As a self-proclaimed shopaholic, Orleans has always been my favorite town on the Lower Cape to shop locally. When cruising around the rotary and into town, you will quickly notice the abundance of shopping Orleans offers. It’s easy to see why locals call it the “Hub of the Lower Cape.”
Your first stop off the rotary is Tradewinds Gifts, one of the Cape’s most prominent family-owned and operated gift and beach shops. They boast two levels filled with all the beach gear you need, from beach chairs and sand toys to the hippest beach floats.
Around the corner, you will find Nauset Surf, the oldest surf shop on Cape Cod, established in 1965. While there, you can find everything surf, sun, and beach related.
You don’t have to venture far to find your next go-to spot, Canterbury Leather. Established
in 1970, Canterbury Leather is open year-round with the finest brands of shoes, sandals, customer leather goods, and unique silver jewelry.
Across the street is Goose Hummock, the town’s number one outdoor adventure retailer. Whether you’re looking to go fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding, boating, camping, or bird watching, they have you covered! Their experienced team will hook you up with whatever gear you need for the day’s adventure.

Heading to Main Street, you can hit several of Main Street’s best spots on foot, starting with Oceana Oceana features many local artists, photographers, and high-end jewelers. If you want a wedding gift or a piece of classy coastal décor for your home, stop in.
Neighboring Oceana is Coastal Craft Galleries, a cooperative of local Cape Artisans, many of whom work in the shop daily. You can find a variety of jewelry techniques, acrylic pour paintings, stained glass, and much more!

Orleans Camera, located in Skaket Corners, offers various services, including photo prints and creations. They will help you get your favorite image onto a canvas, service your camera, and even take that passport photo.
Another Orleans favorite: Agway of Cape Cod. Agway of Cape Cod may have started as an iconic landmark in Northboro, Massachusetts, in the 1960s, but this family-run business is an Orleans staple. The beauty of their greenhouse and the extent of their garden center is indescribable – it has everything you could need. And, of course, remember your furry friends! In Rockport, Mass. there is a replica of a fishing shack considered to be the most often painted and photographed building in North America.
No way, says Michelle Lamy,
standing in front of Cap’n Cass’s in Orleans. The historic diner, festooned with colorful buoys, looks out at the bayside small port complete with “clam trees” that is Rock Harbor.
“I really think Cap’n Cass is Motif
#1,” she said, using the moniker for the red shack up the coast. “It’s an iconic establishment.”
Lamy recently purchased Cap’n Cass, which had closed during COVID.
“The place needed preservation. I’m into preservation,” said the master painter. She hopes to open by fall.
The Cap’n Cass building, which also overlooks a salt marsh, is close to a century old and was bought by a lobsterman – George Morton, a.k.a. Capt’n Cass – in the 1960s. He would pull his lobster traps in the morning and sell the lobster, as well as other seafood, at his restaurant.
People flocked for the food but
also to see commercial boats and the view.
“Water is who we are, it is why we come here,” said Orleans Selectman Michael Herman, not just the ocean but marshes and freshwater ponds as well.
Town residents and visitors realize that and over the years have taken steps to protect the Blue Economy, adding a water protection component
to the hotel tax, and instituting a fertilizer ban.
Katy Acheson, economic director at the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce, said the blue economy link to tourism and visitors is moored in the 1800s. Sea captains built opulent homes with income secured from the bounty of the sea. When those days ended many mansions became bed and breakfasts.
“Their homes were transformed into places of hospitality,” she said.
Those captain homes are testament to days of yore, and the peninsula’s continuing economic connection to the sea. Acheson thinks about that interconnection as she celebrates various aspects of the Blue Economy.
The success of the Blue Economy requires attention and investment: There are plans to upgrade the infrastructure at Rock Harbor to better serve the commercial fishing fleet and Orleans is embarking on an economic study to ascertain the economic impact of Rock Harbor and Nauset Harbor.
The town’s commercial fishing industry’s catch is valued at more than $2.5 million a year paid directly to the boats. Indirect benefits – how many people buy lobsters or clams, go fishing on charter boat and watch the sunset at Rock Harbor – can be harder to gauge.
In the middle of town, the Orleans Farmers Market, rife with local produce, native honey, and seafood, is held every Saturday in an open space across from the former Cap’n Elmer’s, a longtime restaurant and fish market. Denice Lapierre holds court at one booth, Isabel and Lilee, which features scallops and swag from the namesake vessel, and other local seafood.
