue honing their craft,” says AFCC Executive Director Julie Wake. “Investing in artists is one of the ways we can help them achieve their personal and professional goals.” Over the past five years, the program has fulfilled its promise by recognizing the work of 12 artists, from all corners of the Cape, including this year’s Fellows, Melanie Braverman and Cherie Mittenthal; each has been awarded $1,500, affirmation that their art matters and should be celebrated. MELANIE BRAVERMAN (WRITTEN WORD) “It really does feel like somebody is opening a door and beckoning me back in,” Melanie says of her AFCC fellowship. “It feels like an invitation.” For Melanie, it’s an invitation to return to her passion for creative writing and to finish a project she started nine years ago, shortly after she and her older brother Robert stopped talking. “We had a falling out,” she writes in her artist statement. “This happened a lot between us: exasperation leading to silence leading to unspoken reconciliation.” Melanie channeled her pent-up emotions into the beginnings of her third novel. The main character, loosely based on her brother, falls into a coma; several of his close friends and family sit by his side at the hospital, unraveling the story Melanie began to tell. Fast forward to July 2011 and Melanie was writing a difficult scene in which the mother of the main character is sitting next to her comatose son, unsure of whether he is going to live. That is when the phone rang. “The work was emotional, and I was having a hard time sitting still so without thinking, I picked up,” Melanie writes. On the other line was her brother, calling to tell her that he had been diagnosed with cancer. Melanie flew out to Iowa to be with Robert, who would die a month later. He was 54. After Robert’s death, Melanie shelved her writing to concentrate on the Alzheimer’s Family Support Center of Cape Cod, the nonprofit that she and her partner, Dr. Molly Perdue, co-founded in 2009. When not working, the couple is busy raising their two children, Sam, 15, and Jonah, 14. Now, Melanie is ready to finish her novel and dive back into a world that allows her to elicit a variety of emotions through the written word. The author of a book of poetry, “Red,” which won the 2002 Perugia Press Prize, as well as the coming-of-age novel

“East Justice,” couldn’t be more excited. “I have always identified as a writer,” she says. “I have been running this nonprofit for several years. Prior to that, I had two kids, and during that time I helped take care of my partner’s mom, who had Alzheimer’s. It’s been a long haul taking care of a lot of people, which I’m still doing and I love, but it hasn’t allowed much time to get to my own work. This [fellowship] is a real nod to get back to that world.”

CHERIE MITTENTHAL (VISUAL ARTS)
These are exciting times for Cherie, who recently opened a studio in Provincetown. Before that, she had been plying her craft in a small loft on the second floor of her house. “It was very limiting in size,” she says, making it challenging for her style of art, which requires proper ventilation. As an encaustic painter, Cherie represents a first for an AFCC Fellow. Encaustic, which means to burn in, utilizes heated beeswax along with colored pigments. She has been working in encaustics for the past 14 years; Cherie is so passionate about the technique that she is the director of the International Encaustic Conference held annually at the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill. The Truro location is a second home for Cherie, who has served as the executive artistic director for the Outer Cape nonprofit since 2002. “I’m very lucky to have a great job and be around creative people all the time,” she says. Over the past eight years, Cherie has added to her duties at Castle Hill, teaching a class in encaustic painting. While the method has defined her recent work, Cherie has long identified as an artist. “All through junior high school and
high school, I constantly carried a sketchbook,” she says. “I knew in high school I wanted to be an artist and study art in college.” She did just that at the University of Hartford, where she received her BFA in printmaking. She later earned her MFA in printmaking/bookmaking from Purchase College. Since then, she has always carved out time to foster her own creativity. “Even when I had no studio, I needed to be making work in some way or another, whether it was drawing in a sketchbook or writing in it or painting in watercolors or painting in oil on my back deck,” she says. “I always try to have my creative side be constantly present. Even when I’m not doing it, I know I should be doing it, I want to be doing it, and try to make time to do it.” That drive has translated into her work being exhibited in a variety of galleries and museums throughout the Northeast, including the Kobalt Gallery in Provincetown, the Cape Cod Museum of Art in Dennis, and the Provincetown Art Association and Museum. She is currently working on a new series focused on climate change. “I have really been noticing the change in the landscape,” she says. “It is something that has shifted visually… I do notice the tide coming up a little higher. It just feels different. I’m conscious of it, and it’s showing up in my work these days.” Cherie expressed gratitude for her AFCC Fellowship, which will help fund her latest creative endeavor. “It’s great to be recognized for something you love to do,” she says.

