We are so grateful that you have chosen to join us for the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod’s (AFCC) first-ever all-virtual art auctions. At a time when our region’s art scene has been devastated by the pandemic, your support is needed now more than ever.

Both the Silent Online Auction and the Live Virtual Auction, streaming from the Chatham Bars Inn, will raise critical funds to support the Cape’s creative economy on the road to recovery.

To get the most out of these events, we encourage you to register as soon as possible.

These auctions are a great opportunity not only to take home one-of-a-kind pieces that reflect the creative talent that abounds in our region, but also to give back to artists who have lost income and to museums, theaters, and art venues that have had to temporarily shut their doors and lay off or furlough employees out of necessity.

As we look ahead, we want to make sure that the arts don’t just survive for some, but that they thrive for all of us.

Auction Details The AFCC Live Virtual Art Auction will feature the stunning 2020 Pops by the Sea commemorative artwork, “A Symphony,” by Provincetown painter Cynthia Packard. We’ll also be auctioning off new pieces by several past Pops by the Sea artists. This special event will be hosted by Melyora de Koning of Phillips auction house, in real time, at the beautiful Chatham Bars Inn. It is important to register early to bid! Our auctions take place through Bidsquare, an online auction platform. As a registered Bidsquare bidder, you can participate remotely and be a part of the action via the internet. You can also submit an absentee bid ahead of time, or make arrangements to be a phone bidder.

The AFCC Silent Online Art Auction starts on Thursday, July 23, at noon ET, and ends on Sunday, August 9 (the same day as Pops by the Sea At-Home Edition!), when one artwork will close every minute beginning at 9:30 p.m. ET. We’ll have more than 30 pieces by some of the Cape’s premiere artists. What if I win?

Winning bidders will be notified by email and receive an invoice that will require your payment for the item(s). Your item(s) will be either delivered by the AFCC if you are on Cape Cod or shipped directly to you.

Please see below about delivery information. The winning bidder will also be charged a Buyer’s Premium of 12 percent (information noted below).

Your Artwork Purchase PAYMENT All artwork purchases must be paid for with a credit card, unless other arrangements have been made with the AFCC. At the close of the Auction, buyers will be emailed an invoice containing a link for payment.

Please note that shipping or delivery arrangements will not be made until artwork invoices have been paid in full.

BUYER’S PREMIUM A buyer’s premium equal to 12 percent of the winning bid will be applied to each lot sold and will be paid by the buyer in addition to the winning bid purchase price. This premium helps to offset the administrative costs of running the AFCC auction and ensures the funds raised through artwork sales go directly to supporting the mission of the AFCC. A buyer’s premium will not be applied to any pledge(s) made during the Live Auction’s Raise Your Paddle fundraising initiative. Gifts made through Raise Your Paddle are outright donations and are fully taxdeductible as allowed by law.

ARTWORK DELIVERY AND SHIPPING The AFCC offers complimentary delivery to buyers on Cape Cod. If delivery is required off-Cape, the artwork can be shipped at the buyer’s expense.

Delivery of artwork will take place between August 10 and August 21, 2020, unless other arrangements are made with the buyer.

I've long been inspired by the landscape of my beloved Cape Cod. I'm drawn to its magical light, expansive skies, and ever-changing seas. The bright colors and floral patterns of the seventies and eighties have influenced my work, as well. She shares her passion for the arts as a mentor for numerous interns of the Cape Cod Museum of Art and also by teaching at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod in South Yarmouth.

I am constantly creating images in my mind. Walking the beaches or seeing something on the side of the road can be a source of inspiration. To capture the immediacy of the moment calls for a spontaneous approach that relies on gesturaI work and lets the process and materials guide me toward each finished piece. Kenneth Hawkey is an artist known for his paintings that represent a strong sense of place. Born and raised in New England, Whitney has spent her life exploring and painting its diverse landscape, most especially its coastline. She received her BS in Fine Arts from Skidmore College. “Living near New England’s wonderfully diverse coast, I strive to create paintings that reflect those stunning colors that pop up quickly, as well as the emotions that they inspire. In my studio, I am able to paint large and expressively with oils while experimenting with the emotional impact of light, color, and application of paint.”