“We highlight how important it is to buy small and know your fisherman,” said Lapierre, who is married to Captain Chris Merl. “People call and email and say, ‘We miss you so much here in Colorado’ or wherever they are, or ‘I’m in
Arizona please send me scallops’,” Lapierre said.
If Merl is out in dangerous weather, customers find out on social media, worry and check in. They also begin to understand there are different fish depending on the season.
“Everybody loves connecting to where the catch came from,” said Lapierre.
Just like people call Lapierre and have them send the local fish back to their hometowns, they also often want to hang the beauty of a favorite spot in their homes.
Painter and photographer Steven Kennedy has spent 40 years capturing the Cape’s working waterfronts on canvas and photo paper.
He considers himself part of a long line of people who rely on the ocean.
“Cape Cod’s Blue Economy is centuries old,” he said, “from native peoples gathering shellfish to huge sailing schooners traveling hundreds of miles and fishing for months at a time… In modern times smaller inshore boats leave the dock in the wee hours and
return with a fresh catch later that same day.”
Kennedy said he became aware of the fishing fleet soon after arriving on Cape in 1981. After painting a few boat pictures and photographing vessels he was hooked.
In other places he often has to
pay attention to his backgrounds to make sure he doesn’t capture modern development. With expanses of the Cape protected, including the Cape Cod National Seashore, photographs and paintings can seem almost timeless.
Orleans’ connection to the water is much the same, enduring, touching every aspect of life. Selectman Herman pays homage to it with his business, a farm. He named it “Greenhouse by the Sea.”

Growing up on Cape Cod, I spent much of my free time outdoors, playing on the tidal flats, swimming in the kettle ponds, and exploring the pine and oak woods surrounding our home. Being outside was where I was most happy. I could wander, use my imagination and make discoveries. A salamander under a log! A vibrant blue fragment of a robin’s egg! A family of bobwhites hopping down my sandy driveway! As a parent, I continued the tradition with my children, allowing nature to be their playground and teacher and hoping the small wonders of nature would excite and inspire them, too.
When schools and scheduled activities stopped abruptly in the spring of 2020, we began to make it a point to explore a new place outside nearly every day. We started by exploring our hometown of Brewster but quickly decided to meander further and walk trails and romp on beaches in all fifteen Cape Cod towns. My love of nature was renewed while watching my boys delight in catching tadpoles, climbing the limbs of wolf trees in the woods, and splashing in the salty waves of the ocean.
Hoping to share the wealth of information about the trails and landmarks with other families, I began documenting our adventures and sharing them online with my social media account, “Get Outside Cape Cod.”
I encouraged other families to learn more about and explore this wild and precious place where we live. Eventually, I even published a hiking guide entitled “50 Cape Cod Hiking Trails,” featuring many (but not all!) of the trails we had trekked.
Orleans boasts hundreds of acres of conservation land and fifteen well-maintained walking trails. The protected land varies from salt marshes to cedar swamps, woodlands, uplands, and wetlands. My children and I have explored many of these trails over the years. Thanks to the Orleans Conservation Trust and its dedication to protecting and restoring land in this beloved town, we continue to find new properties. Here are a few of our favorite sites to explore in Orleans; we hope you appreciate them as much as we do.
One of our favorite trails is on Little Pleasant Bay, adjacent to Pah Wah Pond. Orleans Conservation Trust purchased this property to stop the proposed building of a subdivision in the late 1980s. Thankfully, this nine-acre parcel is now protected. Pah Wah is named after the Native American term for “Medicine Man.” The story of Pompmo, a medicine man who lived in this area in the early 17th century, continues to be shared today. Legend has it that if fishermen offer tobacco to Pompmo, they will be rewarded with a plentiful catch. The loop-style trail begins in the woods but leads to a stunning bay view. If you head down the steps to walk along the shore, pick up a shell or rock to add to the “nature table” set along the trail. Other hikers have collected an array of nature’s curiosities, and you never know what you’ll find!