n 1961, President John F. Kennedy announced an ambitious goal to send an American to the moon by the end of the decade. A year later, he would reiterate that goal at a speech at Rice University: Many years ago, the great British explorer George Mallory, who was to die on Mount Everest, was asked why did he want to climb it. He said, “Because it is there.” Well, space is there, and we’re going to climb it, and the moon and the planets are there, and new hopes for knowledge and peace are there. Fifty years after Americans first set foot on the moon, the man credited for getting us there continues to inspire. On Cape Cod, the next generation is learning just how important his words, ideas, and actions were through a program aimed at understanding President Kennedy’s legacy through art. Organized by the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum, the program completed its third year and was funded in part through a grant from the AFCC. Nearly 115 students from four schools— Barnstable High School, Monomoy Regional High School, Monomoy Regional Middle School, and Sandwich High School—participated. They started with a field trip to the museum, where they toured

the exhibits and learned about President Kennedy’s far-reaching influence on everything from the creation of the Cape Cod National Seashore to the space race to the Peace Corps. From there, each school created its own art project, culminating in a public exhibit of student work. At Monomoy Regional High School, instructor David Alexander had his students choose an artifact or photograph that inspired them during their visit to the JFK Museum. They then conducted research on that item and used art to explain the significance of that piece. Jeremiah Nickerson, an art teacher at Monomoy Regional Middle School, had his students create artwork focused on the theme “Community Heroes.” One student chose to highlight the Special Olympics, which was founded by President Kennedy’s sister, Eunice Kennedy Shriver. Another made an homage to a sibling who lost his fight with cancer. And a third created a sculpture in honor of his uncle who served in Vietnam. “This program gave the students a wonderful opportunity to self-reflect and learn where they are from and the people whose names are found on buildings and roads all around them,” Nickerson says. Emily Mezzetti, director of education programs for the JFK Hyannis Museum, says the program has allowed students to tap into their creativity as an expression of knowledge. “Students have used so many different mediums. I’ve seen watercolors, chalk, pottery, 3-D art; the creativity shows their depth of understanding and allows them to express themselves in totally different ways,” she says. Nearly 56 years after his death, President Kennedy is inspiring today’s students, as he did in the 1960s, to soar to new heights and to explore new frontiers. Only this time, he’s not doing it through words. He’s doing it through art.

f you’ve driven by the Cahoon Museum of American Art on Route 28 this summer, it’s nearly impossible to not notice the blue trees. And that’s the point. Since the end of May, the trees have caused motorists to slow down. Many have pulled over and gotten out of their cars to catch a closer glimpse of the striking color. If the Lorax speaks for the trees in Dr. Seuss’ universe, then Brooklyn-based artist Konstantin Dimopoulos speaks for them in ours. Since 2005, he has been working to bring his public art displays to communities throughout the world. Starting in Melbourne, Australia, the colorful art installation has been to 24 other destinations, including Singapore; Chattanooga, Tennessee; Galveston, Texas; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Palo Alto, California. This year, Konstantin and his cultural call-to-action made its 25th stop in Cotuit. “In many respects, the blue trees are making a sound in an urban environment and changing them to a surreal environment for a brief period of time,” he says. “They are raising awareness to what is happening thousands of miles away that cannot be seen.” The anthropomorphized sound Konstantin’s blue trees are making is high-pitched screams of horror in reaction to global deforestation. In our busy, day-to-day lives, it is easy to overlook the importance of trees. But the blue reminds us to pay attention. “People are affected by what they see,” Konstantin says. “I use color because I realized the one color trees don’t come in is blue. There are red trees, yellow trees, and green trees. I know blue trees stand out and get people to take notice.”

Through a grant from the AFCC, the Cahoon Museum was able to bring Konstantin and his blue trees to Cotuit. With the help of roughly 60 volunteers, the museum painted nearly 75 trees, including a Norway maple, Japanese maple, dogwood, river birch, and several saplings, using water soluble, environmentally friendly blue pigment. During the actual installation, Douglas Jones, administrative director of the Children’s School of Science in Woods Hole, worked alongside Konstantin. He was struck by his enthusiasm, not only for his art, but for the message it conveys. “Art has that mission, not that it can influence change, but that it should,” Douglas says. “I believe that art is intended to promote a message and provoke a response and that it can lead to action or at least discussion.” At the Cahoon Museum, it is doing just that. Inside, a room has been set up where visitors have been able to write down their thoughts about the importance of trees on green-colored paper shaped like leaves. This is just one of the ways that Museum Director Sarah Johnson says the project is stimulating thought and conversation. “One of the strengths of this particular installation is the artist worked with a team of volunteers which gave people a lot of access,” she says. “Sometimes people think museums aren’t for them, but by putting the art out front and having the community help create the artwork, it was really accessible.”

The Kennedy Forum is Proud to Support Pops by the Sea It’s amazing what we can accomplish when everyone plays from the same sheet of music. Founded in 2013 by former Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy (D-R.I.), The Kennedy Forum seeks to advance evidence-based practices, policies, and programming for the treatment of mental illness and addiction. We do this by uniting mental health advocates, business leaders, and government agencies around a common set of principles, including full implementation of the Federal Parity Law, which requires insurers to cover treatment for mental health and substance use disorders no more restrictively than treatment for illnesses of the body, such as diabetes or cancer.