I begin each sculpture by welding a thin skeleton of carbon steel. I overlay this with a hand-stitched fiber substrate.

Many layers of sprayed or hand-applied paper pulp, often interspersed with organic materials, imbue each piece with a life of its own. The fascinating chemistry of paper forges the elements together without the use of foreign chemicals or glue.

When I want to use color on one of my pieces, I apply pure powdered pigments with a dry brush, or use watercolor or encaustic. My studio is in Sandwich. Cape Cello is one of three pieces created for the 2019 Pops by the Sea concert. *Also in the LIVE auction. *Cape Cello is a wall hanging.

I am inspired by objects in which aesthetic is more a byproduct of functionality than it is the primary attribute. Vintage European sports cars, World War II aircraft, and the American muscle car culture of the 1950s and 1960s are some of the industrial achievements from which I draw ideas. I gain a gratifying sense of power by manipulating metal through welding, plasma cutting, and hammering. I’m fascinated by marine life—particularly sharks, deep-sea anglerfish, and squid. I enjoy creating works that pay tribute to the beauty of nature and the triumphs of another time.

Traci Harmon-Hay received her BFA in illustration and painting from the Maryland Institute of Art and studied with Fritz Briggs of the Schuler School of Fine Arts in Baltimore. She is a member and teacher at PAAM. She paints with fluid acrylics on raw canvas, building layers of wash into a final combination of opaque and transparent color. In this series, she reflects on her ongoing life as a hobbyist beekeeper by commenting on humans’ relationship to beauty. Her representation of the struggles of man versus nature, with the perfect symmetry of the background patterns as the setting for the industrious and vulnerable bee, underscores her hope that both beauty and survival will prevail.

JACKIE REEVES Deck Chair (Acrylic on mylar. 36" x 24", framed behind glass) 2017 Pops by the Sea Commemorative Artist Canadian-born, Cape Cod–based artist Jackie Reeves uses mixed media to bring together figurative and abstract elements in her art. She was raised in Montreal by architect parents and studied design art at Concordia University.

In 2010 she earned her MFA in painting at Massachusetts College of Art and Design and has since exhibited in solo and group shows throughout Cape Cod and in Pennsylvania, Vermont, Washington DC, and North Carolina. Pamela Pindell’s initial education was at Syracuse University and the Tyler School of Art in Rome, Italy. A Massachusetts artist, she has been exhibited widely in open juried shows, including annuals at the Salmagundi Club in New York, the Catherine Lorrillard Wolfe Art Club, and the Audubon Society. Among many accolades, Pindell has won four within the last five years from the Guild of Boston Artists, including the prestigious Edmund Tarbell award. Now that she lives in Osterville on Cape Cod, her subjects are children playing by the sea, Cape Cod gardens, and landscapes depicting the beauty of the Cape. There is a contrast between the systematized squares and the looseness of the painting, between abstraction and realism. Most of them involve an underlying grid in which I use source photos and transfer them to the painting. Sometimes each square is painted separately; sometimes the entire painting is done in one shot. The images are chosen intuitively, mostly for their visual qualities, not for symbolic or narrative value.

The subtle contradictions that exist within a painting are what interest me most and sustain me in my practice. Although rooted in an abstract tradition, my work makes clear references to the natural world. I spend as much time as I am able near the water: listening, watching the light, collecting. It is my intention that the images depicted, while not recognizable per se, be believable and exist logically within the environment of the painting. I emphasize the pure physicality of my materials while also exploring their alchemistic possibilities.

In addition to being represented by Four Eleven Gallery in Provincetown, he’s recently shown at the Chazan Gallery in Providence, RI; the Dorado Project in Jersey City, NJ; the Plough Gallery in Tifton, GA; and at VeeVee in Boston, MA. In 2019 he was artistin-residence with Twenty Summers.

He’s faculty in Goddard College’s MFA program in Interdisciplinary Arts and teaches at Rhode Island School of Design. He’s a founding board member of Provincetown Commons.