Henson’s Cove, 33 White’s Lane
If you want to stretch your legs and take a long walk, consider the Cape Cod Rail Trail. This 27-mile-long paved path starts in Yarmouth and continues through to Wellfleet. Part of this trail rolls right through the heart of Orleans, connecting Brewser’s Nickerson State Park to Eastham. Walking along the rail trail gives you access to views of marshes, ponds, and woodlands otherwise hidden from sight! Keep an eye out for osprey (or house-sitting bald eagles) on their nests along Cedar Pond, check for great blue herons fishing in the marsh, or even a red fox hunting along the edge of the woods. The smooth asphalt trail provides accessibility for wheelchairs, strollers, bikers, and walkers. We like to bring scooters and skateboards, but anything without a motor is acceptable! You can access the rail trail at a few different locations in Orleans, but we choose to park near the Chocolate Sparrow and get a sweet treat after our adventure.
Not only is Henson’s Cove a beautiful walking trail with breathtaking views of the river and cove, but it is a protected habitat for a threatened species, the diamondback terrapin. These terrapins live exclusively in brackish water, so this location between Meeting House Pond and Little Pleasant Bay creates the perfect environment to thrive. Volunteers from Mass Audubon Wellfleet’s Wildlife Sanctuary monitor the area closely, protecting the nests in the late spring and early summer and releasing hatchlings at the end of the summer season. Walking the short trail, you may see a protected nest under a wire cage, witness an adult terrapin meandering through the grass, or even spot a tiny hatchling emerging from the sand. Informational plaques along the trail provide more information about these incredible animals.
A wide-open sandy beach might come to mind when you envision Cape Cod, and Skaket Beach on the bayside is a perfect example, not to mention a crowd-favorite spot for taking in the sunset. But, depending on the tide, this beach can look as different as day and night. Swimming in the calm salty waters or sunbathing on the shore may be the best way to enjoy the beach at high tide. But, at low tide, a new world emergeswhere children (and adults with child-like wonder!) can delight in finding small crabs, worms, crustaceans, and treasures. Intertidal pools form as the tide recedes and teem with sea life. My boys love to lift rocks looking for Asian shore crabs or sandworms, catch sand shrimp with nets, and collect hermit crabs as they scuttle through the shallow water. I recommend bringing a bucket and net and wearing waterproof shoes or boots. And remember – return all living creatures to where you found them!
Kent’s Point, End of Frost Fish Lane
If you were to ask my boys what their favorite walking trails are, they would undoubtedly include those with water access. Luckily, in Orleans, many paths abut ponds, marshes, and creeks. Kent’s Point perfectly exemplifies this combination of wooded trails and water views. This 1.5-mile-long trail sits on over 27 acres of conservation land. You can access Lonnie’s Pond, Little Pleasant Bay, and Frost Fish Creek by following short paths to the shore. A few benches have been installed along the trail, so you can sit and absorb the beauty and tranquility of your surroundings. One thing to note about this particular property is that it is a popular dog-walking location. We often take our rescue pup, Jetty, and always meet many friendly dogs on our walks. If you do bring your pup, remember to clean up after them and ask before approaching other walkers’ dogs.
The herring runs across Cape Cod fill to the brim every spring with herring, or alewives, heading inland to lay hundreds of thousands of eggs. Their shiny, silver bodies rush down the creeks and leap up the fish ladders, trying to avoid the beaks of herring gulls waiting for an easy dinner. The herring migration from the ocean waters to the inland ponds happens yearly and is a genuinely awe-inspiring sight. Pilgrim Lake in Orleans is the site of a very active herring run. The short path to the right of the parking lot will lead you to the run. The stream’s light sandy bottom and clear water allow an up-close view of the herring as they swim upstream. Walk along the side of the creek bed and notice the other harbingers of spring: fragrant skunk cabbage and unfurling cinnamon fern fiddleheads protruding from the ground. The muddy paths along the creek are also an ideal place to look for animal
tracks. Raccoon, coyote, fox, and even otter tracks can be found along the shore. These mammals benefit from the herring run, consuming the fish and leaving the bones and remains to decompose, seeding essential nutrients back into the ground.
I hope you and your family find time to visit some of these places, breathe the clear fresh air, and find wonder in the smallest of nature’s treasures.
Special thanks to the Orleans Conservation Trust for protecting and restoring so many properties here in town.
Opened in 1913, historic Eldredge Park is home base for the Orleans Firebirds, one of 10 members of the Cape Cod Baseball League.
Admission to games is free and there is no reserved seating. You can arrive early since the field is open at all times. The team suggests you bring a blanket, beach chair and a sweatshirt or jacket to games.