CLEBER STECEI Old Cranberry Bog (Oil on Canvas, 10" x 8")

2016 Pops by the Sea Commemorative Artist Born in Brazil in 1976, Cleber Stecei began experimenting with abstract painting as a teenager. After arriving in the United States at the age of 19, he became inspired by the beautiful New England scenery and has since excelled in landscape painting.

Cleber has a great appreciation for realistic portrayals of the human form, as well as the spontaneous brush work of a plein air painting, and he carefully tries to combine those qualities in his work.

Stecei’s work is done both from photographic references and on location (en plein air), allowing him to respond to the effects of natural light and atmosphere.

Stecei is a member of the Cape Cod Art Association, and his work has been awarded numerous times, including a Best in Show. Since showing at the Addison Art Gallery, his work has enthralled collectors as well as judges and has been featured in respected regional and national art publications.

DIANNA BRAGINTON-SMITH AND HEATHER BRAGINTON-SMITH POPS by the SEA (11" x 17", oil on wood panel) This painting began as a piece by Heather Braginton-Smith, the 1989 Pops by the Sea commemorative artist. Heather died tragically in an automobile accident on Route 6 in March of 1997 at the age of 37. Her sister, artist Dianna Braginton-Smith, took the unfinished oil painting made by Heather years ago and completed it - incorporating elements of her sister's commemorative artwork for the 1989 Pops into this piece. “I hope whoever

gets this can feel the love and the gratitude I had for being able to paint with my sister again,” Dianna said. “Heather loved creating art more than anything. To have her be a part of this with other past Pops artists and give her a place on that roster is an honor. I don’t have words for it.”

DONALD BEAL At the Ponds (Oil paint on panel, 18" x 19.5")

2009 Pops by the Sea Commemorative Artist Donald Beal was born in 1959 in Syracuse, New York, and grew up in Westford. He studied painting at the Swain School of Design in New Bedford, Massachusetts, and received an MFA from Parsons School of Design in 1983. He moved to Provincetown, Massachusetts in 1985 where he has lived and worked ever since. Beal has taught drawing and painting Cape-wide for nearly thirty years, and was a Professor of Fine Arts at the University of Massachusetts in North Dartmouth from 1999 through 2019.

He is one of two recipients of the 2013 Lillian Orlowsky William Freed Fellowship Grant (LOWF), and received a Gottlieb Emergency Grant and an American Academy of Arts and Letters grant in 2018.

JACKIE REEVES Ripples from Pebbles (Oil on Panel, 48" x 36")

2017 Pops by the Sea Commemorative Artist Canadian-born, Cape Cod–based artist Jackie Reeves uses mixed media to bring together figurative and abstract elements in her art. She was raised in Montreal by architect parents and studied design art at Concordia University. Her artistic career began as a professional mural painter for corporate, private, and public spaces. Concurrently, Reeves cofounded the Plymouth Community Art Center. In 2010 she earned her MFA in painting at Massachusetts College of Art and Design and has since exhibited in solo and group shows throughout Cape Cod and in Pennsylvania, Vermont, Washington DC, and North Carolina. She has been profiled in numerous publications including the Boston Globe, Art New England, and Artscope Magazine. She is the 2016 recipient of the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod's Fellowship award for Visual Arts and was selected by the organization to paint the 32nd annual Boston Pops by the Sea commemorative painting in 2017. Jackie teaches mixed media drawing and painting at Cotuit Center for the Arts. A resident of the United States since 1995, Reeves currently lives in Sandwich, Massachusetts.

SERGIO ROFFO Moored in Madaket (10" x 18", oil on panel) 2007 Pops by the Sea Commemorative Artist Sergio Roffo received his artistic education at the Vesper George School of Art, where his teachers included leading Boston School artist Robert Douglas Hunter. Roffo has been inspired by the work of American traditional painters such as Inness, Fitz Henry Lane, and Albert Bierstadt, among others. Roffo’s representations of coastal landscapes reveal a

luminous, masterful feeling. As you view his art, you will discover a precise sense of value and atmospheric perspective that conveys a relaxed sense of calmness, a characteristic that defines and informs all of his works.

CYNTHIA PACKARD A Symphony

(Oil on wood, 32" x 42") Cynthia Packard uses her art as an expression of who she is. Packard grew up in Princeton, New Jersey, and comes from a long lineage of artists. Her great-grandfather was the noted impressionist Max Bohm, who played a significant role in establishing Provincetown's art colony. Her mother, Anne Packard, is renowned for her sea and landscape paintings.

Cynthia graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art in 1981 with a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture and moved to Provincetown to pursue a career as an artist. Now, she shares her knowledge of her craft with emerging artists, teaching at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill, and the Scottsdale Artists' School in Arizona, as well as leading in-studio workshops.

2013 Pops by the Sea Commemorative Artist Paul studied art and oil painting at Boston University School of Fine Arts, graduating in 1979.

In the 1980s and ‘90s, Paul created artwork for publication. His work won many awards and has been published worldwide. Former clients include: Digital, Cigna, Fidelity, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Sunoco, and TIME Magazine. 2019 Pops by the Sea Commemorative Artist I begin each sculpture by welding a thin skeleton of carbon steel. I overlay this with a hand-stitched fiber substrate. Many layers of sprayed or hand applied paper pulp, often interspersed with organic materials, imbue each piece with a life of its own. The fascinating chemistry of paper forges the elements together without the use of foreign chemicals or glue. When I want to use color on one of my pieces, I apply pure powdered pigments with a dry brush, or use watercolor or encaustic.

NOTE: the darker, "Autumn" horse also can be placed horizontally, as if running.

I am a native New Englander, born in Boston and raised in Guilford, Connecticut. I spent two decades in the Midwest, working as an artist, teaching, and raising a family. I studied papermaking under Timothy Barrett (2009 MacArthur Fellow) at the University of Iowa, where I earned an MFA in Sculpture (’97). I taught drawing, sculpture, painting, ceramics, and graphic design at Iowa Central Community College. My sculpture experience ranges from cast iron, bronze, and clay to welded steel, fiber, and paper. My unique method of sculpting with sprayed paper pulp is described in Volume 13, No. 2 of Hand Papermaking and in The Papermaker’s Companion by Helen Heibert. My work has been exhibited nationally. My studio is in Sandwich, Massachusetts.

SAM VOKEY Sailing Through

2003 Pops by the Sea Commemorative Artist Sam Vokey is an oil painter who specializes in landscapes and still lifes and commissioned custom paintings. Sam has been painting for more than 25 years. He is an elected member of the Guild of Boston Artists and has won the designation of Copley Master from the Copley Society of Boston.

He is a graduate of Bowdoin College in Maine and Middlesex School in Concord.

His painting style is most closely associated with the Boston School tradition of painting, which crosses Realism with some of the softer edges and painterly qualities of Impressionism. Vokey’s landscapes and still lifes demonstrate a strong consideration for creating balance between the overall composition and the light and dark values in his paintings. In 2006, one of Vokey's still life paintings was acquired by the Cape Cod Museum of Art for the permanent collection. Vokey's paintings can also be found in private collections nationally and internationally, including the private collections of a United States Senator, the former President of Ireland, and the former President of Uruguay.

JON FRIEDMAN Hopper House Sunset (Oil on gessobord, 18" x 24")

2008 Pops by the Sea Commemorative Artist Jon Friedman grew up in Arlington, Virginia. He received a BA in philosophy from Princeton University and an MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He also studied at the Corcoran Museum School in Washington, DC, and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine.

His portraits, landscape paintings, and sculptures have been shown in exhibitions throughout the United States. His portrait work is represented in numerous public and institutional collections here and abroad, including the National Portrait Gallery, the U.S. House of Representatives, the Federal Reserve Board, the Carnegie Institute of Washington, the Royal College of Surgeons, the Royal Society in Great Britain, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, among others.

In 2008 the National Portrait Gallery commissioned Friedman to paint a double portrait of Bill and Melinda Gates. In 2014 the museum added his portrait of Ted Turner to its collection and in 2017 it commissioned him to paint a portrait of Indra Nooyi. In 2013 Michael Bloomberg commissioned Friedman to paint his portrait for the New York City Portrait Collection in City Hall.
